After fight wrap up. [Chrysanthemum Petals in Rain]

Ok, you have 9 stable ronin, one dead magistrate, Shizue took over the investigation and sent someone on horseback to notify the town yoriki and the governor. The yoriki will be along shortly to collect statements, however Shizue is still in charge so she can direct an investigation as she sees fit.

((Basically this post is concerned with what happens between the end of the fight and the rest of the festival. I will be writing a mod wrap up post that assumes you don't get arrested/killed nor do you burn down the city and other such things. If there's things you'd like to do after the mod's conclusion they should go in that thread. report to npc's, research stuff, etc. etc. To speed this thread up, post the associated rolls for anything you're going to do. E.G. I interrogate someone (5k3+2 awareness/invest) or I search something (6k3 percept/invest) and I'll roll for you on a dice bot.))

Mai will help search the area for pertinent evidence. At least she will start doing that, if Shizue tells her to do something she'll probably do that.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Perception Investigation: 4k3

looking for any papers or clues as to why the magistrate believed as he did

Perception Hunting: 5k3

looking for any tracks of other people who might have been around and seen things (keep in mind I did know about Katsu sneaking around)

Int Lore:Law: 4d10+4

for the relevance of stuff I might see/hear/find

----

10 on searching for papers, just his notes on spots to observe for the race.

23 on lore law, will update as needed.

26 on track, no prints.

I inquire of my comrades (who appear to know something is up) as to what exactly is going on. Aside from being the highest rank status samurai present, why is Shizue claiming jurisdiction over the affair? Does anyone have any notable enemies or reasons as to why this magistrate would try sicking these peasants on us with claims that we were maho-tsukai?

Mai is likewise confused and tells Gregor she has no idea why the magistrate would think they were maho-tsukai.

Katsu will shrug his shoulders and indicate he has no idea as to why a Seppun is claiming jurisdiction over what seems to be a Unicorn matter.

Other than that, he has no idea why this obviously corrupt magistrate would attempt to apprehend us on false charges. Clearly, he wasn't a very intelligent corrupt magistrate if he thought that 12 poorly armed peasants would suffice against a group of samurai.

Shiori agrees with Katsu. If Shizue asks for help investigating she will give it, otherwise she'll mind her own business.

**Chuckling** "That is an astute observation Bayushi-sama. He even seemed to be well-informed of our actions in the past (mine at the very least), and yet could not contrive an appropriate force to defeat us. Perhaps he was even less qualified to maintain his position as magistrate than I initially thought. If that is the case, we have certainly done the Unicorn a favor"

Even more evidence of his incompetence. If you wished to ambush someone, it seems foolish to so obviously indicate to your targets that you are familiar with them beyond normal reason. It would put them on their guard, and make them suspicious.

However, for the life of me, I can not fathom why he would wish to attack any of us.

As to doing the unicorn favors, *shrugs* I prefer not to claim to be doing favors through the death of samurai.

"Earlier in our travels I was tasked by an Emerald Magistrate to investigate the matter of the monk Irozu. I received a letter from the monk saying that he had heard something about a meeting in unicorn lands with a Yan We. Seeing as I suspect this man of being the aforementioned Yan We, he was under suspicion. Seeing as he has now proven he was untrustworthy, I am declaring that this falls under my jurisdiction in my investigation. I am doing nothing to jeopardize our innocence, seeing as we have the testimony of these 9 men as well as ourselves to prove that this man accused of us being Maho-Tsukai and orchestrated an attack against us."

I'll roll any Lore (law) necessary: 4k2

I'm also looking for any evidence on him. If possible, I'd like to investigate his rooms too, looking for anything to corroborate the letter from the monk. The roll is 10k3 whether it's perception or awareness.

"I see, how very odd. Do we have any evidence that the note in fact came from the monk, or might it be a further part of this ambush deception?

Assuming that this note was from this monk, would that imply we were lured to this festival with the express intent of this attack, or do you believe it a coincidence?

On further thought, do we have any reason to suspect that this monk is not involved in these ambushes? If it is as you say and he left this note, this is twice his advice has led to us being attacked. It seems likely to me he should be a suspect in this investigation of yours.

Either way, I wish you the best of luck in your investigation."

On investigation you rolled a 36. Nothing of much interest is easily visible on his corpse, if we're assuming the eta have showed up already then still nothing interesting. However you find a false bottom in the saddle bag of his pony. It contains a few notes, all ciphered.

"The monk is under investigation, whether he is helping or hindering hasn't been decided yet."

OOC: Shizue is status 3, everyone but Shiori is status 1, so if she says she's taking over, she's taking over. If you have a problem with it, you can take it up with someone else. And she will say as much if you argue with her about it.

OOC: Katsu has no intent of arguing about it with anyone, as long as he's not a suspect, he doesn't really care. He is simply shrugging and wandering off to his other assignments. He is more than happy to leave the problem in Shizue's hands.

Gregor is satisfied with this explanation. Internally, he's not pleased to be once again meddling in the matters of that eccentric monk. However, he will be helpful in wrapping up the present situation, seeing that Yan We was a madman with ulterior motives and the peasants were clearly manipulated. Given the time and opportunity, he would like to speak with the governor about the context of Yan We's appointment as magistrate.

Gregor is pleased that the general opinion of Irozu has not drifted toward total trust.

OOC: My previous inquiry was not an attempt at disrespect or argument, rather a hope to be informed of what is going on since Gregor is still in the dark. Also, Shizue has never flexed her status before. So, to some degree, Gregor's become comfortable treating her as a peer, ally, and companion rather than a superior. If Shizue wants to make it clear that she outranks Gregor, he will change his behavior appropriately.

Shizue indicated she's letting Agasha Mai inspect the papers, Mai give me intelligence calligraphy (ciphers) using the level of ciphers you had after the mod end.

The yoriki finish taking statements and escort you back to the town, and to the governors mansion. You are ushered in without a wait and the senior yoriki speaks into the governors ear for a minute before being dismissed. The man looks you over with a frown, although you feel it's not directed at you.

"Apparently my magistrate was not the honorable man he appeared. He escorted you into an ambush of Ronin, who'd been informed that they were arresting practicers of Maho. These arrests were never mentioned to me, his yoriki, nor recorded in his official logs. Along with your testimony of his actions there is enough evidence to condemn him." His brow creases slightly as he turns to look out a window over the city. "I've sent for a replacement magistrate, my remaining yoriki can keep order until then. I would appreciate if you did not discuss these issues with all of our guests merely trying to enjoy Unicorn hospitality. I invite you to try and forget this insult and enjoy the upcoming race, do you have any remaining questions on these matters?"

I believe I have a queued 'how'd this guy become a magistrate?' question. Anything else you want to ask, or state (a.k.a. if you think this is related to something and want to investigate, let the governor know.')

Ok you got a 32.

you notice that these are using the same cipher as you the journal you copied. Over the next couple days using the Cipher emphasis you'll decode the documents. One of them appears to be a report the magistrate was creating. He discusses slipping your names into the invitation lists and finding a group of Ronin who wouldn't ask any questions. One of the other papers is in a different hand then the magistrates, and seems to be the end of a several page document. "..is the last we could find on forced activation. Perhaps other avenues of research into the Ashalan will be more fruitful. We were able to find information on the location of the outpost. We have pinpointed the likeliest area for the outpost, near the northern end by Iyotisha, see the attached guide for more details." Written in on the bottom of this page in the magistrates hand is "Sent word for 4 and 5 to recover." Another page you are pretty sure you decoded correctly, but it's not a language you can read. The last page is written in the same hand as the second, it's written like directions. "The border between Kyuden Miya and Shiro Usagi will be the least patrolled. You can reach the northern edge of the Shinomen forest by passing between them. Following the northern edge should allow you to locate the following landmarks." It proceeds to describe a series of landmarks.

Replying to the magistrate question.

The Daimyo looks thoughtful for a moment before replying. "Nothing seemed that out of the ordinary with his promotion to magistrate here. Our current magistrate had died to some foul Ronin criminals who resisted arrest. I selected my replacement from the surrounding offices as is my custom, Yan-We had the best record for quickly concluding cases."

Ok, Mai will turn the deciphered pages over to Shizue and point out that she can't read the one in the other language (ps is there a spell for that?).

She will also convey any knowledge she can fill in from the details about locations involved.

Geography: Shinomen forest is large forest stretching from southern unicorn lands down to scorpion lands. The two castles mentioned aren't far from the forest.

History: Iyotisha was one of the Naga cities. It didn't survive the great sleep and is mostly ruins now.

FolkLore and Legend: The Ashalan are/were a race of powerful sorcerers who lived in/beyond the burning sands. You broke a 35 on this so there's a reasonable bit of information but these are stories and fairytales, so it's hard to tell what's true/relevant. They are often referred to as immortal, and are often shown as being opposed to the Naga. One creation myth tells of them forming the world using the power of Shadow.

There's no real applicable roll for the directions, other then the one part mentioning avoiding patrols it's just a set of landmarks and bearings.

Lore:Gaijin : Reinforces what you know about the Ashalan. Human looking sorcerers, prolific slavers very little of their population was actually made up of true Ashalan. They were the crafters who made Crysteel weapons.

If anyone wants to ask Shiori about the paper in the different language, she speaks Thrane, and could tell you whether or not this language was Thrane. I'm guessing it's not OOC.

Regarding lore Gaijin, you rolled well enough to recognize a few words on the other document that are names of locations, you think the language is senpet.
