Artifact 5 Key

In Oadenols Codex they suggest an example is a key that when used to open a door, the doorway can lead to any other door in creation.

I was wondering about this and curious if it the key would be able to open doors to things like the Imperial Manse or penetrate Celestial/Solar circle sorcery shields. Thoughts?

I would say no to having it open a door that is magic or warded.  It would make bypassing things like that far too easy, unless the key is a five dot or a N/A level.

Someone saw Reloaded, hmm?

I've been toying with this key idea some more. What if this was a backup key to the Imperial Manse? Entrusted to some 3rd party so that in the event that the Solars in charge of the Imperial Manse became compromised, that the key could be used... Except as some kind of side effect the key ended up being able to open *anything.*

Seems more like something a 1st Age Night Caste would have made to spy on his 'friends'.

They are always looking at my Lunar, watching were it goes.   Asking questions abouts it.  Yes my precious we will watch them instead.

I don't know if I like that idea. Having a key that can open a door and it leads anywhere is fine. But the idea that this happened on accident seems a bit too far fetched for me, even in Exalted. And especially with an effect like you're talking about here. At least if you want the user to have any control over where he goes. If it's totally random, then that's another issue altogether, and one which I have less problems with. Particularly if it's a First Age artifact - then it could be that time had degraded the artifact. But if the user has no control over where he goes, then is it a level 5 artifact?

IIRC, in 2E corebook, there's a key (artifact level 4) that opens any door and makes it lead to Malfeas. So I guess a level 5 key artifact would indeed lead to anywhere in creation...

Although, mechanically, I would consider that as an "attack". Thus, a defense (Celestial/Solar circle sorcery shields or other artefacts) of equal value would suffice to ward it off.

I'm not too sure of what I'm saying, though... Does that make sense?

My core rulebook has no such artifact.

And furthermore I would not call any of the variants of the key presented here an artifact. In my eyes all of them have a huge "plot device" sign on them.

I'm not saying this is what the artifact should do. What I had a problem with was the idea that HTH had of a key that opened the Imperial Manse but, as a side effect, it could now open any door in Creation. That's all I was saying.

:-)

I think you have a good point, that if it was a "side effect" then it should just randomly open any door. I think more to the point for plot reasons, it wasn't supposed to have that power, but *someone* or *something* gave it that power. Perhaps the God of Keys?
