I used to watch Adventure Time constantly but the lack of a over-arching plot combined with the numerous slice-of-life episodes put it off for me. I prefer Gravity Falls and Steven Universe now better than Adventure Time since I've become more better acquainted with the characters and the story feels more compelling to me.

Also, I'm pretty sure the darker tone in most of the older seasons put it off for most people as well.

Adventure Time is ahead of its time, for sure, and is an iconic cartoon but it needs to end on a proper finale.
