The Book Thief is really good.

Gail Carriger's books have great descriptions and dialogue and I really enjoy them. If you decide to read them I would start with Etiquette and Espionage and the rest of the Finishing school series.

A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner (Both by Khaled Hosseini) are both books I near sobbed reading. I also recommend Tuesdays With Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven (Mitch Albom); these had me dazed for days, and though there aren't tons of characters or actions and all that jazz, the characters you do meet are rich and the plots are so, so good.
