Fantasy a love/hate relationship

Alexander turned his head to look at Rowan, having ignored him from the moment he walked into the room. He didn’t find any reason to interact with the man after all. He noticed the way in which the king’s expression immediately changed. He tilted his head slightly, thinking back on the way that Nikolai spoke earlier. It did cause him to feel the tinge of worry he had before returning. He did his best to shove it away though, especially since he still wasn’t the happiest with the siren prince currently. Yet the feeling only grew the longer that he thought about it.

“He was directly behind us.” The comment was simple, not finding the need to elaborate any more as he shifted to look back at the entrance that they walked in through. He almost expected for Nikolai to walk in not long after them. It wouldn’t have caused him any surprise. The other male seemed to be the type that might wander off or get lost. He let out a soft sigh, doing his best to not act as though he was a completely rude host. He had to keep reminding himself that Nikolai and him would soon be married. They would have to get along eventually, whether they liked it or not.

He cleared his throat and forced himself to stand straighter then. “I will go and see if he took a wrong turn. The palace is rather large and it is very easy to get lost. Please, do not wait for us to return to eat. Enjoy the food while it is still hot.” He stood then, offering everyone surrounding him a smile. It was exactly what his father would’ve offered to do. It was enough to make him want to laugh. The entirety of what he just said was far too diplomatic.

He was quick to move away from the table and back out where they came in. The sound of his steps echoed in the quiet halls. The only other sound was the sound of the storm raging outside. He muttered a few curses in his native language as he walked. The worry was a large pit in his stomach then, causing for him to feel as though he might be ill. He absolutely hated it. He didn’t believe there to be any reason as to why he should worry about Nikolai in the way that he was. It was the one thing that stayed directly in his mind the entire time that he searched for him.

It took him longer than he would’ve liked to find the siren prince. His first response was to scold him for wandering off, but that quickly changed when he saw the condition Nikolai was in. “You trüik.” He muttered, calling him an idiot in his own language. “You should’ve allowed me to help you earlier. Will you please just let me try to do something?” He asked in a quiet tone. He was very annoyed with Nikolai and it was showing. His worry was only resurfacing though, his blue eyes shining with it.

The storm raged on, but Nikolai could focus on nothing but the amount of effort it took him to breathe. Each breath sucked so much energy out of his body, he felt dizzy and disoriented. A feeble attempt at getting back up was made, but his legs were much too weak, wobbling under him like jello until he fell back down. He supposed this was the punishment for attempting to warn Alexander.

The prince hadn’t a single clue where he was. His surroundings all blurred together, and the sound of the raindrops hitting the windows grew louder by the second. It took Nikolai a good minute to realize it was not just the rain drops, it was footsteps. Someone was coming towards him. He shivered at the thought of it being his father coming to rub salt on the wound, but the voice that came with the steps was not Rowan’s.

Nikolai’s head lifted slowly, hand still clutched to his chest as if that would help him breathe better. Asking for help was the last thing he wanted to do. In fact, he wasn’t even sure Alexander could help. But the longer he remained silent, the dizzier he felt and the more clouded his judgment got.. His chest moved rapidly in an effort to grab all the oxygen he could. He was beginning to feel like a fish out of water. His free hand reached out, grabbing onto Alexander’s arm as if it were the only thing keeping him from collapsing.

“I- can’t-“ he inhaled sharply, lungs crying out for help. “I can’t breathe-“ His gaze lifted to the warlock prince, pain painting every feature on his face. He hoped the silent look was enough to let the man know Nikolai would accept any form of help he could offer right now. Talking felt like being stabbed in the chest. He squeezed the arm for emphasis. A wordless plea for the prince to stay with him.

Alexander’s expression tightened as he finally saw the full extent to Nikolai’s dismay. He didn’t think he had seen anyone act such as this before. The first and only thing that made sense in his mind was the idea that it could’ve been from the extended period of time away from the ocean. At least, that was until he realized Rowan and Seraphina had been away from the sea for just as long. He hadn’t a clue as to why Nikolai was so ill then and he hated not knowing. His eyes fell down to his chest, noticing the way he seemed to be struggling to get any sort of breath in.

He glanced to the hand that landed on his arm. “Alright. I know it might be hard, but please try to relax some. I should be able to help.” He assured in a soft voice. He wasn’t sure truly if he could. He hadn’t practiced healing magic since he was much younger. It was far too risky to attempt to go find a healer right now as well. This was on his shoulders and his only. He straightened his back then, kneeling down instead of just squatting. He took in a few deep breaths before he moved his hands to hover near Nikolai’s chest.

He closed his eyes for a few moments to ground himself. He focused solely on what he wanted to do. “Vafyê suø mehr.” Gods help me. The prayer was quiet and soft, but he hoped it would be enough to get what he needed. He opened his eyes then and began to mutter under his breath. He stopped doing so not long after he started. He moved his hands to rest gently on his chest, heat coming from them while he did. He focused on the heat as the feeling spread through his entire body.

The process was short, but long enough in his own eyes. He worked until the heat spread through Nikolai’s and his own body. After he felt that change, he muttered one more word and it changed to cold. He allowed for it to stay like that for a moment before readjusting them both to the room’s temperature. He could recall something about shocking the body helped with healing, but he wasn’t sure just exactly what it had been.

It was then that he finally pulled back and away from the other male, shoulders hunched some. Healing magic required for you to use quite a bit of energy. It was one of the reasons that he hated doing it. He felt as though his own head was pounding. A groan left him as he shifted to look at Nikolai fully. “Are you feeling any better?” He asked in a very quiet voice. “I did the best that I could to alleviate all of your symptoms. I do not know if it worked though. I normally don’t use healing magic.” He explained. He shifted to sit next to the siren prince, leaning against the wall while he did.

The change in temperature of his body made Nikolai groan in pain, the hand that had been grasping his chest now curled up into a fist on his lap, the one on Alexander’s arm following suit. He kept his eyes shut, willing his body to calm down. It was easier said than done. His muscles contracted each time he attempted to breathe in.

Truthfully, Nikolai still felt weak after Alexander was finished. He knew why, of course. Fighting magic with magic, like fighting fire with fire. In the end, the damage remained. He knew it didn’t speak to Alexander’s abilities. Had it been a normal illness, he more than likely would have been fully recovered by his aid. Yet here he sat, still dizzy and in pain, wondering how long this would last.

His breathing was the only thing that settled. In fact, he could almost breathe normally again. His muscles ached from the effort, but he allowed himself to relax against the wall behind him, eyes closing for a moment as his hands rested on his lap. “A little better...” He still had to pause to breathe, but talking didn’t feel as much of a task as before. Had it really been the magic that helped, or was it simply the prince’s presence.

Nikolai had grown used to getting through his struggles alone. He never realized how nice it felt to have someone actually want to help. For a brief moment, he questioned the prince’s motives, and then wondered if Alexander would be the kind to join him on an impromptu adventure. Both thoughts were pushed aside as his eyes fluttered open, shifting to look at the man next to him. “Thank you.” He paused, surveying their surroundings for a moment. “Did you come to look for me alone?”

The statement sounded more hopeful than he’d meant it. Nikolai’s biggest concern wasn’t whether the prince cared enough to do so -though he silently and begrudgingly wished he did- but more so whether Rowan had been trailing behind him. He chose to clarify. “I mean…is my father with you?”

The storm outside had begun to subdue to light sprinkles and short gusts of wind. Nikolai’s symptoms too, began to dwindle, leaving behind an overwhelming need to leave. If he wasn’t so afraid of the symptoms attacking again, he would jump out the nearest window. Perhaps, if he’d accept, maybe even invite Alexander along.

Alexander shifted how he was sitting in order to look at the siren prince next to him. He felt the familiar drum of a headache beginning to fill his temples. He only ever got headaches such as this after using intense magic like healing magic. Simple spells that he used daily didn’t cause him any issues. He rested his head against the wall as he gazed at him. The worry that he was feeling was still present. It wasn’t as strong as it had been before, but the unwelcome feeling was the only thing that he knew right now.

Relief coursed through him as he heard that Nikolai felt a little better. “I’m glad. I am terrible with healing magic. I honestly regret not learning more of it. I only took the basic lessons when I was younger. It just wasn’t something that I was interested in.” He confessed. He shifted once more to sit with his back leaning against the wall. He let out a soft grunt as he did so. There was some pain in his lower back, but he blamed that on forcing his posture to be perfect the entire day. He couldn’t wait until he was able to relax that evening in bed.

“You’re welcome. You might not be my favorite person, but I do not want you to die.” He commented. He was sure that he ruined the moment of calmness between them, but the words slipped from his lips before he could stop them. He raised a hand up to rub at his eyes, though he was quick to drop it when he heard his question. A small smile finally came to his face. He hadn’t realized that he had a lump in his throat the entire time he had been treating Nikolai. “I did come to look for you by myself. I figured it would be best if I were to do that.” He assured. He hoped that would bring him a sense of peace.

“Your father did seem rather upset about it though. He mentioned something about it being one of your familiar tactics to get away from something.” He informed. He bit his bottom lip gently before he decided it was best to continue with what he wanted to say. “Why does he act that way when it comes towards you? It seems like he hates you. I noticed it earlier by the fountain as well.” He couldn’t stop his questioning now. He wanted to know more. He doubted that it was even his business to do so, but he wanted some answers.

His expression held the curiosity and the worry that he had been hiding from before. The blue of his irises was nowhere near as bright as it had been before.

The trickling of raindrops against the windows served as a backdrop for the conversation. Nikolai kept his gaze forward, avoiding the prince’s direct gaze. Anytime their eyes met, Nikolai was hit with a wave of unfamiliar longing that he preferred to not acknowledge. The only thing he’d ever truly wanted in life was to be free without consequences, and for his people to be safe. Whatever pull Alexander had wouldn’t last long.

The thoughts were cemented with the prince’s comment. Not that Nikolai ever cared for what others thought about him, especially not someone he’d just met. At least that’s what he always claimed. The few kind gestures wouldn’t erase that. Still he huffed, bringing his legs up and wrapping both arms around them as if to ward off the incoming emotions.

“The only person that man loves is himself.” The phrase was laced with bitter resentment. Nikolai recalled when he was younger, he used to adore his father, but the siren king never felt that way about him. That much was clear when he was willing to sacrifice his son’s freedom and well being for his own interests. The burning in Nikolai’s chest spread to the back of his eyes as they glazed over, threatening to spill salty tears. The dim light of the halls reflected against them, and he quickly wiped at a single tear that managed to escape, gaze still fixated on the wall across from them.

He’d always hated how emotional he was, sometimes to the point of being irrational. That’s how he viewed caring for people that never gave a damn about him. Irrational and useless. Something he’d surely gotten from his mother. “This whole arrangement is a joke to him. Just a way to get rid of me…” he trailed off, not wanting a repeat of the episode he’d just gone through. He sighed, rubbing at his eyes before shifting to get up. He wondered then, what would be the nearest exit to the castle. His body craved the water, and if his mind recalled correctly, there was a moon pool nearby, hiding behind the large protective walls of the castle.

The thought of going back to his parents now made his skin burn, his emotions running rampid with no way of calming them down. His body ached, but the ocean water was always therapeutic for Nikolai, capable of washing away all of his worries, “I don’t suppose you’ll cover for me if I leave, will you?” It was more of a statement than a question. Of course the perfect warlock son wouldn’t cover for him. He’d probably never done a single thing that went against his parents’ wishes in his life.

Alexander brought a hand up to rub at his eyes for a few moments. He was beginning to feel exhausted. He assumed that the stress from the day along with the the spell took everything from him. His stomach was also beginning to let out a few growls, though he couldn’t find it in himself to want to join their parents for dinner that evening. He didn’t want to be social any longer. He had been stressed the entire day about fitting the standards that his rents had for him. He truthfully just wanted to curl up in a ball and go to sleep.

He paused his movement as he heard Nikolai’s bitter statement. He dropped his hand back to his lap before he turned to look at him fully. Shock filled him as he saw the tears that were filling his eyes in the dimly lit room. “I am sorry about that. I know that isn’t helpful for me to say, but I truly am. He just never seemed like the kindest person. I thought it was just a siren thing.” He admitted his ignorance in that moment, shrugging his shoulders. He knew the emotional anguish must be great from the way he was curling in on himself.

“Well, he did make it seem as though your sister would be the one to come marry me. He was a liar in that situation, which I know angered my father. I don’t think I would trust a word coming out of his mouth any longer.” He decided to allow his thoughts to spill easily from his lips. There wasn’t a reason to try to stop them. He had a bad habit of rambling when he was somewhat nervous.

“I might not be what you had in mind in this instance. Just know that I have no plans to treat you as though you were just someone who your father shoved onto me. No living being deserves to be treated like that.” He spoke truthfully. He doubted his words would do anything to relax the siren prince, but it was worth a try. No matter how much he disliked sirens, he would never treat them as though they were animals. He could only hope that the same would apply to Nikolai in his case. His eyes watched as the other male slowly got to his feet. It wasn’t long before he made the effort to join him in standing.

“I honestly do not think I will even be going back to the dinner. I do not want to sit there and listen to our parents talk the entire night. If anyone does ask, I will just say that you went for a nap because of your illness.” He informed. The excuse would work well enough in his mind. He shifted to look out one of the windows, noticing the rain had stopped. The sky was still rather cloudy and darkening, though this time it was due to the sun beginning to set. “I think I am going to go out into the garden for a bit to get some air. If you do not mind my asking, where are you thinking of going?” He tilted his head as his curiosity got the best of him.

The urge to leave the castle only burned brighter within Nikolai the longer he stood in it. Alexander’s response was surprising. He didn’t think it likely that the perfect prince would not only cover for him, but also want to leave himself. Of course, he wasn’t actually leaving, but staying within the confines of the garden. He thought back to what Eloise said about her son in regards to the garden and wondered if it was stress that would lead him there.

Nikolai stood silent for a moment, the warlock’s words still fresh in his mind. It really didn’t matter how Alexander treated him. The fact that they were engaged was already playing into Rowan’s plans. Whether the two princes got along or not didn’t matter nor would it change the outcome. The thin blanket of comfort that the words offered should not be there. Yet it was, and Nikolai’s stubborn front crumbled just the slightest bit.

“Cei’levõunt-“ the phrase was muttered, almost quiet enough for it to be drowned out by the winds outside the windows as Nikolai’s index fingers massaged his temples. It was one Nikolai used often, when his feelings were at odds with his common sense, as they were now. Alexander asked where he was going, but Nikolai wasn’t obligated to share. What’s more, the siren prince had already thought of inviting him along. He didn’t think the warlock would appreciate the beauty of the water as much as it deserved, and still he pondered the idea.

“How long has it been since you’ve left this castle, prėinci?” The question, rather than a search for information, sounded more like an invitation. Nikolai spent very little time in the castle. As little as possible in fact. He took to the ocean grounds or to explore the land as much as he could. He was willing to even bet he knew more of the land’s layout than Alexander himself. He turned to the prince now, the look of mischief settled on his face once again, completely replacing the angry tears that had been threatening to spill.

“I won’t tell you where I’m going…” he paused to look around as a force of habit before continuing. “But if you want to join me I can show you.” Even without the prince‘s guide, Nikolai was sure to find his way out of the castle unoticed, but if he joined they could get out much faster. Dark eyes gleamed in the dim light as he waited for answer, their natural gold flickering in specks for a moment, as if daring the prince to take the risk.

Alexander raised an eyebrow as he heard the word the other male spoke. He knew nothing of the siren’s native language. It wasn’t something that normally was taught due to the war that was raging on between the two peoples. He had to admit he liked the sound of the words though. They seemed to slip from Nikolai’s mouth like smooth silk or butter. It was a stark contrast to how the warlock’s language sounded. He understood why Nikolai had the slight accent that he did now.

The question had him stumped for a few moments. He honestly could recall the last time he had been able to leave the castle grounds. His parents forced him these past few months to put all the effort in to become a perfect suitor for his engagement. He had been in and out of lessons every day with breaks only when he needed them. His cheeks and tips of his ears tinted a light shade of pink as he thought back on it. It was a bit embarrassing that he hadn’t actually don’t anything normal for quite a long time.

“I honestly cannot recall. My parents forced me to learn quite a bit these past few months so I never really had any time to. The closest I have gotten was sneaking out to the garden some nights.” He confessed. He knew now that his sneaking out truly wasn’t such. His mother must’ve known that he was escaping to the garden some nights to clear his mind. He almost hated that they had a constant knowledge about what he was doing. The thought was enough to make his stomach almost turn. He doubted he would ever truly have the freedom that he yearned for.

He blinked in surprise at the offer that Nikolai gave him. It was clear that he hadn’t expected for the other male to say such a thing, especially when he felt as though the two of them were nothing more than just acquaintances tolerating each other. “That would be quite nice.” He agreed, a small smile coming to his lips. In the faint light, small dimples could be seen as he did so. His eyes also lit up at the touch of a smile. He turned his head to glance around them. He hoped no one would follow after him, though he doubted they would.

“I know a quicker way to get outside. You can lead us from there.” He stated before he began to walk down the hallway, away from the direction he came in before. He made sure that his steps were slow enough for Nikolai to keep up with him. He then turned and opened a smaller door. It was clearly one of the servants hallways, but he knew it would be empty due to the dinner occurring at that moment. He led the way down it until they reached another door. The hallway had branched out a few directions though he made sure to continuously walk straight. He opened the door and then stepped outside. The air was thick with humidity from the rain, but the temperature had cooled down some.

Alexander’s aid was appreciated, and cut back the amount of time they’d be gone by a lot. Truthfully, Nikolai half expected the prince to back out the moment they moved away from the castle, but he trudged along behind him. The siren’s steps were slower than usual. His legs felt heavy, almost beginning to feel foreign. Of course they were his. Another reiteration of his tail. However, legs could only move so fast and get him so far.

His energy felt depleted, but Nikolai still carried on as if he were fine, only stopping to catch his breath a couple of times. They were able to leave the palace grounds undetected, and suddenly found themselves in the middle of an enchanted forest. Trees of all shapes and colors loomed overhead, creating a canopy of leaves above them, leaving very little openings for sun or moonlight. The time of day casted an orange glow over the kaleidoscope of plants and flowers. And the air felt humid. A hindrance for most, but Nikolai’s skin benefited from the moisture. His breath still felt staggered, but almost nearly back to normal.

Having been through these grounds so many times in order to get to and from the city, the beautiful foliage didn’t have as big of an effect on him as it did the first time he saw it. Nevertheless, it was still breathtaking. He walked at a slower pace, allowing time for Alexander to enjoy their surroundings if he wanted.

“Whatever you do. don’t touch those.” He warned, gesturing to a small bush of golden bell shaped flowers as they walked past them. Perhaps the most beautiful they’d come across. “They’re poisonous. Your people call them siren’s touch.” he couldn’t help but scoff at the name. It didn’t take a genius to figure out why the warlocks would name the most beautiful yet most dangerous flower after the sirens. They spoke so highly of themselves, as if the carnage the war brought was purely one sided. Nikolai had seen first hand how deceitful warlocks could be. No better than the siren king himself.

The flowers continued their blooms as they neared the destination. Nikolai took a moment to ensure Alexander was still behind him and in one piece before continuing. If anything happened to their precious prince, no doubt the warlocks would be quick to sentence Nikolai to death, no questions asked.

“They’re actually called clochés e’oure.” He added. Making it clear that the name Alexander’s people gave it was incorrect. “It means poisonous gold.” The irony of Nikolai teaching Alexander about a plant was almost comical considering what Eloise had said. They were one of the few plants that the warlock garden would most likely never possess. The vines stretched from the bushes along the ground, leading them down the narrow path towards what looked like a grand rock structure. Nikolai followed along the edge, careful to not touch any of the poisonous flowers on the way. They only walked for a couple of minutes, Nikolai making sure to instruct Alexander on where to place his feet to avoid tumbling over. After a few minor missteps, the cave entrance came into view.

The forest that surrounded them was one of the most beautiful things that Alexander had seen in his entire life. His eyes grew wide as he glanced around them, trying to take on everything all at once. He heard stories of the surrounding forests in Nëlos. It was something that he always yearned to explore, but wasn’t allowed to. He couldn’t believe he was finally given the chance to do so. His steps slowed then as he continued to look around. He recognized a few plants from his studies and from the gardens in the castle, but there were many that were still a mystery to him.

He paused as Nikolai warned against touching one of the flowers. He blinked, making the connection immediately. “Of course my people do,” He scoffed, shaking his head. He hated the way that his people acted as if they were so innocent in the war. “I have seen them in some books before. I just never knew that they grew here.” He spoke truthfully. The golden hue of the petals was rather enchanting. He could understand why some people might want to touch them. He almost had the urge to reach out himself and do so. He knew better than to do so, reminding himself that he would probably be one of the many that would be killed. After all, why would it save him? He didn’t believe he was special enough to be healed from it.

He turned his head to look at Nikolai as the young prince spoke of its true name. “I believe the true name is slightly different in my language, though I am not referring to siren’s touch. I just am unable to think of it currently,” He paused then, debating whether or not he should say what he was thinking. “Your language is quite beautiful. It is so light and airy. I always feel as though I am yelling when I speak in my native tongue.” He let out a soft chuckle. He felt rather odd being away from the castle. It was almost as if he was a small child wandering off on his own.

He offered Nikolai a smile once more before they continued to walk. He tried his best to make sure that his steps were careful. The wetness of the ground didn’t help him. His shoes caused for him to almost fall multiple times. He muttered a few curses as he did so. It didn’t help that he was still in his nicer clothing and shoes from that day. If he had been wearing something he normally would’ve, it might prevented his missteps.

He brushed his shirt some as they were finally at the mouth of the cave. He lifted his gaze to see the beautiful water. His eyes widened once more. “I didn’t even know that this was here. It is just as beautiful as the forest.” He spoke truthfully. It then clicked in his mind as to why they were here. Nikolai must want to return to his natural form. He was sure it was rather uncomfortable being stuck with legs for a while after being used to having a tail. He reached a hand up to wipe some of the sweat that was on his forehead. The humidity always got to him. He moved to take a seat on one of the rocks near the water, but not too close to it.

The compliment was unexpected. Céllis, the sirens’ only native tongue, had always sounded beautiful to Nikolai, but he assumed it was his biased opinion. He didn’t expect to hear someone else say it, much less a warlock. If he had to guess, Nikolai would say everything Alexander knew about sirens until today was based on rumors and exaggerated stories. Like any species, they too had their outliers, but the only siren Nikolai had ever met that truly fit the rumors to perfection was his own father. “Thank you.” He felt obligated to say it. Now that they were truly alone, Alexander had no reason to act a certain way. Nikolai wondered if what the prince was saying was a result of his “lessons” or if he finally spoke from his own thoughts.

Perhaps he hadn’t been the best of tour guides, but Nikolai did offer his hand to the prince more than once to help him stabilize. The last thing he wanted was to return a scraped up and bruised Alexander to his parents. They already didn’t care for him, not that it mattered, but he didn’t care to have any more confrontations tonight. It was already an exhausting day as is. That’s what brought him here. The water never judged nor attempted to control him. It offered him peace and freedom.

The walls of the cave encircled them inside as the two stepped further in. It felt more humid there than it did within the green walls of the forest. “I take it you don’t leave your castle often.” It was more of a statement than a question. Judging by how Alexander reacted to the forest that was only a few minutes’ walk from his home, he already had the answer. “Must get lonely in there.” Even with his low energy, Nikolai maneuvered through the rocks, highs and lows of the cave ground with ease. Having been through so many times, he could walk it with his eyes closed.

He paused at the edge of the small cliff, the ocean water only inches away from his feet. The sunset glow filtered through the moon shape opening of the cave overhead, casting a golden glow over the water and the siren prince himself. He took in the scenery for a moment, the sky still shrouded with a few clouds, but much calmer than it had been all day. It was only then that he realized Alexander was not beside him. He turned to find the prince sitting a few feet away on the rocks, brows lifting in curiosity.

“What? Don’t like the water?” Light streaks danced across the small pool, reflecting against the rocks underneath. It was fairly deep, but clear enough that one could see straight to the bottom. “Or are you worried about your suit?” The sly smirk appeared once again, though it was short lived as Nikolai decided to try the waters first. Maybe Alexander just needed a little incentive.

A soft breeze coursed through the cave as the siren prince began to undress. Normally, he wouldn’t go through the trouble. But if he had to lead Alexander back to the castle, it would best be done clothed, which would be the first thing to be ruined if kept on. His shoes were first, followed by his shirt and pants. The jewelled crown came off last, not wanting to risk losing in the water. When nothing but the singular pearl earring, pendant and undergarments were left, Nikolai finally got what he’d been craving for hours.

His body sank into the water with a loud splash, his skin instantly thankful. Thirsty pores absorbed the water like medicine, taking in all its healing properties and releasing all the pent up frustrations the prince had been battling for hours. His body began to adapt to its new environment, glistening scales and tail casting a glow, extending past the surface of the water, reaching up to the skies. Less than a minute later, Nikolai emerged from the stirred waters. He quickly swam back to the edge, chin resting on his crossed arms as he glanced over at Alexander.

His eyes were almost identical to the hue of the poisonous flowers, in perfect harmony with the golden scales of the tail moving lazily behind him. “It’s not dangerous if that’s what you’re thinking.“ Surely Alexander didn’t think Nikolai would be dumb enough to hurt him. What good would that do him? The warlock prince was just as much of a pawn in Rowan’s game as Nikolai himself.

The more time that Alexander spent away from the castle, the more that his actual personality came out. He didn’t have to worry about his parents seeing him for who he was out here. He was free, in a strange sense, in a way that he hadn’t been before. The burden of being perfect had vanished at the current moment in time. He almost felt like he was a child again, like he had returned back to before he learned everything he knew now. It was wonderful and gave him a strong sense of peace. Surprisingly, being around Nikolai only brought it out more. He guessed it was due to the fact that the siren prince didn’t particularly follow the rules like he did. He couldn’t understand exactly what he was feeling towards him currently, but he didn’t mind the change.

“You’re welcome. They never taught us anything about sirens that was of use when I was younger.” He commented with a slight shrug of his shoulders. Nikolai was probably already aware of that. The sirens were just viewed as monsters to his people. He lifted his arms to stretch then, his back cracking gently as he did so. His posture was slouching some as he grew more comfortable around the other male. The humidity in the air was getting to be a bit uncomfortable. He carefully removed his suit jacket after he took a seat down on the rock. He lifted his gaze to look at Nikolai as he made the statement.

“I am not allowed to. They watch me like hawks and there are enchantments that do not help. These last few months have been unbearable though. They kept me learning how to be the perfect husband and the perfect king for this marriage. I was only able to sneak out to the gardens some nights and that was it.” He admitted. He found it to be quite pathetic that he never truly experienced things that his own people did. How was he supposed to rule if he didn’t actually understand them? “It gets to be very lonely. I try not to think about it too much since there isn’t much I can do to change it.” He agreed.

Embarrassment was the first thing that hit him at the mention of not liking the water. He was sure that Nikolai would never let him live down what he was about to say. “I—“ He broke off as the other male began to undress. He blinked a few times before averting his gaze. He hadn’t ever been witness to someone undressing in front of him before, man or woman. He found the entirety of it to just be rather uncomfortable. He cleared his throat gently, glancing around at the caves walls while he waited for Nikolai to finish undressing.

He only looked back to him when he heard the splashing in the water. His mind had shifted away from the question as he noticed the change to the siren prince. He would be lying if he didn’t find it beautiful. The golden hue of the scales was unlike anything that he had seen before. He hadn’t expected for sirens to look that way either. Their book depicted them to look like monsters that would lure people in by their beauty, only to change into terrifying creatures before murdering them. Nikolai looked nothing like that. He noticed then that he had been staring at the other male. He shifted his gaze once more to look around the cave.

“I do not think it is dangerous. Look, I am going to say something and you are going to make fun of me for it. Just don’t be an yûcq, alright?” He doubted that he understood the common curse that his people used. His fingers fidgeted amongst themselves as they sat in his lap. He took a rather deep breath before speaking. “I do not know how to swim. I was never taught because they didn’t want for us to learn to be near water.” He refused to look at Nikolai for a few moments after he spoke due to his own embarrassment. He slowly turned to look at him though, his curiosity to his reaction overwhelming him. His cheeks had darkened to a light red.

The sheltered life of the prince didn’t surprise Nikolai. It’s one of the very first things he’d noticed about Alexander. Molded and shaped to his parents’ liking, never allowed to experience anything on his own. The siren prince shuddered at the thought of living that way. He’d always retaliated against his parents from the second he realized they wanted him to be nothing more than a trophy. A family jewel shaped to decorate the crown just like his sisters.

It sounded exhausted, being watched every minute of every day. Of course, Nikolai’s shackles were much worse. Still, he got to experience things like escaping to this moon pool, or roaming the streets of the cities. Exploring the ocean grounds whenever he pleased. So long as what he did didn’t interfere with the grand scheme, he was free. Conditional freedom, but free nonetheless. Less like shackles, more like a shock collar.

Nikolai’s brow lifted at the sound of the unfamiliar word. He let out a breathy chuckle, shifting so his bare shoulders peaked from behind the rocks, the golden scales made flower-like patterns up his arms and neck as his elbows rested on the rough ground, glistening like jewels in the ascending light of the night sky. “I wouldn’t even know what that is, but I don’t think I like how it sounds.” He teased. Alexander was right. The sharp contrast between their native languages was obvious even from just the few shared phrases.

He listened, curious as to what could possibly be keeping the warlock from jumping into the water in the midst of all the humidity. Admittedly, what followed should have been expected. Of course warlock children would be warned to stay away from the ocean, to be afraid of the big bad sirens. Still, it somehow managed to surprise Nikolai, a quiet snicker escaping him. “You’re kidding…” he didn’t miss the dusting of red over Alexander’s cheeks. Nikolai bit his bottom lip, looking away for a moment in an effort to hold back his laughter. He had to admit, the embarrassed hue was a rather cute look on the prince.

“Ah- I’m not laughing.” He finally responded, though his face contorted into a humorous grin. “I suppose you’re not good at everything.” He added with a tinge of pride. A siren’s agility in the water would be something that they always had full reign over. He couldn’t imagine a life without ever feeling the serene bliss that the ocean brought. He could settle for enjoying the pool himself, leaving the prince hot and humid by the rocks, yet he never paused to consider his next question.

“Don’t you want to give it a try?” The mischievous smirk morphed into an inviting smile, head tilting curiously. “You’ve already made it this far…” Nikolai’s hand extended toward the prince, crystal droplets of water trickling onto the dry ground. “Acoísi ve’moi.”

Alexander was sure that the other male was judging him for the way that his parents raised him, especially these past few months. He truly didn’t care though. He already knew that the situation had been less than ideal and he didn’t beard anyone to confirm it for him. He hoped Nikolai might understand where he was coming from though. His father seemed to be stricter than his own. He let out a quiet sigh, knowing he needed to stop judging Nikolai for these types of things. They both were on the same side for the first time. They needed to stick together, not tear each other down.

A small smile broke onto his face at Nikolai’s teasing. “It is a less than ideal curse word for someone who is mean about something. I do not know what it would translate to though.” He confessed. The shared language was much different than his own and he didn’t want to say something that wasn’t true. His eyes shifted to the patterns on his arms and neck. It was stunning, truly. He wished that he could stop admiring the other male, but it was much too hard in the current circumstance. His mood was quick to change though at the way in which he reacted to his confession.

He let out a gentle huff, crossing his arms across his chest as he heard the gentle snicker leave the other male. “This is why I did not want to tell you.” His words were softer, more like he was grumbling. “You know the history between our people. Obviously they wouldn’t allow us to go near the water. Besides, Cøeal did some terrible things and he rules the water and ocean.” He tried to explain. He doubted Nikolai knew of the god he was speaking of. After all, warlocks were very religious and would always think of their gods and goddesses in every situation.

He rolled his eyes then, shaking his head lightly. “You definitely are laughing.” He commented. He allowed his arms to drop then, hands returning to sit in his lap. The blush had finally faded. “I can assure you that this is not a competition.” His words were finally lightening some. He was growing more comfortable the longer that he spent around Nikolai. Despite the fact that the other male did seem to have his moments, he wasn’t a terrible person. At least, he didn’t think him to be as terrible as he originally did.

He slowly stood then, his eyes looking warily at the water. It looked to be rather deep, especially since Nikolai was easily able to fit in the pool. He took a deep breath before he slowly began to undress like the other male had before. He was left in only his undergarments and a necklace that had been hidden underneath his button up shirt. It held the symbol for the gods, a small blessing that had been passed through the generations of his family.

He took a few steps towards the pool, making sure that he didn’t slip now that his feet were bare. When he got close enough, he carefully took Nikolai’s hand. His own was shaking slightly as he did so, clearly nervous about this situation.

There was something to be said about Alexander being so trusting. In spite of all the things he’d been taught about sirens, all the horror stories and unfounded myths, cautionary tales to stay away, he chose to follow Nikolai out here. A creature of mystery, as his people claimed. The prince knew little about the siren, save his species and distaste for his father, yet chose to come along without a second’s thought. Just like he’d chosen to accept the invitation now to join him in the water. It reminded Nikolai of himself a bit. Always jumping in head first without measuring consequences. He was surprised to say the least that the sheltered warlock prince had it in him.

The moment he took the offered hand, there was no going back. The look of nerves on his face made it clear that he knew. The siren thought of pulling him into the pool, but decided against it, not wanting to traumatize him on his first dive. Instead, he kept hold of the hand if only for comfort, commanding the water to his will as it reached up and engulfed Alexander’s lower body, taking him and delicately placing him inside the pool beside Nikolai. “How’s it feel?”

He paused then, realizing that he probably wasn’t the best suited for teaching someone like Alexander to swim. How was he supposed to do so when he didn’t have legs and the warlock did? He hummed quietly in thought, golden eyes examining their surroundings. The cave was always most beautiful at this time of day, just as the sun set and the stars began to peak through. “I would teach you how to swim but-“ he gave a swish of his tail. A gentle reminder of how different the two of them really were. Still, that didn’t mean he couldn’t use his abilities to assist. “I think I’ll just let the water do it. It’s much more patient than I am.” He explained before suddenly letting go of the prince’s hand.

The pool itself took a life of its own, small waves dancing around them as the water formed a protective hold under Alexander, keeping him afloat. Nikolai watched him, making sure he was steadied before he began to lazily swim backwards. The water followed suit, bringing Alexander along with it as if he were swimming on his own. The quiet sounds echoed against the stone walls, creating a serene symphony. That had always been one of Nikolai’s favorite things about this place.

“Look at that, you’re a natural.” He quipped with a quiet snicker, knowing full well that the body of water was doing all the work for him.

Alexander’s breath hitched in his throat as he was gently pulled into the water. The sensation was odd and not something he truly expected. He hadn’t a clue that water was able to move in this way, though he was sure that Nikolai might’ve been influencing it some. Wait, was he even able to do that? The question quickly came to the forefront of his mind. He shook his head slightly to push it away. He needed to not allow his nerves to get the best of him. He would surely drown if he did. The water was always something that scared the warlocks. He almost couldn’t believe he was actually doing this.

He turned his head to glance around him, forcing his immediate panic to subside. The water was soothing compared to the humid air above, cooling him off immediately. “Honestly? It feels very weird. I do not like not having anything beneath my feet.” He confessed. His tone still held the worry that he felt. His grip on Nikolai’s hand was rather tight and his knuckles were white due to it. It took time before it felt as though his body adjusted to the way the water was. He kept his arms floating near the surface as he did so. It brought him more comfort that way.

It was then that he realized that he almost wanted to laugh at the irony of the situation. If his parents knew that he was here, they would most likely have a heart attack. No warlock would ever like the fact that their child learned to swim, especially from a siren.

“That isn’t a good thing to admit to your future husband you know, that you aren’t patient.” He commented. He glanced to him with a gentle smile, his words having a teasing tone. He was truly beginning to enjoy Nikolai’s company. There was something about the other male that made him feel as though he was safe. He couldn’t place it as either being the enjoyment of his presence after being kept away from everyone for such a long time or something else. He decided to go with the former, knowing it would be better for him to trust what he knew currently.

He let out a small sound of panic as the water began to move him along with Nikolai. His body tensed at the sudden movement, though he slowly began to relax as he got used to it. He decided to try and move his arms some. It just felt so odd for him to be doing. He shifted his hand to splash the other male at his comment. “Now I am going to become an incredible swimmer just out of spite.” He stated.

He couldn’t place what it was, but there was something about Alexander that made Nikolai feel like a kid again. Worry free, no shackles or collar, just enjoying the moment and feel of the water. Perhaps it was the prince’s amazement at everything around him. The irony of a siren showing a warlock the ways of the land was almost comical. There was so much out there that Alexander had probably never seen, and perhaps would never see. The dark thoughts plagued Nikolai’s mind every so often, but he shoved them aside. Nothing would ruin this moment of peace for him.

The corners of his mouth lifted at the prince’s comment. It wouldn’t have been hard to notice Nikolai’s lack of patience even if he hadn’t pointed it out. “Future husband huh? Who says I’ll even marry you?” He quipped. The siren allowed himself to talk as if he had a choice in the matter. As if they both did. And in a sense, they did. They could each chose to walk away from this and never look back. That, of course, would bring devastating consequences, and neither one of them would ever be that selfish. “I don’t know if you’ve heard but I don’t like to be tied down.”

The idea of marriage was something Nikolai never gave much thought to, even now that he was almost officially engaged. According to siren tradition, it was only official when the royal rings were exchanged. Admittedly, spending his life with someone else didn’t sound so horrible, even if that someone was Alexander. For a brief moment, he allowed himself to forget that this arrangement was part of a grander scheme. He didn’t need to know what that scheme was to know that his father was up to nothing good.

“Oh so you think you’re an expert now?” The question was laced with a playful tone and smirk to match. Nikolai’s hand lifted slightly, his palm rotating in a circular motion, and the water immediately followed his lead. He spun Alexander a few times, a chuckle of amusement escaping him, before he commanded the water to- “Stop.”

Just like that, it was still again. He’d made it to the center of the pool. A crescent moon now shone above them, its glow shining down on the siren scales and reflecting off the water. The glowing plants within the forest around them aided with lighting the open cave. He looked to Alexander, making a quick gesture with one hand, signaling the water to bring him closer. “Look up.” He said once the prince had joined him in the center. Stars hung around the moon, some of them still working to shine through the remaining clouds, but an enchanting view nonetheless. Nikolai kept his gaze fixated on the sky, never growing tired of it. “It really is beautiful.”

Alexander raised his eyebrows at Nikolai’s words, a smirk coming to his lips soon after. “I do think myself to be quite the catch. You should feel honored to marry me.” He joked. He would prefer to keep the air as light as he could between them. The idea that their parents were forcing them into this situation was always present in his mind. He let out a gentle laugh then, shifting some in the water. “I have heard that much. I can be very persuasive when needed.” He informed. His body was finally completely relaxed in the water. The banter between the two helped move his mind from it, allowing him to do so. He was actually enjoying this much more than he originally thought he might.

He closed his eyes for a few moments as he allowed himself to soak in the moment. He hadn’t a clue as to when he would be lucky enough to experience something like this again. He worried that they would be scolded when he returned to the palace, though he hoped his mother might just argue that they were getting to know each other more. Eloise always was a hopeless romantic. She pushed for him to be with someone he truly loved, but Edmund had more of a political scheme in mind. He believed it to be rather unfair as he was the one suffering from his parent’s decisions.

His eyes shot open as he was quickly spun around, letting out a sound in protest. The water drenched his hair while he did so. It caused for it to fall somewhat into his face. He looked at Nikolai as he finally stopped spinning, eyes narrowing some. “That was completely unfair of you. One of these days I am going to make the most annoying breeze follow you around and there will be nothing you can do to prevent it.” He warned. This side to Alexander was completely different from the one he displayed back in the castle. He preferred to be as carefree as he currently was. He felt free for the first time in his life.

He allowed for the water to move him towards the center of the pool with Nikolai. He tilted his head back to look up at the sky then, his expression softening. “It truly is.” He agreed, his voice quiet while doing so. He shifted to lean back some as he attempted to float on his back in order to look at the sky easier. “The only peace I normally feel is when I am gazing up at the night sky. I mapped all of the constellations for years in journals.” He admitted. He hid them away on the bookshelves in his room. He would pull them out every now and then to chart the changes. “I do not think I could ever tire of it.” He mumbled. His blue eyes were finally shining with his content.

There was something so satisfying about seeing Alexander riled up. Nikolai couldn’t shake the smirk of mischief that followed the warlock’s remark, his hand dramatically placed against his chest as he gasped. “Oh no, not a breeze! Whatever shall I do?” Though his dramatics were quickly subsided by the look of wonder on the prince’s face. Surely, he’d seen the moon and stars many times before. But nothing quite like this view from the pool below.

The siren’s eyes shifted to the man in front of him. His features looked different somehow. Not at all how they’d looked back at the palace when they first met. While Nikolai was being accused of not caring. He wondered then, if that was also a part of Alexander, or if it was simply a wall created by the pressure of his parents. He decided he liked this side of Alexander much better. At the very least, he was more fun to tease.

“You should see the view from our palace.” The phrase left Nikolai’s lips absentmindedly. He knew well enough how difficult it would be to get a warlock to the siren royal family estate. Not only for the distance, but the way in which the structure was built made it impossible to get inside from above water level. He knew before coming that most of their time together would be spent on land. Still he wondered what Alexander would think of the ocean. There was so much beauty to it that he may never get to experience.

A thought came to him, realizing how dark it had gotten and that they probably should be heading back. If only to save Alexander the scolding. “Wait here.” He instructed both for the prince and for the water that kept him afloat. He dove into the depths of the pool then, the golden tail trailing behind him for a few seconds before disappearing. The mouth of the underwater entrance to the ocean shone in a few streaks of light. Nikolai followed it, as he always did when taking this route back home.

He dove straight to the bottom once he’d reached the other side. Bundles of aragonite lay across the ocean grounds. Most of them hidden by seaweed or algae. The siren’s fingers wrapped around an outlier piece, a bit smaller than most, but still held its beauty. He made it back to Alexander within just a couple of minutes, his palm held out with the crystal.

Arägonite. It’s said to give grace and balance.” He stated with a grin, very obviously referring back to all the times the prince had stumbled on his way to the cave. And perhaps the way he’d fallen on his face in the water, though admittedly that was Nikolai’s fault. He reached out, taking the prince’s hand and placing the gem within it, its shape and color matching the ones found on Nikolai’s crown. “It’s also said to foster truth, and understanding. Though I’m not sure how accurate that is.”

Alexander glanced to him, allowing a soft laugh to leave his lips as he heard his comment. He shook his head lightly before returning his gaze to the sky above him. “You might believe it to be just a breeze. I can assure you that it will be the most annoying breeze. Do you know how you feel a hair touching your ear or neck and you can’t find it? That slight touch that bothers you the entire day? It will be like that. I will make it the most annoying gnat in the world.” He warned, the smile still on his face. It was clear he was enjoying this lighter mood between the two of them. He wouldn’t admit it, but he hated the way in which they had interacted before. It made him feel like he was stuck-up.

He let out a gentle hum as he began to relax more in the water. He kept his gaze focused on the sky above them, taking note of each of the stars he saw. The clouds were finally gone, leaving the moon and stars twinkling clearly. He was sure that there was still a breeze outside of the cave causing it. It was only then that he recognized the feeling in him that was bothering him before. It was peace. For the first time in his long life, he felt a peace. He truly wouldn’t trade it for the world.

He raised an eyebrow at the mention of the palace. “I would love to someday. I barely know anything about sirens. All I have been told were lies. Maybe you could show me it once the war finally subsides.” It was misplaced optimism that told him they were going to be able to end the war quickly. He hoped for years that it would stop only to be disappointed when it didn’t. He saw the strain it took on his parents and his people. He still believed their marriage might just end it.

He blinked at the order to stay where he was. “It is not as though I can go anywhere. I would drown if I tried.” He pointed out with a chuckle as he watched the other male dive beneath the water. He kept his gaze of his glittering scales until he disappeared from sight. The silence in the cave was deafening then, the only sounds being the movement of the water echoing against the cave walls. He closed his eyes to clear his mind. It was odd just how weird the absence of Nikolai felt in that moment. He guessed it was because he was still terrified of being sucked beneath the water and dying. After all, he had no clue how to properly swim. The water was the only thing keeping him afloat currently.

He only opened his eyes when he heard Nikolai resurface. His gaze immediately fell on his palm with the outstretched crystal. His eyes had widened as he examined it. “It is beautiful. I do not think I have seen it before.” He admitted in a murmur. He carefully took it from the other male as he handed it to him. “I could always use extra grace and balance. I can assure you the slippery conditions earlier are not my normal.” He stated, thinking back to the way he almost face planted multiple times. It was enough to tint his ears red once more. “Isn’t this what is on your crown?” He inquired. He cracked a smile at the mention of the truth and understanding. “Maybe it could be the key to helping unite us and our kingdoms.” He didn’t believe his own words in that instance.

Observant eyes watched Alexander take the crystal. In truth, it wasn’t anything extremely rare, or sacred. The multicolor gem could be found fairly easily. Commonly loved by most sea creatures for its colors and natural beauty. He didn’t think much of it past that. The tales told about it had never actually been proven. Though, admittedly, anytime Nikolai wore his crown he felt more at ease. His eyebrows raised in mild surprise when Alexander made the connection.

“It is.” He affirmed, his eyes glancing over at the crown that sat by his clothing. “As nice as that sentiment is…it would take much more than a crystal to-“ he trailed off, realizing his train of thoughts may have taken him somewhere he would have instantly regretted. He took the crystal back from the prince, raising it up above their heads. “If you hold it up to the light…” It turned a few times between Nikolai’s fingers until he achieved the desired angle, its edges catching the moonlight, casting small rays of multicolored lights over Nikolai’s skin.

He held it up a little longer before setting it back in Alexander’s palm. There was a beat of silence, followed by a defeated sigh as the siren allowed his body to sway with the water. “Suppose I should take you back before the king and queen send a search party.” There was a small smirk on his lips, but he didn’t try very hard to hide the fact that he didn’t want to go back there. Or rather, he didn’t want to leave. He fully expected Alexander to switch back into the perfect prince persona that had first greeted him and he wasn’t too eager to see that either.

He reached over, taking the prince’s hand and pulling him back toward the edge of the pool. Just as before, he commanded the water to help. Alexander was lifted and safely set back on the dry rocks. “Wait there, I’ll help you dry off.” He quickly dove under the water, enjoying the last few seconds of serene before it stirred around him, casting a glow just as before. Nikolai’s head emerged from the water with a slight groan. Changing back into legs was always the slightest bit uncomfortable.

He placed his hands by the edge, but luckily remembered to warn Alexander before jumping out. “I suggest you turn around or you may see something you’re not meant to see until after marriage.” The tease left Nikolai’s lips so naturally. He didn’t think much of it and waited until the warlock looked away before pushing himself out of the pool.

Alexander seemed glad to hear that the crystal indeed was the one that was in Nikolai’s crown. It was one of the things that he had immediately noticed when the other male walked closer to him. The crown was absolutely stunning. It brought a bright smile to his lips. He blinked as he heard Niko’s next words though, turning his head to look at him rather than at the crystal. He noticed that the other male never seemed to truly believe in supernatural presences that would help guide them in the ways that they needed. He had been very upset earlier when the warlock gods and goddesses were mentioned, and now he was doubting the influence of the crystal. It was something rather odd to him, especially since he was raised to believe in such things.

He didn’t allow that to linger in his mind too long though, shifting his gaze once more to watch as he lifted the crystal into the moonlight. He could immediately notice the way that it caused little lights on Nikolai’s skin. “That is incredible and beautiful.” He confessed in a soft tone. He couldn’t believe how much he had missed due to his parents keeping him close to the castle grounds. It made him rather upset now that he knew. He gladly took the crystal back from Nikolai, holding onto it tightly so that he wouldn’t lose it. He intended to keep it on his nightstand where it would be safe for the time being.

His expression fell at the mention of getting back to the castle grounds. He had been having such a wonderful time here and didn’t want to go back. “I only hope that they believe we are bonding more, which I think that we are.” He commented. His disappointment was easily read on his face then as he was helped back to the edge of the pool. He didn’t want for this night to end. This truly was the most fun that he had in years and the thought of returning back to what he knew pained him.

He didn’t speak until he was lifted fully back onto the rocks. He made sure that his footing was stable before he moved away from the edge of the pool. He turned back to look at Nikolai when he spoke. He offered him a smile then, shaking his head. “I appreciate your offer, but there is no need. I can dry myself off.” He assured. He knew multiple ways to do so, perks of being a warlock. His eyes were focused on the other male as he moved beneath the water and returned back to the surface once more. He hadn’t been witness to a siren changing into either one of their forms before, so this intrigued him greatly.

He quickly turned around at his words, realizing immediately what he meant. He was grateful to have his back to Nikolai as his eyes had widened and cheeks flushed as he did so. He decided to not focus on it, rather focusing on drying himself off. He lifted both of his hands, pressing the insides of his wrists together. He quickly shifted them so that his palms touched. When he opened them and faced them towards his body, the water immediately evaporated and it looked as though he hadn’t been in it at all. He moved to carefully pull his clothes back on then.

The acoustics of the cave played around them as Nikolai pulled himself from the water. It took him a moment to steady himself back on his legs, taking a few steps forward to ensure he was ready to walk. It sometimes felt like walking on pebbles the first few minutes after the change. His body seemed to be readjusting to walking, causing him to sway a bit/ Alexander had turned around at his request, but the siren could still see the tint of red on his ears. He decided to keep his comments to himself for once. With what little he knew about the warlock’s upbringing, he could still safely assume most, if not all of this, was new to him.

He watched for a moment as the other dried himself off. It was very similar to what sirens did. Controlling and changing water into whatever they needed was a major part of their skill set. From creating typhoons to calming a raging sea storm. They were all born with a deep connection to rbw water. Nikolai closed his eyes then, nothing but still silence for a moment, followed by the quiet hiss of the water evaporating from his body and hair, rising into the air in the form of a soft mist. Once he was as dry as he’d come in, he pulled his pants on first, making sure he was decently covered for Alexander’s sake.

“Alright, it’s safe now.” He couldn’t help the subtle smirk on his lips at the amusement that came with seeing the prince so easily flustered. He pulled his shirt on next, buttoning it up and tucking it into his bottoms. Once everything was back in place, he adjusted the crown on his head, making sure it was secure before stepping closer to Alexander. The accessory was special to him, not for what it meant but because Nikolai had crafted it with his own hands. It’s not something he did often, and probably not something he’d be sharing with the prince either. The air felt cooler than before, the breeze filtering through the openings of the cave, creating a quiet hum. Soothing enough to put anyone to sleep. Nikolai inhaled, letting out a long, suffering breath.

“Let’s go, moi préinci, your castle awaits.” The words were laced with playful drama as Nikolai’s hand extended out towards the other. He didn’t want to have an accident on his hands now that they’ve made it this far without one. The moon hung high in the sky now, and the siren prince wondered if he could leave Alexander and continue his exploring. He loved wandering the markets at night. Maybe one day he could share it with Alexander. The intrusive thought made him shrink back a bit, reluctant to grow accustomed to having the warlock around. For someone as social as he, Nikolai spent a lot of time exploring alone. He had no intentions of changing that anytime soon.

Alexander decided it would be best to turn his gaze back to the crystal in his hand once he stood then as he didn’t want his curiosity to get the best of him. He knew if he even bothered to try to glance over his shoulder at Nikolai, it would cause for the siren to tease him for the rest of eternity. He doubted that he would mind it since the banter between the two of them was something he greatly enjoyed. It was nice to not have to worry about saying the wrong thing and being punished for it. He almost couldn’t believe his luck in this instance. He was sure that if he ended up marrying Nikolai’s sister instead, he would walk on egg shells the rest of his life in worry of speaking the wrong thing.

He fiddled with the crystal for a few moments, eyes analyzing each part of it. Despite the small size, he truly adored it. He carefully slipped it into his pocket before hearing the soft hissing of the water evaporating. It was something that startled him, causing for him to jump slightly. He had grown accustomed to the silent magic that the warlocks used. It only made him feel as though there was more for him to learn about Nikolai and his people. For the first time in his life, he was truly excited for something.

He turned to face the other male when Nikolai told him he was allowed to do so. He rolled his eyes at the smirk he noticed on his lips. “I am not used to seeing anyone improperly. I almost should not have to tell you that. I am sure you have already made the assumption as to why.” He commented, the blush gone from his cheeks but still present on his ears. He watched as he placed the crown carefully on his head. “You know, that is beautiful. It is much different than what my people wear.” He admitted. The differences between the two people were so stark that it was almost laughable. He glanced towards the sky after noticing the way in which the moonlight caused reflections in the crystals.

The air was much nicer than it had been before and he knew he would enjoy this walk more compared to earlier in the day. He looked back to Nikolai as he spoke, reaching to carefully take his hand. “I almost do not want to go back.” He confessed in a quiet tone as they began to walk. He made sure that his steps were as careful as they could be now. He almost slipped a few times again, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as before. “I plan on saying that we ended up spending some time in the gardens to get to know each other better. You needed some air as you weren’t feeling the best due to your headache and I offered the gardens as a solution.” He informed. It was the best lie he could think of on the spot. He doubted anyone would believe they hadn’t done so.
