Brainstorming ideas for document verification

... even if channels are secure, people are not. And not having secure channels would lead to chaos, not control.

It all depends on trust.  Usually there are copies of records, so even if a forgery is sent out, it will be discovered.  So an ultra secure and complex method of authentication would be combersum since there is an easy way to check.  The opertunitites for abuse in such a politically charaged environment I think outweigh the need for this additional level of security.

If the methd of sending information is neigh perfect, then the weak link is the person with the keys, who will be bribed/threatened/blackmailed into helping.  It just takes a few consperies enabled by this to bring the whole system down.

Stalin was going to purge medical doctors before he died.  Irony aside, he was going to imprison and kill thousands of doctors just to further his politcal goals.  He is also the type of control freak that would not allow comunications to go unmonitored.  So if anything, this 'secure' comunication would in fact be heavely monitored.

I think this thread is somewhat schizophrenic, which is partially my fault. Half of the people are talking about encrypting documents, while the other half are talking about authenticating documents, and a lot of people seem to have crossed wires.

I like the idea of the flower-authenticator myself.  I know everyone is looking to have one artifact on one end and one on another, but why not just a higher level artifact (one level 3 one as opposed to two level 1s or something) that can just check that whoever you THINK wrote this message actually did write it?  I mean maybe you have to give a definition?

"Jacib, King of Altrod" would make sure it was HIM, but you could also say "the King of Altrod" if you're not entirely sure WHO he is, but you just know what his office should be.

That way your artifact could be used for both official and personal documents.  When the King gets a letter from his wife and asks if it was written by "Jyra, Queen of Wind-Hill" it'll work just the same as when he asks if it was written by "The Realm Bureaucrat presiding over my Kingdom".

As for the appearance of it, it might change depending on the material.  Maybe the majority of Jade ones are like Still said, flowering pens/devices that wither/flower depending on the answer, but maybe a Starmetal one changes colour to show the answer, or maybe it's like a metronome, that flicks one way for yes, and the other for no.  Maybe Solar ones glow with sun-fire on the true writer, and Moonsilver ones are marble sized balls of metal which turn into a long cylinder if correct, or flatten out to a circle if it's the wrong writer?  I mean, that appearance would be irrelevant, but very fun!
