[1E] Faerie Folk Character Creation: Starting Attributes

If Nobles start with 3 dots in all Attributes before adding 10/7/4, and Commoners start with 0 dots in all Attributes before adding 10/7/4, then why does the character sheet at the back of the book have the first dot inked-in already?  Shouldn't all the Attribute dots be empty?

The advantage for Nobles is pretty severe, since in terms of the other Exalted they're really getting 12/9/6 to assign to their attributes, which seems more than a bit excessive.  Does anyone else think so?

Well, the other Exalted have never been equal to begin with, so, unless you're attempting a mixed game like CW, that really shouldn't be much of a problem.

Raksha have a low Essence cap, and a lot of their Charms are shaping-based.  Ergo, while they may be overpowered in the Wyld, this is not so in Creation.

It seems this way until you play one. Raksha are weird in that their abilities have an inverse relation to how cool their opponent is. More here and here.

And, three in each attribute gives a bonus of 6 dots to each category.

That plus 10/7/4 is actually 16/13/10.

I wasn't thinking of character type balance.

I was thinking of inappropriate character type selection by players based on too little or superficial information.

------------------------------------------------------------

The group I am about to start for has almost 0 Exalted experience.

In order to help my players understand what is available to chose from, I have created a comparison chart listing all the summary character creation infomration for each character type.

The Faerie Folk, especially the Nobles and the Enlightened Mountain Folk look awfully superior in many ways when the bare stats are looked at in this manner.

I've already said no to the Autocthonians, and given my groups tendencies to go after what anybody says no to, I hesitate to just ban them outright.

------------------------------------------------------------

Hanat-Osul and wordman,

Thank you for the information.  That is exactly what I needed to know.

------------------------------------------------------------

Ker'ion

Obviously my math-fu is non-functional at the moment.

------------------------------------------------------------

Does this seem like I'm going into this knowing a little less than I should?

Well, yes, and they all know that.

The two other group members who have been GMing have done so for so long that they are almost completely burned to a cinder.  They practically jumped on top of me in thanks when I told them I would be running.

Tomorrow is character creation.  I'll have two more weeks of reading and NPC/episode creation ahead of that.  The stories and overall epic are already set up.

In order to keep them from freezing on trying to decide upon the vast lists of unfamiliar charms, backgrounds, etc., I've let them all know that I will allow total character rebuilds as of a certain point in the story.  This doesn't help story continuity much, but will keep them away from the non-decision syndrome (exam: 1: Hey, where do you want to eat?  2: I don't know, what about you? 3: Me, I don't care, what about you?   4: I am indifferent.).  Old and somewhat jaded gamers can be difficult at times.

If they have almost no Exalted experience, start off with Solars. They're the easiest, they only need the core book (which will encourage the players to buy one for themselves), and they can grow into a more complex campaign as their experience grows. I've kaiboshed siddies, fair folk, and the autobots as character choices in my games for now, as even I don't fully understand them.

Personally... go solars... or go Alchemicals...

Solars can be set up relatively easy, while alchemicals, give the PCs support, and a world that they are venturing into for the very first time...

Well, Fair Folk get really handicaped when it comes to magical conflict with the Exalted.  The way they make up for it is ungodly Attributes and Abilities.

minmaxed Fair Folk can get combat pools nearly as high as minmaxed  charm using Solars.

I say go Heroic Mortal first, let them understand the system and power level involved, and then after a game or two let them all Exalt either as what they want to be or what their characters seem to be.
