Overview
SYNOPSIS
In the skies above Louisianna in early 2024, a strange aerial phenomenon causes the disappearance of a passenger flight and inflicts observers with a strange sickness. In the aftermath of this event, the US Government deploys the national guard and declares Tammany Parish a special exclusion zone while the cause and nature of the events are investigated. Meanwhile, some survivors of the strange skyborne affliction begin to manifest extraordinary and supernatural capabilities, an occurrence that coincides with strange sightings of passengers from the missing Flight 248.
Those who manifest abilities become known as Ascendants, named for the Ascendant Factor, a genetic aberration acquired from the aforementioned sickness. The reality of superhumans blindsides the American public, putting more pressure on the federal government's investigation. As a result, the special exclusion zone shifts operational focus to containment with nothing allowed in or out without express government authorization. Similarly, the display or utilization of 'aberrant capabilities' becomes expressly prohibited within the special exclusion zone, with violators being detained indefinitely in internment camps located deep within the Lousiana wetlands.
Strange happenings continue in Tammany Parish even long after the first event and establishment of the exclusion zone. Dubbed 'immanence phenomena' these happenings often take the form of new instances of lights in the sky, impossible events, sightings of people who shouldn't exist, and most notoriously, violent storms with anomalous properties. Using the strange by-product of these events, a crystal-like material known as Uridium, the US government has managed to engineer a weaponized compound known as ARC-1, which causes allergic reactions of varying severity in Ascendant individuals, leading many to believe the Government knows far more than they officially claim.
What is the government really doing in Tammany Parish? What were the lights and the sickness that arrived suddenly in early March? What happened to Flight 248? Despite the odds, some still seek the truth...
RP INFORMATION
Ascendant: The Conspiracy will be a semi-lit to lit RP. Sample posts will not be required, but are highly encouraged and will greatly improve your chances of having your application accepted. Character sheets, Lore, and OOC will be posted once enough interest in this RP has been shown, so please do sound off in the replies if you'd like to participate.
This RP will follow a plot with a loose 'pantser'-like structure, with each pre-determined plot point having little to no pre-existing path between them. Getting to each beat in the story will be a creative, collaborative effort. Characters are not required to be in the same place at the same time and may pursue branching and overlapping paths of the story at different times in different places, as well as subplots and character arcs.
A detailed incident report will be posted along with the Lore and OOC to give a clearer and solid picture of the timeline of events leading up to the story's present.

ASCENDANT (Type 1)
Open
Type 1 is the most common magnitude of Ascendant. An estimated 60% of all Ascendant Individuals are Type 1. Their allergy to the ARC-1 compound tends to be mild at worst, and they generally show no discernable adverse reaction to immanence phenomena. Their aberrant capability tends to be singular in nature and simple, though effective. Examples include Hypercognition, Phasing, Super Sense(s), Danger Sense, Empathy, and Lie Detection.
ASCENDANT (Type 2)
Open
Type 2 is an uncommon but potent magnitude of Ascendant, accounting for roughly 35% of Ascendant Individuals. Their allergy to the ARC-1 compound tends to be moderate to debilitating, with mild adverse reactions to immanence phenomena in their proximity. Most often, their aberrant capabilities are far more extraordinary and unexplainable than those of Type 1. Rarely, they may exhibit multiple related abilities. Examples include Telepathy, Substance Mimicry, Animal Control, Super Strength, Invisibility, and different kinds of elemental kinesis.
ASCENDANT (Type 3)
Limited
Type 3 is the most dangerous and rarest magnitude of Ascendant. Only around 5% of Ascendant Individuals fall within this classification. Their allergy to the ARC-1 compound is always debilitating, and often fatal. Rather than having any reaction, the presence of Type 3 individuals seems to exacerbate the severity of immanence phenomena. Aberrant capabilities of Type 3 individuals are often immensely dangerous and defy everything understood about the Ascendant Factor. Examples include Temporal Manipulations, Flight, Mind Control, Precognition, Teleportation, and Power Replication.
MUNDANE
Open
Only 10% of the individuals that contracted the mysterious sickness on the night Flight 248 disappeared acquired the Ascendant Factor. Death was a far more likely outcome, but you survived without a single long-lasting effect. You may be as normal as you were before the incident, but you're trapped in the exclusion zone just like everyone else, Ascendant or otherwise. However, a lack of aberrant capabilities doesn't disqualify you from the search for truth.

Rule One
All of RPNation's rules apply to this roleplay.
Rule Two
Activity is ideally one post per week or more. If you are unable to meet this quota every once and a while, don't sweat it. If it becomes a frequent occurrence, you may be removed from the story. If something comes up, contact me to let me know what's up and I will do my best to work with you. All decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, you may leave the RP at any time for any reason no questions asked, all I request is that you notify me as much in advance as possible.

Characters will be accepted by application, and not on a first come first serve basis. Once enough interest has been shown for this RP, I will post character sheets and link them in this OP. In the event of an opening, I will refer to existing applications before making a call for new applicants.

Be respectful of others in OOC, and be agreeable in your IC conduct. You don't have to be a nice character or anything like that, but please do not godmod or strongarm any story details.
