4th Edition [Chrysanthemum Petals in Rain]

Do we have opinions on rerolling to 4th? I honestly wouldn't mind. I'm interested in getting my feet wet.

Same, but I have some reading to do yet. :-P Are you thinking totally new things or as close as can reasonably be made to current?

Well I like our current character interactions that built up, so in that sense I like staying as close as permissible to what we have now. On the other hand we could just wrap up ben's story line and then roll up fresh to deal with charles. I didn't get the feeling people were particularly sold on my current one.

My personal opinion:

Re-origination available (that is, we create characters from 4th ed's rules, then add in the 60 kicker, and whatever mod-XP we've gained). If you're happy with your current character, and feel they translate well, update them to 4th ed. If not, or if they would suffer significantly, feel free to change the character.

Character interactions would be 'preserved' just as during the 3-mod refactor window (e.g. Oh, hi Mirumoto Gregor, I liked your poetry earlier <suspension of disbelief>) even if the underlying mechanics change, to the degree that such adaptation is possible.

I'd really like to go to 4th ed, just for the fun of playing the new edition, as well a chance to get a taste of it before any HoR 3 starts up.

I'm also okay with Rob's suggestion of finishing out my arc in 3rd, then doing the upgrade to 4th for Charles' stuff.

We could do this if we all wanted, the only downsides I'm seeing currently are:

1. Weird impossibilities in the change over (Maro can now only attack once a round with his bo staff), which have already been addressed, and I'm fine with ignoring them when need be.

2. I won't get to play my Mirumoto in 4th >.>

Unless someone wants to run a bit of stuff in between my campaign stuff, though I plan on ending the campaign with my final few mods (as a warning).

1. I have no solid opinions on that. Mostly if something doesn't work in 4th (Looking at you, multiple actions spell, or Rob's super-guard-shiba) I'm fine with shrugging at it and moving on. Reworking is probably going to be necessary to comply with mechanics a tad, though if someone feels exceptionally strongly about it, we can probably make adjustments.

2. If Rob wants to abandon his arc, and make an edition transition after my last two mods, I can write a small interstitial 4th ed arc so you can get a chance to play in 4th ed Charles. :-P

I have plenty of ideas I can whip up.

I don't really have an opinion either way, but if we do switch to 4th ed I'll probably either rework Yoritomo Yuki or make a new character.

I kinda agree with Katie. The little amount of 4th ed that I have read shows me that my Seppun will not be the awesome investigator she is now. So I'll have to think about how to rework her to get the same kind of playing experiance out of her.

I agree; hence my suggestion to 're-originate' the characters. If something doesn't work anymore, it allows people to change clan / school / whatever to fix their 'play experience'

One other odd caveat for 4th ed play...

I am going to make a prediction that Enemies of the Empire will be coming out at GenCon. This may make writing enemies for 4th ed a bit easier (as well as possibly update some mechanics I personally am curious on).

Seeing as I don't think we'll have more than one game between now and then, holding a character creation session or two might work out well, and then let me and the other GMs read that book before we start on the new system.

After chatting with Rob, it looks like the 'Ben finishes his arc, then 4th ed happens' will be the game-plan.

I have a copy of Enemies of the Empire, so I can do an appropriate short interstitial after the 4th ed swap to transition into Charles' epic arc of epic-ness.

I hope everyone is ready for the season that comes after Fall. >.>

Can the GM kill my character from the Goat Clan for 4th ed? :)
Fixed, and Yes.

(Do recall we are playing in the HoR timeline, but approx 40-50 years before the campaign began)

I was wondering what folks are thinking about updating their characters versus making new ones. I'm thinking of making a new one, most likely a Hida, but that could leave us without a courtier. Not that Shiori was the greatest courtier, but it seems like we should have one in the party. Any thoughts?

I can play the 4th ed version of Mai, maybe we can just have people post what they are interested in? Maybe it will work out. :)

Plz advise what houserules stay/go for 4th ed. thx.
Almost/all of them go except ones like 'humanoid only' probably a no spider rule. Also any errata posted at the top of AEG's errata/rules FAQ thread are kosher.

A link to the errata page might be useful. Also, after looking at the fourth ed book again, Shiori wouldn't convert badly to 4th ed. However, I'm getting a little tired of her. I know I mentioned maybe playing a Hida before, but the Utaku Battle Maiden school sounds pretty good in 4th ed too. I was also wondering how rewards for previous characters would apply to new characters for 4th ed. For instance, Shiori got a rank of status from a mod. Would that rollover to a new character, or is that reward just lost if I make a new character?

Errata!

My gut instinct on houserules would be that the underlined ones be removed:

House Rules:

Character Creation

  • Human Samurai Only
  • 60 bonus Karma, raising the allotment from 40 to 100, before ads/disads (The base number of points is now 40 instead of 45)
  • No spider clan
  • MoW and MoC supplements allowed. http://www.l5r.com/products/rpg/masters-of-war-dojos/
    http://www.l5r.com/images/l5r-mocwebsup.pdf
  • No schools with the Ninja tag
  • No Pre-hidden emperor schools or nanashi-mura
  • Great Destiny Banned
  • Great Potential: Banned
  • Most HoR rules http://heroes-of-rokugan.com/charcreation.html (This may require some more skimming as I'm not honestly sure what needs to be changed here)
  • Bloodlines mostly banned (I don't recall what these were now...unless it was things like Blood of Toturi)
  • Sacred Weapons allowed generally
  • Shuggies get 1 bonus spell if they hit rank 2 during character creation

Gameplay

  • All skills explode on 9 at rank 10. At rank 10 raises are no longer capped.
  • Called shots allowed in duels (Now an actual rule!)
  • Brag once per module for glory.
  • Iajitsu is not a weapon skill (Now an actual rule!)
  • HoR House rules http://www.heroes-of-rokugan.com/3rd_Ed ... ersion.pdf (Needs to be viewed again)
  • Arrow always hit spell only allows one raise, and 1 per raise called by the shuggie.
  • Tsuruchi Longbow Special Rules: +2k0 DR. +10 TN if fired from horseback. Total ranged penalties reduced by +10. Characters not from the Tsuruchi Family who carry this weapon must either have an Obligation to the Tsuruchi Family or risk being hunted down and killed from a blood feud.
  • Writing up an in character summary for a module is worth 1 xp.

New houserules may need to be written, but mostly they're going to be minor things I think (such as the Tengoku's Justice path dropping down to 1.5 honor starting...).

Additionally, I'm going to weigh in on the following:

Base Ronin paths from Enemies of the Empire should be fine, Kolat and other specialized ones are by permission only, and probably will be 'no'

Kata and Kiho are allowed, Courtiers get the -1 cost for their advantages as a balancer (from the sidebar), this stacks with any other discount given to them (including the base reduction for courtier for some, such as Read Lips), but cannot reduce the cost below 1.

Edit: Oh yes, and allow Honor rolls.

Do we want to include any kind of weapon quality system? we have a smith and 1 fine weapon already. I'd be fine with a 2/4/6 fine/excellent/legendary bonus or something else I just can't think of anything cool right now.

As in +2/+4/+6? I think that would be a decent temporary stop-gap, though I assume with enough effort, a smith could produce one of the sacred weapons (or something with the same bonuses).

Alternatively, I might browse the homebrew forum at some point to see about ideas there.
