Apotheosis is a unique helmet that allows the wearer to simulate life. It answered the prayers of people around the world, they would no longer have to live their mundane life, where they are poor, sad and lonely. They could mold themselves in to the person they always wanted to be, from looks, to personality. It was a device to relax and escape the harsh trivialities of life. Naturally, there were many who opposed its integration in to the world. It would create sociopaths, people can recreate murder, torture, and anything they could possibly imagine, it was like having a lucid dream that lasted as long as you wanted it to. Those who were curious about this new technology existed in greater numbers than those who opposed it. The price of the device dropped and dropped until the everyday apartment dweller could purchase it without having to worry about what they would be eating for the next month. Soon the technology developed to the point where people were capable of linking together their thoughts, and sharing this lucid state. Even those whom opposed the technology soon became hooked, other forms of entertainment were annihilated, by the craze that apotheosis stirred up.
- Multiple billion dollar corporations rushed to profit off of this while the technology was still new. Surprisingly, an indie game company, called Jinn Tech was the first to develop a real use for this technology. They only had one other game to their name, a simple 2D single player RPG where the player played an angel that had to slay a multitude of demons. Their new game was no different, the name was simple, they called it Apotheosis online, naming it after the technology that allowed its creation. Players flocked to it like moths to a flame. They had to expand the starting area to nearly 100 times its original size within the first week because of all of the crowding. The player could pick between several classes, priest, mage, knight, assassin, and archer. There were also a multitude of crafting skills they could invest in, Blacksmithing, Jewel Crafting, Cooking, Alchemy and Enchanting. A death in the game was permanent, meaning, you would have to create a new character after death. For that reason, a majority of the players just enjoyed civil life within the major cities and bars, flirting and laughing with their customized faces and bodies. Some took darker paths, there were multiple individuals that derived pleasure from murdering people. Some even made an art of it, decorating the crime scene with their victims appendages. It was called sinful and addictive, it was no coincidence that the unemployment rate nearly double within the first month of release. The media of course, was quick to inform those they could, to stay away. They weren't wrong.
- Three months after the games release, something terrifying occurred. A voice from the sky that called themselves God cursed the sinners that played the game. Their minds were segmented from reality, they were damned to lose their mind to Apotheosis, or have their physical bodies rot from starvation. The lucky ones still had people that cared for them in the real world, the unlucky ones were cursed to rot in their chair, without even getting a fair fight. In order to restore their lives, they would have to transcend Babel, the hardest map in the game. No party has even succeed in passing the first map, Mount Hermon. Sadly, that is not the only hurdle. Humans are naturally selfish, there are guilds dedicated to player-killing, and stealing. Regardless of that, there are still several ambitions individuals who still wish to transcend Babel, and reclaim their natural lives. The largest and most ambitious guild, Arcadia is preparing a large party to pass Mount Hermon. They are currently attempting to recruit people for this dangerous task. Arcadia is forging alliances with every guild that is willing to aid them, but there are still quite a few skeptics out there. Even free lancers are allowed to partake in this brave task, so long as they are willing to risk their lives.
