Countless centuries ago, the world was ruled by the Elders. It was this race that first developed the use of Magic, and it was they who mastered it in all forms. They created a vast Realm, filled with architectural wonders not seen since. As the Elders advanced, they decided they no longer needed to do all the work themselves. Using their immense magical powers, the Elders created the first of the Lesser Races, the acnestrors of the Vampires. Gifted in magic in their own right, the Vampires served as the trusted servants of the Elders, and when the next Lesser Races were created, as their Overseers. Centuries passed under this new system. Countless Lesser Races were created one at a time by the Elders to fit every role they needed. Life for the Lesser Races was far from good, and death was almost a certanity with every passing day. It wasn't until the Human species was created, that the first signs of resistance began to spring up. Humans proved to be a failure of an experiment, too unruly to control, and too aggressive to cow into submission. The Elders sent the Vampires to wipe out Humanity, though this too failed. For the first time in their history, Vampires felt compassion and remorse for a Lesser Race. This small faction looked upon what they had done to the other races, and they knew true regret. The Vampire faction, rather than exterminate the Humans as ordered, instead taught them Magic, and gave them the means to defend themselves properly. When the time was right, the Humans and Vampire faction rose up against the Elders.

The Rebellion as it came to be known was the first true conflict the world had ever seen. Countless lives were lost, and entire species, those who rose up and joined Humanity and the Vampire faction, were wiped out in the conflict. The Elders and their loyal Vampires slaughtered countless Lesser Race warriors, but the Elders own arrogance proved their undoing. They had allowed the Leser Races to expand exponetially, confident in their power to control them, and sure of the Vampires loyalty. With the knowledge taught to them by the Vampire faction, the Lesser Races were able to use their numbers to drive the Elders back. The Rebellion lasted for nearly three centuries. The number of Lesser Races lost in the fighting was too high to remember, and those who were left were determined to finish what their ancestors had started. As the massed armies of the Rebellion advanced on the last city of the Elders, the Eternal Citadeal, the Elders enacted their final contingency. Using all the magic at their disposal, the Elder sundered the land the Lesser Races marched across, stripping it of all life, and turning it into a realm filled with monsters beyond imagining. The Lesser Races withdrew back to the lands they still controlled, and established themselves there. The leader of the Rebellion, a Human, gathered the leaders of the other races together, and they united to form the Empire of Vrelan. The first Human Emperor, and Vampire Empress ruled above the united Empire. Beneath them, every race that stood with them in the Rebellion joined the Legate Council, each given nobility status, and in charge of running the day to day affairs of the Empire.

Peace reigned for many years. Imperial armies secured the border they shared with the Deadlands, building mighty bastions and fortress's, allowing the Lesser Races to make a better life for themselves. In time however, fractures began to appear within the Vrelan Empire. The Empress, who had always been a Vampire, began to grow irritated with their Human equal, and plotted to replace Humanity as the leader of the Empire. When the plot was revealed, the Empire shattered in two, and the Civil War between the Emperor and Empress lasted for half a century. From the aftermath of the Civil War, the Empire became firmly ruled by Humanity. the Vampires and all their supporters fled the boundaries of the Empire, forming several other nations, and going into hiding if possible. Peace was restored, and has endured for many years. The nations of the world grew to accept one another, and open trade and travel became the norm. The occasional border dispute would erupt from time to time, but the Known World did not know war the likes of the Rebellion or Civil War again.
