A Friendship Forgotten

Kori ran out the entrance of the orphanage, tears in his eyes, as he ran towards his first and only friend, Aude. As he reached her, he grabbed her sleeves, bawling, "Please don't go, Aude! You can't! Don't leave me!" His friend was adopted, and she was being taken away from him by her new parents. His ears were drooping. He didn't care what her new parents thought about him, being a neko and all.

_____It had been 11 years ago when Aude was adopted. The day was warm and slightly breezy, the sun only covered with a few stray clouds that wandered across a light sky. "Please don't go, Aude! You can't! Don't leave me!" She frowned, pain showing in her young eyes. If she could choose, she wouldn't go. She didn't want to leave Kori, not in the slightest bit. Being adopted was not worth loosing her friend. As he grabbed her sleeves, she wrapped her arms around him in a tight embrace. "I'm so sorry, Kori," she whispered, tears starting to prick at her own eyes. "If I didn't have to leave, then I wouldn't. I promise you." Her breath shuddered a bit as she pulled away, looking him in the eyes. There was no way she was going to be able to convince her new parents to adopt him as well, she had already tried. She wasn't exactly sure what else she could tell him at this point. Instead, she sighed, and wrapped him in another tight hug.

Present Day

Kori sighed as he walked up to the high school. It was his first day, and a cold one at that. Kori had his hood up not only to keep his head warm, but to hide his ears as well. He didn't want anyone to know that he was a neko, otherwise he would most likely be subject to the bullying and isolation he had to go through many years ago. His tail felt uncomfortable squished under his backpack and stuffed under his shirt. He kept his head down as to not make eye contact with any of the other students walking in.

Aude was simply sifting through her locker, gather all of the necessary materials for the classes that were up next. She didn't pay much attention to any of the other people that

occupied the same hallway as her. At this point, they didn't really matter until she had to wade her way through them to get to her first class. All she focused on was her supplies and her friend Tania. A short, heavy-framed girl with lots of muscle but little restrain on the volume of her voice. Occasionally, Aude would nod or say something agreeable to her friend until she hoisted her bag onto her shoulder. She then started to actually converse with the girl. "There is absolutely no way that could happen," she retorted, her eyes rolling. Her friend stopped talking and poked Aude's shoulder, gesturing to a boy walking down the hall. "He must be new here," she shrugged, pulled Tania along to their class.

Kori went up to the main office of the school to get his schedule and explain some things to the principal, who was already notified of his enrollment beforehand and of his situation with being a neko. After the meeting, the bell rang, signaling the start of first period. Kori looked at his schedule for his first class. Math with a Mrs. Charlene. He headed out to his first class, still keeping his hood on.

Aude continued to drag Tania along, dodging among the crowds of people to get to her class in a timely manner.

She detested being late to class; not only were they're repercussions, but there was no doubt she would miss some sort of material. Her first period was math with Mrs. Charlene; Tania was a room over with Mr. Calliwell. She walked with Aude to class every morning due to the short distance. For the rest of the day, though, they were separated. After a quick farewell to her friends, she pushed inside the classroom and promptly flopped down onto her chair.

Kori spotted the classroom he was supposed a few minutes after the bell for first period rang. He looked at his schedule to check if the room number was correct. Knocking on the door frame, Mrs. Charlene looked from her desk and glanced at Kori. "Ah, welcome! You must be Kori" Mrs. Charlene said, getting up from her desk and leading Kori into the room. "Pardon the noise, Kori. Class? Excuse me, class?" The class quieted down to hear what Mrs. Charlene had to say. "Class, this is Kori Letras. He shall be joining us from now on." Kori nodded from under his hood. "You make take a seat over there next to Miss Aude Gonthier."

"Okay," Kori muttered as he walked over to the girl he was gestured to and took the seat in the desk next to her. His ears twitched very subtly underneath his hood.

Aude smiled widely and gave a small wave to Kori, sticking out a hand for him to shake. "Hello!" Her face radiated warm greetings,

eyes smiling along with her mouth. "You already know this, but I'm Aude," she pipped, legs swinging back and forth underneath her chair. She was excited that a new person had joined their class. She always tried to be nice to the new people, or just people in general.

Kori stared at the hand for a while, then at the girl. He wasn't very fond of making physical contact with regular humans due to some past issues, so he simply nodded at Aude, rubbing the underside of his nose with his finger. That was a habit of his to show he was being nice. He then turned to face forward again to listen in on what the teacher was saying. "Sure, you may like me now," Kori muttered to himself. "Let's see how much you like me when you find out what I am." He sighed.

She continued to smile despite the fact that her hand shake was rejected.

shifting in her seat to face forward in the class. While she was pulling out her textbook, she swore she heard Kori say something; knowing how much muttering was going on in the classroom, however, it was probably somebody else. As she followed the directions on the bored, she found herself thinking back to the days in orphanage.

((Time Skip))

After class ended, Kori quickly got up and left the classroom. It was a block day, so he only had three of his classes that day. His tail felt stiff from being underneath his jacket for a long time so he tried to look for a place where no one could see him. Kori decided to go up to the roof through the staircase (the school was 3 stories tall). Making sure no one was following him, he quickly made his way to the roof and shut the door behind him. He took of his jacket and let his tail wag around a little, taking a seat and twitching his ears. He closed his eyes, but tried not to doze off because he only had 15 minutes of break time before his next class.

Aude stood up and stretched, arms arched above he head in a crescent form. Class was over, but she had stayed

a couple of extra minutes to finish up her homework. It was always nice to do it before she got home. She had plenty of time to get it done today, but it was better to get a head start. After she lowered her arms and put on her cotton, silver jacket, she swung her light backpack over her shoulder and headed out of the quiet classroom. Some fresh air would be nice, she thought, her shoes quietly pattering on the floor of the hallway, mostly drowned out by the other student's chatter. The noise was pleasant, a reminder that she wasn't alone anymore. She knew a place that most students didn't know about - and, the staff didn't care to tell them, but they never came up there anyways - that she normally headed up to on such block days to hang out for a bit. After turning a corner, she slipped into a door and followed the stairs all the way up the three story building, her footsteps echoing throughout the otherwise silent staircase.

Once she was at the top, she opened the door quietly and peaked out. It seemed, at first glance, that there was

nobody out there and she didn't hear the voices of any other people. A sigh of relief escaped her lips and she stepped out, releasing the handle and letting it shut behind her. She doubted that she would get in any trouble, but if there was even the chance, she'd like to avoid it - just a piece of her personality. She set her backpack down near the door itself, making her feel a bit less weighed down despite the fact that the chestnut brown bag wasn't all that heavy to begin with.

Kori's ears perked up as he heard the door leading to the roof open and close. He immediately got up and quickly put on his jacket, hoping that the person that arrived at the roof wouldn't see his ears or tail. Turning around, he saw the girl who he sat next to during math. His eyes were filled with fear as he panted heavily and sweat ran down the sides of his face. Kori glared at her for a while. Did she see? he thought to himself.

She flipped around, faintly hearing a shift and the sound of panting. For a moment, her heart stopped; she

wasn't sure what she had walked in on or who was there. She flinched, eyes wide, before she caught eyes of the new boy. Oh, it was him. She briefly wondered what he was doing up here, but then it was most likely logical he also wanted to get some fresh air. Shuffling her right foot awkwardly, she smiled sheepishly.

"Oh, hi, Kori!" she pipped, leaning forward slightly to get a better look at him. He looked rather nervous,

which caused her smile to turn into a worried from. "Hey..." she muttered, chewing on her bottom lip slightly. "You okay?" Her own question echoed through her ears as she leaned forward more, attempting to lay a hand on his forehead. "You're not sick, are you?"

Kori stepped backward, tripping over his bag in the process. Falling on his backside, he quickly got back up and picked up his bag. "I'm fine," Kori said quietly, brushing past Aude to get back inside. He then suddenly got memory flashbacks of being beat up at the orphanage, causing him to trip and fall down a couple steps. He stumbled a little as he got back up, leaning against the wall for support. "I can't let anyone know..." he said to himself, half-conscious.

"Kori!" she called, concern flooding over her emotions. She rushed over to the stairs, yanking the door

open farther, completely disregarding her backpack. She quickly covered the steps that separated her from the other male, the lip chewing commencing once again as anxiety plagued her. Had she done something? No matter, she told herself, shaking her head. Carefully reaching out, she attempted to support him by grasping onto his one shoulder, figuring he'd need help getting down the stairs.

"I can help myself," Kori mumbled as he pulled his shoulder away from Aude. He used the handrail next to the wall to keep himself standing as he slowly walked down the stairs, stumbling a few times but quickly catching himself. He wasn't able to use his tail for balance for obvious reasons.

A small pout worked its way onto Aude's face, confusion filling her as to why Kori wouldn't

accept her help. There was obviously something wrong... she hadn't done something to upset him, had she? Worry churned in her stomach as she continued to follow him, making sure nothing further happened. She flinched every time he stumbled, ready to rush down and attempt to catch him if he happened to fall forwards.

The bell rang again, signaling the end of break. Kori, who was still holding his bag in his free hand, hurried down the stairs to get to his next class. The halls were already emptying out, but he knew Aude was still behind him. He tripped once more, but he poked out his tail a tiny bit to help him regain his balance, then put on his bag and limped toward his next class. He didn't care if he was late, he just wanted to get away from the girl behind him.

Aude stopped walking, crossing her arms and pouting. She didn't understand why this

guy was so opposed to her help. There was obviously an issue and brushing her off when she was just offering her assistance just didn't make sense to her. "Kori," she said flatly, a slight scowl on her face. "What the hell is the issue here?" She attempted to hold her voice to a calmer tone, but at this point, she was becoming frustrated.

(Time Skip to lunch time)

Kori left his class to return to the roof. On his way to his locker, he bumped into a bigger student, a junior by the looks of him.

"Hey, watch it, kid," the student said, pushing Kori to the ground.

Great, a bully, just what I need, Kori said to himself. "Sorry." Kori got back up, but the kid stepped in front of him.

"
Don't think you can get away that easily," the bully said, cracking his knuckles. Kori just stared. He's dealt with bullies before. He knows how to handle them.

Aude took a small bit of her pudding, listening to Tania chatter on like a squirrel about what had happened during class. She was absentmindedly listened, glancing around the cafeteria. She immediately set down her food when she saw Zakarias Berg was messing with Kori. She immediately stood up, stomping up to him. "Zak!" she yelled, fists clenched angrily at her sides. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"

"Stay out of this. I'm just teaching Mr. Rude here who's boss," Zak said, clenching his hand into a fist. Kori just stared at the bully with unwavering eyes, different from the one that shown when Aude surprised him on the roof.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Kori said bluntly, taunting the bully.

"
Why you..." Zak took a swing at Kori, who simply sidestepped, dodging the punch and tripping Zak, making him fall to the ground. Zak grunted as he got back up for another go at Kori.
