There was a rhythm. Deep breathes, in and out. Steady. In a world where everything was unsteady this sound had remained the same. She woke early. And lay next to him. The slow deep breathes. The undisturbed morning. It felt fresh, unique, and still had the faintest glimmer of hope. Taking in the sight of his chest rise and fall.
Moving slowly, her head went to his chest, her raven curls covering his forearm. Savoring the moments. The moments of safety and security. Her ear listened to his heart. The strong rhythm was alluring. Sleep longed to take her back. Back to before-before everything had changed.
Ten months ago it had gone dark. All electricity had ceased. Cars stopped working. Lights were useless. Anything that required electricity seemed foolish to keep around.
Rachel had been an elementary school teacher. It had been several months before schools closed completely-or at least the one she’d been at.
Daughter of a military officer Rachel hadn’t ever been one to stay somewhere long. She decided to go to Philadelphia. It was 70 miles away. She wanted to find her sister.
She’d been fine the first few days. Then after day 5 she’d been mugged. Water and food stolen she continued on her way hoping to come across a town soon. On the second day he (y/c) had found her.
That eight months ago. At first it had started as friendship and then it had deepened.
Rachel had never found her sister. After the first winter without electricity she’d moved with a group to a warmer climate. Through several people she’d learned that her sister Lauren had gone to Atlanta in hopes a milder winter.
And now here lay Rachel, her ear to his chest. Winter was coming. Their food supply dwindled more and more each day. In the last few weeks Rachel had begun taking smaller portions, complaining of a stomach bug. But the reality was there. If they wanted to survive they’d have to join a group or head south for the winter.
***This is a romance base, with an action thrown in. I wanted to leave it open ended. Please come with your own back story and additions. I love to combine and even break a story thread for discussion. Please come with ideas. Ideally your character would play the male protagonist. And occasionally we would add perspective from other POV. Just send a message if you’re interested.***
