Daniel shoved the door in and almost immediately found himself on the receiving end of a face full of fire. He flailed backwards and fell on the ground, narrowly avoiding a serious burn, then rolled to the side. The smoke alarm went off at once, the shrill sound flooding the entire floor. It would be only a matter of seconds before nosy neighbors started to peer outside and the whole building would be evacuated. From inside their apartment there came coughing and gagging sounds.
"Martin! You idiot! You set off the smoke detectors!"
"Nevermind that, they're here! Get them!"
Daniel couldn't tell how many people were in the apartment through the now-billowing smoke, but he was willing to bet there were more than two.
