There is a way to keep notifications around until you explicitly view them. So tgey don't disappear when you just open the notif highlight thing.

It has helped me a whole lot with missing notifs. It still happens from time to time but at a noticeably lesser rate.

It has something to do with notification settings in your account thingy. I cant remember.
