A Slashing Sword

"See ya!" Nick shouted, trying to laugh but failed as he bit into the food with a relief surge. The food was amazing and he knew she wouldn't survive the needs of survival nor would she succeed in battle against bandits.

Abby ignored Nick as she walked out of the encampment and into the woods, her sword drawn. It was getting dark and the worst time to venture out into the woods alone, but there was no way Abby was about to go down without a fight. As she came into a clearing, a sense of dread washed over her. She wasn't alone and sure enough the moment she gripped the handle of her sword, three men emerged from the woods with wicked smiles.

"Look here," the leader smirked, "Look what we have here."

"Such a pretty face should not be wandering around the woods alone so late at night," the one to his right cooed.

Abby held her sword in front of her, ready before the men lunged forward and attacked. She was quick on her feet and capable of holding off two of them but it was hard in the darkness to keep view of her blind spot. Suddenly, she felt the hilt of a sword jammed down into her shoulder and she stumbled but she managed to roll out of the way of his blade.

This was going to be difficult.

Nick sat there smiling and heard a yelp from a distance, him grabbing his sword and running over swiftly to the bandits, holding his sword prepared. "Let her go or I should hurt you...?" Nick laughed walking over to one and stabbing him in the stomach, throwing his body onto another bandit, knocking him down.

Abby heard Nick come running up and before she could even move he had his sword through one man and took out another with his limp body. Quickly, Abby scrambled to her feet and spun around to slice through the third bandit and watched him fall to the ground with a sickening thud. When they were all down, Abby reached back and felt her shoulder, a small amount of blood seeping through her shirt but not enough to be truly concerned. All she'd have to do was bandage it and it would be good as new.

"I'm no damsel in distress," she snapped, "but thank you, I appreciate the help."

"No worries; but if I hadn't saved you, they would've stripped you and possibly raped you." Nick stated, tossing some leaves to her. "Treat your wound with that for now." He walked back to his encampment and laughed.

"I bet you've got a lot of friends at home," Abby scoffed, "You're a real riot, y'know?"

She walked over to a rock outside of the encampment and slide her shirt slightly off of her shoulder. The blood was more than she expected but it wasn't enough to worry about, so she began to patch up her wound. The sky was beautiful, though, she realized as she looked up. She had to find a way out of here, no matter what. Her brother needed her and she wasn't about to give up on him. Abby never gave up on people who needed her.

"I have 0." Nick sighed, "What more than an outcast." He tried to laugh but a frown descended upon his face, "Think of an world where all hold hands; outcasts not outcasts, rivals not rivals; everyone just friends in an eternal harmony, living together in peace; all that all wishes for." He smiled soon after.

(I actually created that quote.)

"Yeah, well, people let you down sometimes," Abby replied to him, "I think that it's a lofty ideal, sure, to want eternal harmony and peace but people are complex. Therefore, the world is complex and I'm not sure that we will ever truly be able to live like that."

"I know I'd get bored," she finished tended to her wound, "Not sure I have very many real 'friends' but I've got a little brother who is the coolest kid you'll ever meet. I guess you just have to have faith you're going to find people worth the complexity."

"I'm working on a plan," she smirked, "I mean, it's like 1/9th of a plan right now but I'm working on it."

"And he's just one of those wide-eyed kids, y'know?" she asked, pushing her hair back, "Always believes the best in people, looks at you like a superhero just because. That kid lived through more heartbreak and suffering than a man three times his age. It's just..." she sighed, "he's all I've got."

"Oh." Nick sighed, "I've got no one. No one that cares, no friends.. I have to work for myself through GAMES." He sighed, now kind of mad. "I've lived through many heart breaks. Mother dying of cancer, father dying in the war....brother dying of Diabetes, sister of suicide. But what do I have now? Games."

Abby wanted to apologize, but she knew that apologies never meant much in those situations. When you bare your soul to someone, the only way to help is to bare a little something of your own.

"Mom and Dad divorced when I was eight, Matt was just two at the time so he doesn't remember much of it but -- it was bad," she explained, her hands fumbled in her lap, "Went to live with mom, but she died in a car accident when I was thirteen. Ever since it's just been us. I've got an uncle who swings by once in a while to check up -- my dad's brother -- and I'm hoping he gets there soon to take care of Matt."

Abby shrugged, "Life sucks, sometimes."

"It does." Nick sighed, "Sorry for your situation. We're probably already in the hospital." Nick tried to laugh but didn't.

"It's okay," Abby pushed herself standing and took a few steps away from him with her head up turned to the sky, "I'm gonna find a way to get us out of here. I'm not sure how yet, but I will."

"Try and do it." Nick smiled as he laid down on his bed, drifting to sleep. He had a dream about death and it's horrible features; but also the good.

As Nick fell asleep, Abby picked up her bow and walked back out to her post on the outer edge of the encampment. Being stuck with him was better than being alone, and though she keep trying to come up with a plan nothing was quite working. How do you get out of a game you can't control?

Nick continued his dark slumber as his body started to shake virtually and physically. It shook more and more until he woke up in the game. What had just happened! Nick thought as he stood up.

Something strange was happening, that's all Abby knew about their situation. This can't be good, she thought. Abby turned quickly to see Nick shaken out of bed, "What's up? What's wrong?"

Abby was unnerved by his response, "Maybe we should head out and find someone who can give us answers or at least a lead. We can't just stand here."

"Answers! This is a medieval fucking world! No one can answer us. All players are stuck here and Admins along with mods stripped from their privileges because of that retarded owner!" Nick suddenly responded harshly, collapsing to the cold ground.

"Wow, okay, Mr. Sunshine," Abby shot back at him, "Listen, I get that you're stressed out, okay? But we've got to try something. Sitting here and doing nothing is the same as giving up and I am not about to give up. So you can either come with me or you can sulk here in the dark and wait for someone to save you."
