Above The Law

Sleepy Tom

Wannabe Hipster
Officer Clifford Rayne sat in the front seat of his police cruiser, parked in the alley between a liquor store and an out-of-business movie rental shop. He squinted his crystal blue eyes, staring out the front windshield. The sun was shining violently through the glass and causing his face to drip with perspiration. He checked the built-in thermometer in his car. 87 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wiping the sweat from his forehead, he continued looking out for any suspicious behavior. Almost ready to give up and take a nap, Officer Rayne witnessed a car speed by. The driver had to be going at least ten above the speed limit, and their car was drifting onto the other side of the road. Probably drunk, he thought. Although, he didn't understand how anyone could drink at 9:00 in the morning.

Turning his sirens on, he pulled his car out from the alley and began to pursue the vehicle. Sighing, he waited for the driver to pull over to the side of the road. What a great day this would be.

Rowan was never late. It was a point of pride with her. She was always up before the sun was out, and she went through her normal routine of a morning run, followed my a nice long shower and then breakfast before she headed out to work.

Unfortunately, the previous night had consisted of some unwanted trouble when she was walking to her car from work, and since she was witness to it, she had been brought to the station -- God only knew how long she had to sit there and repeat the same thing over and over till they finally let her go.

She got home late, very late. And as a result, woke up late. And she couldn't be late to work. It wasn't that she had a corporate job, but she was a photographer, and she was needed on the scene, no matter how late the people being photographed were. She just hoped they were extra late as she sped down the road. It wasn't soon that she heard the sirens and let out a groan of dissatisfaction.

She looked to the left and pulled over to the side of the road.

You can do this Rowe, she thought to herself as she checked the rearview mirror for the police officer, you've gotten out of a ticket before.

Officer Rayne followed the car for a few feet before the driver pulled over to the side of the road, and he followed. Putting his cruiser in park, he grabbed his notepad and exited his vehicle.

Sauntering up to the car before him, he noticed that the driver was a young woman. Her window was already rolled down, and he gave her his "I'm sorry I have to do this" look.

Popping a hip and looking down at the girl, he prepared his notepad. "Ma'am, do you know why I pulled you over?"

Rowan rolled her window down and gazed up at the officer, trying to look past the fact that he was extremely attractive. She hardly felt bad for being pulled over.

"Um..." Try the dumb girl idea, she thought to herself and mentally shook her head. No, he would know better. Then she got another idea which just may work if she played her cards right...

"I'm guessing because you found me irresistible?" She supplied with a small chuckle, followed by a charming smile. "I'm just kidding officer, although that would be a very flattering reason."

The young woman looked up at him, most likely thinking of some way to get out of her ticket. Not today, missy. However, Officer Rayne was taken aback at her response.

He knew he was attractive, and women usually found that slightly intimidating. However, this girl went straight for the kill. Recovering from his shock, Officer Rayne chuckled a bit.

"Uh, that's not the reason," he said, giving her a small smile. "You were driving a little recklessly, speeding too."

"Well, you see, I was hoping to get your attention," she said, effortlessly covering that up.

"I had to do what I could. After all, it's not every day I get to meet a handsome cop," she explained, resting her elbow on the window sill and peering up at him, her bright eyes studying him for his mood and reaction.

So far so good, but she still saw it going many different ways, and she was or course, leaning towards the most positive results. Besides, charming a hot cop was more than just for getting out of a speeding ticket.

"So, you'll have to forgive my rash driving." She added with a sweet smile.

Officer Rayne smirked, shaking his head. This girl was something else. At least she was cute, not some old woman trying to lure him to his metaphorical death. No, this girl was actually very attractive. Officer Rayne would almost admit that her flirting was somewhat working. Still, he had a job to do.

"May I see your license and registration?" he asked, holding out a hand.

She nodded, still trying to figure out how to work her way around this. She reached into the glove compartment and pulled out her license and registration as he had asked and handed it over to him.

"If you want my number though, you could just ask." She added with a charming smile, still keeping it up.

He took the papers from the girl's hand. Rowan. Interesting name. Shaking the papers in his hand, he gave her a smug smile. "I'll be right back."

Walking back to his cruiser, many thoughts crossed his mind. Was this girl really interested or was she just trying to get out of a ticket? He'd had both happen to him before, countless times. None of the ticket-receivers were ever this attractive and classy, though. Running a hand over his stubble, he opened his car door and sat down. He ran her name through the records. Nothing. She was clean as a whistle. He could give her a warning. But then, he smiled to himself. He had a great idea.

He returned to Rowan's car and placed a hand on the top of her vehicle. Leaning in, gave her a fake "I'm sorry" look. "You're clean," he said. "Or at least, you were. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to give you a ticket."

He took his pen out of his pocket and began writing on his small notepad, sometimes glancing up at the girl.

((Sorry I took ao long!))

Rowan looked in the side mirror as he walked back yo his car and couldn't help but smile, thinking she'd gotten to him.

Of course that smile faded when he returned and spoke the words she hoped she wouldn't have to hear and she let a groan escape her lips as she watched him write something down on his notepad.

"Really?" She whined a little. "I mean even after I drove all this way just to get your attention?" She asked, still keeping up the act. Hey, it wasn't too late. She was still going to try.
