A Sudden Turn of Events

Mylah

Queen of Delicacies
1v1 with @BrokenArrow and @Mylah.

Two best friends (MxF) go on a beach trip over spring break. They bring all of their supplies in one car, and haul ass to through the mountains on their way to sunny California. Things get a little tricky when the terrain isn't as agreeing as they had expected. An mudslide occurs as a storm comes, just as they reach the Rockies. Their campsite is thrown into the middle of the woods. With no cell service and little supplies, how will they get back to civilization? What will happen?

Delaney usually woke up to the sound of her roommate's music. Though, as spring break had just begun, the mind-splitting heavy metal music was replaced by a deafening silence. Delaney was aroused this time by the grumbling of her own stomach. Her brown eyes opened, suddenly searching the room to identify her surroundings. Delaney had been living in her college dorm for a semester and still wasn't used to the cream-white walls and sterile smell. With a sigh, she pulled herself upright. Morning sunlight filtered in through the paper shutters of the room, and her clock read 11:42 a.m. She slowly began to smile, a sensation of freedom filling her senses like warm honey was running through her veins. That soon came to a stop when she realized she had actual plans.

"Ryan, oh my god, please pick up," Delaney gushed as she left a message for her best friend on the phone. "I totally blanked and slept in late. Can you call me as soon as you can? I forgot to send you the packing list and the map and the link to the website and-" She was cut off by a mechanical beep, signaling that her time was up. With a groan, she ran down the dorm stairs to the plaza, still wearing her pajama pants.

It was 10:52 am when Ryan woke up. Everything was quiet in his small apartment and he took a second to enjoy the silence. After checking out the clock he slowly rose up and stretched. He walked to his bedroom's window and opened it, letting in fresh air. At first, living alone in an apartment was very appealing but lately he was more and more realizing that it's also much more tiresome. He had to make everything and clean up everything on his own. He was thankful that Delaney helps him from time to time.

He took a quick shower and headed to the kitchen and made himself some pan cakes. His favorite breakfast. Something was nagging at the back of his mind the whole time as he ate and watched TV but it was 12:05 when he finally figured out what it was. With his eyes wide he ran into his bedroom, snatching his phone which was on silent. There was a message from Delaney, he listened to it as he quickly put on some fresh clothes. "That's right! Today we're supposed to... Damn it!" He mumbled. As he finished he called her again as he grabbed his car keys and headed for the door, hoping she would pick up.

Delaney was practically pacing up and down the stairs to Liberty Dorm Hall, anxiously waiting for Ryan to call her back. She had a car of her own, but let a friend borrow it assuming that they would return the vehicle in time for their trip. However, her so-called "friend" hadn't stopped by the parking garage, according to the last message she had received. Now, she was relying on her best friend for both a ride and supplies needed for the trip. As if God had heard her crying out on the plaza minutes ago, her phone suddenly began to ring rapidly. A picture of Ryan's face popped up on the lock screen.

"Oh, thank the Lord you're awake," She began, taking a big breath before everything spilled out. "Listen, I'm sorry I woke up really late, I was like completely wasted last night at the Spring Break party and could barely walk myself home, and I slept like 18 hours so I didn't know what was going on and now we're totally off schedule for our trip and according to my notes," Delaney continued to ramble, checking the list which she held in her hand. "We're supposed to be in Illinois right now. We live in New York, for God's sake! Oh jeez, Ryan, I'm so sorry,"

Ryan listened to the stream of sentences that was unleashed form Delaney. "Woah slow down Delaney, it's alright. It's my bad too, should've remembered. But don't worry we can still make it." He said as he was locking the door to his apartment. His apartment was in a quiet neighborhood, though close enough to his collage and pretty much everything else. He was juggling two part time jobs in order to barely keep up with paying the rent but it was all worth it in his opinion. It even has a nice little garden. Though he knew nothing about gardening and planning he always had a plan to learn at some point.

He rushed into his car as he continued. "I'm on my way right now, I'll be there in a few minutes. If we drive hard we should still be able to cover up for lost time but be ready when I get there." He started the car and started driving. "And what is that about you getting wasted. and right before a day like this, you never learn do you?" He said as he laughed. "Classic Delaney, that's why you're my best friend."

"Oh, lordy. Okay," Delaney took a deep gulp of breath, starting to power walk in the direction of Ryan's apartment to make things a tad bit quicker. "Thing is, while being 100% inebriated at a party last night, I also forgot to go to 7/11 and pick up literally everything we needed. So yeah, we're dead," She stated, quickening her pace. "And when you get here, do not ask about my choice of outfit," Delaney said in advance. She wasn't in the mood to take any crap towards her sheep-printed pajama pants and Starbucks tee. Life as a college student didn't give much room for shopping sprees.

Within seconds, she could see the headlights of her best friend's car making its way down the quiet street. Everybody had left town already. Delaney hung up her cell phone and sprinted towards the car in the middle of the street, and knocked on the passenger's window while it was still in motion. "Hey, open up, weirdo."

She hung up as she approached his car. He couldn't help but notice her outfit as she reached the door, and he understood why he would make fun of her. Of course he would never forgive himself if he didn't. He laughed as she called him a weirdo. "A sheep/human hybrid is calling me a weirdo?" He then opened the door. "I usually don't allow animals to enter my car but I'll make an exception this time." He said as he started driving when she entered and closed the door.

"Delaney do me a favor and relax for a second so you can focus on what we need to do. I guess our first stop is 7/11?" He asked in a more serious tone.

Laney climbed into Ryan's car, feeling cramped next to his size. "I told you not to comment on my outfit, doofus," She said with a nervous chuckle. Delaney gave a small nudge into her best friend's shoulder, an attempt to break the awkwardness radiating off of her. With a sigh, Laney tucked her almond brown hair behind unpierced ears, and opened her mouth to explain further. She was stopped, though, by Ryan's serious request for her to show a plan.

"Right. We need," Laney began, looking down at the receipt she had been scribbling on during her walk towards Ryan's vehicle. "Almonds? Chips. Jerky. Hot dogs. Bug spray. Sunscreen. Couple of beers for the camping only," Delaney said, making a point for him to take care of that purchase on his own. Delaney couldn't pass as 16, let alone 21. "Waters, map, pens, and a first aid kit WITH cotton balls." She finished, remembering the last time she and Ryan went camping. She had run out of mosquito spray, and didn't have any cotton balls to dunk tea tree oil in, which she did have.

Ryan was driving faster than he normally would as they were pressed on time. Though he was a good driver and always confident of his skills. Plus, it's always fun to cross the speed limit right? As she nudged his shoulder he nudged her back. She started listing all the items that they need to buy and he was overwhelmed. "Wow, that is a lot of stuff. Almonds is a definite YES. And yes please remember the cotton balls this time. Damn mosquitoes wouldn't leave us alone the last time we went camping. Actually a lot of things went wrong last time we went camping." He said with a laugh.

He kept driving on a fast pace and trying to avoid traffic by taking shortcuts as often as possible.A few minutes later they arrived at 7/11. He parked the car and looked at her. "Ok we're here. My main focus shall be to remember to buy the beer." He then smiled at her suddenly. "By the way, for a girl who got wasted and slept for 18 hours, you're looking pretty good." Complimenting her usually lifted her spirit, and always meant them.

Delaney nearly choked on her own breath. "Now I know that was an attempt to ease my nerves, but look at me. I'm wearing sheep pants and flip flops." The girl exited the car, a fifty dollar bill held in her fingers that she found in her bra. Probably a souvenir from the last night. "Beer!" Delaney shouted in Ryan's direction before entering the store.

As anticipated, only one person was staffing the convenience store. A popular tune played in the background as Delaney flipped through postcards of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island while she waited for Ryan. The girl soon made her way to the food, stacking snacks into her hand. She made sure to get cotton balls and bandaids, as well as water. Nothing forgotten. Unless she forgot something this morning. Afraid to start another stressful moment, she headed to the counter and checked out the items. It came to a whopping $37.81, over half of the cash she had on her. The problem of gas money floated into her mind as she obsessed over the receipt. Soon, though, that passed and she found her way to Ryan. Without thinking, she put the plastic bags down and wrapped her little arms around him. "Sorry for freaking you out," she muttered into his shoulder.

"Hey when someone throws a compliment at you just shut up and take it, don't complain about it." He said with a smile as he winked at her. He watched her as she walked to the store while he dazed away. Then she suddenly turned around and reminded him of the beer. "Right! totally didn't forget!" He said back to her. "I totally did forget." He mumbled to himself as he headed for the liquor store. As he entered he remembered that he didn't ask her if she had enough money. And if she finds out that she doesn't while in the store it'll be another stress attack.

The store was run by an old man, probably in his seventies. He grabbed the beer and waited at the cash register as the old man, who was at the other end of the store, slowly, painfully, made his way to the register. 'You've got to be kidding me!' Ryan thought. Eventually the old man made it and he paid for the beer and left. He was about to head to the store Laney was in when she emerged. He smiled when she apologized to him. "Don't worry about it, I think I'm immune to your freak outs by now." He then wrapped his hand around her should. "I'm sorry that I didn't ask if you had enough money but apparently you did! Did you get a new part time job behind my back? Because that would be high treason."

"No, nobody is willing to hire a stone cold statue. Not even McDonald's." Delaney joked, unwrapping herself from Ryan's torso. She picked up the bags once more and slung them over her shoulder. "Found 50 dollars in the good old over the shoulder boulder holder here." Laney laughed as she put the bags on the roof of his car. "Perks of being young and pretty and a very heavy drinker when it comes to college parties dominated by men," She said with no remorse in her voice. It was spring break after all. Delaney usually wasn't the one for mixers, preferring the quiet of her own bed instead of rave music and god knows what being passed around. Maybe that was part of growing up on a farm, or it was just Delaney.

"Get the beer?" Delaney asked him, tapping a rythm out on the metal of his car.

He laughed at her first joke. "Not even McDonald's? What's that supposed to mean, I'll have you know it's a very dignifying job." He then raised his eyebrow as she revealed the source of her money. "Really? you found 50 bucks in your bra? Are you kidding me? It takes me 6 days of work to make 50 bucks!" He shook his head as he smiled. "Perks of being young and pretty huh? Well I'm young and pretty too you know. And from now on, I'm wearing a bra and going to parties and getting wasted. I don't even care."

He then opened the car and took the items from the roof of the car and put them in the back seat. "Yes I got the beer, princess. It was a very painful experience." He then looked at her. "So what was special about this party? I come to you and weep and beg for you to come with me to a party and you rarely ever agree." He then got in the driver seat. "So where to next?"

Delaney smiled wide when she received the confirmation that beer had been bought. The smile disappeared when the topic of the party she attended last night. "We don't need anything else, nothing that my super-brain can remember," she attempted to change the subject, hoping that a change of scenery would relieve the tension building up in the car. Finally, feeling guilty, Delaney finally elaborated on the experience. "There just was a really nice selection of music, I guess. Next door, too, so I could easily hear it. You know I'm never going to give up a chance to hear some Beyonce," She chuckled weakly.

"What about you, sir? What's your excuse for forgetting about this endeavor?"

He listened to her as he drove. "Good music huh? That's a good enough reason I guess. So basically all I need to do to get you to a party is some Queen Bee music." He said jokingly. He then continued. "Come on Laney, don't give me that guilty face I'm just messing with you." She then asked him her question and he took a breath. "Why did I forget this endeavor... Lets just say it's none of your business, what happened last night is my little secret." He teased her. "Oh and this time I actually remembered to bring my guitar!" He said proudly.

"Oh no, sir, you're telling me about what happened last night. You made me admit that I'm a slave for Bey." Delaney replied, looking him directly in the eye, before breaking into a fit of laughter. "You know I can never be straight with you!" She said between giggles. "Good thing you brought your guitar, there's an ache in my bones that screams "COUNTRY MUSIC"!" She said sarcastically. "Don't play country though. I hate it." She began to ramble again, but popped her knuckles so she wouldn't start picking at her hands.

"I can take shifts with the driving if you want," Delaney said, finally regaining her seriousness. In all honesty, Laney wasn't the best driver, though. She's notorious for hitting small trees, among other things.

He smiled at her attempt to be serious. "I didn't make you admit anything, it was your guilty conscience." He then raised his eyebrow. "Oh come on, country music isn't THAT bad. But don't worry, I'm not going to be playing any country." She then offered to take driving. "Alrighty, when I feel I'm mentally prepared to crash into a street light, I'll give you the wheels." He then shook his head. "I'm joking! When I feel tired we'll switch."

He was silent for a minute the sighed. "Well, my guilty conscience is kicking in... I worked the late night shift yesterday. One of the girls who work at McDonald's asked me to fill in for her. I figured we could use the extra money for the trip. If I had known your bra had that covered I wouldn't have bothered." He then glanced at her. "And yes you'll never hear the end of it. But when i woke up in the morning I totally forgot." His smile widened. "Besides, the girl I filled in for is pretty and I figured having a beautiful girl owe you is never bad." He said playfully.

"My bra only produced fifty dollars, FYI. You do know that gas costs money, right?" Delaney said staring straight ahead. "Don't sweat it. I have $1,000 dollars in my underwear." She quipped sarcastically. "However, if you let me drive, I will lessen the costs of the trip by making us roadkill halfway in. Good solution, Delaney," the girl stated, mimicking her friend's deep voice.

"Oh come on Laney, don't get angry with me. I'm just kidding." She then mocked his voice and he smiled. "Oh my god, I totally don't sound like that... Wait do I really sound like that?" He then reached out for his wallet which keeping his eye on the road. "I do know that we need gas money." He took out 60$ from the wallet. "See I got us covered." He said as he handed the money to her.
