Fandom Adrift and Afloat, a Pokémon Adventure

Olivia's attention was immediately captured by the captain's words, her heart rate involuntarily increasing thanks to the mild adrenaline rush she was now feeling. "You've seen Lugia before!? Like in person!?" She asked with wide eyes and an undeniable enthusiasm to her voice. Perhaps today was going to be the day that she finally got her big break as a photographer.

She was absolutely captivated by the gradual cultural shift as they got closer and closer to the harbor. Buildings got less towering, sites became more traditional in appearance, and the smell of fresh fish and salt was prominent in the air. She couldn't wait to get on the sea.

"Definitely! It was a long time ago... the waters were fiery, they were powerful, they were--fierce! It was such a stormy day, it almost seemed like it actually was night. My simple boat at that time was having a hard time struggling with the water... and out of the blue, a figure appeared in the sky... Alia here was the first to sight it... magnificent in the sky. It was a sight to behold. But enough of my old sighting... we've got to see it now, don't we!?"

Even Jun light up by such description. "Definitely!" she blurted out. She patted Olivia on the back. "We're gonna do it, Olivia!" she smiled. They were already nearing the boats, the adventure was about to start.

"Hell yeah we are!" Olivia said with enthusiasm as she looked over at Jun, happy to see her sharing in the photographer's excitement. Even if they didn't see even any signs of Lugia on their voyage, though, she couldn't help but imagine that the adventure would be incredibly enjoyable and exciting nonetheless.

She dashed ahead towards the boat that Captain Jana had indicated as being hers, and she and her Pokemon nimbly climbed up onto the deck without much trouble at all. She truly was a Hoenn native with her strong affinity for the nautical. "I haven't been on a boat since I first headed to Johto!" She shouted at the two who were a little farther down the marina but were steadily making their ways over. Her excitement was electric, as was that of her companions.

Jun noticed Olivia was very excited and eager to go, even rushing onto the boat, and she giggled to herself. Jun carefully entered the boat and helped Raijin in. Koia and Shui were already trotting around the boat, while Jana had gone in and prepared the engines. "Ahoy, we be sailing now with ye olde Captain!"

--

An hour into the trip, the sky started to turn black and little drops of water started to fall. "Oi, you two, come inside!" Jana gestured for them to come inside the little cabin with big windows that made the captain's place. Once inside, she gave them two sandwiches each, as she munched on hers. "Gotta stay well-fed! How's the trip going so far? It seems a big storm is coming... let's hope not to get embroiled in the eye of the storm. Not sight of Lugia either for now... but this might be a good herald!"

"Lugia is known for causing tornados and storms, so it could definitely be behind this natural phenomenon," Jun took out her notebook and started scribbling notes.

There were a few boats that could be seen nearby, as well as one or two very small islands they were about to pass through.

Seemingly unperturbed by the impending sea storm, Olivia quickly dashed back out onto the ship deck after scarfing down half of her sandwich. The food was great and tasty, but her words of praise could wait. Her lack of fear at the harsh weather turned to excitement as the familiar sensation of a torrential downpour at sea bombarded her. "This reminds me of how the Kyogre incident felt all those years ago!" She shouted, grinning widely back at her travel companions. While she was only a kid when Kyogre's wrath nearly destroyed the world's ecosystem, that memory was burned forever into her mind.

Off in the distance, a certain scene caught her eye. A large shipping boat appeared to have landed on a small island for some reason, Olivia speculating that it was to do some sort of quick maintenance or just wait out the storm as to not risk losing cargo. She eventually paid no mind to it, her attention instead turning to the ground where Garland stood bravely against the elements. Agatha and Theodora were content to just relax in the warm, dry safety of the boat cabin.

Jun, contrary to Olivia, stayed for a while completely immersed in her thoughts and scribbling notes every now and then as she took littles bites out of her sandwiched. She had also been trying to draw Olivia from behind, but didn't like how it came out, so she scribbled on top of it. She caressed Agatha and Theodora who were staying inside, allured by the prospect of tranquility. Eventually, after maybe a quarter of an hour which had seemed an eternity to Jun, Corsola started to poke on her leg, signalling her to go outside because she wanted to. Jun simply smiled, picked Corsola up, and, followed by Raijin and Shui, went outside.

Jana and Olivia were both outside. The rain was still falling, although slowly. Jun looked up: the clouds, though, were incredibly dark, and didn't seem to be dispersing either. Something was caught in the corner of her eye, however, and she shifted her eyes towards a small island, where smoke and fire was coming out of a large boat that seemed just stationed on the island. "Uhm, Jana..." Jun didn't know how to convey what was happening and simply poked at both Olivia and Jana's shoulder and pointed with her fingers towards the lonely island, now a bit far behind. What she started to notice, though, was that something... or someone, was coming right at them. Her clouded, raindrop-filled glasses were making her sight quite useless, and yet she thought she'd seen someone familiar. "Olivia, do you think they are...?"

The sight of the billowing smoke caught Olivia's eye when Jun called her attention to the burning, sinking vessel off in the distance. Seeing as how her vision was minimally affected by the deluge and the fact that she had access to her camera's zoom lens, she was able to catch a better glimpse of the scene. The main sources of motion that caught her eye were a trio of easily-spotted, vibrantly colored, and glittering Pokemon who were moving rapidly around the vessel and a number of water-type Pokemon who appeared to have a trio of trainers on their backs. "It's Nat and Jin, I'm pretty sure... What the hell are they doing out here?" She asked with a look of confusion on her face as she lowered her camera.

She looked at Jun and the Captain, unsure of what the protocol was for a situation like this. She was immediately worried that their ship had crashed thanks to the storm and left them stranded out in the sea. Her immediate reflex was to try and help them out, but ultimately it was the Captain's call

Jun remained silent. "Are they your friends?" Jun simply nodded. "Then we should try and help them out, no captain would feel proud of leaving stranded people behind!" Jana left for the cabin and started heading for the island. Yet, it was to no avail. Almost immediately, they saw Nat, Jin atop a Lapras. To their side, there was a Milotic with another woman atop it. They couldn't discern who it was, but they saw she had black hair styled in a bob-cut, much like Jana's. She was also dressed in a captain attire, all white, even with a white cap, that Jana recognised. She was rather slender, though, and seemed to be talking to the two Araquanid that were to the sides of both the Milotic and the Lapras. Jana looked at this and stopped the boat, signalling for them to come aboard if they wished.

Jun waved at them peacefully.

-

"What a coincidence to find them here, isn't it Nat? I will handle the story, a'right?" Jin murmured in Nat's right ear.

"Ye' thought ye'd get rid of us so easily, blue and..." there was a slight pause, as if she was looking for a nickname, "... purple?" was what Jin, half-laughing, first uttered upon going up the boat. While Nat, Jin, and all their Pokes had already gotten up the boat, the mysterious woman seemed to still want to be atop the Milotic for a bit, and was directing her Araquanoids to position themselves so as not to bother the boat. Jana was intrigued as to what had happened, and Jin proceeded to explain that the boat they were in had crashed because of the storm and because some raiders attempted to steal the boat and the cargo that they were delivering... eventually, Jin said that the raiders were able to escape with most of the cargo in their Pokemon's backs, and so they had left the boat there. Jun seemed enthralled by the two Araquanids, since they were slightly different in coloring, but not like a Shiny, it was weird and Jun had never seen something like that.

Nat smiled softly as the Verdant admins were reunited with the interesting young women they had met at dinner the night before. Coiled around her body was a long, bright red, centipede-shaped Pokemon with fiery x-shaped whiskers and deep green carapace and legs. Its head was resting on her shoulder. "Hello again you two." She said as her other two Pokemon companions flew over, her bright green Masquerain acquainting itself with Jana's Surskit as her deep blue Yanmega rested its wings by perching on top of the ship's cabin. It would appear she didn't feel comfortable bringing her unevolved Pokemon onto the open ocean with her.

She was quite satisfied with Jin's cover-story, Nat always finding herself able to trust in the upbeat woman's charisma. "Oh, I don't believe you've met our friend Arifa yet." She said as she turned to face their group's water-type specialist who was still in the water. "She's the one who coordinated the rescue effort."

Olivia couldn't help but think that all three of the women before her were incredibly cool, her photographer's reflexes almost compelling her to snap a photo but she managed to stop herself as to not be rude. "If you three wouldn't mind, could I get a photo? You and your Pokemon are all just radiating this confident heroism!" She said with gleaming eyes, inspiration having struck her profoundly.

Jun's mind at this point didn't know what was more mesmerising: the sight of not one, but two non-shiny, variant-colored Araquanids; or the sight of Natascha with a Pokemon she had never before seen coiled around her body. It was a fire Pokemon, apparently? But it was also a centipede. And, as far as Jun knew, there was only one Centipede Pokemon, and that was the Venipede and its evolution. She waved at Natascha and smiled at Jin. Jun also noticed that not all of the Pokemon that accompanied them were present this time. Jin's Maractus and Petilil were there, snuggling onto her. While none of Nat's Pokemon were there but the centipede, and a Yanmega and a Masquerian, again in Shiny form, and she promptly concluded they had to be Nat's, such vivid impression of Natascha... full of Shiny Pokemon would never leave her mind.

At the mention of Arifa, Jun again looked outside the boat and away from the centipede. Finally Arifa was coming on board. Her Pokemon were very big, completely opposite to either Jin's or Nat's until now. Upon her coming on board, Jun heard the enthusiastic cries of Olivia, who wanted to take a photo of the three trainers.

While Arifa tried to dry her short hair with her hands, Jin, again, answered, blushing just a little: "Ah, but of course, mister lady purple! It wu'ld be an honor to be photographed by such an adept photographer. Uh, just give me a moment, I'll have to convice my dear Nat here, but rest assured, no one can melt Nat's icy heart other than your resident Jin," she laughed and gave an air of confidence, then turned towards Nat. Arifa, meanwhile, wasn't exactly paying attention, but decided to introduce herself nonetheless. "Must I take it that I've been already introduced?" She asked, "In any case, I am Arifa... and these four out there are my Pokemon".

Natascha did her best to hide her blushing at all the new attention she had garnered from the particularly eager photographer and her equally eager companion. "Well... I suppose a photo couldn't hurt..." She said, not making eye contact with Olivia out of fears of becoming further embarrassed by her bright, enthralled eyes. She certainly couldn't say no to that much sheer enthusiasm. "Does this composition work?" She asked Olivia, moving to stand between Jin and Arifa with the bright blue sea glimmering behind them. Her Centiskorch unwound from her body before scuttling over to Jun and flopping its head down on her feet affectionately.

"You and your Pokemon are really cool, Arifa! It's super neat to meet you guys!" Olivia chimed with a toothy grin, making certain her lens was configured correctly and that she was an ideal distance away from them for the perfect photo. "And yeah! You all look great!" She said, taking numerous photos with different settings to capitalize on the opportunity. She didn't know if or when she'd encounter the Verdant admins again, after all!

Jun watched as Nat moved around to pose for the photo. Jin seemed to very eagerly hug and play around Nat and Arifa in all the photos. While Arifa seemed rather disinterested, a gleam of a smile could be seen every now and then. Meanwhile, the centipede that had been coiled around Nat had now gone over to Jun, who looked at it surprised. She looked calmly at it at first, observing it and taking out her little notebook in order to jot down some peculiar things. But as soon as she was able to, she crouched and simply enjoyed the moment, patting the centipede and feeling its body, too. It was hot and crusty. The centipede seemed to be enjoyed itself, too, as it let out a few happy cries.

"Thank you." said Arifa to Olivia's comments; while Jin was a bit more enthusiastic, "Thank you dear! We are honored, yet again!". It seemed like Nat was just basking in the affection, and Jin thought that was great and a great opportunity to play around, poking at Nat's cheeks for example.

Suddenly, Jana, who had been observing feeling rather excluded, chimed in. A bit timidly, she asked: "May I get a picture captain-to-captain...?" She was referring to Arifa, who was dressed in a captain attire. "I don't have a camera, so it'd be neat if you could take it for me, Olivia... oh and we should also take a group one, don't you think!"

Olivia documented every moment of the trio's goofy antics with her camera's lens, and her excitement (somehow) grew even greater when Jana came to her as well. "Yeah, definitely! Sorry, I didn't think you wanted to be in the picture!" She said cheerily, waiting for Jana and Arifa to get into a pose they liked before capturing the moment. "Alright! Let's do a group pic next!" She said as she looked over at Jun and her Pokemon, moving to get her tripod out of her bag and set it up. As she did so, her three companion Pokemon rushed over and got comfy at the feet of the ship's unexpected guests.

Natascha's demeanor seemed to have brightened considerably by the displays of friendship before her, turning to face Jin, whose affections seemed to not be bothering her in the slightest for a change. "This is quite a refreshing change of pace from ten minutes ago, no...?" She asked, placing a hand on her own chin as she leaned back against Jana's shoulder. The scene was a perfect example of the world she was striving to help create, but it was just as enjoyable even when not seen from her perspective as Verdant Boss.

"Ooh, bold of ye' t' say that," she teased. Her expression immediately relaxed, a smile—a subtle smile, as if reminiscing bygone times—appeared on her face, "but y'know, ah'm happy too." Jin then slowly and lightly placed her hand on Nat's cheek, caressing it for a moment until--"Okay pair of lovebirds, get ready for the group photo," shouted Jana who had noticed everything was setup and Olivia was waiting, Jin's cheeks flushed slightly and she looked away trying to hide it. Out of reflex, and Jin started thinking she must've looked really dumb.

After everyone gathered together, the photo was taken; all of Jun's babies tried to fit on it, Koia stealing Shui's favourite spot—Jun's head—, the other two having to conform themselves with her shoulders.

"Seems like the storm is dying down... no sight of Lugia though, and it seems we are out of luck, since we're pretty near the coast already, huh,"
Jana pondered out loud.

Olivia scrambled to show the others on-board the photo she had taken of them, her eyes glittering with pride thanks to the (in her eyes) absolutely perfect snap she had taken. She was too pleased with how it all turned out to really be disappointed by Jana's news. "Ah, damn, really? Guess that's to be expected." She said with a soft grumble before perking back up. "Jun! Did you see the photo yet?" She asked, rushing over to her friend to show her anyway.

Natascha couldn't help but think that being so close to Jin was a nice feeling, if one that she still wasn't quite used to yet. "All of your partners are so well-behaved... Not to mention considerably photogenic..." She praised, holding her arm out for her Yanmega to land and perch on for a bit.

Olivia's upbeat mood considerably lifted Jun's mood right after what Jana had said. After all, even if she wanted to see Lugia really badly, nothing could really compare to having fun with Olivia at this moment, and she'd cherish these moments always.

"Oh, it looks perfect!" Jun said, then Nat spoke. "Oh-th-thank you, yours are incredible too, not to mention so extravagant! As for photogenic, I think that's more of an Olivia's merit!" Jun laughed and wrapped her arm around Olivia's shoulder. Normally, she'd be spacing out and checking more thoroughly that blue Yanmega, but right now she was pretty upbeat following Olivia's mood. Jin unconsciously mimicked Jun, and also wrapped her arm around Nat. She caressed Yanmega lightly in a carefree manner. "Rumour has it she's the Queen of Shinies," Jin nodded twice, again praising her companion in a quirky, funny way. "Oh," suddenly Jin light up, "should we exchange numbers with everyone?" she whispered into Nat's ears.

Natascha thought on Jin's question before nodding and fishing out her Pokegear from her coat pocket. "I suppose that is as good an idea as any, Jin." She whispered back, realizing that would be the only way for them to get the picture Olivia had taken of the group. "You'll require our numbers to send the finished photos, am I wrong?" She asked Olivia and Jun, a subtle smile curling at the corners of her lips.

Jun's arm around her shoulder felt pretty nice, but she'd unfortunately have to break away for a few moments to handle Natascha's (really Jin's) request. "Oh, definitely! Here!" Olivia said with a bright smile as she made her way over to where the Admins were standing and held her Pokenav up a short distance away from their devices. In her experience, exchanging numbers was the easiest way to confirm whether or not a person was her friend or not, and she was quite thrilled to have made three super cool friends at the same time.

"Oh, exchanging numbers are we? I'm in!" Jana exclaimed as she left the boat's wheel to go gather with everyone, pulling out her PokeGear in the process. Jun also managed to get her PokeGear out, while Jin and Ari also had theirs out. "I also need our picture, and you can always hit me up for a boat-ride, or anything really, can get pretty lonely out here, it's a good thing I have this baby with me," she said as she petted Aria, her Surskit. "Oh, we are always up for some fun, of course." "Busy lately, though." "Don't be such a killjoy, Ari!" Everyone exchanged their numbers, and before they knew it, they were already near the coast. The storm had subdued, and the sun rose from above the clouds beautifully now.

"Guess this is the end of our trip, then!" exclaimed Jana as she got off the boat and lead everyone towards the center of the port. "It was the most fun I'd had in a some months for sure! Even Aria is excited!" she looked at the Surskit, who was hopping around and caressing everyone with its spindly legs. Jun was intently writing something on her notebook, but she felt really melancholic inside, it really had been fun being with all of them. Jin was the first to come up with an answer to ease everyone's hearts at the farewell, "Ah, do not worry my dear, we shall all meet again, fate tells me so," although she really believed it, her voice intended to be funny, as if imitating a medieval person, for no reason at all other than getting everyone's into more light spirits.

Natascha gave the trio a gentle wave, her demeanor as cool and composed as always. "Until we meet again. Stay kind." She said with a tone of subtle determination, every single syllable of her words containing her convictions about a gentler, more caring world for Pokemon and their partners alike. If the world wasn't so absorbed with the trivial, things like professional battle tournament leagues, luxury Pokemon products and fashion shows, and what have you, perhaps there would be more genuine and worthwhile interactions such as the one which took place on the boat. She was more than happy to have them inherit Team Verdant's better world.

"Yeah! We've got each other's numbers, so we can kinda just meet up whenever!" Olivia said with her usual enthusiasm, feeling only the slightest sadness about having to say farewell to the others for a while. After all, it was hard to feel bad when there was an entirely new part of the world right in front of her. "Thanks so much for taking us, Captain!" She said, beaming as she ran over and almost tackled Jana in a tight hug.

"Wahh, thank you! Ah, welcome!" Jana was surprised at Olivia's sudden movement. Either way, it was good. Meanwhile, Jun waved at the three Verdant admins who now walked towards the city. Jana then surprised both Olivia and Jun and hugged them, Aria mimicked her and also did her part. "Farewell it is, then!" With that, Jana slowly went back to her boat, waving to Jun and Olivia who now also departed towards the city. "Goodbye, thank you!!" shouted Jun before leaving.

"How are you liking Olivina, Olivia? Look over there," she point southeast, where a big lighthouse stood on a cliff next to the port, "that's the Glitter Lighthouse! Jasmine is there, have I told you she actually was the one who gifted me Raijin? Well she was! You definitely gotta met her, and I need to check up on her too--oh oh, you can even have a battle, since she's Olivine's famed Gym Leader! Ah, but should we go eat before that, I want you to try akashiyaki--maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, I'm just excited to come back home!" Jun was indeed very excited, and again went on to talk about a lot of things, just like when she'd told Jun about all the kinds of food one could find over Johto.

Olivia was only slightly overwhelmed by all of the things that Jun was telling her at once, not quite used to being on the receiving end of such intense enthusiasm as opposed to being the source of it. She certainly couldn't blame her friend for being so excited, though, as she'd probably (read: definitely) do the same once their boat docked at Slateport in Hoenn. "Let's do all of that! Maybe one at a time though, since that sounds like a lot!" She said with a laugh and a grin, picking Garland up and holding him in her arms as they walked. Theodora was comfortably slumped on Agatha's back, just going along for the ride.

"Food sounds really good right now. Got a special place you remember from being a kid?" She asked, only wanting the best of the best for herself and her companions. As fun as the boat ride was and as tasty as the sandwiches Captain Jana had prepared for them were, she was absolutely starving for something piping hot. She could tell her partners felt similarly, as their attention was quickly taken anytime they drew a bit too close to a food cart or a restaurant's chimney.

"Oh, indeed!" Jun smiled wholeheartedly. She almost took Olivia's hand to guide her to one of her favourite restaurants, but she refrained, she wasn't sure still how she would take it, and was back too her too-cautious stance that made her overthink completely everything she set her mind on. "Ah, and I do have some favourite places, we shall go to Nishimura, then! Just follow me Olivia." Shui, who had been hoping around, climbed up to her master's head, while Raijin intently watched Agatha and Theodora and Koia, instead, took in the surroudings—unlike Shui and Raijin who had been in Olivine before, Koia had never been here before. Koia walked very close to Jun's leg, rubbing on it every now and then.

hyogo-nishimura-coffee-kobe-25570.jpg

The old, vegetable-ridden building stood on an ascending street in a place that was a bit apart from the city's centre. It didn't seem to be bustling with people, but there were some customers inside. "Here it is, Nishimura! Nice, ain't it? I'll give you my recommendations once inside if you want to try them!" And with that, they entered the restaurant.

"You've got it!" Olivia said with an enthusiastic grin and followed closely behind Jun. As the party made their way towards one of Jun's favorite haunts, Olivia's eyes constantly darted about her surroundings. Whenever she was someplace new, she couldn't help but focus on everything at once, and swiftly whipped around her camera to snap photos of things which caught her eye. Unfortunately for Garland, this meant setting him back down on the ground and making him walk.

When they arrived at the café, Olivia was incredibly captivated by just how charming the overgrown building was. She had never been in a place like it before, so she naturally was inclined to trust in Jun's recommendations. "Alright, sweet! To be honest I'm totally lost about what's good in this part of the world..." She said with a laugh, scratching the back of her head. Now that her camera was away, Garland almost immediately did his grabby hands, to which Olivia shook her head. "Hell no, bud, you got carried last time. It's Theo's turn." She said, crouching down to pick up the slightly limp, sleepy bear instead.

Jun watched as Olivia refused Garland and picked Theo up instead, and she let out a chuckle. Then she pushed open the door. "Oh my, if it isn't little Junny!" a long, dark haired woman shouted as softly as she could from across the counter. "Look who it is, Marian!" Another woman, with short, dark, curly hair popped out of the kitchen. "That's sooner that I thought we'd see Junny here, for sure". "It's been a while, aunties!" the two women, owners of the restaurant, walked up to Jun and pampered and coddled her for a while, especially Jaina. Jun had decided to make it a secret that she was coming, though they did knew she had set afoot on her travels the other day since she'd sent them a message.

They caught up for a while until... "And ohh is this a fellow traveller?" asked Jaina. While Marian seemed entranced by Jun's new Poke-friend, Koia, holding her in her arms and playing with her. "Hmm... or maybe it is... your girlfriend?" Jaina would normally tell her off for being so sudden... and indiscrete! But alas, Koia was a sight to behold. And so, Jun ended up flustered and with a slight blush. "Ehm, uh, n-no, this is Olivia! We met at the café"—the café being Jun and her moms', of course—"and we decided to try and travel together, s-so there's that!" "Oh, and Olivia, these are Marian and Jaina, they run the shop and they're my aunts hah", she scratched her head, still a bit flustered.

Olivia didn't have much time at all to take in the quaint and cozy interior decorations of the restaurant before she was immediately pulled into a dialogue with Jun and her aunts. The word 'girlfriend' immediately caught her attention, for that was something she hadn't really actively considered (thanks to the excitement of their adventures already) but could absolutely see why people would assume that. "It's real nice to meet you two! Yeah, Jun and I have just been having fun going from place to place. Guess we haven't been to -too- many places together yet, though." She said with a laugh and a grin as she looked over at Jun.

In the meantime, Olivia's companions who weren't currently passed out in her arms had since wandered off to go interact with the other Pokemon in the restaurant too. Through a bit of energetic persuasion, Garland had even managed to get Raijin and Shui to come with them. The boisterous Gible was currently squaring up a Snubbull who he had an interest in play-fighting, whereas the more docile Agatha had encountered a Slowpoke who she was gently bumping heads with.
