Chapter 1: "Life in the Village"

The guards at the station did as they were told. Richter would meanwhile head to the guard station but for a different reason than Alister's. The guards did their salute even though he wasn't captain anymore but it was fine.

"At ease men. I'm not a captain anymore," he said with a smile.

"Sorry sir... er I mean... Richter. It feels weird to call you by your name," one of the guards admitted. Richter responded with a small laugh and asked if the men he sent out were back yet.

"Not yet sir. I reckon they'll be back soon. The captain told us to switch shifts once the shadow reaches the line," he says pointing to the line.

Richter sinply nods. "Alright that's fine."

Meanwhile... at the deepest parts of the forest.

The guards there would reach what seems to be a dead end of sorts upon some rock wall. Then one of the guards stepped forward and placed his hand on the wall. It woulf activate a hidden switch and revealed a hidden door.

"What's this?" One of the guards asked.

"It's understandable. You're new to the squad. Ember Falls is a coastal village without any recognition. You have a few travellers and at least one merchant and there. There's a reason for this."

"What?" The guard who asked was confused. "Ember Falls is just an isolated village isn't it?"

"The isolation exists for a reason. Come inside. I'll explain."

"Does the captain know about this?" The guard asks.

"No, not yet. Richter will explain soon."

[This part has no interaction available.]

Meanwhile on one of the roads leading to the forest. A group of 20 individuals approach the forest. 9 of them are archers while 11 of them are swordsman. One is the leader who is carrying a very large blade. His attire is covered with a red robe of sorts.

He and the rest of his crew enter the forest.

"We're almost there. Listen up everyone, there will be guards no doubt. Archers when you see a guard station hide and prepare to launch a surprise attack. Swordsman, enter the village through another way. Our mission starts now."

(Not interactable... yet. Basically no one knows these people are in the forest. Also to note since Ember Falls isn't that big of a village, there aren't that many guards as opposed to a town. Like about 15 or so.)

Ah! Right, well,” Cerys held up a hand as a gesture of kindness, returning the man's smile with a small one of her own. “See you around, I suppose. Enjoy the rest of your day.” After the man left, she turned back around, placing her palms on her thighs. Cerys listened to the creaking of the dock underfoot as he walked away.

Work. A job. That was something Cerys should probably get. She hadn't had much luck at her last one, being fired after showing up late several days in a row. She had so much free time lately, perhaps she could use something to keep herself busy. Plus, she needed some money. Her landlord was starting to get suspicious after Cerys dodged her rent payment three times in a row. And, she remembered, seeing her clunky and uncomfortable footwear sitting next to her, she wanted some more comfortable shoes.

Then again, she really enjoyed peaceful times like these, simply hanging out and talking with whomever decides to stop by. She closed her eyes again as she moved her legs once again in the water, allowing the sound of the shores, gulls, and wind to take her someplace far from here

Assuming that the male had enough time to view the artwork, Rue shut the medical journal, fastening the leather around it. The object was cradled in her hands, that way she wouldn't bend the cover. It was somewhat of a rule between the wisewoman to keep all heirlooms in perfect condition for the next generation; speaking of which, the shaman was in dire need of an apprentice, but that was a quest she could take on in a later hour.

The knife she had requested was developed for amputation, specifically to slice through the skin and tissue before the bone. It would be hooked around the damaged or contaminated limb and cut in a circular motion, and afterwards, a surgical saw would be used to disconnect the remaining muscle. Skin wouldn't be left to cover up what would otherwise be an open wound, so it wasn't the wisest plan. Because of the low survival rate, the only pro was that the procedure could be performed in under two minutes.

Fortunately for the people of the village, the wisewoman wouldn’t attempt to use the piece of equipment for its initial application; she used it for rituals instead, which was why the bone had before-mentioned significance. Animals were traditional offerings, as the previous shaman had demonstrated, and any object that was closer to their being led them to their grave with less misery. This was a falsified notion, of course, but both of the shamen deemed it to be otherwise. Every life around the female held major importance, even the pesky boars along the borders, despite her sinister humor. This was especially true for the lives she believed she could've rescued- which was all lives in her mind, including those who were on their deathbed due to their lifespan; after the previous shaman's passing in particular, she became a bit of a recluse. Those who hunted for recreation were ridiculed by her, a lecture often being executed, and it was the same for those who wasted any material that could be reused.

As a reaction to Atticus’s response, she pursed her lips marginally. She invocated upon the ancestors internally, hoping that there wouldn't be any demands for a ritual anytime soon- at least not for four to seven days. Hoping to ease the pressure on the lad, she replied, "I do not wish to stress you, so please take your time."

Acknowledging the wisecrack, the female let out a simple hum. “I hope you aren’t pulling my leg here, Ironshaper.” She teased, the corners of her mouth rising ever so slightly. “It’s an easy task for a shaman to differentiate human bones from those of an animal, and you should know I detest liars.”

After that encounter with the whimsical girl, Hunter felt a bit... Lighter. That was the only way he could explain it in his mind. Looking nice was one thing, but being told he looked nice just brought his spirits up. He made his way back to his shop with a lively gait, leather shoes tapping lightly on stone.

Once he had made it back to the darkened, dusty workshop, Hunter immediately moved towards a wall of shelves that could only be properly described as an absolute clusterfuck of material. He hummed to himself as he tried to work through various scraps and sheets of fabric, pulling out the larger pieces of leather he could find. He had laid out about five sizable pieces on the table behind him, all in decent condition. He hummed lowly in thought, gathering up four pieces and leaving behind a more supple, thinner sheet that would suit clothing more than a sheathe. With the rolled up leathers under his arm, he walked out of his shop, following the smoke to the forge.

"I heard a certain someone needed leather?" Hunter called out in his deep voice, smiling kindly at the medicine woman and smith as he approached.

As the clouds rolled in and blocked the Sun, Cerys grew chilly. She opened her eyes once more and stretched one of her legs out of the water. The skin on her toes was beginning to prune up and her leg was covered in gooseflesh. Cerys supposed she had better be on her way before someone comes and scolds her for loitering or something like that.

She brought her knees up and rolled them onto the dock, accidentally kicking one of her shoes into the lake in the process. Cerys cringed as she heard the thunk of the leather hit the water. Oh no, that didn't sound good.

She stood absentmindedly staring at the surface of the water for a second, debating on whether she should jump in after the shoe. However, by the time she made up her mind not to do it, it was too late anyhow. The shoe had already dropped out of eyesight, to sit forever in the depths of the lake. Cerys hoped her bothersome little shoe would provide some comfort to the sea critters below. Or would they be afraid of such a foreign object intruding in their habitat? She bent down and hooked the mouth of her lone dry shoe with her finger and stood straight again, bringing the shoe up with her. She left a trail of wet footprints behind her as she walked towards the main street.

Atticus raised his hands, stating "You have caught me. Forgive me?" And with a slight chuckle, added "I'll take the full seven days, then. I know it's important to have, but quality takes time." He sighed. He didn't want to leave her without an essential tool, hopefully the spare would do. "Now, on the matter of cost." he said, with a sigh. Honestly, he didn't want to charge their medicine woman with the tools she needed, however, he needed to at least cover the costs of materials. Anything of equal value would do.

Creeeeeak.

The door opened with an odd creak, Atticus frowned, he would have to grease the thing again. However, the frown disappeared when he heard a familiar voice and the word he really needed to hear, "Leather."

"Hunter! Thank you, with that, that new guard boy can finally get his own personal blade, complete with sheath. I trust the money enclosed was enough?" Atticus said. He really didn't know what was enough.

"Ah, that's a shame. Although, I can supply you with those bones to make the knife genuine," she responded, her relentless teasing seeming to never come to an end. As his words crossed her ears, however, Rue's mood shifted for the worst, and she soon felt a tinge of regret. Perhaps she should've stated the urgency of the circumstance, but she had figured that the blacksmith's hands were tied with his craft. What with the known final product, the female decided that the concise waiting period wouldn't harm her, especially not for a piece of equipment she may not need for that entire stretch.

Upon hearing about the payment, her lips pursed. She certainly wasn't packed, although this was because she didn't typically charge for anything besides ceremonies and rites. However, she tugged the pouch previously resting in her pockets, the coins rattling due to the space available inside. Rue peeked within the container, assuming she had enough to pay for the commission, and satisfied with the amount, she held the object out for the blacksmith to take. "If this isn't enough, I'd certainly be able to pay the debt off within the time it would take to forge it."

The scrapping of the wooden door against the ground interrupted the trade-off, however. Glancing towards the direction of the noise, she came eye-to-eye with the tailor, Hunter Flynn. Frankly, she knew very little about the male, but that was the precise reason she thoroughly appreciated him. Never before had he come in her establishment to get patched up, which was something she was grateful for. Nevertheless, there were a few times she fretted that he was too submerged in isolation to come to her for aid, but she prayed that wasn't the situation. With a brief nod, she acknowledged the giant in the room.

"More than enough, thank you." Hunter nodded as he set the leathers down on the nearest flat surface.  He saw the medicine woman briefly nod to him and returned the gesture. After the small exchange, he was about to just turn and leave with some parting comments. That was, if he hadn't overheard the conversation about the woman being in debt over a tool she needed.

After clearing his throat and doing a bit of awkward shuffling, he spoke up. "So ah. I couldn't help but hear that you needed a tool, yes? Perhaps I could cover the cost for you?" He looked down at Rue with a kindly smile. "I mean, I don't think someone who does the work you do should have to be in debt."

Barely hearkening the male, Rue was in a daze, her concentration locked onto the lucid appearance of the tailor. Her head lolled to her shoulder as she attempted to conclude what plants were used to create the dye. Perhaps it was created with the mix of roses and lavender, or maybe the male found a mass of camellia petals. She supposed the basics- strawberries, cherries, and raspberries- could be used as well, but she believed a vast amount would be needed to use such ingredients.

When his sentence was registered in her mind, she was completely pop-eyed. "Thank you, Flynn," she mumbled, continuing her streak of calling villagers by their surnames. "Truly, that's asking too much out of you. I do appreciate the offer, though."

Cerys took her precious time as she made her way back to her home, leisurely strolling through the main street, pausing at every window to look at the goods on display. She took a moment to stop outside a small bakery and inhaled the aroma of fresh baked bread. Oh, how divine it smelled. Cery's couldn't remember the last time she stepped foot in a bakery, perhaps when she was very young.

She stared at the bread rack in the bakery's window, her mouth watering and her stomach grumbling at the sight of it. Maybe I could just go in and take a roll, and leave an I.O.U for the baker? she considered. Then she shook her head, frowning to herself. No, Cerys, you can't do that. It's stealing. Stealing is wrong. That baker works hard every day and you have no right to just waltz in and take something. She heaved her shoulders in an exaggerated sigh. Perhaps I do need a job, after all. Then I could buy all the bread I wanted.

She forlornly put a hand on the glass as a final goodbye to the food, then turned and continued walking down the street, shoe still in hand. A stray cat wove its way through her feet, causing Cerys to bend down and scratch its chestnut-colored head. "Oh, hello there," she said to the creature. "I'm sure that baker would give you something to eat, wouldn't he? What with your big ears and tiny paws, you're irresistible." The cat said nothing and appeared disinterested as Cerys continued to speak to it. "You look so frail. I'd give you something to eat, but," she held out her shoe for the stray to inspect it, "I don't think cats eat shoes."

"Well at least allow me to cover some of the expenses. It's the least I can do for someone who does so much for the village." Hunter insisted, leaning back ever so slightly as to not tower over the shorter woman. Well, he had to do that often either way. "And I won't be taking no for an answer." He added after a second of thought, giving a devious little smirk at gaining what he thought was the upper hand.

Guard Station

The guards at the front guard station which is near the forest had about 10 guards stationed. Currently they were simply relaxing about since barely anyone ever comes to visit Ember Falls. A few of them were doing some dice bets while some were just looking outward with a very dull face.

"You know... sometimes I wish there was some real action," one of the guards commented as he yawned loudly. Another guard nodded in silence as he was just too bored to even speak. Everyday was regular routine to these guards as generally they would just watch the forest and the road to see if anyone would come and go.

Then the man in red robes appeared from the forest as he carried his large blade on his left shoulder as if it was light. The guards would immediately stop what they were doing to approach the man with their swords and shields.

"Halt. State your name and business here in Ember Falls," one of the guards asked as these guards became cautious. First off there was finally something interesting happening, and second the man was casually carrying a weapon and wearing a suspicious red robe. It seemed obvious they would be careful.

The swordsman gave a small smile and said, "Name?  You don't need to know it. I'm here for the Jewel. Mind telling me where it is?"

This made the guards suddenly surround him with their swords and shields at the ready. "We don't know what your talking about. State your name and business or else... we're going to have to take drastic measures." The swordsman let out a laugh.

"I guess the guards know nothing then. Whatever... I guess I'll have to...," he then starts to ready his blade. "Force my way." The archers who were hiding suddenly took aim and three guards were down. The rest quickly went into action as some of the guards went into the woods to pursue the archers while three of them focused on the swordsman. The swordsman then let out a mighty swing while the guards gave careful strikes aiming for any vital spots. The three guards immediately dropped down bleeding profusely and dead.

He was about to walk forward when suddenly he was stopped by Richter who drew his spear and readied for combat. A swing from the red robes was blocked by Richter's careful block. The swordsman looked to some of the men he had with him, "Search the forest. The jewels there. I have something I need to take care of."

"How do you know about that?" Richter asked his face looking gravely serious. The swordsman, with a grin, said, "Thats for us to know and for you to never find out."

The Back Guard Station

Meanwhile the guard station that was located at the back of Ember Falls which lead toward the mountains was under attack by the swordsmen dispatched by the bladed swordsman. There were about 8 there so 8 v 15 didn't look too good for the guards. A fight now occurred and people were quickly led into shelter at the Central Guard Station by the few guards who were in the village. The rest of them were fighting the swordsman and archers. Mayor Shakti would at his house who saw the conflict happen.

"They're here... I didn't think they would find this place."

One of the guards would then rush to locate Alister, the current Head Guard.

Note: Something drastic is occurring! It's up to you whether or not you'll either help or evacuate towards the central guard station.

The bard sat playing still, his song growing more interesting. He listened for every note intently, then out of nowhere he heard shouts coming from the forest surrounding Ember Falls. The next chord he struck rang sour, as he was distracted by the noise. Jacob frowned and slung hit lute across his back. He went into his small home and opened the chest at the foot of his bed, inside lay simple leather armor, and a slender steel cutlass. He put on his equipment, and adjusted it tightly. Jacob sheathed his cutlass across his back on the opposite shoulder of his lute. He hurried outside and ran to the smithy, bursting into the shop, his brow furrowed. "Atticus! There's trouble out in the woods. I think we're gonna need every able bodied person we've got here in Ember Falls." Jacob set his hand against his forehead and breathed deeply, calming himself before he set back out there.

@Nicademus

Alister walked back to the village with his hand on the hilt of his sword. Having to stop several times to solve some small conflicts he continued to move along. After checking up on a few shops he came to the center of the village. His grip tightened on his sword as he saw a guard running toward him screaming his name. "What's the Problem!?" he worryingly asked the guard. "Theres been an assault at the forest guard station!" he answered. "shit. Alright round up the men and tell them to come with me. The other half must move everyone to the central guard station immediately." The guard nodded and ran off. "EVERYONE There has been a assault on Ember Falls if any of you wish to engage please arm yourselves. I wish for as much of you to stay safe, so you do not have to come. I wish for you to see your families another day, for it is my duty for that to happen."  he turned to the guards behind him and started barking orders. "Make sure all homes are cleared.  Mayor, Women, children, and elders are priority! I am going to need several of you to stay back incase they breach the lines.  the rest of you lets move."  he turned and ran to action.

Atticus gave a sigh. He wasn't going to put the medicine woman in debt. That's not how he lived his life. Simply pushing the money back into her hands, he said "Lets just figure out something else later. You need to think about saving that money for a meal, I know you don't charge a lot of people in your care...." Atticus gave a gentle smile, but he was worried himself. He was gonna lose a lot of materials for this, but he couldn't bring himself to charge her. Not a woman in the same career as the woman who took care of his bumps and bruises as a child..."

Craaack!

The door flung open and smacked against the wall of the smithy, as the town bard came bursting in. Trouble... woods? Atticus then heard a ruckus off in the distance, towards the back guard station.

Crash! Clang, Thung!

Blades clashing. Bandits, damn. He headed over to his desk, and picked up his freshly made blade. Reaching behind, he found another blade, of earlier make, and held it out for Hunter. "Help our dear wisewoman evacuate, would you? This is for your protection. And Miss Rathbone," He said, turning to her with a smile, "Your payment will be making sure you patch us all up after this. Fair?" Hunter was a tall man, and Atticus was sure he was capable of guarding the wisewoman. Beyond that, he wasn't sure, and so Atticus would go and fight.

The guard that would find Alister would arrive and say, "Wait sir there's something Richter needs you to protect. The other guards will do their part but it's important that you come with me." The other guards would start to check each home and guide the civilians to safety. The back guard station was handling itself alright thanks to others helping out. Those wounded are being treated by any with medical skills. The guards in the forest began to pursue the archers. No action had taken place yet. At the secret cavern, the guards there would quickly close the entrance behind them and rush toward the end of the hallway to find a dead end. From there another switch was activated leading to a secret room.

"What... what is this?" A new one asked.

"This is what Ember Falls has been protecting," the veteran guard replies.

Richter and the bladesman were within 5 meters of each other as they held up their weapons.

"As happy as I am to see someone not die about 5 seconds after meeting me... I'm gonna have to finish this." He rushed toward Richter and swung horizontally from his right. Richter blocked using his spear but found a surprise when tve blade suddenly grew what seemed to be small sharp demonic teeth from the edges. There was also a symbol on the center. It was a rhombus with four lines coming from it.

"What?! Teeth? And that symbol.... that weapon it's...," Richter then knew who this swordsman was and realized this fight became a lot more unexpected.

"Well looks like you know about it. The Fear Ripper, one of the three weapons of Jack. Now then... let's have some fun." The teeth suddenly began to vibrate and move around the edges of the blade like a chainsaw. Richter would in response immediately back away only to find his spear cut in half.

"Only a few seconds and an ordinary spear is cut... they aren't demonic weapons for nothing. Guess I have no choice." He would then summon what seems to be two spears. Both spears are identical and have a gold color to them. The sharp ends have a trident look to them as well.

"Time to get serious," he says.

Note: With plot posts, I'll be controlling the guard's actions as well as the intruder's. No one else is allowed to do so.

"Do as I have told you. I will come back for you all." Alister ran following the guard. whats more important than the village, and why? he began to wonder. Alister needed more information on them so he started to bombard the guard with questions. "Where is Ritchter? Whats more important than the people? where are we going?" his questions continued on and on. "Tell me what the hell is going on god damn it!" he demanded.

"Richter is currently fighting off against one of the intruders. We're going somewhere... rather important. Just follow me and I can explain it in full detail," the guard said as he would lead Alister towards the deep part of the forest. From there they would head towards the same point where the previous guards came on through and activated the hidden switch. The rock stone door opened and the guard proceeded to lead Alister inside.

"You see Ember Falls is a village generally secluded from most of society for a reason. Mayor Shakti, Richter and a few of the guards including me are the only few to know of this. This village was tasked with guarding a jewel. It's called the 'Eye of Shadows.' I'll explain more once we head on in deeper and I'm sorry with giving you more questions. Richter was going to tell of you of this once you became head guard but then... well the intruders showed up."

The other guards who were at the village did as Alister said and aided with the villagers. The fights between the archers, swordsmen and guards were still ongoing. After all the village guards didn't want to take drastic measures and risk pointless deaths so they were being very careful with these fights. Being outnumbered wasn't an easy situation to deal with but hopefully backup starts showing up.

Frankly, the wisewoman questioned Atticus's choice. Materials were difficult to come by, especially when the village only had a few traders pass into the borders every year; otherwise, the male would have to salvage the components or buy them from another, and she didn't wish to force that task upon the blacksmith. However, she couldn't allow the tailor to pay for her equipment either. It was mostly in part to her ideology and less to her pride, and she had to abide by both reasons. Rue prayed mutely to the deities that she could repay the blacksmith back before his generosity caused him any stress.

When the entryway was slammed into, dread was instilled in the core of the woman's mind. The words of the bard, who had barged in, and the noises from the outdoors confirmed her suspicions. Never in her life, or in the life of the previous shaman for all she knew, had she been in such a situation. Criminals were rare in the town, thanks to the guards for the most part, and so, she had only understood their intent from the pages dedicated to them in tales and journals. Patch them up afterwards? A battle wasn't what she had prayed for, not like this. "Evacuate?" She mirrored, as if testing out the word. "With a solid poke, you could go the way of all flesh within minutes. I cannot let that happen, not with the casualties that may've already occurred."

Jacob ran to the woods where he heard the commotion previously. There he saw the ex Captain of the guard fighting the man in red. The weapon he held was scary to say the least. Jacob pulled his cutlass from behind his back, getting into a ready position as he did. "I could write songs about that weapon, but I'm afraid that'd be stealing." He nodded at the man in red. "That's one of three of Jack isn't it? It's as terrifying as I would have imagined it to be."  Jacob then turned to Richter, eyeing his weapons. "Those don't look standard issue." Jacob began to worry that he may be a bit out of his league here, but he never thought he would live forever to begin with. He stood next to Richter, his cutlass at the ready, and his eyes set on the Fear Ripper.

@YoungX

Richter turned to see Jacob, the bard. The bladesman holding Fear Ripper smiled a bit as someone can learn to appreciate the weapon's... demonic quality.

Fear Ripper is a part of a set of three denonic weapons. Each carry the demonic entity that make up the one known as 'Jack.'

Jack Frost, Pyro Jack and Jack the Ripper. These three demons were said to be sealed and stored inside three weapons. As such they possess power and are sought after by power-seeking individuals and collectors.

"Well... yes these aren't standard issue. Though... I'm afraid a cutlass won't do much good here. That weapon tore through my regular spear in 5 seconds of shredding."

Richter then asked Jacob, "If I'm mistaken your Jacob the bard yes? Can you use it? Can you use Jang Qi?"

The bladesman, tured or hearing idle talk during a fight lunged toward Richter. This time the tridents were blocking the sword despite the blade performing it's shredding effect. The sound being emitted was similar to that of a sword being sharpened.

"Those tridents... I swear they seem familiar. Whatever this should be a good use of my time." The bladesman then had a thought. 'I'm only just buying time anyway,' he thought to himself..

Richter, still guarding, looked to Jacob and decided to ask a favor.

"Actually... I've got a favor to ask. Can you go help fight off the swordsman at the back guard station? Apparantely the guards are outnumbered and are struggling to keep them at bay. They could really use the help."

Alister continued to follow the guard to the forest and though to stone wall. Hearing his explanation he knew he must do what Richter says. His hand dropped to his sword and gripped it tightly. "When where you all intending to tell me this?" he asked firmly. he understood keeping it a secret, for the name explained most of it. "This Eye of the Shadows , they are after it yes? If so, what can this thing do?" he wondered.  "For something to be kept secret so tightly and hidden so secure means Its a serious threat, I need to know..... what does it do?" he asked firmly.

The guard would stop in his tracks and looked at Alister. Despite the urgency, he feels that Alister does technically have the right to know.

"We were going to tell you today since you just became Captain. It's ironic that the ambush had to have happened." He then took a deep breath knowing that explaining the 'Eye of the Shadows' wasn't easy.

"As I'm everyone knows, there existed guardians who protected this world. The 'Keepers of the Shadow,' as they are famously called had a specific item in their possession. Each of these items are remnants of Majuu Guelimja, the Shadow Emperor. Back during the times of the old world, Majuu Guelimja sought for immortality. A simple goal and with that goal he did whatever he could to get his hands on it. I don't know the full story as only a few records are said to exist about him. Long story short, the Keepers sealed his essence away into different items. The Eye of the Shadows is one such item. As for what it does well... we really don't know. The Keeper of the Eye only kept it hidden away here. The descendants who would later form Ember Falls guarded that item for centuries to come. Richter was the most recent person tasked with guarding the item."

The guard would then press the hidden switch before looking at a bunch of heavily wounded guards.

"What happened?! Are you all alright?" The guard asked as he would help tend to them.

One of the guards would mustdr whatever strength they had and said, "I-it's gone... The Eye... It's gone..."

Cerys froze, crouched on the sidewalk with the cat, hearing commotion coming from the direction of the forest. She stopped petting the stray. It also appeared spooked, as it hurriedly dashed away in the opposite direction. She stood up to peer in the direction she assumed the sound originated from, but she couldn't make out where it was. Should she go towards the sound and see what was going on, or should she run back to her home, like most of the reasonable people in the street?

Cerys couldn't make up her mind. She wished her cat would come back; maybe he could give her an answer. It probably wasn't a good idea to stand dumbfoundedly in the open like she was doing, but she couldn't get herself to move.
