Blind Date Blues

Double

Junior Member
The bell rings and everyone settles in. Basic Entomology is a breadth class for all the Humanities majors, so it's neither difficult nor particularly interesting, depending on your point of view. Professor Williams was a kind fellow, and ridiculously overqualified to teach the class, given his level of expertise, but he loved sharing his favorite subject with laypersons.

Nick Sabin sat near the front. He was a Liberal Arts major, aiming at becoming a teacher, but he found insects fascinating all the same. It helped that Professor Williams was passionate and kinda funny too.

Nick settled in when he noticed a late comer open the door.

"Ah jeez," he thought, "here she is again."

Alexandria heard the bell as she finished up her scene. Her drama professor would not let her or the class go till it was finished. she sighed and put her black raven hair behind her ear as she ran for her next class. she apologized in her thick Irish accent. She took her seat next to Nick as it was the only seat open. She glanced over at Nick with almost a look of disdain, she hated coming to this class with him. he always made stupid remarks and she felt like she had more brains then him.

she pulled out her book and got out her notes, she wrote quickly in a neat cursive and caught up to what she missed. she was able to finally jump into the discussion. She just ignored Nick next to her and used her hair as a curtain, to block her even looking in his direction. then the teacher gave them an assignment. he paired all the students up. she dropped her mouth when he paired her up with Nick"Are you sure sir? nothing against the Lad, but wouldn't it be better to pair us with someone else." she asked in her heavy Irish accent. the teacher shook his head and she sat with a huff. she wasnt do anything with him tonight. she had some blind date to go on that her friends had set up.

"Nothing against me, huh?" Nick asked, shaking his head. "You've got a funny way of saying things right in front of a person, you know?" He looked around, feeling vaguely helpless. Here he was, locked into an assignment with a pushy know-it-all. Even if she was a knockout...

"Listen, let's just cut it up into two parts amd work separately. We'll put it together and make like we were side by side the whole way, Ok?" He looked at her with mute appeal, hoping to end this painlessly. In a few hours he'd be on a date with a hot girl and he could forget this Irish ice queen.

Alexandria gave him and almost cold look. she sighed," no will work it together. I don't want to get a bad grade, because you wanted to work on your own." she said." will start tomorrow." she said with frown on her lips." I rather be brutally honest then be a back stabber" she said to his earlier comment. She sighed and wrote down there assignment and circled it. She flipped her hair and worked on her outline for what had to be done. she made two copies and gave him one." come with some research done, don't just party like a frat boy. aye?" she said and shook her head.

"Uh huh, yeah right. For your information, MA'AM, I don't even like to party, drinking is bad for you. And frat boys are even worse for you. And since we're being honest, why do you get to make the outline? I'm smart! I am perfectly capable of...."

Nick looked down amd scanned the outline. Dang it, it was actually pretty good....

"Of... doing my share of the research," he mumbled, glaring at Alexandria's face. Bossy, uppity, and too smart for her own good. This project should go GREAT, Nick thought to himself.

Alexandria rolled her eye's"That sir is why I made it. it is more organized and legible." She was the take control kind of girl and left nothing to chance. some saw her as stuck up and bossy, maybe even to smart for her own good. She just saw it as she had a leg up on everyone else. Alexandria had been a head in Ireland so this came easy to her. she wrote down notes from there text book and started planning out her notes. she made little marks to remind herself too look it up. Alexandria was very hard headed and free willed. She was wild soul that couldn't be contained or so her father had told her back in Ireland. Here it was winter time. all she wore was a long sleeve shirt while everyone wore heavy coats. this was nothing compared to Ireland, cold and wet most of the time.

Nick arched his eyebrow at her. "Legible, eh?" Oh dang, she'd seen his notes! Nick was very smart himself, with a flair for languages, math and teaching, but his handwriting has always been atrocious. His friendly, open nature made him easy to work with, generally, but his playfulness did occasionally get him negative attention. He opened his own text book to examine the work and started to jot things down, acutely aware of his penmanship while Alexandria was so close.

"Hmph," he thought, "Yeah, so what my writing is messy? I could be all 'I'm organized, feh!' Like someone..."

Just a little longer....

( I got Tapa back so happy )

Alexandria sighed and ignored him as she wrote. Her hand writing was quick and small, but legible. Alexandria sighed as he started talking again. She looked at him and pursed her lips." Not messy just look at my hand writing and yours."she said and put her notes next to his."I am organized, nothing wrong with that."she said. She looked at her phone with a slight sigh and texted her father back.

"Hm, expecting an important message? Got a big date lined up? Or maybe some appointment to get your icy heart thawed? How are you not cold? You're wearing, like, an undershirt."

Nick didn't know why he was being harsh, maybe it was that he was intimidated, maybe it was her looks or imperious attitude. All he knew was this Irish girl was poking his nerves and he wasn't about that at all.

He went back to reading about insect behavior. This would be a lot easier if one of them was an invertebrate.

Alexandria rolled her eyes and packed up her stuff."for your information it was my father. Not that you need to know it isn't your business. A date yes tonight and I don't need your approval or disapproval, because it isn't you. "She snapped and stood up. She wasn't aware of how wrong she was." Also this Icy heart as you so call it is who I am.I am not cold because Irleand is colder then here." She said and walked out handing her part of the assignment to the teacher."Well done your late to class, but did the work neatly and complete. Your a very bright woman Alexandria. "He said. " class this is how an out line should look organized and neat. Now don't cut corners people. "He said and handed back her note book." Free to go."she nodded and walked away. She shook her head and grabbed her phone as it went off.

"Damn," Nick thought to himself. Done first, kudos from the teacher, AND she told him off in front of the whole class. That girl was dangerous, there was no doubt. "Thank goodness I'm gonna meet a cool girl tonight." He kept working, silently cursing his luck. He knew smart girls that were nice, and cute girls that were nice, but Alexandria was a hard edged woman, no doubt.

Eventually he finished fleshing out his half of the outline and left class. The air was crisp, leaves skittered along the ground, and the sun was sinking towards the horizon. It was hard to stay mad on a beautiful fall day like this. "All I have to do is get through one or two study sessions and I'm done with her," he thought. "And tonight, I'm going on a date! For the first time in weeks!'

Alexandria sighed as she talked on the phone. Nick had annoyed her and she got praise, but her mind was on tonight's date. She went back to her apartment and went to get ready for the date tonight. Alexandria went to bed and decided to take a nap.

Alexandria went to get up and get ready. She curled her hair, and did her make up. Her friends picked her up and took her to where she was supposed go meet her blind date. She was in a black dress and black heals. Alexandria was drinking and laughing with her friends as she waited on her date. Her back was to the door, so her face was hidden from sight.

Nick took his time getting ready. He wasn't really a messy guy, he was just casual. He tried to put that Irish ice queen out of his mind and remind himself that tonight, he was gonna meet and hang out with a beautiful, smart woman, guaranteed to like him.

He got clean, shaved, even used some product in his hair to keep it tame. He put on his nicest slacks and a black button down and a pair of great shoes. He was set. When he got to the resaurant, he could see his friends friend and waved her down, heading over to meet his date.

"Wow, look at those gorgeous curls..." he thought.

Alexandria sat and noticed her friends waving him over. She breathed in this was the moment of truth. As he walked over Alexandria's Jaw almost dropped. She saw Nick and her gaze drifted over him. She went to stand and her friends grabbed her wrist."eh we know about you two in class.,yes but do you two actually know each other. Put aside your ego's. Sit and get to know each other" they say. Alexandria sat and sighed. She looked at Nick and nods."okay."she said

Nick felt like his head was going to pop right off his body. "Her?!" he thought. "Why her?" Of all the stupid, rotten luck. Although.... she did look stunning tonight. What could the harm be?

"Alright, I'll give it a shot, too." He ordered a drink and took a moment to think. Well, it was best to treat this like a date. Women love compliments.

"Your outline was excellent, and your handwriting is exquisite," he blurted out, and immediately blushed.

"Way to go, Casanova," he thought to himself.

Alexandria smiles at his slight out burst. She held back a laugh."Thank you. Your hand writing isn't bad."Alexandria said and sighed. "So tell me about your self."She said and took a drink of her drink. She did her best to be polite to him.

Nick exhaled slowly and let his eyes bulge dramatically.

"Well, I'm from California and came out east for school. I've always been good at math, and I could speak Spanish and French fluently by the time I was 16. Mom, dad, brother, pretty standard American family unit. I guess I can be a bit... lighthearted at times, but I like to smile whenever I can. You"

Alexandria smiles and nods."interesting, Well from Ireland. I actually lived in Dublin for a time, before I moved to Belfast. With my family. My dad and mom. I know 4 languages French, English, Gaelic, and German. Requirement in Ireland. I been here six months as you know."She said. She smiled. "I am a farm girl with brains very unusual. To find "She said.

Nick tried to think if he'd seen Alexandria smile before, but was sure he'd remember if he had, because it was pretty amazing. Whatever reasons had caused him to dislike her were becoming more difficult to recall as they talked. Aside from being interesting and intelligent, she was stone cold gorgeous. How had he never noticed? Was he that put off by her attitude before? Was he that threatened by her brains?

They got a table and ordered food, and Nick asked her about growing up in Ireland.

Alexandria was actually enjoying .She sighed as they got a table."oh man Ireland growing up there. Just depends on where you grew up. Dublin is full of cheats, chances, and back stabbing snakes. Belfast is bo better." Alexandria said."pretty though, very cold and grey often."She said. " Here pictures. "She pulled out her phone and shows them to him. Alexandria actually thought him interesting. He was good looking and actually nice when he wasn't being a complete and utter ass.

"Hm, now I see why you haven't worn a sweater yet, it must feel like summer here! My goodness, it's beautiful... I see what they mean about 50 shades of green! And the lakes, they're as blue as your ey... Um, I mean, they are uh.. very blue..."

What was going on? Was Nick getting all puppy love for Alexandria? Well, he thought, she is beautiful, she's very smart, and that accent was pretty tasty...

She smiled and nods."exactly not cold enough here for me to wear a coat."She said.Alexandria nods as he admired her pictures. "Yeah I miss it there a lot. Everything is very green and yes the lakes are very blue."She said with a smile. She blushed at his almost compliment. It was close enough. She sighed. "So what of this California and your family? Dont you miss them and the weather."She asked. She watched him with none judgmental eyes. Her cold demeanor fading away.

Nick smiled, maybe a little sadly, his gentle hazel eyes focusing on the middle distance. "Yeah, I miss my family sometimes, especially on holidays. We were all close and I've never been away this long. But I had a pretty unique opportunity out here, and they all supported me wholeheartedly, so I went for it." He could remember the tearful send off at the airport. "We all still talk and Skype, but you know... it's not quite the same. And the weather! Where I'm from, there are hardly clouds at all! It's rarely under 70 degrees and the sun is your best friend." He smiled warmly at her, getting lost for a moment in those blue, blue eyes....

Alexandria smiles and nods."yeah I know that feeling, I mean why don't you go back for the holidays. You live in the other side of the country. Not the other side of the world."She said."yeah unique opportunity I knows it is why I am here." She said"wow 70 degrees and always sunny. Definitely wouldn't be this pale if it were like that in Ireland."Alexandria said and looked down feeling her cheeks blush.

"I wouldn't want you any less pale..." Nick said dreamily and then blushed himself. What the heck? He felt like a schoolboy with a crush at this point. Damn. Those curls were a distraction too, and he could no longer remember not liking her at any point.

"Uh, oh, well airfare is just a little steep, so I get Christmas and that's all." His palms felt a little sweaty. Maybe he was just sick? That would be a good excuse for the trembly feeling in his stomach.
