Sleipnir

The Eight-Legged Norse Horse
This is a space for out of character discussions including character talk, chatting, speculation, and questions about whatever you need to ask questions about!

Hey! Quick question: do you prefer more realistic or drawn images when it comes to character sheets? Also, do you have a specific character in mind for the victim? I'd love to have my characters be friends that were on a holiday trip with the victim until he/she disappeared...?

Hey! I have no preference on real vs drawn -- whatever gets closest to the image of the person you're picturing. That's kinda part of why I posted art I did of Morgan, one of the NPCs in game. The type of picture has no impact to me!
As for the victim at the campground, I haven't really established anything about them. Feel free to include that detail if you'd like! I can provide them a name and face if you'd like, but I'm also down to let you do that, since they're part of a string of disappearances!

may I have two cs?
or one only?

>Can I make a disappeared person's cs as well?
Right now with as few people as I have, I don't mind people having second characters if they want them. As far as disappeared people, I'd be down to have additional info about lost people that you can post in your character sheet, but I don't know that they need sheets of their own.

Yippie, second character coming right up!

I was planning on having a friend or sibling of my character go missing while ghost hunting at the campground and that's the reason my character joins the investigation but I'm not sure if that type of idea has already been claimed

alternatively, I could make twins and one twin is a paranormal fanatic that drags the other twin along to investigate

Would you be able to post some basic info for me to base my characters' involvement in the investigation around? So far all I've mentioned is that they met the lost person in college and have been friends since

I assume the ♥️ on my post was a go-ahead to post a character sheet? Sorry, I'm pretty new to roleplaying in a more structured setting like this. Are we required to include character images?

Missing persons is a very viable reason for your character to join up... whether the officials want them to or not! It's totally acceptable for locals or tourists whose friends/family are missing to get involved and stuck in the investigation if you want. Ghost hunting is an entirely fair reason, and there are a number of people who have gone missing. At the moment no one has a direct connection to the most recent one, from the campground, but I think Solaris sounded like they were going to be connected to them? Regardless, we can design a few of the victims for characters to be connected to. National Forests are big, and even your missing person wasn't investigating the campground, they could have gone missing investigating a haunted fire tower, old cabin, or other site, too.

You're good, yeah! I shouldn't have too many folks in-game, I just hadn't quite gotten around to typing something up yet! Welcome, glad to have you! You don't necessarily have to have a character image. Lots of people do, and some games do ask for one as a requirement, but a written description is plenty for me!

So, there has been a number of people -- tourists and locals alike -- going missing in the forests around Canaan Valley for the past year or so. Exactly how long this is happening is fairly vague, possibly because no one knows precisely when it started. In this time, there have been reports from rangers that strange things have appeared on trail cameras that they can't quite make sense of, hikers, backpackers, and campers have reported otherworldly sounds and sightings, and on occasion, trails of blood have been found. Something sinister is happening, and it's clear to anyone who's looking closely at what's going on, but not everyone is.

In this time, local law enforcement has been "looking into it," and certainly, there's probably a few folks there who really do want to get to the bottom of the situation. There's definitely some bigwigs there who have a greater interest in keeping the ski resorts and elected officials of the area happy... and most of those elected officials are also involved with the ski resorts. Missing people and grisly evidence in the woods you're skiing through is bad for business, so there's a lot of pressure from those officials to keep the situation as quiet as possible. That's what prompted the Forest Service to put together an investigation of their own, along with help from the FBI, since it would be somewhat difficult to keep missing people and possible murder quiet enough to keep it away from them. As a note, the Forest Service does lots of things -- trail upkeep, watching for and responding to forest fires, trip planning, research and forest health, even public education programs. They just happen to also have jurisdiction to do law enforcement on forest land, so they're trying to figure this out.

So there are probably several people missing right now, and the most recent was in a fairly popular campground called Blackwater Campground. After dark, in a secluded campsite off in a forested corner of the campground, something happened. There was screaming -- both human and something inhuman -- and immediately, the rangers and some of the campers in the area responded to go see what was happening and try to help. It was around 11:00 at night, during a night sky program, and even with other people around and jumping into action, the victim was gone before anyone could get to them. They were tent camping, and the tent was torn, with quite a few signs of struggle, along with some evidence of blood -- but in this case, not enough to appear fatal.

I hadn't come up with any particular information about the victim just yet, but can definitely do that! This could've been a fall break trip to celebrate the end of college, for example, and they could've either been from a local college or traveling for an exciting outdoors trip. Since I said out loud from the get-go that I don't plan for this to be a normal, human situation, I feel safe saying they probably don't have any enemies with any reason to kill them. I'm thinking around 25 years old, freshly graduated, possibly from a pretty well-off family to be hanging out and vacationing in an expensive ski town. If you want, I can come up with more info about them?

I'm glad to see some excitement about this, by the way! I really didn't know if anyone would be interested in this sort of genre or theme. I look forward to seeing how this goes!

Oooo lore dump. Sounds good to me! I'd love some additional info to better flesh out my characters' relationship with the missing person and their motivations for being involved with the case (guilt that they weren't with their friend when they disappeared/weren't able to stop the incident, possibly)

Yes yes. Sorry. I do plan on coming back to this, but with recent events I've not been available. I'll come back to this and answer these questions here in the next day or so, promise!!

So:

The season will be early fall, with the skiing season just barely starting with some early snow.

As for the missing person…
Hattie Baker is missing. She was in her last year of college studying wildlife biology, and came out to camp and get a feel for the location because she planned on applying for internships with the Forest Service once she graduates. Blackwater was one of many places she was considering as an option for internship, of course.
She loves hiking, of course, and was always considered fairly athletic. She enjoyed recreational volleyball, but didn’t play competitively in college. Most of her time was devoted to study, and she didn’t frequently indulge in night life — camping and having a couple drinks with good friends was always Hattie’s idea of “cutting loose.” She’s always been an attentive college student, and has always taken her career path seriously.
