This chapter of Isekai Hell, the character Deliverance will be seeking out the magic academy of the world The Ethereal Luminary in the Duchy capital: Aslan. Once found, he will attempt to join as a student.

The first rays of dawn crept over the horizon, casting a soft, dewy light upon the capital city of Aslan, heart of the Duchy. The grand metropolis, nestled by the edge of the vast Continental Lake, came to life as the early morning sun illuminated its unique, whimsical architecture. Buildings spiraled up into the sky, others were suspended in mid-air, shimmering like mirages. The city was a vibrant palette of colors, with structures carved from magic-infused stones that reflected the morning light in iridescent hues.

Spring had graced Aslan, and the city was in full bloom. Delicate petals danced in the morning breeze, carried from the distant wilderness that surrounded the city outskirts, a hint of wildness amid the urban splendor. Birdsong mingled with the faint sounds of waking city life - the hum of magical vehicles, the chime of distant bells, and the murmur of voices.

Deliverance would have awoken early that day. He was to find and join the Ethereal Luminary, the prestigious academy that may hold a key to his future. He was in the heart of Aslan, the city of impossible heights and magic-infused life. Flight carriages, enchanted to float like bubbles, were hitched to every corner, while teleportation portals hummed, ready to whisk away any citizen to their desired destination in an instant. Yet, despite these conveniences, Deliverance would decide to proceed on foot, each step taking him closer to his dream and further from his past. None of the magical conveniences would help much if he had never been to the school before or knew where it was.

Aslan was a city that breathed magic. Magical street lamps glowed softly, their light intelligent enough to brighten or dim according to the needs of passersby. The cobblestones beneath his feet hummed with stored energy, ready to heat or cool the city as the seasons dictated. Automatons, powered by intricate arcane mechanisms, busied themselves with daily chores, their polished stone bodies reflecting the morning light.

Despite the city's grandeur, Deliverance would likely feel a sense of disorientation. The Ethereal Luminary was hidden somewhere amid the maze of gravity-defying buildings and winding, spiraling streets. He presently stood at a crossroad, each path stretching into different districts of the city, teeming with magic and possibilities. Witches on brooms flew by overhead.

So the question remained: how would he navigate this labyrinthine city to find the academy? Would he question a passing citizen, consult a magic-infused map, or perhaps even use one of the numerous public teleportation portals, trusting in luck to guide him to his destination? Maybe there were other options still.

Deliverance

It was a few days after the concert, a thing he was still pondering about at times. However, today, he had something bigger on his mind. After all, the reason he'd been here, The Ethereal Luminary... it was finally time for him to try signing up officially. He knew he lacked status and wealth, but after all the research he did on his own whilst in Aslan, he felt like he'd be able to get in on talent. Well, hoe hoped he could. The fact he wasn't entirely sure was what made this a rather nerve-wrecking experience.

Perhaps that's why he'd gotten lost again. He, for sure, thought he knew they way around Aslan by now, having lived and studied there for a long time, but it seemed like that was wrong. He passed some portal devices, seeing people vanish in front of him only to re-appear somewhere out of sight. Should he use them as well? He wasn't sure. He'd rather not end up in trouble by arriving somewhere he wasn't allowed to be. Flight carriages were too expensive, as were other magical vehicles. He passed a few automatons, stopping to marvel at their design for a moment, as they effortless took on the jobs they were made for, before continuing on. These weren't his focus for the day.

After his interviews at the concert, he realised his researcher approach to people was likely to end up in a troublesome conversation, so asking someone to tell him the way wasn't the most appealing option. He doubted he'd find folk as nice as those Vixens had been again. He expected more people to be like that fashionista. It's why he went to check a magic-infused map. Maps didn't judge, didn't ask questions, didn't give complicated answers. He might not know any cartography, but he did know some Academia (F) and Arcana (F) and he could Focus (F) well enough, so he figured he'd be able to plot his route well enough using the map. After all, maps were made to be easily read, so this should be a walk in the park. Hopefully. Getting lost on the day he'd finally decided to sign up would not be a great start to his official career.

After minutes spent scrutinizing the magic-infused map, Deliverance would began to feel a glimmer of confidence in his understanding of the city's winding, vertical layout, reaffirming his previous confidence. The map, alive with pulsating lines of energy, lit up on the wall where it hung next to an information kiosk. A path formed from his current location to the Ethereal Luminary - a brilliant, glowing trail wending through the labyrinthine city. He would have the means to follow the light trail.

Assuming he followed the light, he would be able to navigate the city and he find it led him into many obstructed paths. People, vehicles, constructs, and more. Deliverance would need to be quick and careful to keep aware of the golden light he followed. He would find himself being required to move aside for grand carriages levitating through the air, or teleporting merchants who would appear and disappear without warning. The sounds of the city, a harmony of murmured incantations, resonating crystals, and the low hum of omnipresent magic, were almost deafening.

However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he found himself standing before a massive intersection. The route from the map was supposed to lead him straight through this area. People levitated in the air, walked, or rode, guided by floating platforms and signaled by shifting lights, as they went to wherever they were going that morning. Construction was also taking place to the side of the intersection to allow for another massive edifice of some kind to go up. But with the intensity of what was going on in the intersection caused the path of the leading light to flicker and become harder to follow until in blinked out entirely leaving Deliverance standing in the middle of a very busy street with roads and skyways leading off in several directions.

Leaving the intersection without picking a path or choosing the wrong one would risk risk getting him more lost in the city. He could try finding another information kiosk, but likely the same issue as before with the light would occur while the intersection was so busy. Either way, it was clear that his journey to the Ethereal Luminary was not going to be as simple as he had hoped. The question now was: How was he going to overcome this obstacle? Would he risk getting further lost, or dare to cross the buzzing field of construction magic?

Deliverance was not the only figure trying to navigate the complex labyrinth of Aslan's streets. Just off to his right, an elderly man was diligently working his magical stall, seemingly unfazed by the chaos around him. His focus was entirely dedicated to his craft: the creation of luminary orbs.

These orbs, each the size of a small apple, were objects of ethereal beauty. They pulsated with soft hues of blue, green, and violet, illuminating the elderly craftsman's face with their radiant light. With a patient and practiced hand, he deftly infused each orb with an intricate spell, the incantation softly whispered under his breath.

Suddenly, one of the orbs slipped from his hands, falling towards the cobblestone road beneath. Before it could shatter, however, a stream of iridescent light erupted from the old man's palm, slowing the orb's descent until it gently touched the ground. The craftsman sighed, wiping the sweat off his brow, before stooping down to retrieve his creation.

His small drama went unnoticed by the crowd around him, each individual preoccupied with their own tasks and destinations. The moment served as a reminder of the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of life in Aslan, a city where even the most ordinary tasks were touched by the extraordinary essence of magic.

Deliverance

You'd think that a city with such great magic would allow things to be a bit easier, but he still needed to take a while to figure out the map. As he was following the light trail, he was reminded of some of the navigation from his old world. At least this city had cleaner air, nicer temperatures and less chances of getting caught up in gang violence. Still, he wondered if he'd set the wrong settings, as the light led him through some troublesome paths. As magical as this city was, he was getting a little overwhelmed from it. He'd still not fully adjusted to the life here, it seemed.

The massive intersection. A point he'd avoided up until now. Too chaotic. Now he needed to go straight through. Great. Just great. He was debating what move to make next, when he got distracted by someone along the road. He spotted an orb falling, moving towards it on instinct, but stopping when he realised it wasn't needed. Still, he ended up making eye contact with the old man. Perhaps that was a sign from above.

“Those are truly a marvellous sight to behold, Ethereal even, if I may say so.” He spoke to the man, getting closer to observe the orbs more closely and see if he could figure out a bit more about what they were and how they were enchanted through his education as an [Ethereal Arcanist].

Streets of Duchy Capital: Aslan - Orb Stall

The elderly man, known as Eadric in this part of Aslan, had been a purveyor of luminary orbs for more years than he could count. His fingers, once agile and nimble, had become weathered and calloused from decades of meticulous magic work. But he didn't mind the passage of time. It brought a certain wisdom and patience that served him well in his craft.

Eadric looked up from his stall as a voice broke through the busy hum of the intersection. He squinted, making out the figure of Deliverance standing before him with questions about the orbs. He recognized the look - the hunger for knowledge and understanding, something that he himself had experienced in his youth when he first stumbled upon this magical art.

"Ah, you have an eye for magic, son," Eadric chuckled, his voice a gravelly tune that harmonized with the orchestral clamor of Aslan. "These orbs, they're more than just ethereal. They are a piece of this city's soul, a glimpse into the heart of magic itself."

While Eadric spoke, the busy intersection continued its lively dance. Portals buzzed with the ebb and flow of passengers, aerial carriages whizzed overhead, and automatons conducted their duties with mechanical precision. A group of young mages, fresh from their lessons at the Ethereal Luminary, gossiped animatedly as they passed by Eadric's stall, their laughter mingling with the city's symphony.

Eadric leaned back, surveying the youth before him with an appraising eye. "You look lost, lad. The Ethereal Luminary, is it?" He asked, tapping his fingers against his chin. "Aye, it's a bit tricky to navigate, especially for those looking for it specifically. Tell me, how comfortable are you with the city's transport portals?"

Deliverance

His [Ethereal Arcanist] knowledge hadn't given him much information on the orbs, so he decided to lean in more and back it up with [Appraisal E] as his curiosity had not yet been satiated. He was a bit surprised by the man's compliment, not really grasping what warranted it to begin with. “It doesn't take much skill to recognise masterful arcane craftsmanship.” He refuted, although the next part of the man's reply made him wonder. Part of the city's soul? A glimpse into the heart of magic itself? “I'm afraid I don't fully understand.” He admitted.

However, the next topic to be brought up made him perk up. Right. That was his goal today. He shouldn't forget that! “That is correct. I'm afraid I failed to figure out how to make the guiding maps adjust to my own pace or to figure out if they can be set to avoid busy intersections or closed off roads.” He still believed that should be an option, but regardless, it was one that he hadn't been able to access.

Upon the mention of the city's transport portals, he hesitated. “I have seen them being used a lot, but I have never dared using them myself. I've always worried I'd end up in trouble due to arriving at the wrong destination or using one that required fees I couldn't afford. I would be willing to attempt it though, should it be needed.”

Eadric's kindly eyes sparkled as he listened to the earnest young man before him, the vibrant colors of the orbs bouncing off his crinkly skin. His hearty laugh was a musical counterpoint to the hustle and bustle of the magical city. His life had been long, much of it spent amongst the impossibilities of Aslan. He remembered well the confusion of his youth before time and experience led to understanding. He chose his words carefully, aiming to assuage Deliverance's fears.

"There is much more to recognize, young man," Eadric replied warmly, gesturing at the orbs hovering around them. The orbs reflected the light from the sun above, and as an Ethereal Arcanist, Deliverance could sense the humming aura of magic around them. Each orb was encapsulating an entire spectrum of ethereal energy, resonating at a harmonic frequency. They were not just pretty trinkets, but miniature echo chambers of the city's soul, a distillation of the magical essence that permeated Aslan.

"Perhaps in time, you'll come to understand more about these orbs and our city's soul. But for now, let's focus on getting you to your destination." The old man's eyes crinkled at the edges, emphasizing the genuine nature of his smile. He tapped his staff on the ground, the sound echoing slightly more than it should've in the crowded intersection, indicating a touch of enchantment.

"Here's a simple trick with our city's transport portals, a secret known to few." Eadric leaned in closer, dropping his voice to an excited whisper. "Each portal's coded with symbols, scribed on their bases. Can you see them?" He pointed to a nearby portal, where, indeed, tiny glyphs shimmered. "If you're literate in Arcanum, you can 'request' the portal to lead you to specific destinations. It's a question of engaging with the portal, not just stepping through it. Don't worry about the fees, most of them are publicly funded, as they serve everyone in the city."

He paused, eyes twinkling, "For The Ethereal Luminary, the symbol is this..." Eadric drew a symbol in the air with his finger, an intricate geometric shape sparkling with ethereal light. "Engage the portal with this symbol in mind, and it should lead you right to the academy's doorstep. It might still require some finesse to bypass the disorientation charm, but with your knowledge, I have faith you can handle it. Remember, young man, magic responds to intent as much as to knowledge. Your determination will guide you."

The elder mage's words hung in the air, much like the orbs around them, adding an additional layer of magic to the bustling intersection. The message was clear: understanding the city wasn't just about figuring out the lay of the land; it was about engaging with the magical soul of Aslan itself.

Deliverance

The magic was ethereal in both senses of the word. Truly fascinating and magical. He was already eager to learn more about the city's soul, but realised he'd be far better off focussing on easier goals first. Such as finding the academy. Sadly enough, he wasn't entirely literate in 'Arcanum', but he did have some Arcana knowledge, so he should be able to make sense of the basics of it at least. Such as recognising the symbol shown to him and memorising it. It was a bit odd though... for something publicly funded to be so complex to use. Or was he just lagging behind more than he feared? Either way, he nodded at the explanations. “Thank you sir, that is tremendously helpful.”

He repeated the instructions to himself in silence. This symbol, keep it in mind, intend to go there when going through the portal, be mindful to the disorientation charm. “Alright, I think I've got it. Once again, thank you. Have a pleasant day, sir.” He said, giving a short bow before heading off towards the portals.

As he approached it, he kept the symbol in mind with the intent/request to go through the portal and end up at the academy's doorstep. Hopefully that worked. No. He was determined that would work. If some measly portal was enough to stop him, he wasn't worth entering the academy. He'd not fail this easily and this early. He'd get that portal to bring him where he wanted to be! With newfound conviction, he stepped through.

Duchy Capital: Aslan - Ethereal Luminary

1684464416882.png

As Deliverance emerged from the portal, he be made to witness the majesty of the structure that unfolded before him. The Ethereal Luminary, an academy of magic in all its iridescent glory, loomed in the clear spring sky. It towered above, resembling a gargantuan crystal, capturing and refracting the golden sunlight into a spectacle of vibrant hues. The ever-changing surface of the building pulsed and undulated like a living entity, echoing the cosmic energies within its walls.

The Academy grounds buzzed with the comings and goings of students and faculty, a myriad of figures weaving in and out of the towering structure. The ambience was filled with the hum of raw magic, the hushed excitement of exploration, and the underlying thrum of knowledge being pursued with passion. Deliverance would have had no clear idea of what the academy would look for feel like until that moment.

Before he could advance further, he encountered the first guardian of the academy, the gatekeeper Torum. Standing barely taller than a child, yet wider and sturdier than most men, Torum's physique belied a deceptively agile prowess. The dwarf was aged, his skin etched with a thousand lines of wisdom, his eyes shining with a spark that suggested he was much more than met the eye.

Grumbling under his breath, Torum observed the newcomer approaching from the corner of his eyes. His gaze was hardened by years of standing at the gates of the academy, but his heart still held a soft spot for the hopeful, yet clueless novices.

His eyes scanned the young man standing before him. Tall, lanky, and wide-eyed, the typical hallmarks of a newcomer. However, there was a spark in the lad's eyes, a steadfast determination that was somewhat familiar, reminiscent of many who had passed through these gates and found their place within the academy's hallowed halls.

"Well, lad," Torum started in a gruff voice, his gaze piercing, "This ain't no place for mere sightseeing. Ye look like ye've never stepped foot into a magical academy before. So tell me, why should I let ye pass? Prove to me ye have what it takes."

The gatekeeper's challenge hung in the air, adding to the pulsating energy of the Ethereal Luminary. It was a test, the first of many the academy would present to Deliverance. Now it was up to the young man to convince this dwarf, this first guardian of the academy, that he was indeed worthy.

Deliverance

He made it! Whilst his outward appearance remained unchanging, his heart made a leap of joy. These portals hadn't gotten the best of him. Good. Great! That said, how could he not stand and watch in silent awe at what was ahead of him? Truly, something so Ethereal would be bound to teach him lots about the Ethereal! All he needed to do was to get in.

A dwarf was his first obstacle. Tall as he was, he towered over the dwarf. Just in size though. He wasn't stupid enough to think he had anything to be worthy of this man's time and energy. When the Dwarf spoke up, that much was confirmed. Still, he'd been a slave long enough to know how to please people, for better or worse. First he bowed deeply. Then he spoke. “Good day, sir. My name is Deliverance. Although I may know the basics of Arcana, I do not believe that any of my current capabilities would be enough to impress the staff of this prestigious institute. All I have that might prove something, is my desire to learn more of the Arcana and the Ethereal.”

It was the honest truth. The spells he could cast right now would probably look like child's play here. Even the fact he was self-taught likely wouldn't make that any better. It's why he could only prove he was able and willing to learn much and to learn quickly. “Having merely touched the basics as a self-taught [Ethereal Arcanist], there would be no greater honour than to further pursue my studies in this institutes.”

Hopefully he'd made the right choice. To admit shortcomings and a desire to learn, rather than to just start shooting Ethereal Blight into the air to show-off his current abilities and risk making a fool out of himself.

Torum listened silently as Deliverance spoke. The dwarf's squinted eyes studied the man carefully. The boldness of honesty, the humility of admission, and the sparks of ambition in his eyes caught the old gatekeeper's attention. The man had no grand spells to display, no lineage to flaunt, only a hunger to learn - a not particularly rare quality seen at the gates of the academy.

"Aye, lad. Desire and potential, I see those in ye." Torum's gruff voice echoed amidst the constant hum of the academy. "But here, we seek more than just will. We seek the ability to think, to adapt, and to react."

Raising his gnarled staff, he swung it in the air. With a loud thrum, a shimmering, spherical shield materialized around Deliverance. The shield started contracting slowly, the radiant boundary closing in.

"Here's a challenge for ye, lad. Break this warding spell of mine and you'll have earned a chat with the academy's admissions office." His eyes twinkled with a challenge, an unspoken test of mettle. "Let's see if your potential matches your intent."

From within the encasing spell, Deliverance could see Torum, the bustling activity of the academy, and the magnificent towers of The Ethereal Luminary. His first true test had begun. Now it was up to him to show what he could do, to prove his worthiness to step into the hallowed halls of the academy.

Deliverance

Think, adapt and react? He believed he'd be able to do those things. It was good he did, as he was soon challenged to prove just that. A spherical shield? A boundary closing in. The fact it was closing in suggested it was an attempt to make him panic and rush to conclusions. Thus, it was likely that a direct attempt to violently break free in a panic was the wrong answer to this. Still, the Dwarf wouldn't give him an impossible task, hopefully, so there had to be a trick to it.

He's use [Magic Appraisal E] to quickly study the barrier and estimate how strong it was and what type of barrier it was. Then, he'd use [Ethereal Blight] to match how strong the barrier was, aiming to dissolve it by using his newfound knowledge on it to target it with the Blight affinity and without using too much force and risking self-harm. He hoped that's show a good enough combination of 'think, adapt, react' to the Dwarf.

TL; DR: He came in through the sewer lol. He's watching Deliverance conduct the test to see if he can help in some way, thereby ingratiating himself in the moment to piggyback in return.

hfhsdfhsw.pngTo say the least, his movement through the civilized places of this realm have been restricted. Daydreaming miserably of a high-spired, paved city filled with refined monsters having brunch and steady conversation or diversion, he pulled himself out of tepid water. They really should add a finer grating to the sewer. It did not take him long to replace his soiled garments with fresh replacements. He had a few possessions still with him and even bucked up enough to, while covered, accomplish some sketching or painting upon request on the street. It did not take him long at all to locate his target.

Following rumors of a magical academy, the structure of which struck him as similar to the reasonably conceived schools he was familiar with (rather than the inane structure of highly unregulated and dangerous apprenticeship), he came to this barony. It was refreshing to find civilization, and glorious to boot. Jaded somewhat by the spectacular world he made his way through for what must have been months -- and could have been years, having no real concept of how long he spent on that spectral galleon when he first reawoke, he marveled for a reasonable day or so at the magic thick in this city. Brooms flying overhead, machines made of magic in forms resembling people. He wondered faintly why they didn't employ the same creative energy designing machines more specialized, indeed a bulldozer is more efficient with moving rubble and maybe an arcane cart better for hauling goods, but he himself realized with what would have been a cold sweat that he actually had no familiarity whatsoever with magic in the same moment. There was even the occasional undead, but when he coyly bumped into one in the street, it did not seem to react. It stumbled for a moment, eyes fixed forward as though in some sort of trance, and then continued trodding forward, a bouqet under one arm and a letter in the opposite hand. It seemed to be wearing some kind of uniform as well, muted blues and white, an emblem of an envelope with wings.

Internal criticisms silenced, he located the school at length, and for a couple of days observed. There seemed to be some kind of hazing process to enter the door. It was mostly that dwarf for those days, and he had a few tricks. His favorite seemed to be a bubble closing in on its victim. With dismay, Liu thought for a moment that magic was not as much of an academic pursuit as he thought it would be. Less the understanding of a cosmic force and more an extreme version of a military academy, he reckoned. Whatever the case, his best shot in a thousand or more miles of understanding his own body was in that building.

But he probably couldn't hack it. He lacked in a basic understanding of magic. Was it in everything? Only living things? What does it feel like?

Ruminating for a moment while a golden haired youth approached that scool's gate, he reasoned faintly, he might as well look for someone for whom the test is not going well and bail them out. Sitting in a cafe chair with a breakfast pastry sitting on his plate, he observed. It is a remote possibility that he could extort them in the moment to go along with some half-assed story about their ownership of him. Otherwise, he might have to seek the basics of magic elsewhere, and come back in a different garb, maybe adjust his height a little. Really, it's difficult to tell skeletons apart from each other.

His attention slid faintly back to this gold character, checking on the individual's progress through the test.

Torum watched as Deliverance quickly took in the situation. The dwarf's stony features softened into an approving nod as Deliverance put to use his skills, studying the barrier before attempting to break free. Then Deliverance managed to dissolve the barrier without resorting to brute force. It was a show of cleverness, restraint, and control, just what Torum had hoped to see.

"Aye, lad, that'll do it," Torum grumbled, his voice echoing across the entranceway. His gruff exterior did a poor job of hiding the pride in his voice. "You've got a good head on your shoulders, Deliverance, and a keen sense for the Arcane. You'll fit right in here."

He looked Deliverance over once more before adding, "Although, it seems you're lacking something that many young arcanists have - a familiar. They can be quite useful companions on your journey in mastering the Arcane. But don't worry, the academy can probably help you with that."

Torum's eyes flicked to a Liu's general location. Torum raised an eyebrow, his appraising eyes able to spot a spark of potential when he sees it. "There's a chance for everyone here, even for those who think they're out of their depth," he mumbled to himself, the gate immediately behind him opening by itself to allow Deliverance to enter.

Deliverance

A slight smile adorned his face when he figured it out and was complimented for it. “Thank you, sir. I am honoured by your compliments.” He said, with a short bow in thanks. He was a bit surprised at the mention of a familiar. He hadn't even considered such a thing at all. Still, if the academy could help with that, he'd probably be alright, right? “That is a relief, thank you.” He said once again, now to thank for the reassurance. As the gate opened, he was eager to enter. “Have a nice day sir.” He politely stated, before heading in.

Where was he meant to go again? Right. The admission's office. He looked around to see if there were any signs or indications of where that was at. If not, he'd ask one of the nearby students or fly-by witches; “Excuse me, could you please point me to the admissions office?” in the hopes that someone else knew.

1684797820272.pngHoping for some kind of hint, the vacuous voids where his eyes should be were trained on the altercation. There was the bubble. Gold eyes flitted around the scene; maybe he felt something fuzzy over the surface of his bones, maybe it was placebo. An ethereal, clearly magical substance filled the inner surface of the bubble and then the dome faded out of existence. Liu studied the end of the scene for a moment, his fingers tracing across his chin subtly. Yep, no clue. Considering his prior conclusion that skeletons were probably difficult to tell apart, he quickly scrapped the idea of trying to rope some poor stranger into his goals since it was a longer shot than trying the test himself. He couldn't quite hear what they were saying. With an inner sigh, he rose from his table, adjusting and smoothing his black clothing. The nearby waitress, squat, blonde, suntanned, nodded toward him smiling. He nodded back cordially, his face obscured by a veil. Her smile faded into uneasy confusion when she looked to the table to find his payment and tip accompanying the untouched tea and empty plate.

In disbelief at his own recklessness, he looked either way for a tromping golem or passing carriage and dodged through the criss-crossing stream of pedestrians. In a magical city, his veiled appearance was thankfully not so unusual. Or so he hoped. Mystique was either part of a magician's brand or some traditional garb often enough that it was something to glance at but not act suspiciously toward. Clenching his left hand in trepidation, he headed straight from the street toward the dwarf with his usual upright, formal posture. He forced himself to kindle something like bravery in the moment he stepped off of the street, planning to come clean about his... degree of flesh. After all, it's a wizard's academy, he's liable to be vaporized instantly upon walking through door, so they'd find out regardless. That being said, it also would not be his first impression -- if he could help it. No, instead his first impression would be something everyone can bond over.

Appraoching the dwarf much like many others have, indeed looming for this skeleton was once wrapped in elf, he waved his greeting, enunciating,
"good morning keeper. How are you on this beautiful morning?" while still veiled.

The dwarf gatekeeper, Torum, watched as Liu approached. The dwarf likely couldn’t see Liu's true appearance. Not that it was unusual to encounter all kinds of beings in a place of such magical renown, but the gatekeeper's curiosity was piqued.

“Well met, traveler,” Torum responded in his gruff voice, squinting at the figure. He didn't return the pleasantries. Instead, he straightened up and addressed the newcomer directly. “Who might your master be, then?”

His question, while addressed to Liu, echoed through the entrance plaza, loud enough to be heard by Deliverance who had only just passed through the gate moments ago.

Meanwhile, the campus grounds of the academy were a spectacle of their own. A sense of enchantment and academia interwove seamlessly within the academy's bounds. Buildings seemed to sprout like colossal crystals from the earth, shimmering and shifting as if they were alive. Their edifices reflected hues of every conceivable color, sometimes appearing solid and at other times ethereal as they mirrored the moods of the sky.

Hovering broomsticks streaked across the sky, leaving trails of twinkling stardust. Witches and wizards of all races, young and old, were scattered around, engaged in hushed conversations, animated debates, or solitary study. Some manipulated elemental energies with a flick of their wrist, while others levitated objects, and a few sat with eyes closed in deep meditation, perhaps communicating with unseen entities or traveling to astral realms.

In the distance, the sound of pages being turned echoed from an enormous library, a sanctuary of knowledge that towered above many other buildings. Its countless windows flickered with the warm light of candle flames, promising a trove of wisdom inside.

The smell of ancient parchment, mingled with the fresh scent of nature, wafted through the air, reminding everyone that this was a place where the old and the new, the natural and the supernatural, coexisted. The academy wasn’t just a place of learning; it was a living testament to the magical world, a realm where wonders never ceased.

As Deliverance queried the passing students for directions, he was met with a variety of reactions. Some, too engrossed in their own conversations or personal musings, barely noticed his existence. Others gave him a quick smile or nod, acknowledging his presence but too hurried to provide any assistance.

Eventually, a young witch dressed in a robe adorned with celestial symbols paused her conversation with a group of friends. Noticing Deliverance's earnest query, she offered a friendly smile. With a twirl of her wand, she conjured a miniaturized version of the academy, complete with tiny buildings and winding paths.

“First time here, huh?” she inquired, her tone warm. She pointed to a particularly grand building in the model that seemed to pulse with magical energy. "That’s where you're heading: the Admissions Office. Straight down this path, make a left at the Fountain of Fates, and you can't miss it."

As she spoke, the path lit up on the model, guiding Deliverance to his destination. Once she was done, she gave him an encouraging nod, before letting the magical model dissipate into a flurry of light. With a wave of her hand and a whispered incantation, she returned to her previous conversation, leaving Deliverance with the knowledge he sought.

Deliverance

He heard someone be addressed by the Dwarf behind him, but decided not to intervene. Truth be told, having lived as a slave for as long as he had, he hated the idea of suddenly having someone in such a position work for him. If he'd be forced to pick a familiar at one point or another, he'd probably see if he could pick some animal, maybe a construct? Either way, not something that had a fully functional mind of its own. Besides, he was already forced to drain what little social energy he had at a rapid pace. First trying to get here, then passing the Dwarves' test, now trying to find his way to the Admissions Office. He didn't think he'd have energy for more.

It's why he kept looking around, a mixture of silent awe and feeling lost washing over him. The buildings were magnificent to witness. The many broomsticks used really showed how magic was intertwined in this place. The sight of the distant library made his heartbeat rise. Oh, how he'd love to just spent entire days in there. Lost in books of wisdom... Ah, he shouldn't get ahead of himself. He wasn't even fully accepted here yet.

Sadly enough, his social energy meter kept being drained. Many people were too busy, to hurried or simple not caring enough to aid him. It was a little worrisome. It's why he gave a genuine smile in relief when some young witch finally aided him. He carefully studied the map she showed him. “Thank you, thank you very much.” He spoke, a lot of sincere gratitude audible as he was relieved his quest wouldn't end stumbling through the place for an eternity without figuring out where to go.

Now with an idea where to go, he continued to head towards his destination. Straight down the path, making a left at the Fountain of Fates.

1684886522566.png"Well," he started, his comportment loosening as the gentleman jumped to business without hesitation. Awkwardly, he produced the croissant he bought across the way and looked down at it, and held it in limbo next to his body for a moment. It felt weird to offer it now since the guy immediately put the wall down. After a moment of thought he eventually just barreled forward in the conversation, chuckling emptily, he offered "the fine arts! For one... I..." eventually his bubble burst and he awkwardly held out the croissant. His shoulders relaxed into the shape of someone who was shut down while making their first impression.

Holding out the croissant, he sighed, "do you want this? I do not need to eat," and continued, "and I have nobody to call master," then, an idea kindling in his empty skull, he continued, "which is why I made my way here. I'm sure you can tell that I'm," he then silently waved his hand over the front of his body as if to present himself, "I merely need to learn, and I will achieve this. If I have to bow my head for one thousand years for the chance, I'll do so" adding "I have the time after all," under his breath. His words were bold and fell starkly from his mouth, clear as ice. Jokingly, he added, "at the very least I can still make tea."

In the grand tradition of magical places, the Academy grounds were not only a feast for the eyes but also for the imagination. The walkway, subtly imbued with its own gentle magic, twinkled underfoot, guiding Deliverance down the path and around the fabled Fountain of Fates, which was known to whisper prophecies to those willing to listen closely.

Beyond the fountain, grand structures of stone and wood, shrouded in ivy and mystical emblems, emerged like forest titans. Should Deliverance move forward through an archway, its keystone engraved with the image of an open book, a symbol of the boundless knowledge held within these grounds. With the spell-struck map's aid, he would be able to locate a cobblestone path veering to the left, winding around a towering oak whose branches hummed with an energy that spoke of ancient wisdom.

Finally, he arrived at a stone-clad building adorned with stained glass windows and crystals like many of the others, its facade glowing in the morning sun. This was the Admissions Office, its presence felt like a comforting nudge, a silent invitation to all the unexplored mysteries within compared to the hustle and bustle at the front gate.

If Deliverance stepped inside, the office was warm, filled with the scent of old parchment and fresh ink. Behind a large oak desk sat a kindly looking woman, her spectacles perched on the end of her nose as she poured over an assortment of paperwork. This was Mrs. Bristlecone, a fixture of the Academy known for her sharp wit and surprising patience. As Deliverance entered, she looked up and smiled, her eyes sparkling with a warm welcome. "Ah, another new face," she said, her voice carrying a melodic lilt. "Welcome to the Academy. How may I assist you today?"

Back at the front gate,

Torum eyed the skeletal figure for a moment longer, his gaze cold and unwavering. There was an air of suspicion about him as he studied Liu, but it was quickly replaced by an expression of grudging acknowledgement. He grumbled, a deep, resonant sound echoing off his chest plate, before speaking in his characteristic gruff voice.

"I'll be honest with ye, I've met a lot o' free monsters in my time, an' not one of 'em behaved anything like ye," he began, his eyes never leaving the veiled figure. "I've seen 'em in a blood frenzy, all fangs and claws and death. But ye? Ye offer me a croissant and ask to learn." His rough laughter echoed through the air. "That's new."

He took the croissant from Liu's hand, giving it a curious glance before placing it to the side. "Ye see, Liu, there's a natural order to things, and monsters generally don't fit into that order. But ye...ye're something different, I can see that."

Torum leaned back against the stone gate, his eyes softening slightly. "Here's my advice to ye, bone man. Look for your lessons elsewhere for now. This place, this academy, it's a touchy place, and ye might not be the best fit. Not yet, at least."

He crossed his arms over his chest plate, his gaze unwavering. "But ye've got potential, that much is clear. And ye're not like the other monsters I've met. That alone is worth somethin'. So, off ye go. But remember, we might not be as welcoming next time."

With that, he stepped aside, making it clear that Liu's time at the gate had come to an end.

Deliverance

As he walked across the twinkling path, he resist the urge to study the Fountain of Fates, as he'd already been losing a lot of time just to get here. He'd have to save it for later. He did, however, stop momentarily to marvel at the large structures. If it wasn't for him having a clear destination he needed to head towards, he'd likely be able to get lost wandering around in awe for ages. He followed the path towards the office, witnessing the towering oak and once again fighting off the urge to stay and study it for longer than he had time for. As he eventually arrived at the Admissions Office, he was a bit surprised. The feeling he got from this was far different than he expected. He'd expected some trial again, not a welcoming feeling.

Perhaps that was to throw people off? Make them feel welcome, get them to relax, then shock them with another trial? Yes. It was best to assume as much and stay on guard. It's why he didn't let up his guard, even after Mrs. Bristlecone greeted him kindly. Still, he did reply as politely as he could, starting with a bow. “Thank you kindly ma'am, I was hoping to sign up for the academy and wondered what my options would be.” Unless there was going to be another trial, the latter would be the final hurdle. He had no wealth or status, so only his talent, or rather, his potential, could get him into the academy. He'd convinced the Dwarf, but would he be able to convince this woman as well? Kind as she was, he was getting a bit nervous. Would they accept someone like him to begin with? He certainly hoped so...

Pondering openly for a moment, he replied carefully, "the natural order... you're right," he gestured toward the dwarf with an open palm from his side -- slowly and carefully so as to not imply any sort of attack -- "that is a splendid suggestion as to what I should remedy first. You have my undying gratitude for not erasing me. If ever you come to know of me elsewhere, I would be known as Fei Liu, the Unbroken -- seek me and I will provide what I can. Enjoy the rest of your day," he bade him gently, turning and walking down the street with a pep in his step. Just a little insight would reveal that it was mostly out of fear. That went better than he expected. His steps took him through the city, over wonderful paving and sublime architecture brimming with magic, to a duller, quieter place, dirtier and harboring shadows. Back to his initial entry point. This time, he employed his speed and held his clothing above the water so that they did not become waterlogged at any point.

It was clear that even in a place he imagined would be on the edge of conventional culture, which interacts daily with infinite powers in the world, he was not particularly wanted for the form he inhabits. How much longer could he escape his peril with courtesy? How far from civilized and kind places would he have to wander to find somewhere he could just settle down for a time? Even in living people, it is other living people mutually maintain some degree of sanity. He prayed for a moment that he could maintain his in the face of such isolation. With his uncanny speed, he found a high hill overlooking the city in its high walls and glittering far off splendor. Taking some time, he sat down by the road and set up his supplies, sketching the view while the sun arced high overhead and insects buzzed from the vibrant sea of bobbing, wildflower-dappled grass around him.

"Ah, I see," Mrs. Bristlecone said, her eyes twinkling with understanding. "The gatekeepers do have a knack for testing potential students in their own unique way. If you've passed their scrutiny, then you've certainly demonstrated a remarkable degree of resourcefulness and potential."

With the flick of her wrist, she summoned a unique scroll from the pile on her desk. It was not as much an application as it was a tool for measurement—a scroll imbued with spells to assess the magical prowess of the one who dared touch it.

"Touch this scroll, dear," she encouraged Deliverance, a smile playing on her lips. "It measures the potential within you. It's not a test, not like with the gatekeepers. This scroll will simply give us a glimpse into your magical aptitude."

Deliverance

He was relieved to hear this woman's kind words. He'd been fully convinced there was going to be another test. Honestly, the gatekeeper's challenge had been somewhat challenging, but had that really been enough? Possibly. He was just starting to feel confident again when she took out a scroll and told him to touch it. How was that not a test? She said it wasn't, but testing his magical aptitude was literally what she said it'd do! So he'd be tested again. He took took a deep breath. He had some magical aptitude. He knew some Ethereal Magic. It might not be impressive, but it should be the bare minimum or higher, right? Right. Surely. He touched the scroll for a bit, waiting for any sign of it finishing, before looking at the woman expectantly, hoping the results would be enough.

Come to think of it, he also recalled he was meant to ask about something. “Before I forget, I was told the academy would be capable of aiding me with obtaining a familiar? I'm not sure if my lack of having one influences tests like these as well, but the Gatekeeper did mention its importance.”

“Most remarkable indeed,” Mrs. Bristlecone murmured, her eyes never leaving the glowing scroll. It hummed with an intensity she’d seldom witnessed in her years overseeing admissions. Only a handful of students, in the Academy's long history of thousands, had demonstrated such immense potential. And now, this young man before her, Deliverance, had joined those exclusive ranks.

She found herself glancing up at Deliverance, her gaze softening as she took in his humble demeanor. He didn't quite seem to grasp the magnitude of what he'd just achieved, the extraordinary potential he'd shown. To possess a Grade S potential... It was akin to unlocking the ability to achieve feats of magic that were often dreamt of, but seldom witnessed, feats that, for most, remained shrouded in myth and legend.

“Dear Deliverance,” she started, her voice full of gentle assurance. “You possess a potential that’s been seen only a handful of times in the last half-century at the academy. Grade S potential, to be precise. It implies that with careful and diligent study, there’s very little in the realm of magic that will be beyond your reach.”

Her eyes met his, warm and encouraging, the soft light from the glowing scroll casting dancing shadows across her kindly face. "Your potential... It's extraordinary, my dear. Extraordinary indeed." She said, leaning back in her seat, her eyes sparkling with delight and intrigue. She was curious to see what this remarkable young man would achieve, what great feats he could accomplish, given the right guidance and tools.

Her voice still full of that gentle assurance. “The matter of a familiar... it is not an immediate necessity for every student. We believe that such a bond should happen organically, when you and the creature or entity are ready to form such a connection. However, when the time comes, rest assured, we'll provide guidance and support in this process."

Her eyes met his, sparkling with a hint of fond reminiscence. "Some of the most successful bonds between mage and familiar have come when least expected. I would advise you to be open, patient, and let the magic guide you. The academy can provide you with opportunities, but it is your journey, Deliverance. Your potential is vast and rare, and it may draw unexpected creatures to you.”

She finished her sentence with a knowing smile, ready to usher in the next phase of the conversation. “Now, let's discuss your studies further...”

“So tell me, Deliverance,”
she continued, her voice steady. “What are your aspirations? What do you hope to achieve during your time here at the academy?”
