Can I get a ruling on how this works?

LIGHTNING DRAW STANCE
Cost: 2m; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 2;
Type: Refl exive (Step 1)
Keywords: Combo-OK, Obvious
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Kiss of the Sun Concentration
With this Charm, the martial artist need not have her weapon in hand before Join Battle is rolled to use it. Vibrant bands of crackling Essence coalesce about her forearms, and the Exalt readies her fi rewand and fi res it all in the same action (without suffering the -1 DV penalty normally associated with readying a weapon). Aside from the surprise factor this Charm allows, it also enables the character to attack more quickly, adding one extra automatic success to her Join Battle roll per dot of Essence she has. On successive actions, however, the character must take an action to reload a single-shot fi rewand after every shot. If the character wants to draw a fi redust weapon after combat has begun, the Charm enables her to draw and fi re in a single action, without the DV penalty for readying a weapon.

Is this saying that I get an attack when I use it before the start of join battle?

I am reading it that you don't get a free shot, but you do gain extra successes on your Join Battle roll equal to your permanent Essence in addition to whatever you roll on the dice. This gives you the chance to get the first shot off without any DV penalty to ready your weapon.

I recall that Zakas said that he could only take one other person with him.

That is the limit of the artifact, unfortunately. Pretty costly ability too, but cool nonetheless.

Okay, so having again learned the rules for surprise in 2.5e, it looks like if I beat their (Wits + Awareness + 1 for being alert to danger - 2 for my being invisible) on a (Dex + Stealth + 2 sux for Unseen Wisp Method) roll, then their DVs drop to 0. Because of Unseen Wisp Method I can keep re-establishing surprise every round without cover - my cover is being outside fate. If the DB has a surprise negator it doesn't matter much - should I bother rolling for surprise?

I added the establishing surprise roll to my post just in case.

You know me, I love me some Exalted. I can carry on with this no problem.

Ok, everyone is in. I'm reviewing the IC thread now to refresh my memory of what has already happened, and can have an IC post up in a bit.

Can I infer then that Stern Whip of Industry can see Epiphany? She's Outside Fate and imperceptible to anyone who doesn't have a Whispers rating, so Epiphany is going to be paying very close attention to whether these strange people from outside Creation can perceive her. If they can't she's just going to follow along invisibly and look through their stuff.

Ah, I was misremembering how powerful the Charm was. It does make her hard to perceive, but not imperceptible. It's a -2 external penalty to oppose her stealth for anyone without a Whispers rating, and she's considered to be in cover suitable for stealth even if completely in the open. The Outside Fate bit only makes her invisible to Sidereal Astrology.

I was reading that myself. Do you wish to try and remain hidden from the outlanders? If so, you'll need a Dex + Stealth roll please.

Weird. It looks like I never finished my character. I have 6 dots of Hearthstones I never chose. At a quick glance these ones look useful:

I have 6 dots (3 dots of Manse and 3 of Liege) to spend. The Orb of the Unnoticed Predator is nice, but the super-terror stone + super-shadow stone are probably better.

GEMSTONE OF SHADOWS (MANSE •)
This faceted rod is made of silvery crystal. It allows the bearer to summon deep shadows around himself. At the bearer’s command, these shadows can have a diameter of up to two yards, but can also be made smaller. Only magical light can pierce these shadows, but they are not completely opaque. The bearer can see out of them and anyone looking in can see vague shapes. This shadow increases the difficult to spot or recognize anyone inside by 2, higher if the surroundings are also relatively dark. In any well-lit area, however, the shadow itself becomes exceedingly obvious. Regardless of location, this shadow also increases the bearer’s Dodge and Parry DVs against all ranged attacks by 1. Anyone else who enters the shadow-zone does not gain this advantage against the bearer, though: the hearthstone’s owner can see perfectly well in the zone of darkness (though the hearthstone grants no benefit in seeing through darkness beyond that area).

ORB OF THE UNNOTICED PREDATOR (MANSE •••)
This flattened sphere is patterned like the skin of a leopard. The stone prevents its bearer from leaving tracks, even in thick mud or fine dust, and eliminates all traces of her scent and the scent of anything she wears or carries. These benefits also extend to any animal she rides and to anyone she carries, but do not extend to any companions moving on their own. If the bearer moves in a slow and stealthy fashion, the stone also mutes any noises she makes and bends shadows to her advantage, increasing the difficulty of all Awareness rolls to notice her presence by 1.

GEMSTONE OF ENTRANCE (MANSE •••)
The owner of this faceted, shimmering blue hexagon can unlock all locked doors and windows at a touch. However, this stone only opens locks on points of entrance and egress and has no effect on locked strongboxes or shackles.

PRISM OF FOCUSED PASSION (MANSE ••)
This prism-shaped carnelian allows the bearer to inflame passions in others. The bearer can amplify any emotion, turning vague resentment into raging jealousy, slight nervousness into unbridled terror or mild attraction into panting lust. The bearer of a prism of focused passion gains three additional dice on all Presence or Performance rolls designed to inflame emotions. Also, for purposes of resisting these inflamed passions a target’s Temperance is treated as if it were two points less than it is (to a minimum of 1). The latter effect works only on a single target at a time.

It's tricky to decide! From a metagame perspective Autochthonian security systems are going to be really tricky. I don't think Abyssals have easy Charm access to 'no sound + no scent + no tracks' like the Orb of Unnoticed Predator. Ah, but Zakas has Chains Cannot Hold so I don't need to bother with the Gemstone of Entrance. Okay, I'll take the other three.

Been suffering from a migraine for the past few days. I hope to be able to get my head into the game once more in the next day or two. Please be patient.

Ouch, that's no fun. Hope things clear up soon man.

As far as this game goes, I don't think things are waiting on me, but if I'm wrong please let me know. I'll see what I can do to push things along.
