Realistic or Modern BLACKWATER CAMPGROUND [Character Sheets]

Sleipnir

The Eight-Legged Norse Horse
What's going on at Blackwater Falls?
Rumor has it Canaan Valley has some dark secrets hidden in it. It's not in the newspaper, and the local ski resorts don't want you to know, but there are some creepy tales of disappearances and strange noises coming out of the woods circulating around the campfires in every campground across the forest. People have been disappearing. Stay too long, and you'll hear some stories. Every now and then, you might hear tell of a missing neighbor, uncle, sibling. No one knows where they're going. The police insist they're looking into it, but no news is coming out, no one's talking about it in an official way -- just empty promises to locals that "they're looking into it." It leaves room for the imagination to take flight... No bodies have been found, and no one knows for sure what's going on, but more and more theories are emerging, and rumors are spreading that whatever this is, it's supernatural in nature. A ghost stalking the hills, exacting revenge? Aliens? Mothman itself? Or something else?

The local police appear to be doing very little about these strange disappearances, and coverage has been nearly nonexistent. Most tourists remain ignorant to the situation unfolding in this little West Virginia town. The dynamic changed, though, when there was an incident at Blackwater Campground -- one of the more popular spots in the Blackwater Falls Forest. There was screaming, and when visitors and rangers investigated the site, they found blood, and evidence that someone had been dragged away... but they lost the trail in the gullies and mountains of the rugged forest around the campground. That incident raised quite a ruckus.

Despite significant pressure from the Forest Service, local law enforcement still refused to do anything. So they decided they'd handle it themselves. The Forest Service appointed several of their staff to investigating the disappearances and potential murder scenes. Their investigation immediately came to the attention of the FBI, who decided to send a couple agents themselves to assist. Both agencies are working hard to keep this investigation under wraps. Whether or not they'll succeed in keeping a couple nosey tourists or locals out of it is yet to be seen. Blackwater Campground is closed down, and the team will be dispatched to begin their investigation shortly. Their goal: Figure out what happened, what's responsible, and how to stop these horrifying disappearances.

Character Creation / Expectations and Rules
  • There is no requirement for what exactly a character's background should be: As long as their sheet justifies their involvement with the investigation, they are an acceptable character concept, whether that makes them a ranger, FBI agent, unlucky witness who just can't leave it alone, nosy local, or what. Anything works.
  • All characters are expected to be humans.
  • Characters can be armed, but this game is going to be more mystery than action.
  • I will have NPCs, and sharing one as an example (who will probably be one of the more common ones to see), but will not be having a designated PC.
  • I don't plan on being insanely picky, but will respond accordingly if characters don't feel compatible
  • Characters should fit a spooky/horror setting
  • I am not picky on character sheets. One is included here if you don't have a specific one you want to use!
  • Tone expectations are at least mostly-serious/atmospheric horror
  • Behavior expectations are pretty standard: Be respectful, follow all RPN guidelines

usfsgirl.png
Name: Morgan McCoy
Age: 26
Gender: Woman (She/her)
Sexuality: (Optional) Bisexual

Appearance:
Morgan is a somewhat imposing woman -- she's tall, at 5'9", with broad shoulders, a strong frame, and a generally not-very-petite look. She's tan from years of forest service work, unfreckled, and sometimes has sunburn across her face and shoulders. Her hair is somewhat messy, long, and black, cut into a rough wolfcut. Usually, she keeps it kept up in a ponytail, and it's wavy when it's down. It hangs around her face and over her green eyes. She usually wears tank tops and cargo pants when she's hiking or doing backcountry and trail work, but can be found in the visitor center in a traditional uniform.

Personality: Morgan is straight-forward, curious, and extremely adventurous. She's not the sort of woman who knows how to stay out of trouble and can often come off as fearless when you first meet her. She's a woman with incredible enthusiasm for her work, a sarcastic sense of humor, and overall, really enjoys being outdoors -- hence why she joined the Forest Service in the first place. She's proud of her work here, and has a hard time staying out of any weirdness which involves her place of work on account of how involved with weird things she tends to be. Morgan's stubborn, determined, and comes off as a bit of a tomboy. She's always doing something in the Blackwater Forest.
Special talents/skills:

  • Physically pretty strong
  • Morgan boulders and rock climbs
  • An inside contact who works with the Forest Service
  • Very knowledgeable about local trails and wildlife

Backstory: Morgan is a Forest Ranger, and works at the local ranger station present near Blackwater Campground. She was one of the rangers on-site when rangers were called, as she was doing an evening program. Prior to that, Morgan started her season in the spring, and has been exploring the local public lands ever since. She was born and raised in Minnesota, and has experienced strange things and mysteries like these since then.
While Morgan would love to be a little more involved with the Blackwater Falls investigation, and it's highly likely that she's snooping around on her own, but Morgan is pretty busy with trail patrol, backcountry work, programs, visitor center duties, and even keeping an eye on trail cams from the fire tower. With some of her coworkers tied up in the investigation, she doesn't have much free time -- but she sure would be happy to get involved.

Name: Warren Mills
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Demi

Appearance:
Warren stands at about 6'2", tall and lean you'd never expect this man to be quite as strong as he is. He has short, blonde hair that's almost never out of place and green eyes, he always seems to be grimacing about something. Warren suffers from terminal RBF. There isn't much that's especially unique about him but he does have tattoos on both arms of pine tree branches

Warren wears an old Carhartt jacket that's seen better days and under that he usually wears a dark colored button up or a flannel.

Personality:
Warren is observant and highly skeptical, though he's not a denier of the supernatural he needs to see it himself and collect evidence before he makes any assumptions. His training with the FBI and his own personal studies have given him an eye for solving mysteries and for picking out behavior patterns.

He's also something of a shut in who struggles to socialize with other people, surprisingly. He can pick apart a serial killer or an arsonist and yet he is completely hopeless when it comes to making friends. Warren can come off as mean and uncaring at times because of it.

Special talents/skills:
Hunter
Warren grew up in Canaan valley, he learned to hunt and track elk and deer at a young age. Later on in life he learned to hunt much bigger game. Warren consults on cold cases and cases that are giving local police a headache, he has a knack for seeing things that no one else would, making the connections that other people wouldn't have.

Weapons training
Self explanatory, gun

Martial combat
Warren is trained in hand to hand combat, boxing specifically.

Backstory:
Warren grew up in Canaan Valley with his brothers, his mother was a housewife, and his father worked for a construction company. Appalachia was his backyard and those mountains raised him more than his parents ever really did. It's where he learned to hunt and trap, where he lost his brother and learned that he shouldn't deny the supernatural until he's seen it.

He lost his brother, Todd, when he was sixteen. Warren was always socially isolated, seen as the weird kid because he struggled to understand social cues and had mannerisms that other people saw as strange. Todd was something of a guardian, he made sure Warren wasn't entirely cut off from everyone. That was his best friend.
Warren still remembers the golden glow of the sunset, and the gently rippling waves of the lake. Todd sent him back to his truck and Warren was halfway there when he heard the gunshot.

Name: Krystal (Krys) Lockridge
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Closeted Lesbian

Appearance:
image0.jpeg0B5DDBDF-9FB1-4887-953B-772AE9D062A0.jpeg
She's about 5' 7", Often sun-tanned with freckles on her cheeks and shoulders that disappear in the winter, her hair color and aesthetic are often changing, ranging from soft-goth to light academia to prep-school babe. Though she has naturally strawberry-blonde hair it's almost never actually that color. She usually wears it mid-back length and well-styled.

Personality:
Krys is very bright and very sweet, typically.

Skills/talents:
Krys is a very talented gymnast, making her strength, balance, and flexibility all very impressive.
She’s good with people and has a a high capacity for empathy and understanding.

Backstory:
Krystal Lockridge grew up as the only daughter of a New York senator. She spent her summers in the Hamptons and had pretty much her whole childhood planned out for her. She has three older brothers- politicians and/or lawyers, mostly, and was often kind of left out. She was pampered, but most of the attention she got as a kid was performance based. Her mom introduced her to the idea of witchcraft and as the "white girl witch" aesthetic started trending on instagram Krys really found herself in that space.

She decided to travel the states after finishing her undergraduate degrees in dance and sociology at Columbia University, due to a really bad breakup with her best friend (girlfriend) from high school. She records her experiences for her socials - or tries to, anyway.

Extra Details:
Her deep interest in true crime has lead her to volunteer to help out in any way she can for this case while her family enjoys their vacation nearby.

Name: Special Agent Ellanora Mallory
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual

Appearance:

1730062675406.png
Ellanora, a slender and athletically built woman, stands at 5'9. Her hair is naturally long and wavy, yet due to the nature of her work she would frequently tie it up in a loose ponytail. Her eyes are sharp sapphires, bright in color but dull in expressiveness. Ellanora's skin tone is very pale and fair, with tones of red easily visible across her features. Casual attire is almost never worn by Ellanora, and you will usually find her donning a suit or gear oriented to the tasks ahead.

Personality: Agent Mallory is meticulous, neutral, and overly-critical. With her life so intertwined with her work, Ellanora is generally in control of her emotions and direct with her thoughts. Her focus is almost always on achieving the job given to her, and is not one to accept bullshit from people trying to hinder her handle on a situation. At moments, she may be too analytical, a fault that she even acknowledges from time to time.
Special talents/skills: Weapons Training, Forensics, Bilingual

Backstory: Ellanora Mallory grew up in a military family. Her father, a member of the United States Navy, was frequently moved around the world to different bases, his wife and daughter coming with. Granted, Ellanora enjoyed the travel. She enjoyed seeing new things and exploring the world, albeit she never got true opportunities to establish herself anywhere. However, she opted to return to the United States to attend college, going and settling down in Richmond, Virginia. After graduating, she joined the police force for a few years, working her way up until she was able to apply (and successfully) join the FBI. Since then, her days are spent doing a variety of things; from surveillance to executing warrants to being present in court. Yet, that was until Ellanora was dispatched to an investigation unlike any other she had done before. One located in a the tiny town that was Canaan Valley, West Virginia.

Extra Details:

Name: Peter Krawcheck
Age: 35
Gender: (cis) male (he/him)
Sexuality: gay

Appearance:
Peter is 5’11” with a somewhat stocky build. He is white and has brown eyes and short brown hair that is parted on the left and has premature gray streaks. He has both laughter and worry lines on his face and a largish nose. Usually clean-shaven, he has accumulated stubble while camping.
(Outfit and maybe image TBD)

Personality:
Peter puts up a jolly facade on the outside but is deeply insecure and feels lost. Most people find him very likable but he has difficulty opening up enough to have had many deep friendships or relationships. This stems from his family making him feel like he was never good enough as a child. He doesn’t have a whole lot going on in his life outside of work. He is somewhat geeky and enjoys buddy cop movies, French cuisine, and yacht rock. He dislikes reptiles.

Special talents/skills:
-Eidetic memory: Peter can call up in his mind a near-perfect recreation of any scene that strikes him enough—which is not always the same as any scene that he chooses. He can’t forget a single detail he perceived at the horrible crime scene, no matter how much he wants to. At least this might come in handy…
-People skills: Peter may not excel at making real friendships but he has a charming demeanor and a knack for getting acquaintances to like him. Sometimes the line may blur into manipulation…
-Math: Not that it’ll like likely do him much good in the spooky woods, but, hey, he is a CPA so that’s a skill he has, might as well mention it.

Backstory:
Peter was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, an only child of a middle-class family. His father tried to impose very strict views of masculinity on him and his mother constantly pressured him for success. Some of the only happy times in his childhood were camping trips with his father, although they simultaneously made him feel the most inadequate.
He studied business administration in college and became an accountant, landing work with the large Geist corporation. He relocated for work several times and eventually found himself in Los Angeles, California, where he lived most of his adult life. After he left his father remarried and had a daughter.
Three months ago he got the call—his father was dying. Cancer; they hadn’t caught it soon enough. He flew home immediately and stayed at his father’s house until the end. His father’s resentment of him for not living up to his standards had only grown since Peter left him behind, and he kept saying stuff like “Facebook says you’re a ‘beta male.’”
After his father’s death Peter felt an intense desire to prove himself, although he didn’t know at what. Additionally, his boss had become angry at him over his months of absence and he was afraid to see what consequences he would be returning to at work. He returned to one of the campgrounds that he thought he remembered staying at in his youth—Blackwater, was it? He was awoken in the middle of the night by awful noises and when he went to see what happened he encountered the scene of the disappearance. He knew that if he didn’t know the cause of the images burned into his brain he would never be able to move past them, and that if he simply fled the crisis he would always feel disappointed in himself. Fueled by this and a certain lack of concern for his own safety and future, he decided to stay and investigate.
