camp winterian wyrd

rp basis: winterian wyrd is a camp based in alaska, u.s.a. (midguard). the camp serves as accommodation for young (12-21 year old) demigods (children of those in the norse pantheon), giants, elves, dwarves and valkyrie-in-training. the camp was originally introduced as a formality to encourage friendly bonds between those of other realms and as a safe-haven/safety precaution to make sure no demigods have mysteriously disappeared over the summer. it is run by the norse giantess, skadi, goddess of winter and the hunt, and is only accessible by traveling on the back of lyngbakr (a monster whale, in this case, a friendly monster whale named dory) from the coast of the alaskan mainland to an island that his been hidden from mankind through a glimmer.

the camp runs over the winter, celebrating yule (the winter solstice) and other norse festivities. there are many activities which encourage socialisation and skill building for all those who attend e.g. archery, blacksmithing, sparring, team building and other training. this rp is not heavily centred around one specific plot, but more so focused on character interaction.


so! hi all, we're mxlly (aka moxie, molly) , diwa (aka aria, travey), and deer (aka twinkle, vee), and we hope this brief overview has sparked some interest in you! as previously mentioned this rp centers around norse mythology and the many beings within it. further details will be provided if this gains enough interest to begin of course.

basic rules and information:
- one post per week
- posts of 2 paragraphs min. (approx. 17 lines)
- there will be 2 demigod children per god limit to avoid imbalances, first come first serve
- you're allowed to create up to 4 characters as long as they are each of a different species (demigod, elf, dwarf, giant - their physical appearance may be altered by the glimmer, much like the cyclops tyson from the pjo series)
- there is a limit of 6 characters whom are valkyries in training (valkyries count as demigods). as of now, they have all been taken.
- if there are any further questions you'd like answered, the gms mxlly , diwa , and deer would be happy to help!
note: elves, dwarves, and giants follow a different age timeline compared to demigods. for elves, 100 years would approximately equate to 1 human year, hence 1800 being around 18, etc., etc. while for dwarves and giants, 10 years would approximately equate to 1 human year, hence 210 being around 21 in human years.

• What do you imagine elves to look like in relation to humans? Are they taller or shorter? Do they have the classic pointed ears, odd proportions, or any other "classic" Tolkein-esque elf features?
• What do you imagine dwarves to look like in relation to humans? I assume they would be shorter, as they usually are in folklore, but how much so? What would be the average height for a dwarf? Do they have the stereotypical stocky build, long facial hair and physical strength, or are they more like the dwarves and gnomes of English folklore?
• Do elves and dwarves have their own languages?
• Is there anything I should know about elf/dwarf culture, or their relationships with other races?
• Anything else I should know about them physiologically? Do they eat the same things as humans, are they susceptible to the same diseases, etc.?

? ; Elves vs. Humans - In Norse Mythology, the Alfars [ Elves ] were considered both good and bad and were separated between Ljósálfar [ light elves, the 'good' ones ] and Dökkálfar [ dark elves, the 'bad' ones ]. Ljósálfar's lived above ground or in Álfheimr ( one of the nine realms ) while the Dökkálfar lived below grounds, much like dwarves. The Light Elves' appearance are considered more beautiful, slim, tall creatures with pale skin and hair while the Dark Elves have a darker complexion though still beautiful and slim. In relations to humans, both Elves are considered alluring and mesmerising to gaze upon. As for stature, the Elves would be slightly taller than an average human so most female Elves would be around 5'8 and most male Elves would be around 6'0. All the Elves do have the classic pointed ears (which is very cute) so they do have the classic Tolkein-esque features! Some Elves were considered gender fluid and some did not adhere to sexual roles.

At Camp, there are Elves who stay on the island with Skadi. The Elves there are teachers who can provide lessons in healing, archery, and the use of one's senses to listen, smell, touch, and taste their surroundings. Great survival instinct tools.

? ; Dwarves vs. Humans - The dwarves are much shorter on an average of 4'6 in height. The dwarves will definitely have varying sizes and weight, but the majority of male dwarves will have a stocky build, long facial hair, and brute strength. We imagine them to be the dwarves you see in Tolkein's world. The dwarves live in Svartalfheim ( one of the nine realms ) which is underground and may sometimes be known as Niðavellir. The appearance of the underground resembles Moira in LOTR since Tolkein branched off of Norse Mythology in some aspects in his writing.

At Camp, the dwarves who stay on the island with Skadi are usually blacksmiths and craftsmen who provides armory, weapons, and such for the campers and are sometimes even teachers.

? ; Relations: - The personality of the Elves and Dwarves are most definitely similar to that of what Tolkein has written to what we imagine. The Dwarves are much more prone to getting into trouble and are eager to get more involved in the brute and scheming of things ( not afraid to get down and dirty and quite crude ) while the Elves are much more prone to least likely getting involved with mortals and others.

Outside of Camp, I imagine this is how the relations is between Elves and Dwarves. They may respect each other's crafts, but they still have this big rivalry (sometimes hostility between each other ) and all of that. There may be huge disputes and disagreements between the two races, but the Camp will help in bringing more harmony among the two.

Inside of camp, I imagine there's a much more civilised unity within. There may be some who may not like the compliance of being in the same company of others but, they still have to strictly adhere to being civil with each other as they are learning about each other's culture and learning to get along with one another.

? ; Language and Dialect: - Yes, I imagine that Elves ad Dwarves do have their own language and dialects!

? ; Psychologically: - All of them ( elves, giants, dwarves, humans ) eat the same nutrients and they can all be affected by the same if not similar diseases. Although some of the ailments may be different, they are still able to be affected all the same. The elves, dwarves, humans, and giants may have different ways to treat the diseases and ailments.

thank you for your interest! you may definitely claim a valkyrie-in-training as the child of Njord! but if you wish for your character to be a child of skadi, please let me know! i am actually making a child of Skadi and she will be a valkyrie-in-training, too !

the "pure" valkyries are the ones who live in asgard and are under odin already. however, for us, the demigod children are allowed an option in participating to become a valkyrie, so they are valkyries-in-training ( we call them "non"pure valkyries for the sake of understanding the concept a bit better! ). this will count as [one] character!

as for face claims for dwarves, elves, and giants (thank you for bringing it up) - it isn't necessary to use a faceclaim of how your character looks without a glimmer. you are most welcomed to, but you may also assume if you wish! there are some characters who don't mind "turning" off the glimmer and showing off their appearances, but there are some characters who do mind. [ you are welcome to use two photos to showcase the glimmer and the non glimmer if you'd like or describe ! ]
