Realistic or Modern Aftershocks

"Okay." Angel nodded, and she rubbed her eyes again. "We need to find them quickly. My parents will be worried." Sean nodded. His brother was probably freaking out inside but trying not to show it to his father. His dad never panicked. Angel got up quickly, before stumbling back down to the ground again. Before the boy could utter a quick, "Are you okay?" she was up on her feet again. "I'm fine." she reassured him, running a hand through her hair and pushing the bangs out of her eyes. "Let's go look." she said, and tugged on his arm. "Come on."

"Is your house far?" he started to ask. He would help her first, then look for his brother and dad. Chances are, they had already left to motel and had headed to the rendezvous point their father had established when they had first arrived; they were supposed to go there if anything bad happened and they needed to find one another. Hopefully, if he took a while, they wouldn't leave to go looking for him.

Before the two kids had gone a few steps, a siren made Sean freeze. He glanced over and saw an SUV with flashing lights approaching. A man exited the vehicle, then hurried over to the two teens, yelling.

"Hey, what are you two doing? Where's your parents?" the man asked gruffly, and Sean figured he was a police officer. Great. "What are you doing out here all alone? You need to get out of here, there's a tsunami coming and you wont survive for very long if you're here when it hits." Sean looked at Angel, and figured she wasn't in good enough condition to answer.

"We don't know where our parents are," he admitted, before quickly adding, "Well, I do. That's what we were doing. We were going to go looking for Angel's mom and dad." At the mention of a tsunami, Sean felt his stomach lurch. "A... tsunami...?" he asked quietly, hoping this wouldn't freak Angel out any more than she already was. He, himself, was freaked out. He really hoped his brother and dad would be there...

"I don't think so, young lady. I'm sure your parents are already at the refugee camp." William said. "I'll need you to come with me, but one of you is going to have to sit in the back where I put people I've arrested."

He studied them for a moment and noticed they were a bit shaken up from the earthquake, probably both mentally and physically.

"Are either one of you injured?" He asked.

@Fallen from Heaven

(Sorry, I just had to add. Police cars have a catch for people trying to steal squad cars. They have a button somewhere in the drivers side area you have to press while shifting from park. It's hidden, and you can't shift from park without it pressed down. In Texas police cars it's hidden under the floor covering, you press it with your foot while shifting. As for the K-9 cars, you can't see the dog from the side windows, only through the windshield. The side windows are tinted so darkly so you can't see the dog and he can't see you. Sorry to nitpick.)

(( @David Parks tags don't work in an edit! Jsyk ;) ))

"I don't think so, young lady," said the cop, "I'm sure your parents are already at the refugee camp. I'll need you to come with me, but one of you is going to have to sit in the back where I put people I've arrested." Sean said nothing, but he already knew he was going to have to. No way was Angel going to want to sit back there. He simply nodded.

"Are either one of you injured?" the cop asked, after looking the two kids over. It must have been pretty obvious they were shaken up (literally), though Angel more than him. Sean shook his head.

"Not if you count a few bruises," he replied, before looking at his new friend. He figured he should let her speak for herself when it came to her injuries, but he later noted to tell the cop about her ankle if she didn't. Just to be safe. "And you can't drop me off at the refugee camp. My brother and dad won't be there," he insisted.

(@xXxKateKaysxXx That's quite alright, not very many people know about that theft failsafe, and the K-9 cars. I used to work for a dealership that only did Police and fleet vehicles. So I know a lot about them, that most people wouldn't. And I'm working on becoming a police officer, so I wanted to show how smart I am.)

William wouldn't budge on this, he wasn't about to leave this boy here. There was no way he'd survive that tsunami, and William wasn't going to be responsible for this boy's death, there was no way he could live with himself and sleep at night if he did. William shook his head at the boy and looked at him and said very sternly.

"I don't think you have a choice, young man. The city has ordered an evacuation and everyone is to obey, that means your father and brother have already left. That means you too, son, I'm not going to leave you here to die. Now since you're smaller than the girl, you can sit in the back, and don't mess with the dog."

Angel looked back and forth as the conversation went on. Tsunami. A tsunami. She knew about those too. Giant waves that crash down and kill millions of people in one go. Oh god, oh god, oh god. She chewed on her thumbnail. Why? Why did all this have to happen to them? It wasn't fair. She was a good person. What had she done to deserve this? She didn't want to die, she didn't want to die!

"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god..." Angel muttered to herself, "We're all going to die, this is the end of the world, it's not fair, oh my god..." She spun around in a full circle, looking around. Hadn't they gone through enough yet? Why did they have to suffer more? It wasn't fair!

"I don't think you have a choice, young man," the cop replied, and Sean felt his face curl into a frown. "The city has ordered an evacuation and everyone is to obey, that means your father and brother have already left."

Sean gulped hard. Just the thought of his brother leaving him made him want to cry. But he didn't. He refused to. But how was he going to find them again? He didn't know where they would be, and he was almost never on his own, at least for long periods at a time.

"That means you too, son," the cop continued, "I'm not going to leave you here to die. Now since you're smaller than the girl, you can sit in the back, and don't mess with the dog." Sean still frowned, even more so at the mention of his height. 'I'm not that much shorter,' he thought to himself, internally pouting. It was bad enough his brother teased him about it, claiming 'he'd grow some day', but now this random guy decided to bring it up too. One day, he decided, he was going to be tall.

At the mention of a dog, though, the boy felt himself grin. He loved dogs. But he was still on a mission of his own, and couldn't be distracted, especially not now. So he wiped it off quickly. He barely even heard Angel's panicking.

William sighed and crossed his arms, and stared at the kid.

"Look, son. I've seen that look before, it's the same one that preps give me before they run. If you run, if something doesn't fall on you, the tsunami will kill you. I'm sure your family is waiting for you at the refugee camp, and in the very unlikely event that they aren't, you can rest assured that we'll find them for you. Now, you can come peacefully, or I can detain you for your own safety and make you come. I'd hate to do that, but I will."

Buck began barking in the car, just barely audible and William looked a bit nervous.

Colin bagan walking further up beach street. His mouth felt dry and foamy. He was thirsty, but where was there to get water? He didn't want that kid busting his chops again and there werent any nearby water foutians the would still be working. He sighed and ingnored his thirst as he kept walking away from the water. The sound of sirens filled air. He thought about how bad it was in other towns and cities like San fransisco.

The cop sighed audibly, before crossing his arms. "Look son," he said. "I've seen that look before, it's the same one that preps give me before they run." Sean would have rolled his eyes, if this wasn't a cop. He wasn't a prep. He almost wished he was. "If you run," the cop continued, "if something doesn't fall on you, the tsunami will kill you." Sean gulped quietly and willed himself not to look at Angel. She was probably freaking out.

"I'm sure your family is waiting for you at the refugee camp, and in the very unlikely event that they aren't, you can rest assured that we'll find them for you." Sean said nothing, but simply fixed the policeman with one of his signature obstinate stares. "Now, you can come peacefully, or I can detain you for your own safety and make you come. I'd hate to do that, but I will." Sean hesitated.

Finally, he nodded. If this cop had to chase after him, not only would it cost his friend time and safety, but also she would have to ride in the cop car alone. He heard a dog bark from the SUV, barely even audible. The cop seemed nervous, and the kid didn't blame him.

The Cop nodded, finally relieved that he wouldn't have chase him down. The tsunami could hit before he caught the boy, and could spell his doom. He couldn't die, he had a wife and three kids to look after.

"Alright, get your friend and lets go." He said.

He waited for them to start towards the SUV, he didn't want to turn around and give them a chance to cheese it.

Angel didn't want to be killed. Just the idea made her shudder in terror. Glancing at Sean and wondering if he'd follow her, she limped over to the SUV and climbed into the front seat. She didn't want to think about Sean in the back or that she was leaving her home behind or that a tsunami was coming and if it reached them, they would not be able to outdrive it. She continued chewing on her thumbnail nervously. Tsunami coming, tsunami coming, tsunami coming. It was the only thought running through her mind as she began to shake with fear. Her breathing quickened in fear.

"Alright, get your friend and lets go," said the cop, but Angel was already limping towards the SUV and had gotten in the front seat. Sean said nothing, but with a sidelong glare at the man, made for the car as well. He suddenly whirled around, looking at the cop.

"If you're a police officer, show us your badge!" he demanded. Even with the looming threat of a tsunami (if that was true), Sean would feel even a bit safer if he knew he wasn't being tricked and kidnapped. It could happen, even after an earthquake. He squinted, hand still on the door handle, ready to grab Angel and run if worst came to worst.

Was this kid serious? William thought to himself. He sighed and pulled his badge off his belt, and then his driver license from his wallet and handed them both to the kid.

"You can't believe I'm an actual K-9 officer by the vehicle, my equipment and the dog? I've been on the force since before you were born." He said. "My badge number is 25768A."

Buck was barking even more, and was pacing back and forth in his kennel, and William looked at Sean impatiently.

"Do you believe me now?" He asked.

Taking a deep breath, Angel flung open the car door. She glared at Sean- though her glare was far from intimidating.

"Get in the freaking car!" she snapped, her voice surprisingly high pitched, "Do you want to get us all drowned in a tsunami? Do you want to put us all through that? We've been offered help and you're pushing it away! I don't want to die, Sean!" She slammed the car door shut again and crossed her arms, slumping down in her seat. She just hoped that he got in the car. Because she did not want to die.

The cop yanked a badge from his belt, then pulled out his driver's license from his wallet. Sean took them and examined them carefully. You could never be too careful. "You can't believe I'm an actual K-9 officer by the vehicle, my equipment and the dog?" the man insisted, and Sean did agree he was being paranoid. Still, it was better to be paranoid than dead. "I've been on the force since before you were born." He said. "My badge number is 25768A."

Sean studied the numbers carefully, before looking back up, satisfied. "Do you believe me now?" the cop asked, and Sean corrected himself, using the man's name, William, as read on his license. Before the boy could reply with even a simple nod or a 'Yeah,' he heard the SUV door fly open and Angel's voice pierce through the air.

"Get in the freaking car!" the girl glared, and Sean immediately felt like a jerk. "Do you want to get us all drowned in a tsunami? Do you want to put us all through that? We've been offered help and you're pushing it away! I don't want to die, Sean!" The door slammed close as quickly as it had opened. Now he felt even worse. He stared down at the ground and handed William's belongings back to him, before trudging towards the SUV and climbing in.

He barely even registered the dog, (though normally he would have been all over the animal excitedly,) and willed himself to peer up at the back of Angel's head. "M'sorry," he mumbled, though so quietly he wasn't sure the girl would hear him. He felt terrible, and realized how selfish he must have been, keeping Angel in danger when she was obviously already petrified.

"It's okay." Angel said, turning around, "I'm sorry I yelled at you, Sean. I just... I'm scared. What if... What if we don't make it out of here?" She hugged her knees to her chest, as if trying to hold herself together. She shuddered.

"I don't want to die." Angel sniffed, ready to burst into tears again. She chewed hard on her lip to stop herself crying. She was trying her hardest to think positively about all of this but it was proving exceptionally hard. She was not good in vaguely unpleasant situations, let alone full on crisises like this.

"It's okay," Angel said quietly, and turned around in her chair, surprising the boy. "I'm sorry I yelled at you, Sean. I just... I'm scared. What if... What if we don't make it out of here?" The girl curled herself into a ball, hugging her knees to her chest, and Sean could tell she wanted to cry. "I don't want to die." He didn't blame her.

"Hey," the kid smiled softly, scooting forward in his seat so the two could see each other. "You have nothing to be sorry about... I'm the one being a jerk here." Even saying the words stung, but he ignored it and focused on his friend. "You have a right to be scared. Believe it or not, I am too." He felt a knot in his stomach, not used to being so vulnerable to anyone he didn't know exceptionally well. "I mean, c'mon, this is scary. Most adults I know would be peeing their pants right about now." While that was very untrue, he said it to make her feel better. "And look at you! You're tough, I can tell, even if you don't think so." He paused for breath, then continued. "I don't wanna die either, really. I don't think anybody does. I'm sorry for being a paranoid pain in the butt; it's just what I'm used to, I guess." The realization of what he'd just said kicked in, and his eyes widened. "N-not that that's an excuse," he stammered, waving his hands to show his distress.
