The homeroom bell rang throughout the school. The boys had finally entered Middle School not too far back, and it didn’t seem like everyone’s interests devolved into the female anatomy like the other 6th graders they knew growing up. Well, as far as Kenny knew. The other boys were beginning to catch onto the stuff he had known since Elementary, but Kenny didn’t think most of them found it that interesting.

The boy walked into the classroom, waving at the other students. The town was so small that his class hardly changed at all ever since Kindergarten. The boy took his seat in the back of the room, resting his head on his hand after pulling his notebook out of his bag. He checked his schedule for the day. After school he wanted to go to the afterschool cheer tryouts, and later on look for quick ways to get money. While walking Karen to school one morning, the girl noticed a doll in the window and fell in love. She quickly accepted that she wouldn’t get it, but Kenny felt bad seeing her going from so happy to so disappointed so fast. He wanted to try to get the doll for her as quickly as possible without their dad knowing.

The boy got distracted from his thoughts as Kyle and Cartman loudly started arguing next to him, probably about something really trivial. Kenny never thought their relationship could get any worse since 4th grade, but apparently it had. Kenny sighed as the two fought, and gazed towards the doorway. He hoped Butters would show up today. Kyle and Cartman would probably be at each other’s necks the rest of the day, and Stan was feeling too depressed since Wendy broke up with him again recently. He looked back down at his book again, and began to messily doodle on it, waiting for the bell.

Hearing the homeroom bell ringing, Butters quickly walked through the school towards his homeroom. He didn’t want to be late. And if his parents found out…He’d be grounded all over again. His parents were just as strict as they had been when had been ten. In some ways, they had become more strict it seemed.

When Butters reached the classroom door, he could hear Cartman and Kyle arguing rather loudly. Their relationship had only gotten worse it seemed, if that were even possible. Stepping into the classroom, the blond let out a sight of relief. He had made it in time. He needed to try and do better so his parents didn’t have to ground him. At least, that was still how Butters saw it.

Glancing around the room, Butters saw that most of his classmates were already there. Being a small town, Butters class hadn’t changed much since kindergarten. He could see Cartman and Kyle, both of who were still arguing and glaring daggers at one another. Stan meanwhile looked pretty down still. Likely because of his recent break up with Wendy. Butters felt bad for him.

Butters then caught sight of Kenny and smiled. Shrugging his backpack off his shoulders, he quickly made his way over to his desk. “Hey, Kenny,” he greeted, sitting down as the bell rang. Butters’ desk was situated near Kenny’s, something the boy was glad for. Kenny was one of the few people in their class who had always been nice to him. Despite his perverted nature, Kenny was genuinely a good guy in Butters’ opinion. “How have you been? Did you get that homework done?” Now that they had started middle school, they had been getting more homework it seemed. Butters sometimes felt that it took him forever to finish his homework. But, he always tried to make sure he finished it.

“Yeah, it took me a while though,” Kenny smiled, even though it was concealed by his heavy hood. “I had to help Karen out with her homework as well, and it wasn’t easy since back when we had Garrison he never taught us anything.” Karen had finally made it to 3rd grade. She had a teacher that actually taught the class, but that still didn’t make the work itself easier.

“But I don’t mind helping her,” He reached into his bag again, pulling out his math notebook. He flipped to the pages with his homework and set it aside. Once he got situated, he turned towards Butters. “So, are you doing anything after school?” The boy hoped he wasn’t busy. He never told anyone yet about wanting to try out for the South Park Cows cheer team, and wanted Butters’ opinion first.

Butters smiled at the mentioning of Kenny's little sister. Although Butters didn't know her too well, Karen had always seemed like a nice kid. And it was clear that Kenny cared a great deal for her. He seemed like he was a great big brother. "Yeah, he never really taught us much, huh?" Butters agreed, chuckling, "I hope she has a better teacher." It would make school easier for her in the long run.

As Kenny got out his notebook, Butters watched quietly, nodding at his words. Tilting his head slightly at Kenny's question, Butters paused for a moment to think. "Uh...I don't have anything planned," he said finally. Really, all he would likely do was just go home and do his homework. He usually didn't have anything too exciting planned. "Why? What's up?" He asked, his tone becoming curious.

“Well...” Kenny began, his face turning a tinge of pink under his parka. “You know how sports tryouts are starting now?” He tapped his fingers together. “Uh, I think I’m gonna try out. For cheer,” He looked down, tapping his fingers on the desk.

“Do you think that’s be weird?” The boy looked back at Butters. “For a boy to do cheer?” He shifted in his seat, hoping for a positive reaction. He thought Butters would be the best person to tell first, since he was the least likely to call him slurs if he didn’t agree.

As Kenny asked if he knew knew about the sports tryouts, Butters nodded. Was Kenny going to try out for football or something? Butters was surprised when Kenny said he was going to try out for cheer. But, that surprise was quickly replaced by a bright, encouraging smile. "I don't think that's weird. I think you'd be good at it, so you should go for it! It could be a lot of fun."

Butters had never been one for cruelty, so even if he had thought it was weird for Kenny to tryout for cheer, he never would have insulted him. He had a feeling some of the other boys might give him some grief about it though. Honestly, he really did think that Kenny would be good at it. "So you're going to try out after school today?"

“Yeah!” Kenny closed his eyes happily, feeling relieved that Butters wasn’t making a big deal out of the situation. “I always thought it could be fun. The other sports are too dangerous, I’ll leave those to everyone else,” He shrugged.

“Besides, I’ll be able to hang out with all the girls!” He laughed. But if he were honest, he didn’t care much about being around the girls. He could always shrug it off as an excuse to have an excuse to always flirt with the girls, but he genuinely wanted to try the sport.

“Uh, but anyways. Would you mind coming with me later?” The boy’s voice got a bit softer as he asked. “I just don’t want to show up there alone, you know?” He didn’t want to end up being a laughingstock and not defend himself. Butters stood up for his friends. And even if he wasn’t too convincing, he had heart and it made Kenny feel a bit more confident to know someone cared.

Butters nodded when Kenny said that the other sports were dangerous, "Yeah, they are pretty dangerous, huh?" He then chucked at Kenny's next comment about the girls. Honestly though, Butters didn't care too much about if he was around girls or not. It was something he hadn't exactly told anyone about though.

Smiling when Kenny asked if he'd go with him, Butters quickly nodded, "Yeah, I'd be happy to go with you, Kenny," he replied, his tone getting a bit lower so as to not be heard by the others. "It will be fun, and I'm sure you'll do great." He knew that some of the other kids might laugh at Kenny for trying out for cheer, which bothered Butters. If Kenny wanted to do cheer, why shouldn't he be able to do it.

"So, I'll meet you after school then," Butters said as their teacher walked into the room. Flashing Kenny one more smile, Butters turned his attention to the teacher as they called for the class to settle down. He was excited about going with Kenny to the cheer tryouts, as he wanted to see how well his friend did.

“Thanks, Butters,” Kenny smiled as he turned towards the teacher, glancing towards Butters at the side.

Kenny was anxious throughout the entire school day. As he spoke to his friends during lunch, he kept up a charade of neutrality. He told them that he was busy for the rest of the day to help his dad with something, but never gave a clear explanation on what it actually was.

He poked at his food gently with his fork, staring down in thought. He sat next to Butters at the table full of their friends, kicking his legs back and forth softly.

Butters smiled warmly at Kenny in reply before looking towards their teacher. He briefly glanced over at Kenny out of the corner of his eye before looking back ahead. He was looking forward to the tryouts, knowing that Kenny would do well.

The time between then and lunch seemed to drag by in Butter's opinion. He hadn't mentioned to anyone about Kenny's plans after school. It didn't seem that Stan, Kyle, or Cartman knew about it. Butters already knew what Cartman would say if he knew. It bothered Butters, as well as angered him, when he thought about how Cartman could be so cruel to even his friends.

When lunchtime finally rolled around, Butters sat beside Kenny at the table with their other friends. As the others talked among themselves, Butter's gaze drifted over to Kenny. He noticed how the blond was poking at his food rather than eating it. He figured that Kenny was feeling a bit nervous about cheer tryouts. "You okay, Kenny?" Butters asked, his voice lowering to a whisper, "Are you feeling nervous about later?"
