A Friendship Forgotten

"Zak, enough!" she yelled, grabbing both of his wrists and staring at him defiantly. "Honestly, there is no need for this!" She wondered why the hell there wasn't any teachers in the lunchroom, but she would have to deal with this on her own. Kori seemed to do okay, but she didn't want to take the chance of either of them getting hurt. Aude was a softball player, so she had a bit more muscle than most girls in her class - at least the ones who drank expensive coffee and painted their nails all day.

"Grah, fine," Zak growled, lowering his fists, but still looked at Kori with a face of contempt. "Next time you bump into me, you're toast."

Kori just stared with a bored look on his face and shrugged his shoulders, turning around and walking away, heading towards the roof access so he could be alone again.

"Kori!" Aude called, glancing between the two males. She wanted to run after Kori; but why? It wasn't like she could ask him any questions, as he didn't seem to want anything to do with her. She sighed, glancing down and leaning against the wall. She was confused, unsure of what to do now. She might as well give him some space for now.

Kori returned to the roof and sat down, leaning against the fence which bordered the roof of the school. "What's that girl's problem?" he said to himself, taking out his lunch: a can of sardines and a bottle of milk. He pondered the events of the day as he ate, taking off his hood so his ears could be free. No one bothered looking up at roofs anyway, so he decided that it was safe for him to do so. Besides, no one could see the top of his head if anyone looked up anyways.

{{time skip to after school}}

Aude walked out quietly. Ever since the lunch incident, she had been in a grumpy mood that not even Tania could fix. As of now, despite the mass of bodies around her, she was walking alone; Tania had after school club today so she was still inside. Aude was simply to hop onto her bus and go home, but she'd remembered something during her last class. She used to know a kid named Kori while she was in the orphanage. She had high doubts that it was him; what were the odds of that even happening? She shrugged her shoulders. Maybe she could find Kori, ask him... No, that was silly. She continued to walk towards her bus stop.

Kori walked out of the school, heading towards the park near by. He walked with his usual somber pace, stopping by a lone tree on a hill at the park. Kori put his bag down as he closed his eyes and thought about his day. "Well, could have been worse," he said to himself. At least he didn't get found out on the first day.

Aude stopped when she was almost to her bus stop. She didn't want to go home at this moment, so she took a quick look at the route chart. She was disappointed when she saw that they didn't really stop at anywhere she wanted to go so, instead, she started to walk on the cracked sidewalk. At first, she didn't know where she was going. After a few minutes, though, she realized she had somehow walked her way to the park and was at it's front area. She sighed, pulling out her phone. It was best to text her mom that she wasn't going to be home right away, so she did so and then allowed herself a calming walk through the most empty park. She was enjoying the sound of the birds and the rustle of the wind through the trees as she sat on a bench. For a moment, she wondered what Kori was doing. But she quickly shook the thought out of her head; it was obvious that the male didn't want to be friends with her.

Kori closed his eyes, listening to the breeze flowing through the tree as he grabbed a leaf out of midair as it was floating downwards. Placing the leaf on his mouth, he used it as a whistle, a talent he developed back in the orphanage which he used to help calm himself down. Kori then played a tune he learned many years ago, taught to him by someone, but he couldn't remember who. Probably the owner, a nice lady.

Aude was almost in a trance of peace, thinking of nothing, just enjoying the sense of freedom the quiet was giving her. It was disturbed, though, by a whistling. She opened her eyes and looked around; it sounded slightly familiar, the tune of it, but she couldn't quite remember it. She stood up, determined to find the source. She rounded a corner or two and stopped in her tracks and yelped slightly, hiding behind one of the trees. She had found Kori.

Kori's ears perked up as he heard a small yelp from behind him. Turning around to see what made the noise, he saw Aude standing there, staring at him. "What do you want?" Kori asked, somewhat disrespectfully. He threw away the leaf.

Aude awkwardly shuffled out from behind the tree, looking at everything but Kori. "I-I'm sorry," she stuttered, biting her lip briefly out of nervousness. "I heard the whistling and I was just curious and..." She trailed off, turning her head down to stare at her feet.

"I'm not mad or anything," Kori said, brushing his finger under his nose like he always does when he says something nice. "So, was there something you needed? Or were you just following me?" Kori picked up his bag, glaring at Aude. He still had a serious look on his face, showing no emotion.

"U-uh, neither. I just wanted to enjoy the weather and heard the whistling, so..." She trailed off, looking down at her feet and shuffling them. "Though it would be nice to know why you keep running away," she breathed, hoping he didn't hear her.

Kori's ears twitched a little when he heard Aude mutter under her breath. "The reason for me running away is a secret," Kori said, picking up his bag and walking away.

Aude ripped her head around to look at him, cocking an eyebrow in confusion. "What...?" she mumbled under her breath. Her curiosity was getting the better of her at that time, so she quickly whipped around to chase after him. "Wait, know what!" she called out.

Kori could hear Aude running after him, so he began to run as well, holding his hood down as he ran. He was starting to panic again, breathing heavily. Painful memories began to cloud his mind as he tripped over an exposed tree root, falling over and letting go of the end of his hood, which blew off the top of his head, leaving his cat ears exposed.

Aude ran and called after the male. "Kori!" She halted as soon as he tripped. At first, as she tentatively took a few steps, everything looked normal. But then she noticed. He had... ears. She let out a slight gasp. "Kori..."

She then remembered Kori, from the orphanage. How could she forget? A couple tears pricked at her ears as she then rushed forward, attempting to help him up.

Kori got on his knees, a bit stunned after the fall. He reached for his head, noticing his hood was down. Suddenly, a wave of panic appeared on his face as he fumbled around with his hood, struggling to get it back on. He didn't notice Aude approaching him as he did so.
