Being mean to your OC

I rather dislike referring this as being "mean" to your character. Real life is full of twists and turns and hardships. It's not a lot of fun having someone never have problems, get hurt, or be sick.

The character I play the most right now is an alcoholic. It would be unrealistic if she didn't run into problems while drinking, have resulting health issues, etc.

The problem comes in, IMHO, when your character is nothing but drama. No problem solving, no resolutions... That becomes annoying for other players. For example, there are a couple well known characters in one of my RPs that are constantly getting beat up by unknown men... so constantly needing to be saved/helped/healed. Don't do that.

I agree. It gets annoying when it's all stereotypes and cliche bullshit. I personally believe I play characters with those types of problems correctly, but I’ve never had anyone actually “rate” how I do so.

As to give a reason for why I do this, it's simple. My life is excruciatingly mundane and so to make up for that, I love giving my characters things to deal with.

It might not truly be counted as being mean to my OC, though I do find a great joy in roleplaying mindless people and found myself designing most of my recent OCs as people of very low intelligence, just to test them on everyday situations.

Yeah, definitely. I literally just called my OC heroine dumb, haha. It depends what I wanna achieve though, for sure.

Fft, how sweet.

I just figured, it's quite boring when one's protagonists know how to tackle certain circumstances or solve mundane issues using a fair common sense.

I don't understand when people don't give their characters hardships. Life isn't sunshine and happiness all the time. Internal conflicts, rough situations, and the like come up constantly in real life.

I don't intentionally give my character a hard time all the time, but some hardships are bound to happen.

What? I don't understand why you responded that way to what I said.
Well...... I just wanted to hear how others gave hardship to their OCs..... Now I kinda feel stupid now.....

I understand what you meant. Just explaining that life can't always be predictive.

Oh, no. I wasn't saying anything against your original post. It was more a comment on how I don't understand when people don't do that. I've actually met people who have characters with no hardships whatsoever. Nothing wrong with them. Nothing ever bad happened to them. No fights with friends. No conflicts with parents. No internal struggles. I don't get it at all.

I'm sorry if I upset you somehow. I didn't intend to.

I feel like in the minority with decent well adjusted characters. Most have no real internal conflict or tragic backstories.

Granted I usually play them against people that are overly tragic with all kinds of interpersonal or psychological issues. This is because it helps move the story forward and fills an oft oveloped archetype.

After all usually the roleplay itself has sufficient moments for character growth as well as working with people who are so damaged. If done correctly o think it provides its own internal conflict as these happy dependable characters have their views of the world altered with by a bad experience or dealing with people who likewise have had terrible things happen to them

In short what happens when characters fall? When they realize this happy bubble of a world they live u hides some nasty truths.

I don't mean that you said something against me, I just feel stupid for asking the question as I see that it's more of a basic.....

Sometimes, when I feel like it, I make a super awesome, cute looking character with a cheerful personality and nice things...

...and then I take away everything they love...

Am I a bad person?

Well, maybe it isn't that we are abusing and bullying our character. Perhaps what we are doing is giving them an obstacle, some issue which they ought to overcome.

Actually I'd enjoy doing that stuff if I wrote books. I'd make the character very adorable and let him/her have hundreds of fans.... And suddenly painful death.

Well, I changed a lot since the beginning of this post, didn't I?

Hmmmm. Nice.

A character of mine always loses his jobs and his friends, he is now totally alone with no job and barely enough money to buy food and pay his rent. But I love him, I promise.

And, yes, of course, I killed several of my characters. One of them was beaten to death by another of my characters.

But I usually do not try to mistreat them.
