Following the Battle of Ettenmark Fields, we were scattered. Thin on resources and troops, our commander called a tactical retreat. I can not say much about what the future holds, I only hope that we can continue to serve The Legion and thus Humanity."

Karlsburg burns.

Originally intended to be a heroic stand against the Cinder King's armies outside of the Aldermani Capital, The mercenary band known as The Legion lost at The Battle of Ettenmark. In his final moments, General Remarque made a decision: Divide the remaining army and hope the Eastern Kingdoms come up with a plan. Each would be given one of the remaining three Chosen and told to go to a bastion, hopefully leading the Cinder King's Broken behind them. You were ordered to go to Skydagger Keep and fortify the border between the Eastern Kingdoms and Aldermark before the winter comes.

The road is long and perilous, and the Undead are close behind.

What is this?

Band of Blades is a Blades in the Dark hack about how War is Hell. The Legion is an elite band of mercenaries facing countless undead that swarm once fertile lands. Following a harrowing defeat, the various remaining branches were told to make a tactical retreat, leading the hordes of undead and their generals behind them. The Legion is a mercenary force consisting of volunteers from each of the Four Eastern Kingdoms. Each also has a Chosen, a demigod-like figure of great power, accompanying them on their retreat, and are pursued by a Broken, a former Chosen corrupted by the power of The Cinder King.

Basically, think World War Z meets The Black Company. The technology is roughly 1700/1800's with clockwork mechanics, alchemy, sniper rifles, and plate armor. Magic also exists, but is only in the hands of a rare few.

It uses a modified version of Blades in the Dark consisting of Specialist Playbooks for operations where in an Operation, as well as Soldier and Rookie playbooks to assist the two specialists sent on that mission. There are also Camp Units where players determine what moves to make next interspersed with interactions at the camp or in the town the army is currently in.

Death is also expected for field operatives.

What an interesting idea! I didn't know there was a BitD variant for telling gritty war stories, but it sounds fun. Shame you didn't get any interest with this pitch, but let me know if you pitch anything like this in the future.
