Fantasy Amulet Warriors: A Rose Dethorned

Most Call Me Jack
Christopher Callahan

Chris sat on a Park Bench in Coeur d'Alene City Park overlooking lake Coeur d'Alene. Chris was wearing a white tank top, green cargo shorts and a black custom fit cap with the word CA$H on it in green. The lake was beautiful in June, and Chris would've loved to go swimming, except... The amulet in his hand was stopping him. The intricately carved piece of iron with a red cloth necklace attached to it contained a spirit, one Chris was bound to, and that particular soul didn't like the idea of swimming. The spirit's name? Draco the Besieger.

Draco could not remove his armor and didn't like the idea of being in water should Chris need to assume his form, so Chris was forced to watch others enjoy the beach. The summer between Senior Year and College was either going to be quite uneventful due to the fact that Draco liked to keep Chris away from situations that would be inopportune for Draco, or really eventful due to the fact that Draco would always mention a greater purpose and a final battle with evil.

Chris shook his head, a year earlier he was sure magic was a hoax, and now he was stuck with the soul of a huge metal man that barely spoke and when he did it was doom and gloom.

Ysar the Immortal

Ysar had assumed the form of a raven haired man in a black suit. The Immortal wizard strolled down a street in Seattle. The city would be where Ysar unleashed hell on Earth. The city was just a perfect gateway for demons as several magical ley lines intersected there. Ysar was very excited for his impending assault on humanity.

The humans had never appreciated what Ysar had done for them, most didn't even know of the immortal. Ysar was done protecting the feeble humans and he would end them once and for all. The raven haired Ysar chuckled to himself as he plotted, this was going to be good.

Kaiyo mindlessly strolled through the park, hands in pockets and the hood of his white jacket down. Where shall we sleep tonight? he thought. He heard a sigh in his mind. It was the voice of the spirit that resided within his black-and-icy-blue amulet. Why go through the trouble of finding a new place to sleep everyday? If you get us sick, nobody'll help you, said Leonardo Corbeau, who was said spirit. Kaiyo shrugged. Cheaper, he replied.

In the corner of his eye, he noticed a man with a very eye-catching mohawk. He happened to be sitting on what looked like a very comfortable bench which he could use as a bed. He sat himself down beside the man. "Uh, hi?" he said.

Couldn’t we do something else for just one day?

Leia frowned as the spirit invaded her mind for what felt like the millionth time today. Rather than taking its advice and going outside, she opted to stay in her room and read instead. Now she was paying the price for it.

Nevertheless she pressed on, ignoring the nagging phantom as she continued to search through the weird occult book she bought at the bookstore yesterday. Exorcism... not in here. Maybe it could be called ‘ejection’? Or ‘purification’? C’mon, there has to be something… Honestly, she had nothing against Alys, but the last thing she wanted was to be a part of some ‘great battle’. Wait, maybe she could loo- a sudden snort cut off her train of thought.

C’mon! It won’t work anyways. Even I know those are fake.

Okay, she had a point. Leia gave up and closed the book for now. So… umm… where to then?

Hmm. Let's go to that bakery near the park! That sounded pretty good. Getting off her bed, she quickly started getting ready, and ended up just putting on a t-shirt and some jeans since it was so hot today. Besides her shoes, the last thing she put on was her amulet. It was silver in color and had small, dark teal stones embedded in it.

After that she headed out the door.

Jocelyn laid in the grass, her thick curls sprawled out around her head like a halo. She smiled, the warmth of the sun hitting her freckled cheeks. The summer before her senior year of high school. She couldn't believe it. She was almost there. She was so close.

Standing up, she stretched and did her best to get her blood flowing again. Her crop top and high-waisted shorts showed her brown skin and caused a good bit of the local boys to stare. She could practically feel Sha's eyes rolling.

What? Jocelyn asked Sha, holding onto the blood-red amulet around her neck.

Men are pigs, Sha replied, a hiss behind her Russian accent.

Jocelyn found herself chuckling at the spirit, somewhat agreeing - which hardly ever happened. Picking up her backpack, Jocelyn made her way down the park's sidewalk.

"Can't you ever do anything else?"

The voice inside Daciana's head muttered in irritation as the young Romanian sat down on the sandy strip of the beach, red curls flowing in the wind as she gave a confused expression in return to Aziza's complaint. "What you mean? I thought you liked watching me draw?" She inquired, looking out as the waves crashed against the shore, and almost immediately her pencil began moving against the paper. The little woman let her mind wander freely as she sketched the rolling waves, her soft blue blouse flowing with the wing and the little black shorts she wore held the stains of the beach as she moved around in the damp sand, digging her bare toes in as she became even more wrapped up in her creativity.

"I do...but it gets old..." Aziza groaned, growing impatient with the young woman as she clearly began ignoring her to sketch, "All you do is sketch, paint or sculpt, lets do something else."

"Well what do you want to do then impatience?"

"Pick something...anything other than just sitting here."

Daciana gave a long sigh of defeat and set the sketchpad to the side. "How does swimming sound?" She inquired the impatient warrior, and earned a grunt of approval. It seemed as though they were going swimming that afternoon...

Chris was a little shocked that someone would just come sit next to him. Chris considered himself a scary guy, and if this stranger knew what he could turn into he would definitely not be sitting next to him. Chris, he is chosen, said a voice that Chris only heard rarely, the voice of Draco the Besieger. How can you be sure? questioned Chris. Chris saw an image of an intricate steel amulet and the stranger next to him holding it in the back of his mind. It was clear Draco wasn't going to speak more on the issue.

"Hey this might be weird question," said Chris to the stranger next to him, "But do you hear a voice in your head every now and then? Like a spirit?" Chris held out his amulet, "That comes form one of these?"

Chris must have sounded crazy, but if what Draco had showed him was true, it would make perfect sense.

The faint sound of music could be heard vaguely seeping out from the white headphones plasted to her ears. The blonde's head seemed to slightly bob in motion as she was listening to some rather upbeat pop music, her hair flowing behind her a bit with the gentle breeze brought on by both her pace an passing cars. Her amber eyes fixated out venturing down the sidewalk on her way through the town. Her jacket clung to her arms left open letting her pink tank top show off with its rather stranged image of an oval cartoon cat with what appeared to be underwear or a diaper on. Her short black skirt held onto her legs, showing them off a bit down to her white socks and accompanying grey shoes. Her Mp3 player was left clipped to the outside of the pocket, her small phone resting inside it.

A voice within her mind seemed to stir from otherwise being dormant. "You know... you aren't pay much attention for being someone 'searching'. Doesn't that music playing apparatus distract you from paying attention around you?" The voice commented as the girl continued to venture forward.

Millie's head tilted back a bit, looking almost as if she had been awakened form a daze. "I am paying attention... sorta... wandering on the pavement lookin about. You are the only one who can really tell if a lad or lass is a chosen is that not correct?" She spoke as her hand reached up, touching her own amulet resting around her neck. She could hear the audible sigh of the voice as it seemed to become quiet for a brief moment.

"Never-mind then... why not go somewhere nice? A park? Its much more comfortable around nature I'd say. It's always quite nearby. This concrete jungle environment is really unpleasant to be around. It's quite sad how mankind has sought to destroy nature's beauty. The world itself weeps so loudly yet it seems you fools seem oblivious to it. Ah well.. get walking." She spoke with another dismissive sigh, ranting a bit in her own disappointment with the world.

Millie smiled brightly giving a nod. "Very well. Off we go." She spoke out vocally, prying a few eyes towards herself as she seemed to be talking to herself. She carefully crossed the street, heading towards the park, continuing a rather steady pace as her music continued to play in her headphones
