Fantasy A psychological horror modern magic roleplay?

I haven't had this whole idea tied in yet as I wanted to seek feedback and perhaps some constructive criticisms for this!


This roleplay would consist with two realms set in modern time 2016, the first being Earth and the later being the unconscious realm in our minds. (I actually had an earlier thread but it was quite unclear so I decided to redo a new one.) Your character has the capacity to enter two realms like the rest of the human population. This state of mind would be called the subconscious. So what happened was that the conscious state of mind, or reality had overbearing effects on the human population, which stressed the unconscious state of mind into forming an alternate realm.


From then on whenever people go to sleep, they enter the unconscious realm and they face horrors like their deepest fears and desires morphed into demons, things that are unpleasant and unacceptable to moral standards. From there, people who survive gets to collect spoils of war if they do beat their inner demons and this is how they gain magical powers. Those who do not survive die in their sleep.


The unconscious realm has universally waged a war against the humans and soon they will appear physically in the real world through the dead bodies or through willing people who joined the side of the unconscious realm.


So pretty much this is a save the world-esque kind of roleplay or you can join the unconscious side but I have not fully developed this idea. I have a few exams coming up in a few months time so I would appreciate some help if this roleplay is to be established, thanks c:

Yup and the "nightmare" realm has proclaimed war on the real world and decided to go all zombie-ish apocalypse on them. What's your opinion on this? @Thane Korino

It feels like a fairly simple idea in concept and perhaps in execution as well. Honestly, it seems like some of it can be cleared off and dusted off for a better presentation and explanation. For example if every human enters the nightmare realm no need to mention that the characters are capable of doing so unless, well unless you can play something beyond human. Instead of saying realm of the unconscious you could give it another name that may sound better but that is just nitpicking.


It is probably worth mentioning how long these nightmare attacks have been around to give a frame of understanding. Also whether or not it is limited to a specific area which may be interested as it gives a starting setting for players, and it could be spreading, giving more a sense of urgency to stop and save the world rather than impending doom. (Since if it's everywhere already across the whole world it sounds a bit..or extremely daunting to stop you know? Although that again is a nitpick and it depends on what kind of atmosphere you're going for).


As for zombies, I do not feel that the normal definition of zombie (modern definition) would be exciting but I am unsure if that is what you mean. For example you can have undead monsters causing havoc or nightmare demons leaking in through into the natural realm with outstanding abilities to cause destruction or conquer it using the form of human bodies and followers to gain and use power. Hell, they could be trying to blend into society like in parasyte or in a lot of supernatural works, and then try to slowly corrupt or slowly destroy from within.


There is a lot of possible stretch room that can occur. You may want to explain a bit more what the nightmare realm is like and why it is specifically 'evil'? but that's probably just a pointless/idiotic nitpick. Are characters just straight up fighting their own personal demons and nightmares manifested or do these beings exist already on their own? That might be something interesting to connect. It would be kind of like silent hill versus bill cypher and Cthulhu esk things. In silent hill it's nightmares and personal demons manifested by the power of a cult and their demon from another realm although these nightmares do not specifically have to reflect the person who is seeing them but more of whom influence they are under. While in Cthulhu esk stuff they already have their own form, different planes, etc. and some are just beyond natural comprehension...

Oh! Magical powers, would probably need to go over that later on in the roleplay..and whether or not nightmare realms connect or are they seperate. Such as if one character is in a nightmare can someone else join in the nightmare? etc. etc. How does magic work and what other spoils are there? etc. etc. but those are mostly minor and can be filled in during the roleplay but are good to think about...
