This wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't supposed to happen.

It was supposed to be a harmless (okay not completely) trip down to the woods, hunting down the dragon, maybe taking a few dumb photos with it and busting back out to the dormitories. They'd laugh about it, joke about it, tell stories about it. Maybe even place a few bets to earn some easy cash but not this.

There were countless times where Keith's plans go wayward and off the charts of the expectant but never had there been a scenario where he just couldn't--

The air around them dropped levels, creating a chill which made him feel sick. He felt his body freeze as he sat in place. A hauntingly familiar feeling crept up the back of his neck, lodging itself in the back of his throat.

Ah.

This again.

The memories came like flashes: Cold hands around his neck. The smashing of something made of glass. People yelling. Suitcases and a taxi parked at the curb of their house. The television blaring green, blue and red. White noise. Voices piercing, arms raising. The flash of green light and nothing.

He could vaguely hear Emma yelling in panicked voices besides him. Something about running towards the group and needing to get out of there.

Getting out of here sounded good but Keith couldn't find the strength in his legs to stand. The dementors were coming closer, probably only a few meters away. He had to move, had to get Emma to move.

So he wills himself to stand in the corner of his eye he sees the dementors suddenly change course, heading towards Sebastian who was singled out, but even he manages to defend himself with a single beam of pure, white light.

"Emma run," Keith feels the words leave his mouth as he pushes the brunette towards Phyrun and Penelope, towards safety. He doesn't take no for an answer and he doesn't look away when the dementors now change targets, moving towards them.

He could almost hear her voice mocking into her ear as the feelings become so strong that memories almost seem tangent.

"Run," he says forcefully this time, gripping his wand and moving it in a casting motion. It isn't the Patronus spell. He's tried casting that multiple times when he was alone, away from the sight of others, especially so after he discovers that rotten Blutmond can do it, but he couldn't.

He chooses instead to cast a spell he's all the more familiar with. A swipe and a chant, his lips mouth, "Ignis clypheus." A surge of blue halos his body as he darts down the crater, dashing from the dementors, passing through the invisible barrier which only keeps things from going out and not coming in, and straight for the burning sphere of fire.

Most spells were ineffective against dragons. Keith was about to find out if his was too.

The patronus kept the cold away but the phantoms of memories were still there, still making it difficult for him to remember that there were others there. He had to protect the other students, had to make sure they made it out alive but the largest part of him was vehemently fighting sending his owl patronus out to do its job.

Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, the words made it past his lips as he met the patronus's gaze. "Circle the group," he softly commanded, even as he raised his wand to guide it. "Set down a ward against the dementors."

It had only been wistful thinking to counter the events he was still trying to deny, still trying to forget, a way to protect many without having to remain in complete focus, and there was no other time to try like the present.

The owl patronus opened its wings and took off. He brought his wand up as it reached the front of the group and banked right. He followed it with his wand, magic pouring into the active spell. It wasn't till nearly a quarter of the way around before it actually started to work. There, faint on the ground, was the beginnings of a very strong warding ring. The dementors that tried to edge towards it after the patronus had passed could not cross and the more complete the circle became, the less effect the dementors had.

The only downside was that it was draining.

In fact, he started to fear he wouldn't have enough magic for this as he found himself straining to keep the patronus going, to keep the foundation of the ward solid till it was complete.

The patronus crossed the starting point of the circle and his knees hit the dirt as he sucked in as much air as he could, gasping for breath. His entire body was shaking, his magic nearly extinguished, and it was a feat just to keep from passing out.

The owl patronus returned to him only to disappear, washing warmth and good feelings over him that helped ease the urge to pass out but not by much. He brought his head up and did a quick head count aa best he could. He had been certain he had gotten most of them in the ward circle.

But then there was a thought, a terrible thought, and he looked over to where Anderson and one of the girls had been to see Anderson going in the wrong direction coated in a spell, and outright terror seizes him.

"KEITH!" he bellowed in fear, shoving at the ground to get upright and follow after but his legs didn't hold and he crashed to his hands and knees, nearly planting his face in the forest floor.

Belladonna CobenBelladonna stared at the other members in her group as they began following the Ravenclaw's orders, shock and repulsion eminent in her face. The audacity. How dare they go against direct orders? Granted, the group had never officially granted her the title of leader. But still, even with their small brains and limited intellectual capacity, they had to know Belladonna was the best choice for a leader. Yes, she was irrational, bossy, and couldn’t care less about what people like Keith, Eli or Aivree had to say, but she was far more intelligent and cunning than all of them combined. In her eyes, her plan was flawless, and they were all missing an incredible opportunity to drive the dragon away.

“Idiots,” she muttered, feeling slightly hurt they were ignoring her leadership skills.

Sebastian’s response that followed her remarks were shocking, to say the least. She’d expected him to fly into another rage and insult everyone, maybe even hex a few members of the group. That sort of outburst, Belladonna could deal with. She’d seen it before, as they often disagreed and anger seemed to be Sebastian’s favorite (if not only) emotion. Once some time had passed and Sebastian had time to relax, the outburst was forgotten and everyone moved on with their lives. Belladonna didn’t enjoy being insulted by her best friend, but she understood the fact that people often said things they didn’t mean when they weren’t in control of their emotions. Thus, Sebastian’s insults could very easily be ignored by the platinum haired Slytherin.

This, however, was different.

The rant she’d been expecting came in the form of a simple comment. A short but scalding remark that resonated within Belladonna. She turned to face her friend, expecting to find him steaming with anger, maybe even pointing his wand at her or someone else. Instead, she found the face of a defeated man. At first, she didn’t understand why he was so hurt. All she’d done was threaten to leave him, which she’d done before.

Until it clicked.

She was a traitor.

The knowledge pulled her back for a moment, so much so she didn’t react to the dragon’s strange behavior and whatever stupid plan Keith and Emma were up to. Ever since the beginning of the school year, she’d been siding with Penelope and the people she considered enemies in the past. She’d defended Penelope in the bar, shielded Mila from Sebastian’s insults that very morning (while also throwing some attacks against Mila, but that wasn’t important), and had been siding with Penelope, Emma, and even Eli after they’d been insulted by Sebastian. By constantly helping out the rest of the group, she’d completely turned her back on her best friend. The only one who was truly loyal to her and the one who’d been through everything with her since they were children running around pureblood celebrations thrown by their families. She’d thrown away her loyalty for her friend in the hopes she would be able to seduce Penelope.

It suddenly became very clear to Belladonna that Penelope and Sebastian were polar opposites. Siding with one, could mean losing the other. The fact that she didn’t know whether she was more loyal to Sebastian or Penelope terrified her. As someone who valued loyalty so much, she’d always known who she was loyal to. Whether it was her family, her friends, or the Dark Lord. Now? A question that would’ve been so easy to answer months ago now seemed like the most complicated dilemma in the universe. An overwhelming feeling of guilt and remorse settled deep within Belladonna. She, however, remained completely silent. Not able to find the right words to apologise to her friend.

The distant howling and sudden cold that arrived finally got her to stop staring at her friend and focus on the horde of dementors approaching the group. Fear gripped her like it never had before, making her feel as if her heart had completely stopped, before making it beat a hundred times faster than what it was supposed to. The hooded creatures had always terrified her, mostly because of her parent’s ramblings of their close encounters with dementors during their stay in Azkaban. Before said creatures took all traces of sanity from their minds.

Belladonna quickly pointed her wand at the dementors and began walking backwards, desperately trying to remember how her Defence Against the Dark Arts book described the patronus charm; which she had never attempted to perform before.

“Expecto patronum!” Belladonna shouted, trying her hardest to concentrate on her happiest memories. Running around the Rosier manor with Val and Sebastian as children, winning duels against strong opponents in the dueling club, working with Emma until midnight for a cure, holding Penelope’s hand and carelessly flirting in the hallways. All to no avail. All that came out of her wand was a minuscule, pathetic speck of white light that paled in comparison to what the others could create.

“Expecto patronum! Expectro patronum! Fucking work!” She screamed, now desperate. Walking backwards had placed her behind the rest of the group, to a place where she could see the others trying to fight off the dementors but most importantly, she could see the dark figures looming closer with every second that passed.

Seeing them was nothing compared to feeling them, though. Belladonna began shivering uncontrollably from the cold. The dementor was already taking away her happiness and hope, which lead her to give up in performing the patronus charm and drop her wand on the floor. There was no point in trying. It was completely hopeless. She was simply not strong or happy enough to perform such a complicated spell.

“Fuck it,” she thought bitterly, “it’s not like the others care if the dementor takes my soul. Penelope will find someone else, someone more trustworthy. Seb will find better friends. He’s right, I am disgusting.”

She was so lost in her thoughts she tripped over a fallen branch, which allowed the dementor to start looming over her. She couldn’t concentrate on the dementor’s disgusting appearance, for she was too busy remembering her most horrific memories. Not only remembering, she could feel every harrowing moment of said experiences. The memories came in fragments. First, her parent’s maniacal laughter when they returned from Azkaban, ready to continue reigning terror onto the world and, most importantly, their own children. Then, she heard her sister screaming in pain and terror as she was scratched, bitten, and ripped apart by a pack of hungry werewolves. A memory so strong that she could almost feel the tears running down her cheeks as she watched her grisly death. Then, she heard the angry growls of werewolves chasing her, and her own screams as one of the wolves managed to bite her arm. The strongest memory, however, was the simplest one. No screaming, no sounds of tearing fabric and bones crunching. Only a deep, long howl of a werewolf during a full moon.

The events of the few seconds after they had started to plan seemed to merge and blur together. No one had really any idea what was going to happen on this trip, they hadn’t actually planned on seeing something in the woods. Maybe Centaurs or something else but a dragon? They hadn’t actually believed the dragon would be sitting in the dark parts of the forest waiting for the group to stumble across it.

Well, that had already happened. It was better to just go with the flow. That was what Aivree can do easily. Smirking she hurried to listen to what else was being said.

Words exchanged between Belle and Sebastian turned heated, something Aivree hadn’t truly expected. After all they both were part of the trio that wanted screw everyone over. That was what she had seen over and over again.

Taking a breath she sighed, Belle started to order everyone but no one seemed to be listening instead they started to follow Phyrus who seemed to have everything under control. She supposed that was why he was the perfect and she was not. Running into things to quickly was probably not the best idea.

No matter, it hadn’t bit her in the butt to often. Wasn’t like she was going to change that anytime soon.

That was when all the dementors appeared. It caused Aivree to freeze, the cold presence wasn’t something she wanted to think about. Not again. The Dementors reminded her of that day. That battle, the bodies the death--it was a little to clear in her mind. “Fuck. Gotta think of something positive!” she whispered to herself moving away gripping her wand she held it out, the beast coming towards her.

Positive. Aivree rippled through her mind trying to find something happy, what was happy for her? Her mind went to her cat. Was she that lame? Well the cat was one of her best friends. Fluff knew everything, just like all the other creatures she had become close too. They were what she leaned on more then anyone.

A warm sense of happiness appeared in her chest.

“Expecto Patronum!” Aivree called yelling, her wand pointing at the beast before her, soon a bright blue white light appeared from the tip of her wand out came rushing a ghostly image of a cat. Odd, she was going to be some kind of crazy cat lady when she grew up; that what Aivree had thought when she had learned the spell.

With the spell cried out Aivree felt the cold disappear from her sights. She panted trying to clear her every cloudy mind. She hated Dementors. But who liked them? Of course they had interesting characteristics and learning about them was one thing...but face to face? She would be happy if nothing like that ever happened to her again.

“That worked.” Aivree panted looking around for a moment. She saw the others working on their own problems, the Dementors seemed to really put a hitch in there plan, or what little plan they had. Course then Keith decided to take matters into his own hands heading to the Dragon.

“Fucking idiot.” Aivree whispered standing to her feet her patronus lingered with her floating. It seemed...like someone was missing. Where did that snake go? Belle. Why did she care? The girl was nothing but terrible to her at most points.

Hell, Aivree could be nice. Fuck she could be nice. But fuck it it hurt sometimes.

Following seeping cold that made one want to sleep forever Aivree found Belle surrounded by the evil beasts. “Expecto Patronum!” Aivree called again using her beast to save the girl from losing her soul, it wasn’t a pretty picture. Even if Aivree didn’t get along with Belle, did anyone truly deserve to die that way?

Penelope Hottle
Forbidden Forest | Evening | Panicked

Seeing Phyrun send his patronus to round them up, Penelope acted accordingly. Her eyes scanned the field and spotted Keith and Emma separated from the group. Phryun was busy getting the majority of the group protected, so she sent her patronus off to the stragglers. Her jaw dropped and she could hardly believe her eyes as she watched Keith open the barrier and step in. Was he insane?! Sure, dementors were terrifying, but wasn't an agitated dragon nearly just as bad? Why hadn't he just cast the patronus charm like the rest of them? She had always viewed Keith as someone very adept with magic, so she had been under the impression that if someone as stupid as Blutmond could do it, then Keith should be able to as well. Her polecat patronus ran and circled around Emma, forcing oncoming dementors to retreat from the Ravenclaw. She sent the patronus then towards Keith, though she wasn't entirely sure if it could break through the barrier.

While her patronus went off, Pen heard another shout of the charm and whipped around to see what was going on. Her heart dropped to her feet when she saw dementors approaching Belladonna, who was helplessly there, looking as if she was sinking into the worst feelings of her life. The image would be burned into the back of her mind as the first time she nearly lost the Slytherin girl. Thankfully, Aivree's patronus came to the rescue and dashed away the evil creatures. Penelope sprinted to Bella, not much caring for her own safety or anything else that was going on; it was a personal flaw of hers to get lost in the moment. She dropped to her knees and hugged Bella close to her. "Bella, Bella!" she shouted, wanting the girl to snap out of it. The brunette held onto the other's shoulders and shook her, wanting her to come to. "C'mon, be okay, please?! You didn't get the kiss, right? Bella! Bloody fucking hell," she spoke loudly and every word was panicked. She couldn't lose more people especially not because of something so stupid like their naive little dragon hunt.

Her hands began to shake and tears welled up in her eyes. Fear made it harder to breathe and she found herself getting lightheaded. It easily could've been an overreaction, but that was just another flaw of hers: she jumped to conclusions and got emotional and was never known for being calm, cool, or collected. She wanted to get out of there- to get to safety. Her first thought was to carry Bella away from there, but that didn't get very far because she wasn't exactly very physically strong, so picking up and carrying a girl her own size was out of the question. She looked around and her eyes stopped on Eli. "Eli, help!" she shouted, "She's out and I can't carry her." Eli was probably the strongest out of all of them, physically speaking. She looked to Phryun "What are we doing?" She asked desperately hoping there was some plan to get them out of there safely. They'd bitten off more than they could chew. Then it hit her, Keith! In the mess of it all, she'd forgotten that he'd put himself in danger last she'd seen. "Keith!" she shouted, whipping her head around, panicked about what her friend was doing now.

Elliot Shepard
The Forbidden Forest

Everything was happening too quickly in Eli's opinion. There were too many people to keep track of. One minute Pene was looking at him gratefully, then she was being cut off by Bella who seemed to have decided she was the leader and then Phyrun was speaking up, Bluntmond storming away and was that Keith sneaking off? Then he felt it, just moments before Phyrun said it. The chill creeping up in the air, the feeling of hopelessness.

Dementors.

The worst thing about them was he couldn't fight them. Anything else and he could use his wand, or heck, just pick up a branch and whack it like a bludger in Quidditch. The feeling grew stronger, as dementors swooped in, almost like physical hands dragging at him, pulling at him with their icy fingers. Despite his best efforts he could never summon a proper Patronus, not even just a tiny wisp. Something. Anything. Instead he was forced to watch helplessly as- Suddenly a burst of warmth drove back the cold and a familiar shape danced around him. Pene's patronus. He stared at it for a moment, still in awe at how easily it fought the off the chill before he shook his head. Focus!

Blutmond was doing fine, his non-corporeal patronus doing the job just fine. Pene could hold her own and was helping out Emma. The Coben girl had somehow gotten further away too, dropping her wand, but Aiv was sending her Patronus over - Phyrun had just finished casting a ward, but he looked exhausted, them he shouted something, struggling to his feet but failing. Looking in the direction Phyrun had been, Eli's heart sank. His first instinct was to rush out to Keith when he saw his idiot best friend running straight through the barrier glowing blue, but with the dementors swarming around them he knew he wouldn't be able to reach him. Eli clenched his hands helplessly, feeling utterly useless. Not enough of them knew how to cast a patronus, Keith was way too far for him to help. But Bella wasn't.

"Aiv check on Phyrun!" Taking a deep breath he darted out of the ward circle towards where Pene kneeled beside the Slytherin girl a few meters away. Immediately he felt the chill return. Aivree's Patronus had scared away the dementor for now, but Eli knew how much having one of those things that close to you could leave you shaken. "Blutmond get your ass over here! It'll be more effective if we stay close!" He called over to the Slytherin boy when he saw him approaching.

"Come on," he said to Pene, crouching down on the ground when he reached her. Aiv's patronus was doing it's job well, but he'd feel a lot better when they were in Phyrun's ward."I got her. Grab her wand," he added, noticing it lying on the ground beside the blonde as he picked her up as gently as he could given the circumstances. She weighed almost nothing to him and he carried her with ease, though given how she usually acted towards him she didn't know if she'd be gratefully for it. They were all safely in the ward now, except for Keith. He really hoped that idiot knew what he was doing.

Okay, so.

Maybe running towards a fiery fireball of doom in which inside lays a dragon wasn't the best idea, but compared to facing the Dementors and those memories, Keith would very much prefer his chances against a reptilian beast which can charcoal him alive vs. reliving his childhood trauma. No way was he going back down that hole. Nope, nop, nada.

Still, the consequences of his actions doesn't really hit him until he feels the heat from the dragon's flames in his face, almost threatening to burn him if not for the flicker of magic on his skin. His body had moved before his mind had time to catch up with him and now that he was a good distance away from the ghastly phantoms, he felt slightly (just slightly) better.

No regrets was his motto and he would live through with that til his dying breath. Since he was in this far already, he might as well go all the way.

Venturing deeper with caution, seeing how he wasn't snapped in half the moment he stepped out of the fire and into the dragon's domain, it became clear to him that something was wrong. Not with him (that's already a given) but with the dragon.

He cast an invisibility spell on himself before going any closer and found the dragon breathing heavily on the ground, almost as though it was in excruciating pain. There was a glimmer of magic on its scales. It shimmered with the same sickly shade of green as the force field and the night Blutmond decided to go trigger happy in the Three Broomsticks.

Keith chose to do the smart thing and observe from a safe distance, keeping closer to the torso and lower half of the dragon than its snapping head.

Not that it mattered much. The dragon was in too much pain to focus. It looked to Keith like it was about to die soon and the brunet would've felt pity for the creature if it didn't have the ability to kill him almost instantly.

Upon closer inspection, he spied a smaller flame hidden underneath its wings. From the cracks, there were three black stones, only they weren't stones. They were something else. Something not even Keith could dare to not have. He gulped when he confirmed his suspicions. The swelling in the dragon's belly was gone and it was there where the streaks of green magic were most prominent.

Some magic was at work here. A spell (or a curse would be the more appropriate term) must've kept the dragon from laying its eggs until they were time to hatch, but such a strain could potentially kill the mother and risk the chances of a miscarriage. What kind of witch or wizard would dare do something so cruel?

It didn't take a genius to link two and two together. Hiding a dragon in the Forbidden Woods, keeping it imprisoned with wards and using such a spell. If his hunch was right, whoever the suspect was is after the very things located in the underneath that dragon's wing; and now that the dragon has laid its eggs, it's only a matter of time til the culprit comes to retrieve their prize.

Keith had to act fast. The Dementors had already been a triggering alarm, but he couldn't do it alone.

He'd have to face those things once again.

Running out of the fire sphere, Keith called out to his friends, waving his arms to catch their attention.

"Guys! Come down here quick! We don't have much time," he yelled, catching the attention of the Dementors as well. He won't tell anyone but that's the most pissed scared he's ever been in his life. His eyes were wide, almost begging them to help. One couldn't blame him if they didn't. They were all within the protection of the ward.

"You have to trust me!"

The passing scene went by next in a massive blur. Something hitched in his breath, his heart ached in a sudden. When he tried to shout her name, words drowned in the whisp of a wind, and if he ever felt fear in his heart, it was now or when there was the duck, but no one talks about that. Perhaps that was his first and last shot of patronus for the night, not knowing if he could conjure yet another in such a wreck of emotions. One had gotten to be insane to expect even the slightest speck of joyful thought out of him right now.

Fingers gripped tightly around his wand, his other hand pressed against the chipped surface of tree bark. It was as though the world ran in slow motion, the descent of the platinum haired girl like the petals of a frail silver flower. His eyes widen, horror surged over him as he prayed by the Lord and whoever might listen that it was not a kiss. The thought of it horrified him to no end, the stories of dementors and even his mere close encounter. He would not dare imagine the effects to a direct kiss.

Any broken memory of her vanished in an instant, and for that moment the fact that she was alive and well was all that mattered. Sebastian dashed towards his friend, almost recklessly as he disregarded most of the threats that may have as well lie before him. He stopped when he felt something roll over his feet. Bending down, Sebastian picked up and twirled the other wand between his fingers. Its length, its familiarity of touch- he knew it as well as he knew his own wand. Bella’s wand.

With a last firm grip over it, the Slytherin boy shoved her wand in his pocket before he aimed his own towards the Hufflepuff boy’s face, the tip of his wand glowing and illuminating both his and Sebastian’s features. “You get your filthy hands off her, right now or I swear I will END YOU,” he snapped through gritted teeth, though his eyes were flaming in a mix of not only rage, yet mostly panic, confusion, and fear. Sebastian made no effort to even spice up his threats, as he usually does. He didn’t care if the Hufflepuff boy was merely trying to help, he did not care that Bella’s lover was there. Sebastian knew her more than anyone else there, cared for her more than anyone.

Sebastian then shifted his wand slightly away from Eliot, mostly in the reminder that Bella was also in his line of aim. “Bombarda!” An loud noise was heard, and the tree behind the Hufflepuff boy cracked, a chunk of its bark having exploded by the spell. It serves no purpose other than to startle the other male if he were to fight back as Sebastian knew that he would have been no match in physical battle. The Slytherin boy took the moment to seize Belladonna from Elliot’s grasps, snatching her away before tumbling back slightly, saved by the presence of yet another tree behind him. She looked way lighter when the fat boy was carrying her.

Instantly, his first instincts was to check on her, tugging at his wand in awkward ways as he tried to reach for her nose and mouth, then neck. Still breathing and alive. Sebastian let out a sigh of relief. . . and his gaze slowly drifted away from her to the brunette girl, standing there wide eyed filled with concerned. Sebastian straightened up himself, managing back his composure and wiping any sort of expression off his face. “You may be her lover,” he murmured, not sure if the other could have heard him. Not that it mattered too much at the moment. “But I am her family.

So Bella was unconscious. So things had obviously gone haywire. There was literally no reason for him to stick around anymore. Sebastian stepped aside, going closer to the slope where the dragon was present and saw. . . Keith. He had not noticed the other’s disappearance much ever since the dementor attacks, nor anyone for that matter. The Slytherin boy could not help but wonder what the other was doing, but knew he would not have done anything anyway. His mind ran into the quickest, and most obvious of all decisions, one that he should have made hours ago.

He knew that Hogwarts were out of bounds, yet all he had to do was get away from here. With a final look casted upon the shouting male, Sebastian looked down upon him, feet frozen and planted upon the ground. Surely there was a bit of hopeful thought that the other would make it back alive- stupid and unreasonable Keith was, after all, still human all the same. The Slytherin boy thought of a few last words, perhaps warning him to stay safe, yet then he noticed nothing would come through at such a distance anyway. And when would he ever explicitly worry over the other’s safety?

Just. . . be alive, Anderson,” he muttered under his breath, the greens of his eyes reflecting the desultory flashes of flames as they laid fixated on the reckless Gryffindor. And with a sharp crack in the air, he and his unconscious companion apparated into the night.

Sebastian Blutmond

And with a sharp crack in the air, he and his unconscious companion apparated into the night.

everyone, in a way

Phyrun wasn't sure what was going on anymore. Too much was going on, too much was swimming through his senses as he tried to not faint due to overuse of magic. But he did hear Elliot saying something about someone checking on him.

It brought his mind back to issue at hand and he shoved at the ground, forcing himself upright.

Even with the patronus ward in place, the memories were still there and it was a driving force to keep him on his feet, to keep his shaking limps holding him upright.

"Gather the others," he ground out towards the girl Elliot had directed towards him. Appreciating the gesture but finding it unnecessary, it certainly hadn't been hard to find which one Elliot had directed towards him. He would not be a burden to any other. Not yet, not now.

But then Bludmond moved and Phyrun feared that the Slytherin would do something stupid, would cause trouble and force Phyrun to use magic he did not have to expend.

Instead, the Slytherin took the girl in Elliot's arms away from the Hufflepuff and before he could even say anything, they were gone and Phyrun felt his heart sink. Out of all of them, he had been certain that Bludmond had been a very powerful wizard and now he was lacking not just one but two wands to keep any other troubles at bay.

Anderson's voice was certainly a relief. He looked towards the Gryffindor, entire body shaking, and while he was willing to trust the boy in this matter, he was certain that the trip to the Gryffindor's side past the dementors was certainly not going to be easy. He gripped at his wand, drawing together what magic he had left.

It felt like his insides were burning.

"Everyone," he called out, hoping they would all listen. "Gather tightly together and run to Anderson. Do not hesitate and run right through the wards. If you hesitate, I will not be able to make sure you are safe of the dementors." His patronus returned but looked far more like fog than it had last time even as the owl was still discernible. "This is the last of my magic and if anything else comes our way, I will not be able to do anything about it."

Darkness swirled on the edge of his vision and the exhaustion caused him to have a hard look on his face. "So be quick and get to Anderson before my patronus fails."

'Before my body fails me,' went left unsaid as tremors quaked across his body. He started moving towards Anderson, the owl patronus flying ahead to start circling the group. His feet felt like they were lead that he was dragging through quicksand. If he managed to make it to the ward, he would be impressed as his owl patronus widened and elongated its circle, creating a sort of guarded path towards the ward where Anderson was waiting.

EMMA
|| mood: freaking the fuck out || location: the forest ||
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

A shiver ran down her spine, both from the realisation of the situation and from the chill that spread across the air and gripped her. She'd never seen a dementor before but she knew what they were immediately, how could she not? The appearance, the feeling, it was unmistakable. Emma hadn't even realised she'd been rooted to the spot, frozen, until she felt Keith give her a shove, heard his familiar voice instructing her to run. Instinctively she reached to grab his hand, to tug him with her.
"You have to come, come on," The pleading tone in Emma's voice was unusual, He wasn't following. When he repeated his command, she lingered, eyes searching his face for some clue, some answer, and then turned and ran for the others. She'd barely had the chance to reach them and look back when the blue glow enveloped her friend, and he ran. But not towards the rest of them.
"Keith!"
There was no use in trying the charm herself, Emma knew from experience that she couldn't cast a proper patronus, it'd be a waste of time to try. Relief blossomed in her chest when she realised that, mercifully, there were some members of their group who could. The girl squeezed Phyrun's arm as a silent thankyou, a silent encouragement, while making a mental note to pretty much fall at Penelope's feet when they were back in the castle later-- without her, she wasn't sure what she would've done.
There was no time to dwell on the what-ifs, she had to be in the moment. With one last glance in Phyrun's direction, she headed for the others.
"Blutmond, if we weren't busy, I swear I'd have you. The audacity--" It seemed as though Emma was prepared to launch into a full on bombardment of insults, but Keith's voice cut through and reminded her that now was not the time. Trust him. They could trust him, couldn't they? Keith, and now Phyrun, were telling them to run. This time, Emma wasn't planning on hesitating.

"Is everyone ready? We go together. Nobody split apart."
The confidence in her words surprised her.
Somewhere in the corner of her vision, she saw Mila silently slip between Eli and Penelope and grab their hands.
And she prepared to set off.

Penelope Hottle
Forbidden Forest | Evening | Confused, but doing her best to help

Oh, for heaven's sake, Keith! Did he really have to go running off to a God forsaken dragon? What was he thinking! Penelope thanked her lucky stars that Eli was there to help her with Bella. The boy seemed to pick her up with ease, which impressed Penelope, who would have struggled a whole lot trying to carry the girl. When Eli mentioned the wand, her eyes darted to where the blonde had been lying before only to see Sebastian picking it up, which was fine. Or, at least, she thought it was fine. She had expected him to join them and to work with them to protect themselves.

Instead, he was yelling at them. Penelope's brows furrowed, confusion evident across her face. Every time she thought the Slytherin would do good, he reminded her that having faith in him was a fool's errand. The familiar feeling of disappointment and hurt crept up and she couldn't believe her eyes when he actually attacked Eli. When the spell shot off, Penelope found she couldn't breathe. Was her best friend actually getting attacked for trying to help?! She felt panic claw its way up her throat. "Eli!" She shouted when the noise went off, her eyes squeezing shut. A heartbeat later, she opened them and found Eli relatively okay, but Bella nowhere to be found. "Are you okay?" she asked her friend, eyes scanning his body for any signs of new injuries from the blast. She knew Sebastian had taken the girl, but she couldn't even begin to fathom why. Did he think they were going to hurt her? The whole interaction felt so twisted. The brunette's eyes searched the area for the boy and found him. There was a moment of eye contact and she saw him saying something. The distance was too great for her to pick up the sound, but years of silently mouthing words in class to her friends had made her an expert at reading lips. However, she began to doubt her abilities because she didn't quite understand what Sebastian meant. She was her lover, but he was her family? For Merlin's sake, they'd scarcely done more than flirt. And on top of that, she and the Slytherin boy had the same intentions! The fact that he might think she'd put Bella in danger was yet another in a long line of offenses from him.

Penelope was brought back to the problem at hand by Keith's voice. Her head whipped around and she found him trying to get their attention. Phyrun's instructions followed soon after, but Penelope was already prepared to go. She got her wits about her and jogged back to the group. Her grip on her wand tightened and she soon found her free hand to be occupied by Mila's. She gave a gentle squeeze and turned her attention to the wards. Phyrun told them to be quick about getting through the wards. With her full trust in him, she nodded and ran towards the invisible wall that had once kept them out. Her friend needed her and she had to help him; the Hufflepuff was loyal to a fault.

disclaimer: rusty post, I think I've forgotten how to write Keith

Keith really should've been relieved to see his friends (foolhardy and loyal to a fault) run towards him, but he wasn't. His eyes were trained on the dementors cowering from the light of Phyrun's dimming patronus and he cursed himself for the nth time for being unable to summon a patronus to help.

Seeing Phyrun slacked, Keith rushed forward to aid the strained Ravenclaw. His face was streaked white with exhaustion and on reflex, Keith supported his weight by throwing the male's arm over his neck. "It's okay, Phyr, I got you."

He muttered, frantically casting the fireproof spell over his friends. It surprised him to see how steady his voice was on contrary to how he felt. Once his spell was completed, he gulped and ushered the group into the flaming vortex.

The dragon was still, eyes going from enraged to glazed. It's cat-like irises, once so full of malice and life were hollowing out like the quick disintegration of a body to a flame. If circumstances were different, Keith would've felt bad. Seeing such a magnificent creature just moments before in its full glory, quickly reduced to nothing... it was cruel.

But Keith couldn't afford to feel wretched. Not now, at least.

He passed Phyrun to Elliot, choosing to take the bold step towards the dragon, venturing closer than he ever would and could. The dragon's eyes followed his movements, wanting to lift its head and no doubt, snap Keith in half with its large jaws. But it didn't. Couldn't.

Keith gulped, hands out before him as if trying to soothe, trying to make peace?

"It's going to be okay. I'm," Sorry? That wouldn't be right. What he was going to do was as horrible as what the witch or wizard who cast the damn spell planned to do, but at least---at least, Keith and his friends can try to give its children a better life.

Maybe. Hopefully.

Finding no words to convey his message, the Gryffindor merely took a deep breath and whispered a sleep charm which he wasn't sure would work. Most spells were ineffective on dragons. Keith could only pray that this wasn't one of them.

And then he felt it---the dragon, fighting him. Fighting his spell. Stupid, proud reptilian.

Can't you see I'm trying to help you?

But Keith was stubborn and he pressed harder. Even when he felt the temperature drop, the cold slowly creeping into the enclosed furnace. From the corner of his eye, he saw a wand point at the dragon, echoing his sleep charm. And then another to his right. And two more besides him.

Penny. Mila. Eli. Aiv.

A Gryffindor couldn't be more proud to have them as friends.

The dragon's eyes lowered in reluctant but inevitable surrender.

I'm sorry.

When its eyes came to a full close, the sphere of fire flickered out, licking the air in a futile attempt to stay lit. It was over.
Almost.

Keith made a run for the dragon eggs, snatching one under his arm. He was yelling orders, mostly to run because the Dementors were at their heels but also because there was the growing apprehension that it wasn't completely over and something bad. Something very, very bad was going to happen but he didn't know what. He knew they had to run. They had to get out. They had to---

The ground beneath them rumbled and it was an empty burst, a completely soundless explosion which knocked everyone off the ground, searing blinding whites into their minds before knocking them out completely.

When Keith came to, the dementors were gone. The ground smelt of burnt ash. Trees were on fire and the dragon... the dragon was gone. Everything was spinning and there was a maddening, high-pitch ringing sound in his ear. He staggered to his feet.

Where was his friends? Where was---

He felt something heavy under his arm. The dragon's egg grounded him, reminding him of what happened. He saw a black hooded figure, standing where the dragon had once been, his back to him.

"You," Keith coughed out, lifting his wand. He could stop him right now. He could hex him. But his brain was too scrambled, too fried from the explosion. "You shouldn't--"

The figure turned just enough for Keith to catch the sight of black curls and in the figure's hands was an egg, identical to the one Keith was holding.

His spell failed.

It didn't simply sputter out of existence, oh no. It shattered, which would have been rather interesting and cool to document had he the strength to pay it any attention. Instead, his world was nothing more than black spots and painful exhaustion and just as the spell failed, so did any strength to keep going.

Instead of falling to the ground, though, he found himself suddenly supported by a body. Someone had come to him to help him and while he hissed in pain at the contact - it was like an extreme version of his hand or his foot being asleep and it was all over - he sagged heavily against the person as soft words reached his foggy mind.

"It's okay, Phyr, I got you."

It was one of the other boys that had him. His brain wouldn't tell him who but he didn't care. He found his forehead pressed against their neck seeking some comfort but what was beyond him.

He could feel the other speaking through the movement against his forehead.

His whole world became focused on that sensation. There was no more noise being registered, no more sight, no sound. Just the feeling of the other's neck against his forehead, which his muddled brain finally clued in on the fact that it was probably awkward all around.

He didn't care to do anything else.

He couldn't, even if he had wanted to.

It seemed whoever had initially supported him had deemed it enough because he was suddenly passed off. The brief moment of hang time between the two supports was fear inducing but did nothing to bring strength back. Instead, it sapped him of what was left and he succumbed to the darkness that had threatened to take him after the warding circle with the patronus.

Eli was focused on pulling the Slytherin girl to safety, so he didn't realise Blutmond was there until he was shoving his wand in face. "Seriously?" he said, incredulous. He couldn't believe -well he could actually. He just thought that the other boy's self-preservation skills would be better than to try and pull this kind of shit right now. Before he could react further, a loud crack made him jump. Instinctively shielding the girl he was holding on to and inadvertently shoving her right into the Slytherin boy's arms. Another blink and they were gone before Eli could stop them.
"I'm fine Pene," he told his friend, gritting his teeth in a rare show of frustration. There was no time to dwell on it - they had to get to Keith. They ran over, the whole bunch of them - the ones who hadn't decided to abandon them anyway - until they were just a few mere meters away from the dragon. Once he figured out what Keith was trying to do, he adjusted his hold on Phyrun and raised his own wand, muttering the incantation. Eli didn't know what was going on, but he trusted Keith.
He was just hefting Phyrun over his shoulder so they could escape the dementors when something knocked him off his feet. Okay,he was starting to regret wanting an adventure at this point.
"Phyrun, are you okay?" He asked the boy lying a few feet away, crawling over to shake his shoulder, but it was no use. He was out cold, but the slow rise and fall of his chest assured Eli his friend was still alive. Glancing around, he saw the others also lying on the ground and...a hooded stranger. A shiver ran down his spine. Eli didn't know who it was, but his instincts just screamed that the creepy newcomer was bad news. He acted without thinking, not knowing if it would work or not. He raised his wand. "Accio Dragon egg!"

Aivree moved her gaze from the Slytherin she had saved from the Dementors, her friends seemed quick to come to her side. She had to hand it to them, they were loyal even if Buttmond was an asshole who always begged to be hit in the face, at least he worried for his friend. Even if it was only them and no one else.

With the girl safe for the moment from the monsters that stole ones soul Aivree started to try and focus on what was going on around her. After all, they needed to get the unconscious one away from the fight and this dragon did not seem to want to go down without a fight. And Keith, the brave idiot that he was wanted nothing but to put himself in the thick of it all.

“I got his back!” Aivree called towards Ellie moving herself slowly towards the ward just before the Gryffindor seemed to come back out telling them to come towards the ward, towards the danger. Seemed to be a stretch but she trusted the guy. He was a good friend. Reckless, caused trouble but she trusted him. And the part of her that wanted to see the dragon in all her glory was even more powerful.

They moved together, the Slytherins seemed to have ditched the fight. Typical. Now where had this happened before? Aivree hadn’t wanted to open that can of worms again, but it brought a rage in her belly. If her friend wasn’t in some kind of danger she would have gone after them.

“What the hell is going on in here.” Aivree groaned looking to her friends before her eyes fell on Keith. What was he holding? Was that--That was a Dragon egg. The dragon though, seemed to have decided it was not going to fight any longer. Aivree felt her chest tighten. Damn whoever did this.

It explained why the dragon was acting like she was towards them. But the ward, the feeling of a dark magic lingering in the air. Aivree hesitated for a moment. Her eyes moving towards Keith and a new figure that had suddenly appeared. He held items that looked like Keiths--the eggs. Phyrun had passed out, everyone was a bit of a worse for wear and part of her wondered if this adventure had really been the greatest idea.

Aivree watched as the egg came suddenly whirled towards Eli his magic propelling it in his direction. Aivree stood to her feet the exhaustion of the night wearing down on her. But she needed to get to her friends side even if the creepy hooded man seemed to be bad news. It wouldn’t have been the first time she faced someone in a black hood before.

(feel free to bunny the cloaked figure, he gets away in the end)

Keith fell slack from relief when he saw the third remaining dragon egg whizz towards Elliot, but relief quickly turned to horror as the figure waved his wand, throwing a damaging spell towards his friend.

"Protego!" the Gryffindor yelled, lunging forward infront of his friend before stumbling back at the impact of the spell clashing against his. His magic shield shattered and with grit teeth, he shot back a Confringo that was promptly deflected.

The figure advanced with steady menace, a killing intent so strong Keith could almost taste it. Unlike his friends and him, the figure was completely unharmed and his magic was not even close to depleted. They were at a clear disadvantage, despite their numbers.

The best course of action would be to retreat, but Keith wasn't even sure he had enough strength to warp himself, let alone the others, away.

It worked. It actually frigging worked - Oof. The air was knocked from Eli slightly as the egg whizzed straight into his chest and threw him off balanc
Despite himself, he was distracted from the hooded figure that was probably about to kill him and his friends by the dragon egg he was now cradling. An actual dragon egg. It felt warm in his hands as he traced the markings on it in awe.

A flash of light caught his attention. Right. In the middle of a battle. He stepped up beside Keith so that both of them were blocking Phyrun from the view of the mysterious black hooded stranger, sending the Gryffindor a wry grin.

"Got your back Anderson. Expulso!" The hooded figure was forced to take a step back as the ground in front of him exploded. Aivree jumped in at that moment with a well timed hex that had him taking another step away. Between the four of them they managed to hold him off, forcing him to split his attention between the four of them. But it couldn't last, they were all exhausted, especially those who had cast their patronuses before, they just needed one opening... Eli winced as one of the stranger's spells clipped his arm, drawing a large gash on his upper arm. One of their stupefys managed to send him off balance. "Now!" They cast their spells simultaneously, buying precious seconds for Aivree and Penelope to dart over.

Eli knelt beside Phyrun, dragon egg tucked under one arm and the other hand on the prefect. Focus, focus. The moment he saw Aivree grab onto Keith's outstretch hand, he Apparated them out of there, a vicious spell tearing through the dirt where they were moments before. Don't splinch, please don't splinch. They tumbled onto the ground, breathing hard. Eli scrambled to his feet and almost immediately fell over, still dizzy. Aivree helped him upright as they scanned their surroundings. There was no sign of murderous strangers and thankfully, they all seemed to have retained all their limbs. Even the itty-bitty ones. Eli allowed himself to relax a little as he recognised where they were, still in the Forbidden Forest, but much, much closer to the edge. In fact he could almost make out Hagrid's hut through the trees.

"Well" he said, looking at his friends. "That was an adventure, huh?" His legs felt like jelly and he sank down onto his knees again, envying Phyrun who seemed fast asleep. Speaking of jelly, he was sure he still had those snacks he remembered packing into his bags what felt like years ago at the beginning of the night. Then he remembered something else. "Uh, Keith?" He looked over to his friend who was still holding onto the dragon egg and held up the one in his own hands. "What are we gonna do with these?

Keith was breathing hard. The sudden (but much needed) apparition had knocked the wind out of him. He was staggering on his feet but after a few gulps of oxygen to the brain, he was up again, looking back at the woods with momentary concern. Whoever that was must be furious that they got away.

The thought of it drew a slow smile on his face which broke into a triumphant grin.

"Hell yeah!! Guys, we did it!" he yelled, hooking whoever's nearby around the neck, while fist pumping the air in a cheer. He wasn't really sure what they did but it was definitely something. If it weren't for their aching bruises and the live dragon eggs, Keith would've easily thought they were hallucinating.

"Merlin, we have eggs," he suddenly breathed. The revelation finally sinking in. "Live. Dragon. Eggs." The stars were in his eyes. He looked absolutely ecstatic. His head whipped towards Eli at the question.

"What are we going to do with them?" He grabbed the Hufflepuff's arms, "We'll raise them of course! Er, well, I don't suppose anyone knows how to raise a dragon huh?" His brows furrowed as his line of sight trailed to the smoke coming out from Hagrid's hut. The answer was so simple.

Cheshire grin in place, Keith snapped his fingers, making finger guns in the hut's direction. "We can bring them to Hagrid. He's raised a dragon before right? I'm sure we can convince him to take in two more." He glanced down at a passed out Phyrun and looked around, past his friends. His voice lowered, "But we have to keep this a secret. No tales alright?"

He held out his hand and everyone laid theirs on top of his in suite. It was a small pact sworn to secrecy. Everyone was grinning, despite the exhaustion. (Well, everyone who was awake at least.)

Emma healed up any major injuries from the fight and Keith pulled some strings with Hagrid, having to bargain his way into him keeping the dragons. There were conditions of course. Most of them for safety and regulations, but Hagrid's most important warning was whispered almost in a nervous laugh, "You know this is illegal right, boy?"

To which Keith responded with a confident, "Yep. I'll take responsibility if anything happens, Hagrid. Don't sweat the small stuff."

The half giant looked unconvinced but Keith sounded so sure of himself that he could only give in with a sigh. After hearing what had happened, he was surprised that such dangerous activity was happening just a few miles away from his own living quarters. (*Keith had told him how he found the dragon eggs. It was one of the conditions.)

When everything had been settled, Keith and his friends snuck back into their dorms. Some whispering, some just longing to get back to bed.

"I want to name one of the dragons Smokey."

"What? That's such a bad name."

"Nah, it's cool. Trust me. It'll be even cooler if it's scales are black."

"Gosh, Keith," Disbelief came out in a laugh, "You're so lame. Fine, we'll name one of them Smokey."

"Smokey the Dragon," Keith confirmed.

"Smokey the Dragon," they replied, some rolling their eyes, others sarcastic, but all smiling.

They slept like logs that night but before any of them could go to bed, green lightning reverberated in the night sky casting eerie shadows across their windows. Keith had gotten up to look out then and he could've sworn, he saw the same cloaked figure standing outside Hogwart's opened courtyard.
