Persephone knew that if she ate or drank anything in the Underworld, she would have to stay there forever. Even though Hades begged her to have just a sip, she refused.

Plot

Gods and Pomegranates

Demeter was strict but loving over her beloved daughter. It was rare for the Goddess to let such perfection out of her sight. Naturally, as a mother, that was normal. Protecting Persephone was her goal as a caring mother to the younger Goddess. Yet Demeter had duties of her own to attend to, duties where she must leave Persephone to her own devices. Demeter's duties were to both mortals and nature alike. For without nature and life, mortals would be no more. Each day Demeter blessed their harvests and their growth of food and plants for them to live a full life. This included the wildlife and flowers her own daughter enjoyed playing around.

Roaming the fields of fresh grass that grew to Persephone's knees, and flowers plaited into the soft red of her locks. The same hair that blew in the light breeze of the day, sunlight granting a happy glint in her eyes. Nothing but pureness came from this immortal. She had such innocence around her, such grace. It was way Demeter did her best to keep Persephone under a watchful eye. No one, especially a God, could keep a single one under their watch all the time. Gods had certain duties that needed full attention. However, Persephone was still young and new to this world which made her have such an innocent aura compared to most. Demeter's absence from the girl would be her downfall.

Every so often, the young Goddess was visited in these fields by another God. Most pain no attention to Persephone, mortal nor God with the fear of Demeter's wrath. However, there was one who had no problem or fear of dealing with the wrath of Demeter. TheKing of the Underworld some called the God by. One who mortals talked very little about, afraid of his presence, afraid of what he would do to them if they spoke of him. Very little was known about him to the mortals, but he was known to the Gods. Some called him brother, but none called him husband. None called him lover or spouse. He was without wife or partner. Not once was there much interest from him to follow in either of his brother's doings.

As for Persephone, she had heard the stories of Hades and his Underworld. There was no doubt plenty of rumors that had reached her ears. The rumors of the harsh hand Hades rules his kingdom with, a kingdom that frightened her with a ruler who would have terrified her if she ever met. What the girl was not aware of, was that she had already, in fact, met the ruler. A God who was as cunning as the basilisk. Logical, and brilliant. All the Goddess cared about, was having a casual conversation every so often. That was all, for he never stayed long, perhaps with the worry of an unwanted quarrel with Demeter. It wasn't very often that the two immortals met, just enough for Persephone to remember fondly of the few times, surrounded by her mother's work.

It wasn't until the day Persephone came across a rather distinct flower in the fields. Such a flower was unfamiliar, certainly not her own mother's work. As if compelled to do so, she leaned down to carefully pick the flower from the ground. A beautiful flower such as this should not go unnoticed, especially so unique. The flower was the craftsmanship of the King, so carefully detailed and colored to perfection. Only meant to catch none other than sweet Persephone's eye. It certainly served its purpose. Simply a few moments later did the ground beneath her feet shake causing her to look up from the flower, taking a few steps back from the crack that began to form on the Earth. Eventually, she was practically running backward, afraid to remove her eyes from the growing crack. In fact, she soon fell on her back, the delicate flower leaving her grasp and welting.

Hades desired a bride and petitioned his brother, Zeus, one of his daughters. The god offered him Persephone, the daughter of Demeter. So Hades found himself appearing in the meadows to speak with the girl, never staying long enough for her to realize who he was. Hades fell in love with the one with the delicate ankles, adoring how her crimson hair and sparkling eye flashed like the sun on the horizon. Knowing that Demeter would resist the marriage, Zues assented to the forceful abduction of the girl.

The day had finally arrived. Apart from Demeter, lady of the golden sword and glorious fruits, she Persephone was gathering flowers over a soft meadow: roses, crocuses, beautiful violets, irises, and hyacinths. Hades waited for her to discover the narcissus, which the Earth made to grow at the will of Zeus and to please Hades. It was to be a snare for the bloom-like girl - a marvellous, radiant flower. It was a thing of awe whether for deathless gods or mortal men to see: from its root grew a hundred blooms and it smelled most sweetly, so that all wide heaven above and the whole earth and the sea's salt swell laughed for joy.

Hades grinned asthe girl reached out with both hands to take the lovely toy. The wide-pathed earth yawned there in the plain, and Hades sprang out upon her.

As the earth parted and the God sprang out, there was no doubt left in Persephone's mind on who the once mysterious man was. Only Hades would be able to reach the earth by such means. The fact that it had been the God of the dead she had been conversing with for so long was a shock itself. Her eyes were wide, staring up at the God before her. The chariot he was in was onyx and was designed with golden embroidery around it. The horses' hooves were like thunder on the earth. As the hand grabbed her, she was pulled securely onto the chariot.

Of course, she was afraid. The rumors of Hades had terrified her the most, afraid of what he may have in store for her. Had she done something to upset him? To anger him? What had she done to persuade him to do this act? Either way, she clung to him. It was her only option at the moment, that or be flung off the chariot for it had been going so face to descend back into the Underworld. It wasn't long before Persephone lost sight of the sun on Earth, her breathing heavy as tears formed in her eyes. Tears of fear, for the most part.

Even when the chariot stopped, Persephone was afraid to move. Her eyes were closed so tightly. Red locks that had once consisted of beautiful flowers were now wilted and fell from her hair. While the red locks spilled into her face, she only finally opened her eyes when she was set on the ground. Beneath her feet was hard rock, but sturdy. She was afraid to look anywhere around her, for she did not wish to discover what horrors were held in the Underworld. At least she was able to stare up at Hades through her tearful eyes, her breathing shaky. She was afraid to move away from him still.

"Explain to me... Please." She requested in her soft voice. Surely it was not too much to ask from him, just a request to understand. "What have I done?" She continued, hands rubbing her arms. It was cold down here, she did not like it. There was no natural light or even a single flower that grew from the ground. Not even a single blade of green grass.

He owed her an explanation at the very least. If not to her, then to her mother who would soon discover the abduction of Persephone.
