-- as you well know, no one ever wanted to have powers. since the very first cursed individual was discovered in the 1940's (you would know his name from history class, of course: James Davis, the college debate team prodigy who suddenly began to spit literal fire from his mouth whenever he spoke), it seems that about every one in 100,000 is born with a secret power - unlikely to be revealed before their eighteenth birthday. this development is considered a genetic failure and is clearly a curse. however, where the powers come from is unknown and it's unclear why they are here. maybe it's science or magic, God or a demon's curse. no matter what it is, it's real, and it's a terrifying reality for about seventy thousand people on this planet.
unfortunately, there is yet little known about these powers despite years of intervention and research. as of now, it is clear that powers develop around a person's eighteenth birthday - though some have developed as early as infancy and others not until middle age. considering all known cases of cursed individuals, researchers have also discovered, curiously enough, that no two people possess exactly the same power. the curse is like a fingerprint, entirely unique to the individual. however, the key attribute to these abilities - and the reason why they have been called a curse - is that they go against everything that the cursed person is. they could be considered a nuisance, at best, and a crippling disability at worst. to help you understand, let me provide some examples. the one boy who hates heights one day finds that he will randomly begin to lift up from the earth and fly: a power of flight that he can't stand to use and which turns on when he least expects it. the fisherman who spent all his life and earned his paycheck in the water suddenly has fire in his veins - he can control fire, yes, but he is also made of it, and will die if he goes into the water. the nurse who wishes for nothing more but to heal the wounded is struck with the horrible realization that she has abnormal superhuman strength and that the slightest of her once-gentle touches will break her patients' skin and bones. certainly if these aren't curses, what else would you call them?
luckily, there is a place for these poor souls! after all, you can't live a normal life in society when you're cursed. salvator academy is a government owned-and-funded organization built specifically to help the cursed overcome their fears and learn to deal with their powers in a school environment. the academy is so important to the well-being of individuals with powers (IWP) that it a requirement and law that all IWP "enroll." why wouldn't you want to? it is the one place IWP can go to be understood, comforted, and prepared to handle their powers before being set free into the world once again. nobody dares mention that everyone who's ever gone to salvator academy never actually seems to come back out. it hardly matters.
of course it does matter to you, doesn't it? after all, you have just developed a frightening new ability you despise and the only place left for you in the world is salvator academy. congratulations. [/div] [/div] [/div] [/div] [div class="textb"] [div class="backb"] return [/div] [div class="hidden"] [div class="scrollb"] [div class="textboxb"] this here is my very informal introduction post to a roleplay i've had cooking for a while! it's probably pretty clear at this point that catharsis is not much of a superhero story. it's more of a story about regular people who are horrified to find they have strange powers that are completely opposite to their personalities or lifestyles - and thus get sent to salvator academy & end up getting involved in something terrible. salvator is a very strange academy created by the government. the school itself seems nice enough to an outsider. the teachers and school staff, despite not having powers themselves, are kind and are great help to those who need it. but there's a mystery going on here and things might be a bit shadier than they seem! and there's a lot at stake in figuring out what exactly is going on. [/div] [/div] [/div] [/div] [div class="textc"] [div class="backc"] return [/div] [div class="hidden"] [div class="scrollc"] [div class="textboxc"] β¦ ONE. follow all of RPN's rules. show respect to each other & just be kind.
β¦ TWO. this will be a literate roleplay. though i do value quality over quantity, i will expect multi-paragraph responses and proper grammar/punctuation/etc.
β¦ THREE. i will be starting a discord for this rp if it gets enough attention. joining will not be a requirement but it will be super, duper encouraged to help with plotting & discussion.
β¦ FOUR. there are no roles or slots to fill but i will be setting a limit of 10 characters (not including my own). i'm not sure if this RP will get that much attention, but i don't want to have too many people that it's hard to keep on track of all the characters and the plot. i may accept or reject characters based on what i deem to be a good match for this roleplay & my desires for its plot.
β¦ FIVE. please do not come in expecting a light, happy superhero story. there will be dark themes and mature ideas. i'm going for an almost horror take on the superhero tale with supernatural undertones. keep that in mind going forward! [/div] [/div] [/div] [/div] [/div]
