the scholarship kid
mack.
Mackenzie hadn't really slept very well last night.

Normally, she wouldn't let anything get in the way of a good night's rest because if she did, then it affected her ability to stay focused in class, and that wasn't something she could afford to risk. Especially not since she was given a scholarship to one of the best private schools in the country. Graduating from Glendale Prep would do wonders for her future, especially if she received a scholarship while she was there, and the only way she could achieve that was by striving for excellence.

Unfortunately, the environment wasn't exactly one someone like her could easily thrive in. Yes, there was competition, but it was in no way friendly. In fact, so far, since she joined Glendale Prep two days ago, Mack hadn't made a single friend. It was clear she didn't belong. She stuck out like a sore thumb, even though they all wore the same uniform. It was already news that she was here on a scholarship, and not because her mother owned her own clothing line, or her father owned a few several businesses. There wasn't really anyone here who came from the kind of background she did, and it was lonely.

And if that didn't make matters worse, she may or may not have caught the school's most popular guy buying drugs in the locker room just yesterday.

Mack wished she hadn't walked in on that. She wished that she just left the swimming pool without running into anyone, but no, she had to stick around and investigate the hushed voices only to witness Rory Myles exchanging money for some pills. Now, Mack didn't know anything about drugs, but she doubted Rory was buying vitamins on the down low when you could get those over the counter at any pharmacy without being given a second glance. She witnessed something she shouldn't have, and she got caught doing it too.

Mack couldn't get out of there fast enough, but all it did was fill her with dread because she had to return to school and see Rory's face again, considering they shared some classes. She'd been trying to keep a low profile all morning, but the anxiety from it all was eating her up. She could deal with feeling out of place. She did not want something to risk her position in this school, and given how popular Rory was, she was sure he could say something to the wrong person and have her thrown out, just to protect his reputation.

Mack tried not to think about it as she walked into Biology that morning. So far, she hadn't had Biology class, which meant that she'd be assigned a partner for the year today. For her sake, she hoped it was someone who didn't talk too much. Nobody would sit next to her voluntarily, that was for sure, but she didn't mind who she was stuck with as long as it didn't affect her grade in the long run. That was what mattered.

And Mack tried to focus on that while she waited for the class to fill up. She was momentarily zoned out, skimming through her text book for the syllabus, so she was kind of blind to anyone and everyone who entered the room for the next couple of minutes.

With his shoulder pressed into his locker, Rory's gaze watched the petite blonde as she made her way into the biology lab. "Rory, are you even listening to me?" Sabrina, his ex, continued to speak as she stood directly in front of the tall brunette. Rory moved his gaze down to the girl before him before he pushed himself off of his locker. "Brina, I honestly don't have time for this." He spoke quickly before moving past the rather annoyed blonde to the biology lab. After the whole fiasco of the new scholarship kid yesterday in the locker room, Rory knew that he had to keep her quiet and he only knew one way to do that: to date her---well pretend to.

"Bro, everything is set up for you."

The arm now across the room door caused Rory to halt in his steps, his head tilting downward slightly to get a better view at his best friend Matt. As soon as Rory had left the locker room last night he had gone straight to Matt who had known about his insomnia issue, hence why he had gotten the bag of pills. In everyone's eyes Rory was the perfect being. Handsome, Athletic, Ambitious, Charming. No one could know he had a flaw no matter how minuscule it was. "You're going to have to keep Sabrina in check. She's been following me around all day." Rory sighed softly before moving fully into the classroom with Matt in tow.

The brunette moved swiftly through the rows of desks before he placed his notebook on top of the desk where Mack sat. "You are the only one who reads that you know.", his words were soft as they passed through his lips as he mentioned towards the syllabus. Rory gently slid himself in the empty chair beside the blonde, his hands pressing flat against the cool desk. "It's Mack, right?" Lifting his head slightly to get a better angle towards the girl he allowed his lips to turn up into a smile. "We got off on the wrong foot yesterday. I'm Rory." And so it begins.

Since Mack was pretty involved with her book, she didn't really look up when she realised that someone had approached her table. It was only when she heard a voice speaking and directing his words at her, that she realised she was being addressed. Before looking up, she made out that the voice sounded vaguely familiar, but she was still very surprised to look up and meet the gaze of Rory Myles.

"I... What?" Mack had heard his question, loud and clear. She was just busy trying to comprehend this situation. Rory Myles was standing by her desk and actually making conversation with her. Given what had happened the previous day, she assumed she'd only come face to face with him if he wanted to tell her off or make it clear that she had no more future at this school. Instead he was commenting on her reading habits like they were friends?

If that wasn't surprising enough, Rory soon slid into the seat beside her, even when there were several other seats in the room that were available. A certain blonde glared daggers at them, and Mack couldn't fully understand why but she assumed it had something to do with Rory's sudden interest in her. Naturally, she assumed the worst. Was this all a distraction? Was she going to walk out of the classroom only to be doused in pigs blood from above, a la Carrie?

All those ideas would make more sense than him actually wanting to befriend her. He hadn't seemed as friendly when she walked in on him buying some pills.

"Right," Mack slowly nodded when he got her name right. "I know who you are." Everyone in the school knew who he was. He didn't really need any kind of introduction, but he was being polite by getting the formalities out of the way. Why?

"If by 'got off on the wrong foot' you mean that I walked in on you doing something you weren't supposed to be doing, then yes. We did," Mack slowly shut her book and focused on him. She had her guard up because she couldn't just believe that this was all a coincidence. There had to be some kind of ulterior motive.

Just then, their professor walked in and set his things down on his desk. She quickly realised that once he started roll call, these seating assignments would be cemented for the rest of the year. Would Rory really risk all that for something he was up to? It made Mack wonder, and suddenly she was confused, curious, and anxious. She didn't want to believe that he was here to just be welcoming, but there seemed to be no sign so far to tell her that he had any malicious intentions.

"If he sees you sitting here you'll be stuck as my lab partner for the rest of the year," Mack added on, nodding toward their Biology professor briefly. She assumed that wasn't something Rory wanted.

But then again, there was clearly a lot she had yet to find out.

[/div][/div] [div class=textcontainer][div class=text] From the bewildered look that Mack had shot Rory's way, he wasn't exactly sure if it was a positive or negative reaction. The brunette's right eyebrow rose curiously as the girl beside him collected her thoughts. Any normal human being would have had to take a moment to process what had just happened. Mack had seen a very different side of him last night, one that was rash and easily triggered compared to the sweet disposition he was playing at the moment. It was almost like whiplash.

Rory couldn't contain the smirk forming on the right side of his face as she mentioned knowing who he was. Everyone in the school knew who he was, hell most people in the town knew who he was so it didn't come as a surprise. "I think that you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.", he waved off the subject as he pressed his back against the chair until he was tipping slightly back. To his surprise, Mack had no problem arguing back with him and it was almost refreshing to not have someone just cave in right away. It just made this scenario more interesting.

Before he had time to respond to Mack's declaration of being stuck as her lab partner, professor Munich had spoken, "Mr. Myles, are you changing your seat?" With his eyes locked onto Mack's own the male grinned, "I'm going to be Mack's partner for the year." His voice came out clear and confident as he moved his gaze from her own to the rather shocked looking professor.

"Have you lost your mind Rory?!"

The shrill voice of Sabrina pierced through his ear drums, a sigh passing through his lips as he pressed his right hand to his face for a moment. The only obstacle that he was going to have to move through would be Sabrina which shouldn't even be an obstacle since she was the one who broke up with him.

Choosing to ignore the other girl, Rory turned his attention back to Mack. "If we have to dissect anything, I am giving you free reign on taking over." The brunette turned his attention back to the front where professor Munich was handing out packets to each pair of partners. Rory nodded at the professor before taking the packet from his hands, placing it on top of the table between himself and Mack.

He eyed the front of the packet for a moment before leaning his elbows against the table. "For our first project, should we go to my place or yours?"

Mack arched an eyebrow when Rory went on to explain โ€” on her behalf โ€” that she'd been at the wrong place, at the wrong time. This was completely factual, of course, but she didn't think he'd be so accepting of that, given the way things went down yesterday. Had he just needed some time to think it over? That seemed like the best case scenario, but Mack didn't want to be too optimistic. Things in this school hadn't gone well for her in the past two days โ€” why would that all turn upside down now?

Mr. Munich seemed to notice that it was uncharacteristic of Rory to be sitting next to her โ€” or perhaps, for him to be sitting somewhere different, and not next to his usual friends. he was unsure about this decision so much that he even approached the bench to clarify it with Rory.

Great. Mack wanted to hide in her shirt like a turtle. She hated attention, and this was the worst kind, given that she'd only just started attending this school two days ago. All eyes were unfortunately on her and Rory at the moment, since this entire event seemed unusual, and surprising. Rory may be used to the gazes, but Mack certainly wasn't. She was fine with being ignored and having people treat her as if she was invisible. There was less drama that way, and she could focus on what was important โ€” her education.

Mack's state of shock was further alleviated when Rory โ€” while maintaining eye contact โ€” announced that he was going to be her lab partner for the year. He was serious about this. So maybe it wasn't all a trick? It was hard for her to tell. She didn't like how uneasy she felt by all of this, but at the same time... what was it about Rory Myles that made him so damn hard to resist? She might have barely batted an eyelid at him, in any other scenario, but he was making that hard by taking the initiative to be friendly.

Mack briefly turned around to locate the source of the protesting shriek and she recognised the blonde that had been glaring at them not long ago. Must be one of his many admirers. Or maybe a girlfriend? An ex-girlfriend? Why did it matter anyway?

She blinked a couple of times and completely ignored the talk about dissection. "I think I have the same question as your friend over there," Mack nodded to a fuming Sabrina. She didn't elaborate on it though, because she was sure he'd understand what she meant. Why was a guy like him wasting his time with someone like her? They clearly came from two different worlds, and he knew it. Hell, everyone knew it. None of them could really cover up their surprised expressions.

She decided to just accept the fact that they were year-long partners now. She was stuck with him whether she liked it or not, but more than being upset by it, she was just still so damn confused. And curious. May as well steer into it. For now.

"Okay, I guess this is happening," Mack muttered under her breath. "How about a more public setting for the first few times?" She suggested, deciding to go along with it for now. If there was something else at play then she'd find out soon enough, surely. She wasn't going to let him distract her from her main goals โ€” no matter how he made her feel.

"The park? Or a cafe?" Mack mainly just didn't want him coming to her place. Her brother and father would hate him and everything he stood for and she would just feel like an outsider at his place. "You can pick a place," she explained, avoiding eye contact and instead inspecting the pack left on their desk by Mr. Munich.

This was going to be an interesting school year for sure.

[/div][/div] [div class=textcontainer][div class=text] The attention that had been drawn to Mack and himself from his little statement of changing his seat didn't seem to phase him. Mack had been thrown off by this statement that she had even agreed to Sabrina's statement about losing his god damn mind. The real question was: Did Rory lose his mind? Everyone was about to find out.

Rory's green eyes locked onto Mack's own for another second as he waited for her response. She seemed frazzled in a sense, almost hesitant. "Public setting, okay." He chuckled softly before grabbing the stray pen behind his ear. "There's this little cafe that I go to all the time." Rory turned his gaze to his notebook as he scribbled down an address and his phone number.

The paper tore easily out from the notebook, his grip lightening on the sheet before he placed it on top of the packet. "It's called The Beanery.", his eyes moved back to her own as he placed the pen back behind his ear, "I have practice after school but I can meet you there right after?" The sound of the bell caused the hair on the back of his neck to raise slightly. No matter how many times it went off during the day, it never seemed to be expected.

Standing up from the chair, Rory grabbed the notebook from the table and placed it under his arm. "Alright Mack Attack, I'll see you later.", he winked quickly before turning on his heel to leave the bio lab.

Mack's gaze left the pack she had in her hand, traveling toward Rory's notebook as he began to scribble down an address and his number. They were burned into her memory almost immediately, so she didn't really need the paper, but she took it from him anyway, when he handed it to her. She looked it over once more before folding it and then looking back up as the bell sounded, signalling the end of first period.

Mack's gaze travelled back to Rory as he took his leave, coining a nickname for her as he did so โ€” one she wasn't so sure she was fond of, but she didn't even have much time to process it, let alone protest. "Uh, yeah, okay," she mumbled a response and watched him leave. Other students slowly left as well, and another bunch of students were trickling in, but Mack remained seated. She just needed a moment to process all of this, and the fact that she was going to be meeting Rory Myles outside of school.

What was worse? She had been to The Beanery before. Several times, in fact, because her best friend Isaac worked there. And boy did she have a story to tell him.

Mack was brought back to reality when someone came up and said she was in their space so she hastily grabbed her things and rushed out to head to her next class before the next bell rang and she'd be locked out. Mack was never late to class, but a lot of unusual things were happening today, so would it really be the most shocking thing ever? No, it wouldn't.

The rest of Mackenzie's day went by in a blur. She tried to stay focused but could only keep thinking about how later, she was going to be seeing Rory. She also kept wondering if this was all a dream that she was about to wake up from, but she had clumsily walked into at least three open lockers and she had successfully stubbed her toe against a desk so she knew she wasn't dreaming because she still felt the throbbing.

Eventually, the day came to an end. Mack had an estimate of how long Rory would take during practise, given what time she'd walked in on him the previous day, so she knew she had some time to do a few laps of the swimming pool. Once she was done, she changed into something more comfortable than her school uniform and then made her way to The Beanery on foot. Despite working in her dad's garage, she didn't have a car. She knew everything about cars, but she just couldn't afford one for the time being, and she didn't want to rely on her brother to get around. Besides, she enjoyed walking.

Mack reached the cafe soon enough, and Isaac was there, behind the counter, to greet her. The place fortunately wasn't very crowded just yet, so Mack could walk right up to the front, not needing to wait in a line.

"How was your third day at Snooty School?" Isaac asked, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the counter.

"It was... weird. Especially after yesterday," Mack explained, but she didn't have much time to get into detail. Rory would probably be arriving soon. "How's your school?"

Isaac, like Mack, had been displaced as well since their school caved in on itself. He had unfortunately been transferred to a public school that was on the outskirts of town, which meant much more travelling. "Let's just say that I'm glad this place isn't too busy today because if I have to walk more, my legs will turn to jelly."

Chuckling, Mack ordered her usual โ€” black coffee with extra sugar โ€” before finding an empty, and slightly secluded table to sit down at. She knew that the moment Isaac spotted Rory walking in he'd have several questions, but it would all have to wait until later, because quite frankly, Mack had a few unanswered questions herself.

[/div][/div] [div class=textcontainer][div class=text] Something or someone was against him today.

The brunette took in another deep breathe as he tried to replace air back into his lungs. His coach had really dragged him hard today, which normally wasn't unusual but today it seemed to be extreme. At least he ended practice with a few laps in the pool or else he would have been heading into the cafe dripping with sweat instead of pool water.

Rory cleared his throat as his heart beat calmed and steadied, his right hand holding the strap to his backpack around his shoulder. It was actually a relief when Mack had said that she wanted to meet somewhere private. He was in no mood to have to bring her back to his shit show of a family and he wasn't exactly sure if he would mix in well with her own. The Beanery was the perfect place.

Left hand on the door handle, Rory made his way into the cafe slowly. His green eyes scanned over the area before they locked onto Mack in the secluded spot. She hadn't run yet so that was always a promising sign. "You look different.", he spoke smoothly as he placed the backpack on top of the table before sliding into the chair directly across from Mack. "Nice, is more the word I am looking for." Rory rose his eyebrows slightly as he leaned his still slightly damp back into the chair. The Glendale Prep uniform barely made him look flattering never mind anyone else. He much rather see Mack in her own clothing.

Running his hands through his damp hair, Rory slicked it back so it was out of his face before he rose again from the table. "Alright, for me to focus I need some snacks and a drink." Green eyes moved to the black coffee before going back to Mack's face. "I'll be right back." Nodding once, Rory moved away from the table to the front of the cafe where the male barista was behind.

"Hey man." Rory's voice was firm while he pressed his elbows against the smooth countertop to steady his aching body. "Can I get a hot chocolate and some of those cookies?" He tilted his head in the direction of the small platter of cookies before standing up tall once again to reach into his pocket to grab his wallet. "Oh, and if that girl over there..." his eyes traveled to Mack before moving back to the barista's, "...get's anything else please put it on a tab for me. I will pay for it when we are done."

Mack was busy reading a book when Rory came. Not for the first time that day, he surprised her with his presence at a table she was sitting at alone. It was becoming a habit, apparently.

His voice reached her first, causing her to look up. She narrowed her eyes slightly, trying to recall what he'd been saying. "What?" It registered in her head soon after she asked the question, and he followed it up by clarifying what he meant. Nice. She supposed this was the first time he was seeing her in clothes other than her school uniform, but it wasn't the first time she was seeing him outside his school uniform.

It was however the first time she noticed how he looked outside of his uniform. His hair was damp, likely from a trip to the pool, or perhaps a shower after practise. His sweats clung to his frame, outlining just how... athletic he was. It was because she was so distracted that she couldn't come up with something to say in response to his compliment. Well, that, and she didn't actually know what to say. Those words weren't ones she ever expected to hear leaving Rory's mouth, while directed at her.

Mack was about to launch into the details of their first assignment but before she got the chance, Rory announced that he was going to go get himself a drink and some snacks. Mack nodded. "Alright." She realised once he got up that he'd be interacting with Isaac, who no doubt already noticed him coming and sitting down with Mack, which meant he already had a ton of questions. Her blue eyes travelled toward the counter as Rory came to a stop in front of it.

She couldn't hear anything being said, but Isaac was nodding along with whatever Rory said and he spared Mack a brief glance which to her, either meant he was trying to say something with his eyes, or Rory mentioned her for some reason or the other. When Rory also turned to look, she could confirm that it was the latter. Mack was just glad that Isaac was her friend, which meant her wanting to find out what was said in the moment wouldn't be weird.

"Sure," Isaac told Rory with a nod and a smile that was presented solely for formalities and not because he actually wanted to be friendly. Because Isaac hadn't been living under a rock for the past few years, he knew who Rory was, at least vaguely, and he definitely knew who his father was. "You can take a seat and I'll bring it to your table when it's ready," he offered, gesturing back to the table where Mack sat.

Mackenzie was busy putting her things aside so she could bring out her notebook and jot down whatever details they discussed. She waited for Rory to return before launching into a discussion, reminding herself that this wasn't some kind of social call. This was strictly school work.

"So, our first assignment is pretty easy," she said, pushing a booklet in his direction. "We just have to fill that up by the end of the week, based on what's taught in class. It's mostly diagrams that need to be labelled and a few fill in the blanks. Pretty standard stuff. In fact, I don't think we even need to meet very often to finish it up." Mack was more or less giving him an out. She'd even just write the answers down on her own and give him half the credit for it, if he wanted it that way. Mack just didn't want anything to jeopardise her position at this school.

[/div][/div] [div class=textcontainer][div class=text] It was becoming apparent that his charm wasn't going to win Mack over completely. Sure, it was strange because well---usually girls dropped to their knees to even get a second with Rory. Mack on the other hand, narrowed her eyes and questioned every motive. It was the first time a girl besides his awful step-sister hadn't instantly wanted to be with him. Not that Mack would ever actually be with him. Rory just needed to get her close enough to him so he could crush her.

He pushed himself away from the counter as Isaac had mentioned bringing over the items he had purchased. Rory moved slowly over to the table where Mack sat before slipping back into his seat. "Okay, snacks are on the way." Rory's eyebrows raised slightly at his statement before he leaned his elbows against the table top to get a better look at the packet Mack was pushing his way.

Mack was apparently wasting no time, almost as if she wanted to go over the packet and get the hell out of there. This whole thing was throwing Rory through a loop. His green eyes moved to the packet as the girl said the instructions, his gaze moving back to her own right before she finished her lecture. "Well...lucky for you I completely suck at science." The corners of his lips turned up slightly as he lifted his right hand up to cup the side of his face. "Wether you like it or not you're stuck with me for a year. We should make the best of it."

Rory dropped his hand, moving both of them into his lap as he pressed his back into the chair once again. "Are you always so...", the brunette paused for a moment to find the right word to use, "..uptight?" His brown hair fell slightly in his face as he eyed the blonde across from him. "From what I've seen so far you're all school and no play."

Mack looked ahead at Rory as he took in whatever she said, only to announce that he more or less sucked with science, which meant that they'd be spending more time together than she expected. Alright. No problem. After all, it was just studying. Provided he listened to everything she said, they shouldn't have any problems.

That was already proving to be hard though, because as Rory leaned back in his seat and spoke again, she arched an eyebrow. "Uptight?" She echoed, resting her elbows on the table and leaning forward just a little. "Well, for starters, you've only seen me for like... three days. Maybe not even the full three, given that the first time you even acknowledged my presence was yesterday in the locker room."

Mack was wondering if she should have brought that up. Why remind him, when he was clearly trying to forget it? At least, that's what she thought he was trying to do. She couldn't tell for sure what his game was. It just was all new to her, and she didn't like the way he made her feel because she'd never really felt it before.

"And secondly," Mack continued, not wanting to pause for too long, "we've only met at school, not counting right now. School isn't meant to be 'play'," Mack shrugged and leaned back in her chair. "Plus, I can be fun outside of school."

Okay, maybe she was trying hard to defend herself, because even outside school, she spent a majority of her time completing future assignments and keeping up to date with her syllabus.

'Fun' for her was making sure she was well ahead of the class, because that was a competition in itself. She realised though that she had never actually had a chance to hit parties or anything like that because she assumed she wouldn't enjoy them. The most she did was go to the movies with her brother, or hang out with Isaac.

Speaking of which, Isaac came over to deliver Rory's drink and a plate of cookies. He shot Mack a look, which she returned with a glare that sent him right back to the counter.

[/div][/div] [div class=textcontainer][div class=text] Mack didn't know how to have fun and it was blatantly obvious by her reaction to his question.

Rory couldn't push down the corners of his lips rising as he let out a laugh as she argued his point. Sure, Mack had a point saying that he had only met her for a total of three days and one of those days he didn't even want to remember that he met her. His eyebrow rose as she continued her rant and he couldn't help but admire the way she looked when she was riled up. "Mhm, it's a big school and I don't get a lot of free time to go looking for new kids." He eyed Isaac as his order was brought to the table.

Watching the small glances being sent back and forth between the barista and Mack was interesting enough. Rory took hold of one of the cookies before placing it partially in his mouth so he could take a bite. The two must know each other or maybe the barista had taken an interest in Mack? "What do you do for fun?", he asked quickly before turning his attention back to the still irritated blonde.

Mack was the scholarship kid and if Rory could have guessed of what her idea of 'fun' would be is reading a book or studying for an exam. Hell, she probably had her whole life mapped out and she wasn't even eighteen.

"Myles!"

The shout from the front of the cafe caused Rory to flinch slightly before his head snapped in the direction of the voice. Matt stood there with his arms open wide holding the cafe doors open. The brunette groaned softly at Matt's dramatic entrance, his head shaking slightly as the other male headed in their direction. "Er--and Mack!" Matt grinned widely as he pulled a seat from a nearby table, his legs moving to either side as he straddled the chair backwards.

"Josie is throwing a party tonight." Rory took another bite of the cookie before placing it back on the plate, his hands pressing flat against the table before he rose to his feet. "Alright Mack, time for you to show me you have fun." He extended his hand towards the girl across from him, a soft smile playing on his face as he locked his gaze with her own.

Mack was a little thrown off by the question. She didn't really think the topic would be taken any further, though in hindsight, she should have expected it. It was a much more interesting topic than Biology for him, surely. He already said he sucked at Science so that made sense, but being put on the spot was only good for Mack in a classroom. She could answer any of those questions that came her way. But what she did for fun? Suddenly she couldn't remember anything.

"I read," she replied with a shrug, saying the first thing that came to her mind. She realised though, that he may not classify that as 'fun'. "Books can be a lot of fun," she added, as if to justify her primary hobby. "I also like to swim," she added on, choosing a more sporty event, feeling like that was something Rory would relate to more.

She didn't understand why she was trying so hard to answer him properly. She'd never really worried about her habits in the past. She enjoyed what she did. Sure, maybe she could use a break every now and then but Mack had never really considered that, given her busy schedule and her ambition to be the best in all her classes so she could get the scholarship she deserved.

Before Mack could elaborate or list off more things, a voice calling out to Rory made her look up. She recognised the guy โ€” Matt, she recalled his name from hearing it in passing. She was aware that he was a close friend of Rory's, which meant he was just another person Mack likely wouldn't get along with. She let out a small sigh and looked down at her books, already beginning to close them and stow them away in her backpack. If Rory's friend was here, she doubted they were going to do much studying.

Mack was only vaguely listening to what he was saying. He addressed her, and she gave him a half-hearted smile in return before focusing on packing her bag. The mention of a party didn't go completely unnoticed, but what really caught her attention was Rory standing up and holding a hand out in her direction.

Her gaze shifted between his gaze and his outstretched hand. "What?" She was saying that a lot today, apparently. Her hand lifted, but she hesitated, not quite taking his hand because she was confused โ€” but above all, curious. "You're not talking about the party, are you?" Mack was already out of place at school, but at least she was in her element with classes and she had something she could excel at. She would definitely be out of place at a party.

[/div][/div] [div class=textcontainer][div class=text] Books were someones way of getting away from reality. Was she trying to run from something? Rory stared at the blonde for another moment as he tried to understand what her definition of fun really was. All he could imagine was her sitting in her bedroom reading books all day. Diving into them as if they were a lifeline. Maybe she wished to be someone else?

Rory turned his gaze back to Matt who was sitting now in between the two waiting patiently for their answer about Josie's party. Josie was the head cheerleader in the school and also happened to be Sabrina's best friend. His hand stayed in position as he turned his gaze back to Mack who had already packed up her bag to leave. His eyebrow rose as she spoke and he couldn't help but notice the hesitation in her hand. So he was making an impact on her.

"Listen dandelion, just one hour. I can drive, you can hang out with me the whole time.", his words came out soft yet firm as if it was a pact to keep her close so she wouldn't be engulfed into the mass of people. "You're new here, it will be good for you to see what this school is about." Rory turned to look at Matt who was now putting the chair he was sitting at back at the table beside their own. "Alright! I'll see you guys there! It's going to be dope."

Matt took off out of the cafe, leaving Rory shaking his head yet again. The male was a great friend but he was an idiot. Rory turned his gaze back to Mack before reaching his hand out to grab softly onto hers. "Trust me."

He was definitely talking about the party.

Mack should have known that sooner, or maybe she should have taken Matt's arrival as a sign to leave, so she wasn't roped into this whole thing, but right now the situation became a little trickier.

Rory used yet another nickname that Mack wanted to protest to, but didn't get the time for because he continued speaking, talking about how she would benefit from this, given that she was the new girl in school. The new girl who was completely out of place.

Before Mack even replied, Matt assumed it was a yes from her end and took his leave, clearly excited about any opportunity to party. "Iโ€”" She would have protested, to say that she hadn't made her decision yet, but once again, she didn't get the chance. Mack realised she didn't get a lot of chances to get her word in when she was with Rory. Why was it so hard to just say no? Maybe it was to do with the fact that Rory had just reached out to take her hand.

Mack knew parties were not her scene. She also knew that Rory was probably the last person she should trust, but aside from what she walked in on yesterday, he hadn't really given her a reason to not trust him. Maybe she mistook what she saw. Maybe she was just looking at it the wrong way. Maybe he actually had friendly intentions.

It was a lot of maybes, but Mack was also realising that she was seventeen, nearly at college, and she had wasted her life on her education. She didn't regret it but maybe... just maybe, she should break out of her shell a little. It was worth a try, wasn't it?

Eventually, Mack let out a small sigh. "One hour," she agreed, after a long pause. "And if it isn't fun, then I'm leaving earlier," she added, laying down a few ground rules. Well, it looked like she was going to a party, and with Rory Myles, no less.

"We should probably pay first," Mack said, noticing that Isaac was coming over. His gaze was fixated on their hands, which Mack failed to realise were still in one another's grasps, but Isaac quickly averted his gaze.

"Uh, the bill's been taken care of," he informed Mack. "It's on your friend's tab." He said 'friend' as if it was a bad thing, and Mack knew she was going to be having a long conversation about this once she got home. For the time being though, Isaac just cleared up the table and left, so Mack nervously turned to face Rory and she gestured forward, beginning to walk out of the cafe.

"Well, you're driving," she reminded him. "Lead the way."

[/div][/div] [div class=textcontainer][div class=text] One hour.

It would only take one hour for Rory to show Mack how to lighten up. Sixty minutes. The challenge was easily accepted. Rory cocked his head to the side as Mack started for the doors to the cafe while reminding him that he was driving. Of course he was driving, he wasn't about to leave his baby parked outside on the street unattended.

Rory fell into the same rhythm of steps alongside Mack his hand outstretching to open the passenger side door of the large black Jeep. "I have to just change real quick." He eyed the blonde for a moment before moving to the back of the vehicle. Quickly he opened the back door, taking hold of some spare clothes that he kept lying around for occasions as such. "No peaking." Rory teased lightly, his fingers gripping the bottom of his shirt before swiftly pulling it up and over his head exposing his now bare chest.

Bringing Mack to a huge party thrown by one of the most popular girls in school could go one of two ways. One: she could have a lot of fun and relax her uptight personality. Two: she could absolutely hate it and never speak to him again. It was a chance Rory was willing to take. "Alright, no turning back now." The brunette slid into the drivers seat as he ignited the engine by turning the small key over.

The music coming from inside the overly large house was enough to deafen the already deaf but it came to no surprise for Rory. He quickly parked the Jeep before exiting the Jeep altogether. He moved quickly to the other side, opening the passenger door before Mack had a chance to do it herself. "Okay, let's go in before you change your mind."

Mack slid into the passenger's seat as Rory opened up the door for her, and she nodded when he said he needed to change. She wasn't sure where there was place to change out here, but it was admittedly easier for a guy to do it than for a girl to do it. Honestly, Mack was still just admiring the huge car Rory drove โ€” that is, until he moved to the back and told her not to look.

Of course, Mack's first instinct was to look, because she didn't realise he was going to change right there, but the shirt came off swiftly, and after a moment of lingering, Mack averted her gaze out of respect. She knew he probably teased and likely didn't care if she looked or not, but she wasn't about to let herself be distracted just before she was about to hit a party โ€” something she hadn't really done before.

Rory soon joined her up front and Mack put on her seatbelt, bracing herself for whatever was about to come at this party.

Mack heard the music before she saw the house. Her first instinct was to make a comment about how this was noise pollution but that certainly didn't make her out to be a 'fun' girl so she abstained from saying what was on her mind for the time being. The next thing she noticed was how large Josie's house was. She didn't expect any less, but Mack hadn't really been to this part of town except when she helped her mother during one of her jobs โ€” which she did as a cleaning lady.

As Rory parked the jeep, Mack unbuckled herself and opted to leave her bag on the floor of his car. Before she could open the door, Rory was already there, and against her better judgement, she offered him the smallest of smiles. "Thanks."

So far, so good. And she wasn't going to turn back before giving this a shot.

Upon entering the house, the music was even louder. There were several people, and the smell of alcohol was strong. Mack figured that Rory knew most, if not all of these people. She, on the other hand, knew none of them personally. Some fleeting faces were familiar from some classes but that was about it.

"What now?" Mack turned around to face Rory with a curious expression. She didn't know what to do at parties. She knew there was drinking and dancing involved but she didn't really indulge in either of those, unless there was maybe something non-alcoholic around.

For the time being, Mack was just glad that Rory was staying true to his word to keep her company, even if for just one hour.

Rory was almost positive that Mack was going to completely turn down the whole idea of going to a party. In fact, he thought she was going to storm out of the cafe altogether.

The brunette turned his gaze from the beer pong table to the blonde standing beside him, his eyebrows raising slightly as she spoke over the loud music. He was one hundred percent positive that once she walked through the door she would have booked it. Today was getting stranger and stranger by the second. "Well...", his gaze wandered to the drink table that was set up neatly in the far corner of the large room, "...now I get you a drink."

With a small smile, Rory held up his right index finger for a moment before heading straight to the drink table. He gazed over the selection of drinks, grabbing a bud light bottle for himself while pouring a cup of punch for Mack. She didn't exactly look like the beer type of girl, or the type that had ever drank in her life. Rory made his way back to Mack, holding out the small cup of the red punch for her to take before twisting off the cap to his own bottle.

"The funny thing about parties is you never really know what to do." Slowly, Rory pressed the rim of the bottle to his lips before taking a small sip of the cool liquid. He was anticipating the 'you shouldn't be drinking that we're underage' talk from Mack at any moment but thankfully Matt had nipped that in the bud.

"Aye! You guys made it!"

Rory's eyebrows rose as Matt moved in between the two, one arm slinging around Mack and Rory's shoulder. "Well, you're not driving home." Rory teased to his best friend who was now moving the pair deeper into the party. "Awe come on myles, you're a buzzkill." Matt groaned for a moment as he dropped his arms from either of their shoulders. Holding his hand out as Matt moved to the front of the pair, Rory sighed. "Keys." Muttering under his breath, Matt removed the keys from his pants pocket before placing them into Rory's outstretched hand.

"You brought her to my best friends party?" Sabrina's voice boomed over the loud music, her hands crossed angrily over her chest as she stood behind both Rory and Mack. The brunette turned on his heel until he was completely turned around to face Sabrina. "Sabrina, you broke up with me." Rory's voice was steady as he stared at the now pouting blonde. "It was a joke!" Sabrina retorted, her arms uncrossing from her chest as she took a hesitant step forward. "It wasn't funny." Rory turned away from the girl once again, his free hand taking hold of Mack's as he moved as far away from Sabrina as he possibly could.

Thankfully Rory knew Josie's house like the back of his hand. He had been there on numerous occasions and has been in almost every room. Rory opened the door to the indoor pool room, waiting for Mack to go inside before he shut the door behind him. "I'm sorry about that. Sabrina is...", he paused for a moment, "...kind of a bitch."

Mack raised an eyebrow when Rory announced that it was time she get a drink. She wanted to speak up and say that she didn't drink alcohol, but before she could, he was off. The drink table was a little further away, so she just waited where she was, wrapping her arms around herself a little consciously as she looked around at the several already intoxicated teenagers. She was pretty sure she spotted some of them even dabbling in drugs but fortunately she was forced to look away when Rory returned with a glass of punch for her, and a beer for himself.

So he knew she didn't drink. Or he assumed. Either way, she was grateful he wasn't forcing alcohol down her throat. She would not, however, comment on the fact that he was having a beer. Instead, she just guzzled down half of the punch in her glass, having felt a little thirsty. Of course, Mack was totally unaware that the punch was actually spiked, though she did think it tasted a little bitter. Oh well.

Mack could relate to what Rory said because she had no idea what to do, but Matt soon burst into the picture. Her eyes widened a little as he threw an arm around both her and Rory, steering them further into the heart of the house โ€” and consequently, the party โ€” so Mack just gripped her glass a little tighter to keep it from spilling. She was pleasantly surprised at the next interaction which ended in Matt handing his car keys over to Rory. So he wasn't a careless partier. That was a good sign, right? He was keeping his friend safe, even if his friend could be a bit loud and obnoxious. Mack chose to overlook that for the time being.

She wanted to turn to Rory and compliment him for being a good friend, but a familiar female voice cut through the air instead, making Mack shut her mouth instead. She turned slightly, as Rory did, to face Sabrina, and she did not look happy. Not knowing what to do with herself, since this was between Sabrina and Rory, she guzzled down the rest of her drink. She'd been starting to feel a little light headed, and assumed it was dehydration, so naturally, drinking more would help.

Mack had just set her empty plastic cup down on a nearby table when Rory grabbed her hand and tugged her away from there. She followed, though it took her a moment to catch up and keep along with his long strides. At this point, whatever was in the punch was finally getting to her head, so instead of berate Rory like she otherwise might have, Mack only giggled as he dragged her along to some other room.

She didn't notice where they were at first. She just walked inside and then turned to look at Rory when he spoke, apologising for Sabrina. "Yeah, she kind of is," Mack nodded in agreement, a smile on her face. Her eyes were half-lidded, but she felt oddly... light. And happy. And nice. The music from outside the room was faint, but still very much audible, and Mack actually began to move to it a little, letting her instincts take over โ€” the things you do when you're intoxicated.

"What did you ever see in her?" Mack asked, slowly swaying around the room. It was dimly lit, and Mack now noticed the large pool, and she sauntered closer to the edge of it. "You're a nice guy. I think you can do so much better," she added, reaching a hand out and gesturing for him to come toward her. Her muddled brain was telling Mack that she wanted to swim, and she wasn't going to do it alone.

Mack made it look like she had something important to say, but when he was within arms reach, she just grabbed his hand and jumped into the pool, pulling him along with her, a laugh escaping her lips before she went under. This was completely uncharacteristic for Mack but... well, all she really needed was a little liquid courage.

Or some spiked punch that she drank way too fast.

The faint sound of the giggle behind him was oddly familiar in a sense. Sabrina wasn't following and he was almost positive it had only been Mack and himself. Holy shit. Mack was....giggling? The brunette stared in awe at the blonde as she started to move slowly around the room. His eyes dropped to her hips instinctively, moving with them as they swayed to the lull of the music. What the hell was happening. "Uh, Mack...", his voice was almost inaudible as he took a step closer to the girl.

"Er..what?" Rory followed Mack's every move as if his body was taken over in a trance, his mouth becoming dry as she spoke. A nice guy? Clearly she didn't know him that well....and well if she ever knew about his actual intentions of befriending her she wouldn't be saying that. Green eyes dropped to her extended hand while his eyebrows moved closer to each other as he contemplated his next move.

Everything had changed in the matter of a second. Mack--who Rory thought was going to be a party killer ended up surprising the shit out of him. He took a step forward, extending his own hand out to hers as she had wanted. "Mack what are yo---"

The sound of her laugh filled his ears while his body fell forward. Rory's free hand moved out quickly until both of his hands were around Mack's waist and pulling her small body towards his own until their chests collided. He could taste the chlorine in the water as he resurfaced, his eyes blinking rapidly in an attempt to clear his brown locks from his vision. What the hell just happened?

With his hands still planted possessively on Mack's waist he could feel her erratic heartbeat fluttering against his own. He hadn't given her a beer so this unusual side of Mack was throwing him through a loop. Maybe she had too much sugar at the cafe? The punch. Fuck, the punch was spiked. He should have known that. No one at any of these parties could be trusted.

Mack didn't give much thought to her actions, given that she was (involuntarily) intoxicated. She paid no attention to Rory's confusion toward her behaviour because she was feeling something else entirely, something that distracted her from the reality of the situation โ€” and her decision making, apparently.

When Mack resurfaced, right along with Rory, she was laughing. For the time being, she didn't take notice of how close they were, or how his arms were wrapped around her waist. Perhaps sober Mack would have noticed it right away, blushed tremendously, and then done everything in her power to move away because this was all new for her.

However, intoxicated Mack steered into it. She first used her hands to push her hair away from her face before letting them rest on his shoulders. Faint music still surrounded them but Mack's ears tuned it all out in the moment, while she focused on Rory.

"And you didn't think I could be fun," she pointed out, a smirk on her face as she met Rory's gaze. At that point, Mack seemed to realise just how close their faces were, so she peeled away from his body, which had been pressed against her own, and she moved to the centre of the pool, beckoning for him to join her.

"Come on, Rory, it's a party," she teased, going under water and then coming out a second later to splash him. "Loosen up a little and swim with me."

Whenever Mack recovered from this high... well, if she remembered all of this, she might just be mortified at the way she was acting, because she never acted that way. All flirty and confident? That wasn't Mack on even a good day. Sure, when she got comfortable enough around a person she opened up more but this was a different kind of confidence than being sure that she'd ace a pop quiz.

And if she showed up home like this... oh lord, that would be the end of her, and her life in one of the best school's in the town. Already her father hated the idea of her attending a school with people she clearly didn't get along with. If he had any evidence that it was slowly changing her too, he'd pull her out in an instant and force her to return to public school, where she'd be receiving the same, crappy education as before.

Rory stared down at the blonde, his eyes moving with her fingers as they pushed the wet hair from her eyes before landing gently against his shoulders. His mouth was dry, not due to the mouthful of chlorine he had a moment ago but from the closeness of Mack's face to his own. She was speaking but Rory couldn't make out the words falling from her lips. Instead he was fixated on the way her mouth moved as she spoke. What the hell was wrong with him?

Within seconds her warmth was gone leaving Rory staring at the water pooling around him. He snapped his head in her direction, mouth agape slightly as she continued her taunts. Never in his eighteen years of living had a girl left him completely speechless. Not a single time.

He let the smile work its way onto his face before he moved deeper into the water until everything but his nose up with submerged underneath. He had to cool down, his brain was about to go into overdrive. The brunette took in a breathe before completely moving under the water, his arms and legs pushing outwards as he moved to the blondes side once again.

Rory surfaced, his hands yet again on the others waist as he blinked the water droplets from his eyelashes. "Who knew you could be fun?", he grinned widely as he hauled Mack up and out of the water and onto his shoulder. He moved to the steps of the pool, water pouring off of his clothed body as he exited the pool with Mack still in his grasp. He didn't need her drowning because she was tipsy.

His hands moved to Mack's waist, dragging her slowly from his shoulder down to his chest her body moving against his own the whole way down until her feet touched the ground. "You're soaking wet." His green eyes moved until they were locked onto her own, his hands moving to her face before gently pushing the wet hair behind either of her ears. "We need to get you some clothes."

Mack grinned a little wider when she spotted a smile slowly forming on Rory's face. Compared to the confusion on his face just moments ago, Mack considered it a win. She giggled a little when he went under, only to resurface right in front of her yet again, talking about how it was unusual for her to be this way. To be fun.

The truth was that Mack could be fun when she wanted to be. Parties just weren't her scene, especially in a setting where she didn't know or get along with anyone. This wasn't her usual crowd, and Rory definitely wasn't the type of guy to ever give her a second glance, yet he'd been nothing but nice and welcoming today. Perhaps that's what influenced her current actions.

When Rory picked her up and held her over his shoulder, she pouted. "Hey!" Her protest was not combined with any physical thrashing around though. She more or less let him carry her out of the pool, feeling the cool air hit her even harder since they were both drenched. "I wasn't done swimming," Mack murmured, sounding like a kid who lost their ice cream.

She said nothing, though, as he set her down in front of him. Once again, she was vaguely aware of how close their bodies were, and him lifting his hands to push her wet hair away from her face and behind her ears did not help with calming her increased heartbeat right now.

"I do need dry clothes," she nodded in agreement, her eyes momentarily flickering to his lips because of the thoughts that suddenly filled her mind. But because she was intoxicated, her mind didn't stop there.

Backing away, Mack reached for the hem of her red top, beginning to try and pull it over her head. She got about halfway there, while walking toward the door, intending to leave the pool room, when the shirt got stuck. Considering it was wet, and she was high on something, it became a difficult task.

"I'm sure someone will have some dry clothes outside," she called out to Rory nonetheless, her voice muffled by the fabric currently stuck around her face. Her hands struggled to get a better grip but she didn't stop walking toward the door.

Rory's voice dropped significantly as his gaze followed her every move. From her finger tips lightly brushing her toned torso to the red shirt she had been wearing pulled almost completely up and over her head. The brunette's gaze dropped to her almost bare chest, heat rushing to his cheeks as he contemplated his next move. He had to get her out of there but he also needed to get her into dry clothes.

He made his way over to the blonde, his hands moving to her own hands that were tugging on her shirt in an attempt to take it off. "I will get you clothes, I promise." Thankfully he always had plenty of clothes lying around the back of his Jeep due to having practice almost every day of the week. Rory moved until he was behind the girl, his hands completely covering her smaller ones as he began to lower her shirt back to where it needed to remain.

"Are you fucking kidding me?"

Sabrina. Rory cursed softly under his breathe as he completely lowered Mack's shirt until she was covered completely. She was going to have to deal with the wet clothes for another moment because he was going to have to deal with an extremely pissed off Sabrina. "Sabrina." His tone was low once again but not in the same sense as it had been earlier, it had a rasp to it. "Who would have known that she was such a sl--"

"Enough!" Rory's eyes locked onto the other girls, his right hand moving to grab Mack's free one before he ushered both himself and Mack out of the pool room. The last thing he needed was Sabrina to taunt Mack for doing something she hadn't even done. Maybe bringing her to a party was a bad idea especially when Sabrina was hot on his tail.

Once they had made it back out to Rory's Jeep, the male pulled open the latch to the back door so he could find something for them to wear. He grabbed a simple pair of jogging pants, a white t-shirt, and his letter jacket for Mack to put on. "Here, get in the backseat and change okay?" Rory held out the small pile of clothes, the small smile not leaving his lips as he waited for Mack to take the clothes.

He grabbed a pair of basketball shorts for himself, pulling the wet shirt off of his body and tossing it into the back of the Jeep. He didn't need a whole outfit, he just needed to get Mack home before anything else happened.
