Advice/Help Advice for this site.

I'm an experienced roleplayer with the attitude of a noob, so I usually make laid back roleplays with firm, but fair rules. Every site is different though so I figure I would ask for any advice regarding the people of this site. What do you like to see in roleplays? What turns up your nose? What hooks you? Is story development your main goal, or is it more character development? Do you go for slice-of-life, mystery, fantasy, horro, or sci-fi more? Or are you more a combination person? Anything is helpful.

Alright, since this is a super broad set of questions, I will be answering it as regards my own personal tastes rather than any general rule or trend.

What do you like to see in roleplays?

What turns up your nose?
I'm not sure what you mean?

What hooks you?
-Start by having a title that either has something I'm interested in in the title or is quirky enough to catch my curiosity
-Rules and style that give me some assurance my style of roleplay is not only acceptable in the roleplay, but that I can expect the roleplay itself to want to provide that kind of style (this mostly regards to tone, type of faceclaims and detail)
-An interesting idea that plays to my current interests and I can long-term potential in
-Wording and framing choices suggestive of the GM being the kind I can put my trust in and would want to work with

I'm not hard to hook to begin with, though it is much harder not to f*ck it up.

Is story development your main goal, or is it more character development?
I find this to be a false dichotomy. In my eyes, if these aren't both happening simulatenously, you're doing something wrong, as at any point you're either ignoring the character or ignoring the story, neither of which you should ever do.
If really, really pressed for a preference, I would still have to say "both" or "it depends". I guess I typically focus more on character development, but I build the characters in the way I do in the first place with the story in mind.

Do you go for slice-of-life, mystery, fantasy, horro, or sci-fi more?
I tend to find myself more in slice-of-life fantasy roleplays, though that is at least in part due to a lot of the hooking requirements only happening here. I definitely enjoy mystery and scifi, but they are often made in a way that just doesn't appeal to me.

My favorite genre of all is comedy. This is followed by my other favorite genres, fantasy, slice of life, isekai, magical girl, game and battle. Only ones I can't do are horror, the punks and historical.

Or are you more a combination person?
I guess? Depends on what you mean exactly.

If you're looking to learn more about the members of this site, there is a relatively fast way to do it:
1. Read people's interest checks
2. Read the discussion forums (existing discussions)

People lay out what they like in interest checks (well, many do. The rest usually have some 3-4 lines of interest check anyway, so they are easy to skip), and dicussion forums is usually where people give advise or go more in depth about their personal tastes.

Hope this helps, good luck and happy Rping!

I was looking for personal opinions.

I'm not sure what you mean?
I mean what makes you turn away from a roleplay, I guess I wasn't as obvious as I thought.

Alright, noted.

They are entirely different, which is why I asked which you prefer. Much like cake and ice cream on a birthday, both are usually preferred, but it wont ruin the day if they aren't both had. I asked because many prefer developing a story but having a basic character so they can enjoy the story, or because they themselves aren't that complicated in the first place. Others enjoy getting to know their characters and how they will react in the story rather than where the story is going itself.

I tend to find myself more in slice-of-life fantasy roleplays, though that is at least in part due to a lot of the hooking requirements only happening here. I definitely enjoy mystery and scifi, but they are often made in a way that just doesn't appeal to me.

I thank you for the sub genre add-ins, but I prefer to leave them broad. It's hard to plan an entire roleplay around comedy or magical girls in my opinion. To do so would focus on character development and lack in storyline; and I focus on story development. You end up with people telling jokes for no reason and that don't make sense, as well as people transforming in much the same way.

"Oh she hiccuped and transformed by accident." That isn't how a magical girl transformation works.

I guess? Depends on what you mean exactly.
Again, I thought I was being clear with this. I even put it after the genre question for that reason. I was asking if you liked horror alone, or horror/sci-fi mix; sci-fi/fantasy; slice-of-life/fantasy, so on.

While this is helpful, I didn't do it because I wanted specific answers to specific questions without hunting through dozens of pre-posted threads only to have to search through hundreds of pre-posted replies to find what I wanted. Also this was a good way to meet people, though it seems people on here are fairly stiff, and I thought it would be a good way to introduce myself and get a beat on people. As my introduction post only had a few replies, and even fewer replied multiple times- if any did at all. I cannot remember.

Now something else I should type here, since it seems I come across this problem fairly often; I am not being snubbish, standoffish, stuck up, or anything else. This is simply how I speak- in real life, too, yes- and it appears people are not used to it, so they find me cold and even mean. I am not. It is only in how you are reading it.

Please do not let it dissuade you from roleplaying with me though, I don't roleplay in the same manner I speak and type normally. Thank you for your help.

  • I like chill RPs with decent writing, some communities call it "lazy literate".
  • I avoid threads that have pretentious-sounding players. I've already gone through my elitism phase.
  • Comedy. I like humorous writing, humorous circumstances, and cheeky characters.
  • Man, fuck the plot. I'm all about that character development, or even just exploring difference personalities in an RP.
  • I go for soft sci-fi, adventures, near-future, mid-to-low fantasy, and really just anything I don't have to think too hard about. I think enough at work. This is playtime.

-I'm basically the same way, I try to avoid "purple prose". (using too much detail)
-I can understand that. I hate when players want a specific length and wording structure, so on. My thing is, if you post a response that is only a few sentences long, but can be built off of by another player, let it ride.
-I never was good with comedy as a main genre. I've always viewed it as a sub-genre.
-I usually choose plot between the two, and it usually works well because players who choose character usually let the plot flow and don't try to change it or bump it up to their liking, but enjoy what is already written.
-I get that. I love fantasy for much the same reason. And sci-fi. I love robots and floating cars and wormholes. I love to think, but I want to think about something fun instead of coding or medical crap.

Thanks for the response! It was insightful and thought out.

What do you like to see in roleplays?

1. World building and fleshing out the setting. I have several color coded folders on Google Docs dedicated to fleshing out animals, worlds, magic systems and more.
2. I turn away from roleplays that are focused solely on romance or that have no planning and just sort of expect people to jump in right away.
3. Neither, see point 1. I mostly do world building for my roleplays, I love fleshing out worlds. Beyond that I like to place characters in said worlds and see them interact with it/each other.
4-5. I love what is considered fantasy and realistic or modern on this site. Basically these are roleplays set in a made up universe OR roleplays set in a version of our own universe. Typically my roleplays have a magical element in them although occasionally they might have superheroes instead. I am also a huge fan of fanatastical and mythological beasts and beings so I'm always adding them into plots.

1 & 3. I think you're the first person I've met who is more into the world than the story or character building. I'm glad to have done so, it's quite enlightening.
2. I dont enjoy either of those, personally. I am fine with romance elements, but not as a main story. Also I do my best to provide a beginning to my roleplays so people aren't stumped on how to jump in.
4 & 5. I enjoy adding magic into a standard version of earth, so I understand that as well.

Thank you for your time.

Saludos, señor. It seems you are in need of some assistance and some conversation. Though I'm sorely lacking in the former, I like chatting quite a bit—so I will answer your questions.

What do you like to see in roleplays?

That is a very interesting question and I cannot help but answer it in an interesting manner: it's certainly not a matter of what I like to see in a roleplay, but more of what I like to see in the people who man the roleplay. I like camaraderie, just chatting, making friends, having fun and everything, and if all those come around and we're all in good understanding of each other then the roleplay will turn out just finely.

What turns up your nose?

Though, I'll be perfectly honest, I still have some preferences in me—can't help but be partial to some things, which include: roleplays or creators with a good sense for the literary, unique prose, unconventional premises, etc.

What hooks you?

Good folks, is all.

Is story development your main goal, or is it more character development?

That's a difficult question to answer, at least for me. Personally, I like to write a lot—I just jam in all these words and dialogues and unnecessary details, in the maximalist vein, that I just as well end up focusing on both setting and character. I will say, however, that development of the character comes more naturally than development of the setting, which is more deliberately done.

Do you go for slice-of-life, mystery, fantasy, horro, or sci-fi more?

Good question. I haven't had much exposure to fantasy or sci-fi when it comes to literature, genre fiction mostly—my days were spent with Jorge Luis Borges, Carlos De Fuentes, Don Delillo, Umberto Eco etc, those type of writers and all—, so I've always held this detachment towards selecting particular genres. Still, if I had to say something, I would definitely choose fantasy as that ground is where I seem to roleplay the most.

So it is not the roleplays you take an interest in, but rather the people in the roleplays, and how well you get along with them. People are are indifferent toward will be roleplays you are indifferent toward. Likewise with people you like and people you don't get along with. That is also a first for me. I've never had a problem where I didn't like a roleplay because I didn't like the people, because to me I don't have to like them to like their character(s).

The only RPs that ever go anywhere on this website are on the rails, with GMs being very active. Or dice.

Sandbox RPs don't last a page, don't understand why people haven't gotten this after 1000 tries. I've yet to see one pass a couple pages.

Avoid stats if you're not in a dice RP. People end up ignoring them in posts and bitching about them OOC. Recently nuked my own RP because of people who didn't have a fucking grip and kept complaining about stats... Stats that served only as a counter to Sues and Stus. A lot of people felt the system was fair but those that didn't.... Maybe u should've unironically told them to live it or leave it.

As far as which things are most popular, look at the interest check section to see which sections have the most new posts.

I know Fandom is #1 but idk about the order after that.

As far as rules go. Try and give people as much agency as possible without compromising your story.
