So, my character is generally wearing armor these days when he knows he's going into combat, and the mobility penalty is getting on our nerves.  I'd rather he be able to dodge, because not having to have his sword out means he gets to do more two-gun stuff.

So I think I found a way around it (especially combined with better-quality equipment).

I bounced it off my ST, he said he'd have to think about it.

By specific type of armor, it could work.

But if you wear armor you must have some dots in Resistance... Ever thought of buying resistance charms ???

They rock.

I'd suggest a type of armour.

But then again, I'm playing a character at the moment who managed to sneak a 2 dot Dodge:Combat specialty past his ST, so don't mind me...

I think its a good idea, watch the movie Excalubur, and you can see what someone can do in well fitting armor.

Though the armor they wore in the movie might not have been to actual spec, these guys still moved along quite well [in a day before there were good light wieght plastics to play around in.

Part of my justification is that if you live in body armor on a daily basis, it stops impairing you quite so much.

I have beef with a lot of game systems for how they model the effects of body armor, and I didn't really before I spent two years wearing the stuff nearly daily.

If 'Fighting in Armor' is considered a vailid specialty for Martial Arts, or 'Unarmed' even, I fail to see where this is any different of a situation, personally. So yeah, I'd allow it. Someone catches you with your trousers down, and well, you're not gonna get it, so it's not like you're cheezing out like Chaka did...'Combat' indeed. Sheesh.

Each to there own but I would not allow it. It messes around to much with the games balance. One of the main potencies of artefact armour is reduced mobility penalty. One of the main benefits of superior+ armour is that it can be built with reduced MP. I think there are Charms that reduce MP too.

Having a specialty do this leaves a hole in the balance of the game, devaluing charms, treasure, and craftsmanship.

Hey, it's not entirely my fault, my GM never called me on it. Don't worry, I'm feeling guilty enough to change it to multiple opponents nect time we're playing...

I'm at Dodge 4, Dex 3, Essence 3 = Dodge DV 5

Even with three dots in specialty, it only cancels out 2 points of mobility penalty.

If your Dodge/Dex/Essence total is odd, it cancels out 1 point of mobility penalty.

Still cost 9xp, which is more than a single charm if it is favored.

That's like arguing that the melee specialty "Daiklaves" devalues high-accuracy artifact weapons.

Yeah, change it to something less munchkin like "After 2nd tick of combat" or "When last Saturday was not a summer equinox".

By the way, I'd go for the "armor type" specialization. Dodge:in heavy armor seems just fine to me.

Reducing mob penalty goes beyond adding on some die. Thats why Fine equipment cannot reduce a MP. You need at least Superior.

But I dont think this is some game breaking change you are making. Its border line, but on the wrong side of the border for me is all.

Assuming you are a solar... there is a charm in print that allows you to reduce mobility/fatigue penalties, why not just use that and do something useful with your specialization?

Because that's not yet a good assumption.

It will be, and someday I'll have the eps to buy that charm three (three deep, Armored Scout's Invigoration) but for now, it's considerably cheaper to buy the Specialization.

And with the Charms, you'll have a higher Dodge pool with your armor on, so, unless you're using Charms that specifically forbid armor, you'll always want to fight in armor, since you'll have no drawbacks and actually have more reasons to wear it than the soak value.

What?

Lose two dice to fighting when not wearing armor?

Hell, no!

Specialties are about specializing the way you fight. white-wolf took the increased soak into account, with the return disadvantage of having a little less dodge for heavier armors.

like someone else already pointed out, it barely compromises for the mobility penalty of armors, and seeing that something like "when unarmed" is allowed as well, I wouldn't think of it as overpowered or anything.. just a little boost to your abilities, which is perfectly acceptable for the 9xp you've spent..

I will admit it took me a little time to ponder about it, GG :-D
