Viewpoint Anyone have those characters you just HAVE to play?

Hi! So what I mean is, is there any canon character where if someone wants to rp that fandom with you, and they pick that character and won't shift to someone else, you just can't do that rp with them? Your absolute faves, or the only one you can do confidently so trying someone else would get you stuck etc Or do you try and stay versatile?

I do try to have a couple of characters from most of my fandoms who I can use, but sometimes even then I get a little possessive...e.g. I'd feel less happy in an rp if someone else was being Allister because I love him so fondly and want to do him my way x) I guess I'm a little selfish!

There are some fandoms where I usually rp only one character. I tend to have at least Option B or sometimes Option C, but if none of my preferred options are available I will probably not roleplay. When I play a fandom character I need to connect somehow with the character and there are quite a lot of characters that I like overall but I don't feel like roleplaying them.

One of my main fandoms is Hakuouki. I almost always rp Saito there. I know I would also like to rp Hijikata and interested in rp Sannan. So if I have a choice I'd always pick Saito over someone else and Hijikata would be my "Option B". I might pick Sannan in some cases because I'm interested in trying even if he is not my first choice. I probably would not roleplay if the only available option would be, let's say, Kazama. I don't dislike the character but I don't relate to him at all and probably won't do him justice with my portrayal. So I'd rather stick to the characters I'm comfortable playing.

I don't mind seeing other people rp the fandom characters I rp as well. Always curious to see how they go about it and maybe learn something from a different perspective.

I actually do have these moments, where I am in the particular mood to RP someone such as Clint Barton, Stephen Strange, or Matt Murdock from the Marvel Fandom. And seeing someone else play them does make me feel of course rather disheartened. Though it isn't all that bad, to be honest, as I can see how different people take an approach to certain characters compared to how I play them. Some people, I've seen can either have a better grasp of a character than myself whiile others don't. But in that situation I would try to be versatile depending on who's leftover, as there are some characters I just don't do as I don't know them enough.

I admit I didn't expect Hakuoki to count as an obscure fandom given that I've seen a lot of people around who seem to be fans of the game. Then again, otoge tend to be weird or difficult to rp. owo;;

Anyway personally I don't like to rp canon characters since I'm afraid I won't do them justice, more so if they are a favorite of mine. :'D I'm fine with someone else playing a canon character though, and I tend not to be too picky. I think? There are just a few exceptions like if we're playing in a pokemon, fate, or an MXTX novel setting, I'm fine with referencing canon characters or moving them around NPC style, but I'd feel uncomfy having someone else or myself play the canon characters in our rp. Not really sure why tbh. 🤔

I had to think about this for a second, but I don’t think I could roleplay with someone who insisted on playing Azula. I just love her so much and she is so fun to play, and I feel like most people don’t do her justice. Or maybe I’m just possesive :neutralteeth:

She's pretty much the textbook definition of a psychopath so I think one would have to research the condition to be able to write her properly. Mental illness is rarely portrayed in RP correctly, though.

Oh I absolutely agree! Azula is a very complex character and only those who truly adore her ill write her as she's intended to be!

If Warframe is connected to the RP in question, I gotta play Excalibur Umbra. I just have to.
And not just any of the other Excalibur Umbra Warframes created after "the sacrifice" (or whatever the canon excuse is for that one time I got a full squad of guys playing Excalibur Umbra one time. (I dont think DE has ever actually talked about that)), no I need to play as THE Excalibur Umbra. The one that you see and play as in "the sacrifice".

Sometimes a really specific version of a character is the only 'real' version of a character you want or need, I get it!
