Blood Oath ((Deth x Detective Rascal))

In a land, long lost and forgotten, four races have joined forces. The entirety of the population is run by 4 leaders. Each one representing the different races. Under each leader is a council to report on the wishes of their individual peoples. Shain Shanks is the newest elected leader for the Vampire Colonies. He is also the youngest to have ever been elected, so a great pressure is placed on him. Within a council meeting with his elder vampires, they tell tale of a new clan that has formed amongst the humans. A clan of hunters. This information does not bode well for the peace that has been present between the races for centuries. They confronted the leader of the humans, to no avail. His mind was clear of any knowledge of such a clan. Also, the minds of the Lycans and of the Shape-changers were free of such knowledge as well.

With this dangerous knowledge, it has fallen to Shain to flush out this clan and protect his people, and the peace they held between the other races. It had long been ruled that Vampires only turn those who are willing to become part of their race, so he ruled out just turning the clan to his side. It was a rule that couldn't be broken, lest he start a war that had since long been forgotten. When he finally arrived at the whispered about cavern where this new clan was said to have laid claim, he was attacked.

He fought bravely, but was greatly outnumbered. When he thought all was lost, a woman came to his rescue. A human woman. She was exceptionally skilled, and somehow, easily fended off the attackers. When all was safe, she approached this beautiful man who lay nearly motionless on the ground. His wounds were grave, and she feared she had not been there in time to save him. She knelt, thinking to keep him company until he passed into the void that was death. At least he wouldn't die alone.

In his fear, anger, and pain, Shain bit this woman, having only been able to smell flesh and blood. He had nearly drained her before his senses came back to him, and he stopped himself. He realized that this was no ordinary human, but was still, as far as he knew, unwilling to become blood bound to a vampire. He thought to just kill her, and claim that she was one of his attackers. Though he knew, as he thought about it, that she wasn't and his kind would be able to tell from her memories.

So, he softly whispered the blood oath ritual that would help the venom turn her veins cold and give her immortality. He waited patiently, so that they could talk. He didn't want to start a war, he wanted to stop one from happening. And to do this, he had to somehow convince this woman not to claim he had bitten her without consent. This would be more difficult that he thought.

Kalla woke up with a start, eyes snapping open, and nearly jumped into a defensive position from her spot laying on the ground.

She felt cold, like the clothes she was wearing weren't keeping her warm enough, or like the ground had seeped all the coldness up into her own body. Though the cold didn't seem to slowly attack the warmth she had inside her, like it usually would on a freezing day, it felt as though the cold had already taken over the little ball of warmth and left her without any heat at all.

She pushed herself off the ground so that she was at least at the sitting up position, her legs still planted on the ground.

It took her less than a second to find a very good looking man sitting not far from her, the surprise of seeing him showed visibly with her body physically going back.

He looked like the man she had decided to wait for, wait for death to come to him and take away his suffering. Yet he didn't seem as though he was in pain anymore, or that there were injuries at all.

Shain jumped when there was sudden movement from the girl he had bitten. He threw his hands up, "Calm down." He said worriedly. He could guess what she was feeling, having gone from her simple human to a vampire was difficult and confusing. He eyed her warily, and approached even more carefully. His mind raced as he thought of what to do or say.

"I'm Shain." He said finally, holding a hand out to help her off the ground. "Let's talk." He spoke nervously, worry creasing his young face. He looked around, "Either here, or back at my home. Which ever." He added warily. He hadn't ever created a blood bond before, and he only vaguely remembered his time blood bound to the Vampire who had turned him. So he wasn't exactly sure of what to expect.

Kalla didn't accept the man's hand to get up, she didn't need it, and she was slightly mistrusting of him anyway.

Before, she didn't have need to worry about him, he was on death's doorstep. She had only stayed to make sure he wasn't alone when Death did come, it was a task she felt as though she had to do, to comfort the dying before the calm's embrace. But for all she knew, he had cheated that, which made her think that the man wasn't human at all.

"No, I think we'll talk here."

She was stern, no way was she going to go to this man's home to talk. Not at least till she learned as too why he had escaped death's grasp, or why she had ended up unconscious, and learned why he even stayed and waited for her to wake.

Shain let his hand fall to his side, and he crouched where he stood. "If your wondering, I'm a vampire." he explained quickly, the nervousness he felt building in his gut. He had always been uncomfortable around humans ever since he had become a vampire, since many in the early days always looked at him as if he had betrayed their race. "I bit you out of instinct to survive, and for that I am sorry." he continued, weighing his words carefully as he spoke. "I nearly killed you. To save your life I began the Blood Oath ritual." he stated. He figured he shouldn't be so frank with her, having only woken from the change, but he need her to know the truth of the situation.

"I understand you probably weren't exactly willing to enter into the Oath, and there's where our, well, my problem lies." he said with a nervous laugh. He rubbed the back of his head for a moment, then stood again. He paced a distance away, and returned. "When the human council finds out what I've done, it will mean certain war. It's our greatest law not to change another of a race without their consent, and I have just broken that law." he said, worry lining his tone. "There are two ways around this. You can continue and become a vampire like me, or I can take your life and spare you from that fate." he explained, returning to where he had crouched previously. "All I want to ask of you is to help me keep the old wars between our races from starting up again. I want to preserve the peace between our peoples." he posed the statement like a question.

Kalla was slightly shocked by what came out of the man's mouth, the vampire's mouth. Shocked to the point that she was reduced to staring at him and blinking slightly, with a confused look on her face. She was just trying to process it, and when the realisation that currently, she was actually dead, the shocked looked on her face slowly turned into something else. She looked at her own hands for a moment, and tried to feel for her own heartbeat with them, and found nothing.

She stopped her search for life, and looked back at the person who turned her into a vampire.

"Wait so, you attacked me to save your life, and then saved mine, but wars could happen because of what you did? ...Thanks for saving my life though."

Shain watched her, a look of near indifference on his face. It wasn't something he had meant to do, it was just his normal thing. "A war can be an adverse effect if you go to the leader of the humans and tell them I changed you without consent." he said with a sigh. "It's our greatest law. Not to bite a human without their permission." he restated, standing to stretch for a moment. "Yes. I attacked you out of pure instinct to survive, and yes. I used the blood oath to keep you from dying." he reiterated, watching her curiously. He figured she would be angry, though he was glad so far she didn't seem like it. Yet, it also merely seemed like she was still in shock of the idea. "What's your name?" he asked calmly, attempting a reassuring smile.

"Kalla, Kalla Devin. "

She responded to his question, letting the rest of what he said sink in once again. Though now she had a whole load of questions, mainly to do with being a vampire, and what she could do, and what she couldn't do, and what she would have to do now.

Though, the pressing matter of the mention of war was a little more at the forefront of Kalla's mind than anything else. She didn't want anyone to go to war, didn't like war in general. And if war was going to happen because of something she was a part of, she had a feeling she wouldn't feel right with herself.

"Wait, does anyone know about what you did? To me?"

Shain shook his head, "Nope. Just you and me know about this, and as long as you give your consent about the matter now, it won't be as damaging." he said, hopeful that her reaction meant she would go along with it. He stood, and approached her again, once again offering to help her up from the ground. "Though this means you can't return to your home. Not to continue living anyway. You will need to move to the colonies." he explained sheepishly. "I've got room at my place, if you like. I'll help you however I can. I'm responsible for you now." he added, remembering what the blood oath entailed until she became a full vampire.

Kalla gave herself a moment to think, before she decided to get up, and once again refusing the vampire's hand of help.

"I didn't have much back at home, a move of place may be good for me anyway. Though, now that I am a... vampire, and your in charge of me, your going to be subjected to a whole load of questions. Mainly for revenge for killing me in the first place, and because I have no clue about being a vampire. So, the first question I have, what's your name?"

Shain stepped back and let his hand once again fall to his side. "I'm Shain. Shain Shanks. Nice to meet you, Kalla." He said with a smile. He motioned for them to start walking toward the colonies. "I'll happily answer all the questions you have to ask to the best of my ability." He added lightly.

"Nice to meet you to, Shain."

Kalla gave him a nod, trying to collect all the questions she had in her head to ask Shain. Though she followed behind him as he walked, keeping up with him so that she could easily ask questions on a whim.

"Okay, my first question. The food situation, that's different right? Also, colonies, what are they like? Does everyone huddle together like bats or are we in some kind of spacious compound or?... Also me being a vampire, am I going to be wanting to count everything in my path or have other weird behavioural thing that isn't human, or is everything just a social construct and different things are polite and different thing are rude?Oh, and the sun, is that a problem?"

Kalla's mouth and thoughts were racing, thinking on all the things she didn't know about vampires and what is was like to be one, and getting good use out of the person who said they would answer them.

Shain laughed at some of her questions and shook his head. "To start. Yes, the food situation is a little different. You can still eat and drink like humans, though you don't need to. You will, however, need blood to keep up your strength. It's not like you need it everyday, but if you start feeling weak, it's a good idea." He explained, beginning with the first actual question she had asked. He paused and thought of how to answer the next one. "As for the colonies, they aren't much different from human cities. Each of us have our own homes." He explained, "well, that's the colony I live in. There are smaller colonies that merely live in giant apartment complexes." He added, shoving his hands into his pockets.

He smiled as he thought about an answer for the next question. "I could tell you yes to the next one, merely to see if you'd actually do it, but that would be mean. No. You won't have any weird compulsions. We aren't much different than humans except for the obvious reasons." He laughed, muttering about counting things. He then thought of the social rules, and nodded. "You could say our social norm is different, but that's merely because we are all individuals. Unless you had blood relations choose to go vampire as well as yourself, then your alone. There's no such thing as family. Not in the human sense." He continued, shrugging. "We have hierarchies. Me, being leader, at the top. Then there's the council of elders. Then the true elders. Then adults. Then younglings. Then the oath bound." He stated, naming off each level of social status. "And no, the sun isn't really a problem. We are sensitive to the light, but it won't hurt us or anything." He added with another shrug. He fell silent and awaited the next onslaught of questions.

"Where do I sit in the Hierarchy then? I'm going to guess a youngling, but since your the one turned me, that has merit right? Or are you always turning humans into vampires?"

Kalla was curious, she didn't want to do anything that would be offensive to any of the other vampires, now that she was one. But being turned from their leader may affect her, other than the whole looming war thing that was possible.

"Also, what kind of blood do we drink? Is it human? Do we directly get it from humans or does it come in bags? Or do we drink animal blood? Oh and, what am I going to do about my housing problem in the colony? I didn't live there before, so I don't have a place to stay now, or is there like a shelter or something for new guys looking for a place to stay?"

Shain shook his head, "You're an Oath Bound for now. You won't become a youngling until after you have learned all you can about our society. That's what I'm for. Since I'm the one who started the ritual, I must help you settle into your new life. Once I feel that you are ready to live as a vampire, I will release the Oath Ritual, and you will advance to a full vampire." he explained slowly, smiling. "No, I don't just go around turning humans. On a normal standard, a human is turned only after much counsel. We try to make sure their decision to join us is a well educated one." he answered lightly, glancing over at Kalla for a quick moment.

"You can basically drink any kind of blood you want. It all is determined by your taste. Each species tastes differently that the other." he said with a shrug, "I prefer the taste of humans, so I get boxes of excess from the blood banks. It's an expensive taste, but I manage." he added, then paused. "Sorry if that might have sounded offensive." he muttered, shaking his head. He never really had a way with words. "I have extra rooms in my place, if you want, for now. I've got far to much space for just me. As for later, you can either move into an apartment building, or we can see about adding another house to the colony. There are lots of options about living space." he chuckled.

"Oh great, I'm going to be a not-quite-yet vampire for possibly the entirety of life. I have a feeling that I'm never going to reach the step of knowing enough vampire stuff to become a youngling."

Kalla was having some fun at this point, trying to mix around her ratio of talking and asking questions. But it wasn't too far from the worries she did have, like how she was going to handle drinking blood or how the rest of the vampires were going to treat her, considering she wasn't 'a well educated decision' like how most vampires were turned.

"And I think I'll take up your offer of your place, I don't think I could handle being on my own straight away."

Shain chuckled, "Your still a vampire. You're just bound to me by the ritual. It's more or less to keep you safe until you learn our way of life. If I released you from the oath right now and you were to offend an elder, I wouldn't be able to stop them from hurting you or even killing you." He explained gently, lifting a hand to pat her on the shoulder. "Trust me, being an oath bound is far better than starting out a youngling. I'm still considered a youngling if we go by vampire ages." He laughed, and scratched the back of his head before shoving his hand back into his pocket. He liked this girl, she was interesting.

It had been some time since they had started walking, and Shain stopped within a clearing. "Let's rest a moment. We still have the rest of today and part of tomorrow before we reach my colony." He said, flopping to the ground. He wasn't tired, he usually was never tired, he just got bored of walking. "I wouldn't advise trying to be on your own until you have a better understanding of vampire ettiquite. The elders are offended easily." He laughed again.

"Don't worry, I'm not planning on doing anything till I know everything."

Kalla sat down on the ground with Shain, glad that she got the chance for a break. Though she was a little disheartened with how long it was going to take for them to get to the colony, it gave her a good long while to learn everything she could before she got to mingle with all the other vampires.

"So, what's it like at your place? If your the leader you must have a pretty cool place right?"

Shain grinned, "I'll admit it isn't the nicest, but yeah, it's pretty cool." he laughed. "I already said it was big. It technically has five stories. One is a basement, and the other four are above ground." he added, laying back on the cool ground. He folded his hands behind his head and stared up at the sky. "The top floor is mine. It's a studio layout, so I have it all to myself. The next floor down is all bedrooms, which each have their own bathrooms. Then below that is the normal kitchen, dining room, living room. All that stuff. The ground floor is more extravagant. It's where I entertain the elders when they come to visit, or hold council meetings." he explained, "The basement is just storage." he finished, glancing over at Kalla.

Kalla couldn't help her mouth being slightly open, and her eyes wide. Though when she realised it she blinked and closed her mouth, then acted like that didn't happen. But she was truly shocked, Shain lived in a Mansion, or at least a modern-ish one if the top floor was a studio layout. Or maybe he lived in a hotel kind of place, or something like an apartment building.

"Wow, that sounds amazing."

"It's just where they put who ever is the current leader. If I die, or step down, then I will have to move. Who ever replaces me will get the house." he said with a shrug. "So, it's hard to look at it as amazing. It's just unnecessarily large." he laughed. He fell silent, waiting to see if she had any more questions.

"Still pretty amazing, though I could definitely see how hard it would be to clean. That would be a pain."

Kalla was making fun, though she also meant it, she didn't mind cleaning when she was living on her own but it only happened once a week because it was such a chore.

"Do you live on your own? Wouldn't someone with your status have like a whole family of people helping you out around the house?"

Shain shrugged, "If I had family. Like I said, Vampires don't really do family. We are a community of misfits. Some have partners, and really close friends, but that's the extent of family in our world. So, I'm on my own. Didn't have family when I was still human, and still don't now that I'm a vampire." he said indifferently. He smiled at the idea of cleaning the large mansion is stayed in, "There are some younglings that come and clean the houses for the older vampires, but it's all for status upgrades." he explained as he sat up, putting his hands down in his lap.

"Wow, I'll definitely help out cleaning then if you only have younglings doing it for you. A 5 story place would collect so much dirt and dust."

Kalla kept her mood light, even though she was a little bsushed off by Shain's small rant about families in the vampire world. Kalla had always been on the kinder side of the scale on humanity, so while she was a loner in her small place she still thought about the old lady who lived across from her, or the man who lived across the hall who didn't know how to use his landline, and she always helped them out.

Shain looked at Kalla, and smiled. "What about you? What was your life like before I went a messed it up?" he asked curiously.

((sorry about that one liner... I'm busily cleaning my house and didn't have time to think of a better response...))
