Akeam reached behind the princess to grab Ion's spare vest with his free hand. "So here's what we'll do--" he said as he stepped back a few feet but his words were cut short when he saw how red and stiff the princess had become. He wasn't even sure if she was breathing anymore.
The first time they met, he saw her as a curious trespasser. The second time, he knew her as Ion's childhood friend. But this is the first time he considered her status as a "lady." With that in thought, barging in suddenly when she hasn't properly dressed was wrong, though she'd be here for days before she gets anything on. Being too close was a mistake too. Seeing her like this, laughing would be rude and insensitive, despite how amusing it may have been.
He smiled in pity before patting her in the head.
"You don't have to be so nervous," he said kindly, then in his usual tone, "I can't help you dress of you're as stiff as a log. I won't do anything inappropriate. I may not look it but I'm probably a good ten years older than you." He paused briefly then smiled before he added, "I'm not interested in girls."
"Here," he handed her the vest, "put that over the white shirt. Tuck in the white shirt tails in the pants. Make sure the pants' waist line is slightly above your waist. We button up the vest... then use this--" he said as he placed the corset, "--to keep everything in place."
He kneeled down as he struggled with the corset's ribbons; it wasn't everyday he helped a woman put on a corset after all. "I swear I don't know how women can stand to deal with this everyday. I'll bet you've never even put these things on by yourself."
"There," he said after he finished. "We'll use that as a makeshift belt until we go to the next port. We'll get you a belt then. Now let's not keep the captain waiting, shall we?"
Eleonore remained standing, unable to say or do anything. It amazed her how calmly Akaem moved around the room and then proceeded to wrap his arms around her back so he would be able to adjust the corset around her. There was nothing normal about this situation for the young princess. Physical proximity to men had always been strictly forbidden by her Father at all times. Even when it came to servants, her Father preferred maids to be assisting his precious daughter. The only real exception had been Ion. But that was mostly because her father couldn't stop her from sneaking around when she was smaller.
Before she knew it Akaem had moved to pat her head and was smiling in front of her. The coloration in her face became more intense as he smiled in pity at the young woman. To be honest, Eleonore did not like feeling like this. Embarrassed and with no control over the situation. It wasn't something that, as a princess, she was used to dealing with. Here, she couldn't give orders and did not have any sort of authority. It was going to be something she would have to get used to but Eleonore had convinced herself that this new experience was better than a life of solitude and responsibility in the castle.
The princess, however, couldn't help but smile back when Akaem started to speak with a kindness in his voice. Although Eleonore knew virtually nothing about this man, something told her he was a decent person. Maybe it was the kindness in his voice, or the fact that he seemed to be close to Ion. Either way, Eleonore hoped to get along with the man and everyone else in the crew.
Finally, Eleonore was able to relax slightly. At least enough to give Akaem a smile of her own as words finally left her mouth. A little backtalk for calling the future ruler of a country a 'girl'. Although the redness of her cheeks didn't fit the image of royalty.
"Who says you don't look your age, old man?"
Of course, the playfulness in her voice made it pretty clear Eleonore was not seriously insulting the person trying to help her dress. Truth be told, Eleonore could be quite sarcastic when she wanted to. Although it was a part of her personality she did not have the luxury to practice. After all, anything but a sweet, soft spoken princess wasn't considered very proper.
Once Akaem started talking again, Eleonore payed attention and followed his instructions. She had to admit, this was a pretty creative way to fix her 'fashion' issue.
"You get accustomed to it after a while. Plus, who needs to be comfortable, right?"
Eleonore said once he was done adjusting the uncomfortable piece of clothing. Despite all the hastle, it seemed like his idea worked. Nothing was falling off her slender body now.
"Of course. Thank you for your help."
The princess said, expressing her gratitude with a light bow. Royal habit, after all.
Akeam was caught slightly off-guard by the princess’s boldness. Honestly, he didn’t think she had it in her. Her tone told him she was just joking. Besides, Ion tells him that he acts like an old man anyway, so he wouldn’t have been offended. He grinned in return. To play along, he feigned a gasp and checked his reflection in the mirror. When she started to walk towards the door, as he was catching up to her, he shouted after her, “Hey! You don’t really mean it when you called me an “old man” right?!”
That earned him a joyful laugh and he laughed along with her as they exited the captain’s quarters.
----
Ion stood up in reflex when the door opened and he proceeded to walk towards his quarters. Though he faltered when he heard Ellie’s melodious laugh. How long has it been since he’s heard that sound? He smiled in the knowledge that she was at least enjoying herself and continued to pace towards her when Akeam came out next to Ellie, laughing and looking pleased. That put another stop in his tracks. Why in the world had Akeam come out of the same room as Ellie? Especially, when she had just finished getting dressed? A myriad of questions popped in his head, all unanswered.
His childhood friend and his best friend, two of the most important people in his life, were getting along; that should make him happy, right? So, why did the sight of them together disturb him?
Ellie’s like a little sister to me, he thought, so it’s probably just his brotherly nature showing through. Her sneaking into his ship wasn’t exactly the safest thing to do, so his protectiveness was probably just in high alert. With that settled, he shrugged off the uneasiness and walked towards the two of them.
“Finally out,” he said, “That took you long enough.”
He scanned her attire. It was strange… seeing her wear anything other than a flowery dress. He never really thought of it before, but it was one of those things that reminded him of the differences in their status. Common people can’t afford the dresses that she wore so seeing her in it always put him in his place. They were friends, yes, almost siblings even, but he always knew there was that gap between them that could never be bridged. When he became a pirate, an outlaw, that gap only widened. But seeing her in these clothes, in his clothes, somehow put her in his world. Like this, she didn’t look like a princess at all, she looked… common, ordinary, attainable.
Attainable? What was that supposed to mean?
He must have been staring at her a second too long because both Ellie and Akeam looked at him with peculiar looks on their faces.
He cleared his throat, “I’m impressed; I must say that’s a rather creative way of using my clothes.” He groaned inwardly. Why in the world did he sound like a pompous ass when he spoke to her? He really was impressed, but instead he sounded like he was belittling her. His brain mentally face-palmed him.
His gaze rose to meet Akeam’s and he could see the ever-present amused smirk. Great. Akeam knows that he isn't acting like himself. Can anyone blame him? Alright, so this situation isn't exactly the easiest thing to swallow but if life at sea taught him anything, it was to be flexible and to be able to adapt to sudden changes. And he'll put those skills to good use.
He tried again for a more amiable tone, “Really, you look…” Pretty? Beautiful? “…like you belong. I can’t even tell you’re a noble,” he grinned at her, happy with himself that he sounded friendlier and he that didn’t have to lie… or tell a truth that he really didn’t want to admit.
Ellie opened her mouth to respond, but the were interrupted when suddenly they heard "A wench on board!" from atop the crow's nest. In less than the time it took them to blink, all eyes were on them. And Shik, the crew member stationed at the crow's nest, was swinging toward them, landing right in front of Ellie.
"My lady, I apologize for calling you a wench. You are too good for such a title. I don't know what we did to deserve a visit from an angel such as yourself."
As Eleonore started to walk towards the door, Akaem seemed to gasp and move towards the mirror that stood next to the closet. Pretending to inspect his face, Akaem then shouted at the princess. The young woman couldn't help but laugh at Aakem and his convincing performance as she opened the door. The more time passed, the more excited Eleonore became. She was away from the castle, away from her parents and getting along with someone from the crew. Most importantly, the young princess was now able to see Ion and experience freedom by his side.
Finally, the young woman was out of the room and laughing happily when Ion came towards her and Aakem. It then dawned upon her what this must look like. After all, Aakem had come out of the room where Eleonore had been undressing. The thought sent slight coloration to her cheeks but Eleonore decided not to say anything. It was embarrassing to think about the explanation, much more to talk about it.
Eleonore was brought back from her thoughts when Ion spoke again. Honestly, she did not know how she looked in her present attire. It was the complete opposite of what she was used to. And truth be told, she was enjoying it. The interesting part was that her clothes were having quite the curious effect. The lack of a puffy dress, carefully styled hair and matching accessories were making feel.....normal. A feeling that had been foreign until this moment.
"Well, I am wearing men's clothes."
The princess admitted, a smile on her face as the sentence left her delicate mouth. She was wearing men's clothing. The simple thought brought amusement to the young woman. It was a simple act that up until right now did not seem possible. She hadn't even been away from home for a week and Eleonore was already doing things that a few days ago had been impossible.
Awaiting for a response, Eleonore couldn't help but notice Ion staring. Did she really look that different? Judging by his expression, the girl guessed that was the case. The princess just hoped it wasn't in a bad way. Either way, the woman decided to try and get his attention at some point. After a few seconds, Eleonore waved her hand in his face with a puzzled look.
And as Ion finally spoke, the puzzled look seemed to remain there for a second. Eleonore was reminded yet again that Ion really wasn't the person she knew all those years ago. And yet, the princess was still happy to be here. Despite all the changes, Eleonore was convinced that deep inside their friendship wasn't gone. It had simply changed forms. Eleonore would just have to get used to the new Ion. But the princess didn't think that would be a problem.
That ideology was simply reinforced when Ion spoke again, his tone much more familiar. Just when the young woman was about to respond, a shout stopped her. Before she knew it, everyone was looking in their direction and a crew member was standing right in front of her.
"Hello. My name is Ellie, it's a pleasure to meet you."
The princess said, choosing to leave out her title or relation to Ion. Quickly enough, Eleonore caught sight of her father's diplomat. The man looked at the princess with confusion and full of doubt. Without saying a word, Eleonore looked back at the man with a plea to remain silent.
“A woman!” “A girl!” “On the ship!” “We’ve been blessed!”
“Back off, Shik,” Ion cautioned, slightly pushing away Shik who as found Ellie’s hand and kissing it profusely.
“It’s just… we never have a woman on board, Captain. I-It’s just been too long,” Shik pleaded with a wry grin.
Ion laughed with a shake of his head, “Yeah, right. Like I’ll believe that after coming back to an empty ship that first day in Faylea.”
Shik shrugged and smirked, “You caught me.” At his admission, Akeam chuckled. Shik refocused his attention on Ellie, once again grabbing her hand and planting another kiss, “Mahila Ellie, that is such a beautiful name. You are--”
“—my sister, Shik,” Ion interrupted. He turned to everyone, raising and waving his hand to no one in particular, “None of you are allowed to do anything inappropriate while she's on this ship, got it?!”
The response he got from his crew was laughter.
“Hey! I mean it,” the laughter subsided. “I swear, if any one of you touches a single hair on her head, I don’t care if I’m your captain, I’m throwing you to the sharks. Now, go back to work!”
The members mumbled and grumbled but grudgingly followed his orders. When the crowd finally dissipated, leaving only Ion, Ellie and Akeam, Ion looked at Ellie to see her reaction.
To be honest, Eleonore had not expected the commotion her presence brought. Sure, the young woman was aware how exclusive pirates were in terms of gender. After all, the princess had never really heard about a female pirate but then again, Eleonore had only heard rumors from the servants on the topic of pirates. What the reality was, Eleonore did not know. However, now that she was here the young princess could discover if those rumors were true. Although she had to admit that part of her was nervous from all the rumors she had heard. Supposedly, pirates were brutal, savages and opportunists. Eleonore just hoped that these things were false and that Ion had not changed to the point where their friendship would fade.
Suddenly, the feeling of someone grabbing her hand and then kissing it brought Eleonore back from her thoughts. At the action, the princess couldn't help but blush brightly and stiffen up slightly. These actions and events weren't things Eleonore was used to. It would take some time to get familiar with the crew and the way the ship worked, but the princess had hope that this adventure would be everything she had been looking forward to.
As Ion and Shink interacted, Eleonore couldn't help but smile. Not only did Eleonore appreciate Ion looking out for her but the princess had to admit the conversation between them was refreshing. To hear friends speak to each other wasn't something Eleonore was used to. For the most part, the young woman spoke with the maids on a daily basis but the conversation was never the way Eleonore wanted it. It was always formal and with a sense of responsibility that quickly got exhausting. Hearing Ion and a crew member speak with such familiarity gave her hope that she might be able to make friendships in the ship aside from spending time with Ion.
Suddenly, her hand was taken again and kissed once more. Before she could say anything, Ion had interrupted and was now addressing the whole crew. Eleonore couldn't help but feel happy as Ion talked to his men. Even after all these years, her best friend was still looking out for the young princess. However, at the reaction of his crew, Eleonore couldn't help but be amused. Once everyone had dissipated, the princess couldn't hold her laughter any longer. The young woman chuckled briefly before looking at Ion in amusement.
"Thank you, Ion. I have a feeling this is going to be a wonderful adventure."
It had been an entire week and Eleonore's feelings had not changed. If anything, her feelings had simply intensified. Everything around the princess was new and exciting. From the constant and beautiful view of the sea to the people that surrounded her. To be honest, the interaction with others was what seemed to be the most peculiar for the young princess. In the castle, there were no real conversations. Nothing but formal speech and carefully chosen words from the maids and butlers. No one wanted to make the princess upset, after all.
Here, things were different. Every crew member seemed to speak their mind and Eleonore couldn't help but find it refreshing and enjoyable. Even the crew members had taken a liking to the princess as well. The young woman loved to listen to their tales of riches and adventure and the men seemed to enjoy telling those stories. Of course, Eleonore was not sure if she had been spared any bloody details but she loved to listen to the tales regardless. Some of the men had even offered to teach her the games they played while looking for their next adventure or even teach her terminology commonly used between crew members. It hadn't been expected but Eleonore felt like the men were making an effort to make her feel like part of the crew.
The men in his crew took to Ellie a lot quicker and easier than Ion had thought. They weren’t rude, rowdy, inappropriate, or obscene around her. Heck, he noticed that some of them even softened the way they spoke. The usual rough manner in which they spoke was exchanged for a more polite, flattering speech. Admittedly, he was worried that they will act the way they usually do in the brothels, but, beyond his expectations, they were respectful to Ellie.
But, in retrospect, he really shouldn’t be surprised. They did the same thing for him, after all, the first time he joined their crew, he reminisced with a smile. What did he even worry about?
As amazed as he was at their behavior, there was nothing more fascinating than seeing Ellie discover the beauty of the open sea. Her eyes took in everything like a sponge absorbing water. She probably never even noticed but he would look at her in those few moments where she would stand alone on the side of the ship. She would put both hands on the railing, close her eyes, take a deep breath in. Then she would open her eyes and take in world around her, and in her face, you could see absolute bliss and excitement. Seeing her expression, maybe her being here wasn’t such a bad thing after all. Everybody has to live at some point. Isn’t that exactly what he did when he left?
Even now, as she is engaged with another group of crew members, he could see the enthusiasm seeping through her pores as she played a round of a card game with them animatedly. He can only smile proudly at the scene… seeing as how he can’t really do much when he’s stuck at the poop deck manning the wheel.
It was a really good thing that his members liked Ellie of course, but it was starting to get to a point where it was irritating since it’s been gravely getting in the way of them doing their jobs.
He thought that maybe, just maybe, her being in his ship was a chance for them to reconnect, talk about the past beyond the letters, or discuss their plans for the future. I don’t know, just something. But for the past week now, he’s been stuck behind the wheel or somewhere else fixing something that should be fixed by one of his other men who is preoccupied with Ellie’s attention. So he has done nothing with Ellie, except watch over her from above, literally, as the poop deck is on a higher ground than the rest of the ship.
He usually has a lot of patience. His crew was made up of free-spirits, who hardly listened to anybody, but despite that, he never had to nag to anyone to get their job done. So this was bordering ridiculous. But he didn’t want to tell that and risk making Ellie feel like she was being a bother, so he said nothing.
On the eight day since she came to the ship, Ion was still stuck navigating the waters behind the wheel. The wind was blowing from unpredictable directions today and the ship needed constant monitoring to keep it from changing directions unintentionally.
As the dusk turned to night, the crew grew louder in their merriment: feasting, drinking, singing in tune-deaf notes, dancing. While Ellie didn’t drink, she did dance and laugh with them. They must have really put their all into the festivities because it wasn’t soon after that most of them migrated into their quarters or just simply passed out on the deck.
Ion fought back a frustrated sigh. But it came out anyway. He needed to reset and cool his head. So instead of looking down at his men, he looked up to the sky. By now, there was no trace left of the light of the sun. The ship only lit by a few candles. So everything around him were blacks and shadows. In the absence of bright light, he could see the stars and constellations clearly, especially the Polaris, the North Star. The sky seemed to glow, a milky streak visible across the sky. The quietness of the ship and the stillness of the stars above him gave him peace and he could feel his heartbeat slow when he hadn’t even realized it had accelerated.
“Ion?” he heard a hesitant call from the stair case. He recognized the voice, and immediately his heart rate increased above normal… from the start that she gave him.
“Ellie,” he said softly, “anything I can do for you?”
Eleonore had never been happier in her life. Everyday, the young woman was doing something new and exciting. From playing unknown card games to dancing and singing with the crew. Here, there was no one controling her life, who she was and how she should be acting. Here, Eleonore was her own person and that feeling was something she had never felt before. It was wonderful, and a feeling she never wanted to get rid of. Of course, at some point, Eleonore would have to go back to home. Despite how much she wanted to stay, the young princess knew she had a responsibility that she would have to accept at some point. But for now, Eleonore would enjoy her time here and forget about the life that waited for her back home.
And so, that's exactly what Eleonore did as the days passed by. Most of the days, the young princess would end the day with the crew as they danced, sang, and drank. Of course, the young woman did not drink with them. Eleonore had never tasted alcohol and didn't really feel like doing so. Despite being outside of the castle, there were habits and ideals Eleonore couldn't get rid of. It wasn't really proper for a woman, much less a princess, to drink such hard liquor. Instead, Eleonore participated in the dancing and singing, learning the dances the men would normally do.
If the young woman was not doing that, then Eleonore would be learning the songs the crewmen seemed to love so much. The princess guessed her singing lessons had finally come in handy. Throughout the years, Eleonore's voice had been trained to be sweet, calm and melodious regardless if she was singing or not. To tell the truth, Eleonore was required to learn and know a lot of skills that were considered 'ladylike' but the princess had never really used them.
And so, the week continued as Eleonore found herself singing and dancing once more as her 8th day on the ship came to a close. The men had drank excessively and were now going to sleep. Eleonore was not sure how late it was, but she didn't really feel like going to sleep. For the past week, the young princess had gone to bed right after the festivities. And so, she had not taken the opportunity to see the sea and stars during the night. Eleonore had wanted to stargaze for quite a long time but the princess wasn't allowed to leave her room once the sun went down.
Finding herself wide awake, the young woman decided to stay and stare at the stars. However, as she raised her gaze to the sky, Eleonore couldn't help but see a figure guiding the ship. As she got closer, the princess seemed to recognize the man in front of her.
"Ion?"
When Ion's voice answered her back, Eleonore couldn't help but smile. It hadn't dawned upon her until that moment but Eleonore hadn't spent much time with Ion throughout the week. Everything here had been new and exciting so the princess had not gotten the opportunity to reconnect with her childhood friend. However, now seemed like the perfect opportunity to do such a thing.
"Keep me company?" the young woman asked as she walked up the stairs and to his side. With a smile, Eleonore looked up at the sky to see the magnificent stars. With only a few candles to light the ship, the night sky could be seen clearly and beautifully. Every star had such a bright but delicate glow. The moon was bright and round, giving the sea a touch of mystery and wonder. Eleonore had to admit the scenery was one of the most beautiful things she had ever seen.
"The night sky is beautiful out here..." Eleonore said, her gaze staying upwards as she admired the beauty of the night. The stars' shine seemed to reflect back in Eleonore's caramel colored eyes as her smile reflected the wonder and amazement she felt whenever she looked towards the moon.
“Are you going to pay me for my time?” Ion responded with a smile, though he knew Ellie wouldn’t see his expression.
On his question, her footsteps stopped. And her faltered step somehow managed to amuse and sadden him. With a half-smile, he added, “I was just kidding.”
After a well-concealed gentle sigh of relief, the footsteps resumed towards him.
Ion kept his eyes carefully on the horizon, not really looking at Ellie. Still he was aware of her presence as she walked towards him and finally stopped to stand by his side.
“The night sky is beautiful out here…” She said that with so much marvel that he could see her smile even in the darkness.
“I agree,” her smile now reflected on his face. “You would never be able to see this kind of sight in the towns of Faylea. There is too much light there. Even the view from the secluded mountains doesn’t compare to this.
“Right now, the moon is out so there is a bit of light, making it impossible to see the smaller stars. But on the night of a new moon, we would put out all the candles on the ship, and you can really see the night sky in its full glory.”
It was then that he turned towards her. The night sky was reflected on her eyes, casting a blue hue on the warm caramel shade. The stars made her eyes look as if they were sparkling. The night sky was without a doubt beautiful, but in Ellie’s eyes they were even more so.
Then there was a sense of peace. There was a sense of rightness in her being next to him and he realized how much he really missed friend all these years.
Ion took advantage of the dark to really study this new Ellie for the first time. She wasn’t the Ellie that was in his memories. That Ellie would never have disobeyed her parents and left the palace. They didn’t even look the same. The resemblance was there, but the person next to him wasn’t the kid he remembered. He may have changed in the last six years but she did too. What things has he missed in her life these past six years?
“You’ve really grown…” an involuntary wistful whisper escaped his mouth.
Although she wasn't able to see Ion clearly in the darkness, Eleonore couldn't help but love the feeling of peace and companionship that filled the princess as she stood next to Ion. It had been so long since the young woman felt like this. The last time Eleonore had experienced such happiness had probably been right before Ion left. The young princess hadn't thought about it until now but Eloenore really depended on Ion back at the castle. Now that she was standing next to him again, Eleonore realized how much his presence affected her feelings back home. Maybe that had been the slow acting catalyst that brought her to this ship. Although her unwanted engagement she wasn't even supposed to know about might have also helped in her rebellious and irresponsible decision.
As Ion started to speak, Eleonore kept her gaze towards the sky trying to imagine the scene Ion was describing. It sounded beautiful and the princess hoped to see it while on her adventure. To be honest, Eloenore was not sure how long she would stay. The princess guessed her safest option was to stay until Ion brought the ambassador back to Faylea. Although at this point, that was something Eleonore did not want to think about. And so, the young woman pushed the issue to the side and continued to listen to the voice next to him.
"It sounds breath taking. I hope I get the opportunity to see that," Eleonore said. The princess wanted to experience everything she could. After all, once she came back home her life would take a dramatic turn. Not only would she be watched over by a servant at all times but there would be no escape once the young woman got married. For the slightest moment, Eloenore's smile obtained a hint of sadness as she remembered what life would be like back at home. The princess couldn't stay with Ion forever. He had adventures to chase and Eleonore had responsibility she couldn't get away from.
Quickly enough though, her expression went back to normal as she continued to gaze at the stars. Even being out at night was quite peculiar for her. Although forbidden, the princess had been able to sneak out of her room at night and into the garden for a short walk but Eleonore had only managed to do so a couple of times.
Ion's voice brought Eleonore back to reality, making the princess finally turn towards her friend. At the whisper, Eleonore couldn't help but smile. She had grown? Eleonore wasn't sure if she felt like that was the truth. After all, her life hadn't changed in years. At least when Ion was with her, things seemed to appear more...colorful. When he left all those years ago, her world went back to black and white. Everyday it had been the same planned routine. Ion, on the other hand, had completely changed his life. If anyone had grown, Eleonore thought it was him.
"Me? Are you sure, Captain?" Eleonore asked with a smile. "You became captain of a whole ship, Ion. I think the one that grew is you. You're going to have to tell me that story one day," the princess said, her voice soft and caring.
A low chuckle arose from Ion at Ellie’s comment, feeling a little bit proud and happy that she acknowledges his status as the captain of the ship.
“Why wait for some day that might not come? We have all the time right now, don’t we? And well, I don’t like to brag but…” he let the comment trail off and intentionally shot her a smug look and wiggled his eyebrows, not at all sorry about the pride he was in being a pirate captain. He was rewarded with another of Ellie’s laugh. When she laughed, he laughed along with her. When the laughter died down, “Seriously though, what do you want to know? It’s not some royal secret or anything and I’m not trying to keep it hidden.”
Then she gave him that look, with eyebrows raised and doubt in her eyes. He realized that that wasn’t going to get pass her.
“Alright, fine… So I was trying to keep it hidden from you. With that being the case, I probably won’t ever say anything to you if you don’t ask. But it really had nothing to do with the fact that I became a pirate.
“Being a pirate is not something I’m ashamed of. If I felt that way, I would never be worthy of being those men’s—” he nodded to his men at the lower deck, “—captain. They’re a loyal bunch. The kind that would jump in front of a blade or a bullet to save you and not even have to think about it. Oh they whine and complain and probably get you into trouble more times than you can count, but at the end of the day, they’ll always have yours and each other’s back. And I’ll gladly do the same for any one of them. I wouldn’t trade them for anyone else…” his voice trailed off as Ion got lost in his own thoughts and memories. When he snapped back into consciousness a second later, he smiled at her mischievously and said, “…but don’t tell them I said that. They’ll never live it down and then they’ll use it to blackmail and manipulate me to do their bidding. They’re not above using those techniques to get what they want.” He noted with amusement.
Eleonore couldn't help but smile as Ion chuckled. It had been years since the princess had the pleasure of hearing that sound. For a moment, it brought her back to her happy childhood years. The times where Ion and the princess would play in the castle gardens or hide in the unexplored places of the castle.
Before long, Ion's voice brought the princess back to reality. His comments making her laugh once more. As they talked, Eleonore couldn't help but notice something in Ion that she had not realized since her arrival in the ship. Eleonore had never seen Ion happier. Even as children, the princess could not remember seeing him with such a smile. Once the laughter died down, Ion attempted to reassure her that his position was no secret. However, Eleonore couldn't help but look at him with doubt.
Instead of asking questions, Eleonore allowed him to keep talking. The princess could hear the passion and happiness behind Ion's voice as he talked about being a pirate. It made her wonder why he ever hid it from her in the first place. Eleonore could only guess it had to do with the stigma that seemed to attach itself to being a pirate. Nonetheless, the young woman would have liked to hear the truth years ago. Despite the slight changes in Ion, Eleonore could tell the man hadn't really changed drastically.
Seeing Ion so happy, Eleonore couldn't help but turn to her friend with a smile and affection in her eyes.
"You seem happy, Ion. I can only imagine the things and places you have seen."
“Well, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy myself,” he chuckled low. But this time as the laughter died down, his eyes became solemn even as the smile remained on his face. “How about you Ellie? How did your six years pass?”
He let out a low derisive laugh, aimed really towards himself. “Did you realize that I never even asked you how you’ve been? Some “brother” huh? I gained so much from my travels, you’d think manners would be one of them but that wasn’t the case apparently,” he joked, half-serious.
After he got over the initial shock of seeing Ellie in his ship and finally got to reflecting on their reunion, he could honestly beat himself up for it.
I tried to protect you… I may not be the person you think I am any more… Don’t expect me to pretend like nothing has changed… I don’t think you want to get to know the ‘new’ me…
He sounded so patronizing, even to himself, he could cringe. Get over your damn self, he chided himself. You’re not that honorable.
“You asked me whether I would have ever returned to Faylea if I never received your father’s summons and I couldn’t answer,” he paused. “I can’t… give you an answer to that question, because I don’t know the answer to it myself. Truth be told, I didn’t know how to face you when I knew I couldn’t keep my promise to you…,” he admitted despite not knowing how she would react.
“But,” he looked straight into her eyes, “I’m really sorry Ellie. I don’t think I’ve given you the welcome you deserve. I’m only glad my crew had the decency to welcome you when I obviously lacked that. I am truly glad you’re here.”
Having said all he could have said at the moment, he just waited; for an answer, a comment, a question. Though the moment of silence only lasted a few seconds, Ion noted that they were the longest seconds he’s ever had.
To be honest, Eleonore was not sure how to respond when Ion's laughter died down. Mostly because nothing new had happened in the last six years. Everyday had basically been the same. Meetings. Lessons. Obedience. Although Eleonore had blamed her arranged marriage for her rash decisions, the young woman was beginning to realize that hadn't been the real reason. At some point, Eleonore would surely run away from the castle. Ion's absence as well as her parent's decision had simply been excuses to run away sooner rather then later. As Eleonore thought about her decisions, the young woman caught the sound of Ion's voice once again.
"It's alright. I heard siblings are supposed to annoy each other, no?" Eleonore asked with a chuckle. The young princess did not expect for Ion to be the same man she had said goodbye to all those years ago. After all, his journey had literary been life changing. Nonetheless, despite the obvious changes in her friend, Eleonore knew Ion remained true to their friendship. He cared for Eleonore in a way that no one had before. Regardless of the small changes, Ion and Eleonore were friends.
And so, the princess waited as Ion spoke. To tell the truth, Eleonore was surprised. Surprised that Ion not only remembered their promise but that he held to it dearly. Enough to consider whether he could fulfill it or not. Although Eleonore would have liked to see her friend regardless of the promise they had made years ago. When Ion looked at her in the eyes, Eleonore waited until he was done to voice her opinion.
With a joyful smile, Eleonore looked back at her best friend. "Thank you, Ion. It means the world to me that you remember our promise. I also have to apologize for my rash decision. Coming to your ship without your permission was irresponsible, inconsiderate and cowardly but...you allowed me to stay. Thank you...for making my dream come true."
It wasn't until she watched the stars reflected in Ion's eyes that Eleonore noticed how beautiful they were. Ion really wasn't a kid anymore, was he?
