Maybe they are the ones who set up a job with the B.D., or are forced to take refuge with them if (consider this) they are being targeted by a group, or have riled up the wrong beehive.

That would be... interesting to see. Aurox and Shadow would be like two peas in a pod: both struggle with their emotions in some sense; and both rely on drugs of a kind for their day-to-day lives.
I think either way would be interesting, but for the character arc it might be better to have them start doubting later on. Maybe Smoke is perceived as “compromised” and some killers are sent after them.
