I am the Deathkitten! Fear me!
The World

Hello and welcome to Astrella’s Boarding School for the Powered! You’ve been accepted into this wondrous school because you want to become a superhero. In this world of uncertainty, where many supervillains continue to run rampant, we must teach the up and coming generations how to fight against the evil and keep the world safe.

This is where you come in. You wonderful young people with abilities that you may not fully understand yet. You are coming in as freshmen and you will leave as superheroes. Astrella’s School is located on the West Coast of the United States of America in Oregon, just outside of Portland to the West. This school, in an effort to keep its students safe from the numerous villains that would wish to harm them, is not grounded. Instead, it floats above, staying in place about 2,000 to 3,000 feet up.

This school takes in people from all woks of life, regardless of money or race, as long as they can pass the entrance exam.

This roleplay takes place around 40 years into the future, in an alternate universe where super-powered individuals have been around since the middle ages at least. They are not common, but are around enough that no one in their right mind would dispute their existence. Supervillains have always been a problem, but in recent years it has gotten much worse.

The school was built over 50 years ago, but has recently undergone a complete transformation. Within the last five years, they demolished the school and rebuilt it in it’s current, much larger, floating state. They even instituted a program for delinquent kids to be enrolled into the school at either the request of their previous school, or in more serious cases law enforcement, in an effort to curb rising supervillain crime rates.

The school has always been rather public about its hopes and goals for the future, but surprisingly little is known about the courses, the entrance exam, or even most of the campus. The school does this purposefully, hoping to at least partially shield the students from undesired media attention. This does not, however, extend to field trips or other excursions the students may take. Most events outside of school grounds attract a tremendous amount of attention from media outlets.

They changed so much of how they worked not only in an effort to reduce future crime, but more specifically in response to a particular event. 9 years ago in Los Angeles, there was a horrific riot that took place. Tensions were rising between Powered and Non-Powered individuals, and though mostly peaceful protest… everything came to a head on the 12th of November, 2048, in the early hours of the morning.

A group of supervillains known as The Occard Alliance used the tense atmosphere as their debut. Many lives were lost that day, and The OA became swiftly known as one of the worst home-grown terrorist groups that the United States had yet seen. Still, nearly 10 years later, Los Angeles is recovering from the immense property damage and loss of life. Unfortunately, due to very few people in the epicenter surviving the attack, there is no currently known existing footage to let us know precisely what happened that day.

After the tragic event, Powered crime spiked across the country, and new distrust and disdain for Powered people grew. That said, the amount of people who desired to send their kids to school to learn about their abilities skyrocketed. New schools popped up from coast to coast, and the one leading the pack?

These are just a general idea of how the outside of the school looks. I'll probably have to draw pictures later, instead of just finding some.

Most of the training takes place in one of three places: the grassy areas that are rather large and pretty clearly defined, the forested area that covers a large swath of area in a ring around the school (save for the front where it is clear), or the two huge gymnasiums.

Classrooms, although not with awful green chairs (most chairs are a deep purple color), try to foster greater openness, and tend to avoid the typical class setup. Some teachers may decide otherwise, however, and the chairs can be moved at will since they are on rollers. Most classrooms also have lots of windows, instead of being a windowless concrete box.

These are categories for the most prominent aspect of an individual. If they are a human, but have magic, they will be in the “Magic Users” category. If they are a cyborg, but have magic, they are in the “Tech” category.

Rules and Other Information

  • First of all, have fun with this. It's meant to be fun, not a chore. If you start to find it a chore, let me know! I want to know what I can do to help you out!
  • Posts must be more than one paragraph! Or if it is one paragraph, it must be a long paragraph. I really don't like casual RPs.
  • Avoid god-modding. Never assume that something happens before the other player you are writing with confirms it. This is especially applicable in fights. On top of this, be aware of your character's limitations. Your character will get tired when he/she does things, and it is both fun and important to roleplay that accordingly.
  • Osuka Osuka and Daniel Reaving Daniel Reaving are the RP mods, and I may add more in the future!
  • Djinni Djinni is helping with the story development, but he's not on RpN much, so he's not a reliable person to message.

CURRENT DATE - September, 2058

These events take place around 40 years into the future, in an alternate universe where super-powered individuals have been around since the middle ages at least. They are not common, but are around enough that no one in their right mind would dispute their existence. Supervillains have always been a problem, but in recent years it has gotten much worse.

Nearly ten years ago in Los Angeles, there was a horrific riot that took place.

Now more than ever, Superheroes are needed. As time draws nears the ten year anniversary of the OA's successful attack during the riot, experts are certain that there will be trouble. They're not sure whether or not that trouble will come in the form of the mysterious Occard Alliance themselves, or in the form of copycat villains hoping to steal the limelight and become infamous. As the date nears, however, there's little argument that crime is increasing even now. Superheroes, whether they have only just gotten their certification or are an S-class, from the private sector to the military sector, they're on call and told to be aware of any concerning or strange happenings and behavior.

Very recent activity in Portland has only raised awareness more. A symbol of the OA was left at the scene of an explosion and resulting fire. Experts think it could actually be real. This is less than twenty miles from the famous school, Astrella's Boarding School for the Powered, which also suffered from an attack, but no loss of life or major injuries. News reports from the explosion in Portland detailed it well:

latest

Roughly one week ago, a Supervillain attack plagued nearby Portland. At the time not much was known about the situation, but our sources have confirmed that this was the work of the infamous Occard Alliance. This is the first time they've popped up in nearly ten years, causing great concern as the anniversary of the Los Angeles attack nears. In the coming two months, security is expected to drastically increase in LA, in case they target the same city again. Tensions are high right now because of this threat. Anti-power groups are planning protests, and Pro-power groups are doing similar.

Figures show that fifteen people were killed in the attack last week, and 68 more were injured in the large explosion that took out a heavily trafficked restaurant on the corner of NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and NE Colombia Boulevard. Once the police had cleared the area and we were able to gain access to the remains of the building... the damages were clear.

The restaurant owners and their eldest daughter sadly perished in the explosion and resulting fire, leaving behind two younger children.

latest
Despite fires having been on either side of the street in separate buildings, they were, in fact, connected. The restaurant and three other buildings were destroyed and have had the rubble quickly torn down so as to minimize risk to the surrounding buildings. Five nearby buildings had various degrees of damage, though the business owners from most of them state that they really just look forward to getting back to a new normal.

1522201014941.pngAt the scene of the crime, detectives revealed a now-hated symbol of the group. This simple but well-drawn OA was found on a scrap of cloth underneath some of the rubble. Despite the cloth's torn appearance, the police involved believe that this was placed there deliberately to put their mark on the attack.

As these events are unfolding, however, the well-known powered school, Astrella's Boarding School for the Powered, is starting classes. On the day after the restaurant attack, the students got a taste of the campus. Their day was met with strife, however, as explosions were seen from below. A Supervillain cleanup crew was called in, and from what we know, no students were hurt in this attack. They refused to make any comment on whether or not this was linked to the now confirmed OA attack, though it is safe to assume that they are looking into it actively.

This is not the first time that the prestigious school has been attacked on the first day, as villains get more and more bold, but it is by far the flashiest we've seen yet. Their high location keeps them safer from most would-be villains, but not from the pros, it seems. All the same they have reassured parents and guardians of the students attending that they are safe, the lack of student injuries a testament to the school's Superhero staff.

Moving forward it seems we have to be more vigilant and aware of the Supervillain attacks. If you feel you have information that might be useful towards either attack, please contact us at Portland News 5.

Joshlyn out.

As you all know, Superheroes are able to be categorized into a number of identifying positions. First comes who they are actually working for. All registered Superheroes got their certification through the state, and as such can be called on by the government in times of need. Their actual employer and source of income, however, can vary.

There are two sectors. The Military Sector and the Private Sector. In the Private Sector, Superheroes can find their employment through Corporations, which is usually the most lucrative, or through Freelance work, which is unreliable, but gives them a lot more freedom. In the Military Sector, Superheroes can find employment through being Powered Police, which work on domestic soil as their own branch of law enforcement that deals with threats the normal police are incapable of handling, or they can find employment through becoming Powered Servicemen, which work on international soil often. The Military Sector bases pay off of rank, and as such is a bit less lucrative than major corporations, but is incredibly stable income.

Unfortunately, or fortunately if you enjoy the shows, the Superhero line of work has become integrated with a bit of a popularity contest as well. If you work in the Private Sector especially, your pay could be directly related to your popularity rating as well as your rank. For Freelance Superheroes, this can be a boon, as they can get better rewards if they get extraordinarily good popularity rankings, but it can be a bit of a wall for new Superheroes coming into the work. Corporations usually will advertise you, schedule meetings, interviews, talks, and much more so that they can get every bit of popularity in. Even the Military plays the popularity game a little with some of its members, as better PR goes a long way for the Military.

The news outlets, as well as some other companies that do advertising, take in a lot of data on the supers and crank out numbers for their own Popularity Ranking chart. Laws have been put in place that make it so that the people who employ supers cannot be affiliated with a company that does popularity rankings, aside from internal popularity rankings. This, in early years, created too much tension and cost the taxpayers too much in the end. That aside, the methods vary somewhat, but the most popular of the popularity ranking systems uses a fairly simple formula. They rate someone's abilities using this method:

Raw Power ~ ---/100
Visibility ~ ---/100 (How flashy is their power?)
Success ~ ---/100 (What percentage of the time do they win?)
Out of Combat Reputation ~ ---/100 (Are they an ass or do they donate to the kitten orphanage?)
Ranking ~ ---/100 (Each Rank Intern to S Class is worth 20 points.)
Political Abrasiveness ~ ---/100 (How disagreeable are their opinions and how abrasively do they voice their opinions? Higher is less abrasive.)
Property Damage ~ ---/100
Lethality ~ ---/100 (What percent of the time do they NOT kill people? Higher is better.)
Rescue ~ ---/100
Tenure ~ ---/100

They then take the result of this and divide that number by ten, getting the average of the lot and making it into an easily digestible number. For example, the Superheroine "Nanami" is ranked as the following:

Raw Power ~ 077.1/100
Visibility ~ 010.4/100
Success ~ 100/100
Out of Combat Reputation ~ 090.1/100
Ranking ~ 080.3/100 (A Class)
Political Abrasiveness ~ 086.2/100
Property Damage ~ 098/100
Lethality ~ 90.3/100
Rescue ~ 087.1/100
Tenure ~ 003.1/100

Total - 722.6
Ranking - 72.26

That number is then put into a list with many other registered Superheroes, and ranked from highest to lowest. The top 25 Superheroes are ones that basically everyone knows, and are incredibly famous. Some companies have done something similar with the more well known Supervillains, taking their numbers into consideration to make a ranking chart for them as well. Their chart is based more on how infamous they are, how much damage they've done, and things like that. Needless to say, for the United States, the Occard Alliance sits pretty high on the chart, especially as the ten year anniversary nears.

There are a number of well known superheroes and families that have made a mark on society that pretty much everyone knows, or are incredibly influential. Some of them are as follows:

The Oscalia-Aphera family.
  • A large Superhero family who lost many members to the OA conflict ten years ago. They were well known in the acting community as well as the Superhero one.
James Pell
  • A world-renowned Superhero who is known for donating money to Superhero schools and universities. He specializes in wind and weather manipulation.
Bethany Lee
  • A little-known, compared to some on this list, but influential scientist that has made and continues to make leaps and bounds in the field of magitech. She is super-intelligent, though otherwise doesn't have super abilities.
The Morisher family.
  • A Superhero family that were involved with the debris removal and other cleanup after the OA attack. They are a lesser known family comparatively, but they are also a massive benefactor of Astrella's Boarding School.
The Keaton family.
  • A family that is long standing in the Superhero community as expert healers and rescue personnel.
Bahati Pell
  • James Pell's teen daughter, she has become an international icon for African and African-American supers as well as young girls. Her abilities have to do with manipulating the wind, much like her Father.
...and many more.

These supers and super-families adhere to a strict, tiered system based on their capabilities. This standard is accepted in most countries around the world and is as follows:

Threat Levels - Based on Damage capable/hr
  • Threat Level Zero
    • Normality. No active threat.
  • Threat Level One
    • Minor threat. Non-powered criminals. Typically handled by police unless the situation escalates.
  • Threat Level Two
    • Minor threat. Powered criminals and particularly dangerous non-powered criminals. I.E. someone stole a tank or planted bombs in the sewers.
  • Threat Level Three
    • Moderate threat. Supervillains.
  • Threat Level Four
    • City threat. Could cause a city-wide disaster. Think Occard Alliance. These are uncommon, and it has been argued that the OA might in fact be a Level Five threat instead.
  • Threat Level Five
    • Nation threat. Think nuclear levels of damage, or an invading army. No domestic level five threats have ever been declared.
  • Threat Level Six
    • World threat. Could cause a global apocalypse. No level six threats have ever been declared.
Hero Class Scale
  • Intern/Apprentice
    • Be a good dog and listen to your trainer.
  • C Class
    • Level Twos and below.
  • B Class
    • Level Threes and below.
  • A Class
    • Level Fours and below. Can be sent on Level Fives, but only accompanied with S class.
  • S Class
    • All of the threat levels, though in the case of a level 5 or especially a level 6, they would be called in to work in groups of S class.
This system is in place for similar reasons some towns have tornado sirens. Disasters can happen due to bad, powerful people doing horrible things, and the government wants to avoid as much loss of life as possible. Civilians are urged to take the warnings seriously, and can face conviction if purposefully ignored without reason. Likewise, Heroes must follow these scales and be aware of the state of things at all time. Many have devices set to alert them when a threat level changes, similar to how an on call doctor has a pager.

There are much looser "Hero Functions" and "Hero Types" that are not as strictly required. The media enjoys this system as far as sorting Heroes goes, and the government or companies will use it to sort out who gets sent on what. In simple, layman terms they are as follows:

Hero Functions
  • Fighter (Fighty Beat Em Up)
  • Healer/SuperDoctor/Medic (Healie Feelie MacRecoveryFellow/Epic Travel Agents of Awesomeness)
  • Rescue (Swooshy Rescue Dood)
  • Recon/Scout/Spy (Sneak Sneakerton McReconGuy)
  • Creator/Crafter (Crafty McguiverStein)
Hero Types
  • Melee
  • Ranged
Finally, there are a few notes to keep in mind whenever you're out on a job. Please be careful, and thank you for your service!
