Bullet
Eye for an eye
The room spins about his head as Alex listens to the heated exchange between Riley and Magnus, a jumble of words that, in his near inebriated mind, make no sense to him. His eyes run across the room in a haze, the bright halogen lights above leaving a fading trail behind with each tossing movement. The man and Riley have become nothing but blurs in his vision. An unintelligible cacophony of whispers gnaw at the back of his mind, forcing their way forward. Along with it comes a sharp pain, like a pin slowly breaking the skin, driving directly into his temple. His eyes close forcefully, shaking his head frantically to attempt to find some sort of relief.
"Alex... Alex..." The voices in his head whisper, merging nearly imperceptibly into one voice with each passing second. "Alex... ALEX!" His eyes shoot open, discovering nothing but darkness before him. "Wha.... what's going on?!" He gasps, unsure of even his own sanity at the moment.
"Alex! Can you hear me?" A voice echoed in the darkness, as if coming from every direction at once.
"Y-yes. I can hear you." His breathing slowed to a mild panic. "Who is this?" He managed.
"It's Chloe, Alex! We saw the whole fiasco on the news with the multiple accidents, and we wanted to be sure you were okay. A friend of mine helped us to get into 'contact' with you, I guess you could say."
He didn't quite understand everything that was happening, but went along speaking to the voice in this void. "Yeah, I'm with Magnus now. I-" A desperate voice cut through the echoing replies, reaching into his very soul. "Riley!"
He gasped for air in a coughing fit, aware he was still in the room he last recalled, with Magnus and Riley, who was now being hauled away. "Where are you taking her?!" He demanded, glaring in Magnus's direction.
"Worry not, young Alex; she is in capable hands. We are merely sending you off with a tracking device implanted within you, for everyone's safety, including your own. Perhaps you mistook my words. You won't be leaving freely, but you will have to be under stricter supervision. However, we've learned a constraining environment does not foster good development of a special person's abilities. However," he leaned closer to Alex, "you have already seen the extent the government will go to procure you fine specimens, even if it means killing off innocent people. It is my wish that your compassion for such will impel you to reconsider more carefully my offer to remain here, not only for your protection. After all, should you be in danger of getting caught, those I have appointed to keep watch over you will not hesitate to end your lives, for the sake of our future."
