    OPERATION​
    U N I C O R N​

    Euroky Low-Emission Infectious Disease (ELID). A disease that has been proven to be lethal, both to infected and non-infected. Developing a cure to this pandemic has proven to be excruciatingly difficult, with the infected having a tendency to mutate and go rabid.

    And with the severe lack of manpower worldwide, it is expected that this predicament will last longer than any other disease the world has ever known - perhaps even outlasting the last remnants of humankind itself.


    You, along with several others, were dispatched to work at a research facility, that has reported several instances of a breakthrough - signalling that a cure is finally within humanity's grasp.

    The question is, will it succeed? Or will it fail like many others before it?
    Operation: Unicorn is a Quest - a form of RP that focuses more on being interactive, as opposed to the usual collaborative aspect of other forms of RP.

    In the words of the Prefix Guide Thread - "Quests are a special type of RP in which the author writes most of the story, and provides options for the players to choose from along the way, similar to the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books."

    More details about what a quest is and how one works could be found in The Beginner's Guide to Questing.

    Operation: Unicorn takes place on a pre-established setting and will make use of the elements found in it, but this does not mean one has to know the setting in order to participate in the quest - as all terminologies and topics will be tackled and expanded upon as they are encountered in the story.

    Regardless of your knowledge in the mentioned pre-established setting, you can and are most certainly welcome to participate in the quest.

    Operation: Unicorn takes place in a dark future - 206X, where the third world war has brought upon devastating damage not only to the various nations that were part of it, but to the entirety of the earth as well.

    With the aftermath of the war still persisting to exist and torment the remaining inhabitants of the world, hope for a brighter future appears to be nothing but a fairy tale - a distant, fading dream that is soon to be forgotten.

    Haugen Enterprises is a company that, like many others, have made steady developments in the field of medical technology in the current era. While it is not renowned for anything, it has gained the attention of various organizations worldwide due to the recent events and news surrounding its constant "fruitful" research on the remnants of the third world war - specifically, trying to find a solution for the ever-growing problem known as Euroky Low-Emission Infectious Disease (ELID).

    ELID has been known to be lethal and highly transformative - often times causing the infected to mutate and go rabid, in many ways that one can imagine. With lack for a better term, the mutated infected have been called ELID as well. Not much is known about this plague besides it is obtained via exposure to a certain kind of radiation and the cruel future that it inevitably brings to those has been infected.

    A research facility, owned by Haugen Enterprises, in the southern tropics have frequently sent news of being in the midst of developing a cure to ELID, but such is yet to be confirmed by experts and respected authorities worldwide. Fearing the possibility of it being yet another disastrous failure, a private contractor has been hired to investigate the matter - which then sent a specialized team to head on-site to get a closer look on what exactly is occurring, and confirm whether these news are true or not.


    The team sent consists of eight units, each special and skilled in their own merit. While it is their first time working on a mission together, there is no mistaking that wherever they go, there will be a story to tell.

    They are human, yes. I don't want to start with an android as the protagonist yet since those are a bit more technical, with regards to the setting - we'll get to that topic sooner or later.

    Figured you'd probably want to tell the story from a human's perspective, but it never hurts to ask.

    Let me second Cornelius Wellington, then, or Cornelia Wellington if people prefer a female character - no personal preference in that regard.

    On the topic of voting, I'd like to let you all know about the new tallying feature implemented in favor of quests. Simply put, it's a way for the site to automatically tally votes in quests.

    How does it work / how does one use it?

    It's quite easy, one simply marks one of the present option by typing [X] option, and it will be automatically tallied. You can also type [X] username to vote for another user's choice.

    With that said, I don't really mind whether you use this new feature or not - since I highly doubt we'd get to a point where there'd be a number of votes that'd make it a pain to tally.

    You are Cornelius Wellington. You are the leader of this team - the one sent to investigate whether Haugen Industries is on truly on the verge of finding a cure or not. While you are not solely responsible for making this mission bear results, a heavy burden is still placed unto your hands - and that is making sure things do not escalate into a big mess, should complications occur. Though it is not part of your duties, you feel that, as the team leader, it falls upon you to keep this mishmash of a group doesn't cause itself to crumble and ensure the survival of its members.


    It's been four hours since all of you boarded the transport, and yet no one seems to be interested in establishing relations with each other. In fact, everyone appears to be in their own world, with a fair distance between one another and doing their own activities to pass the time before you finally reach the location. While that is understandable, since this is the first time you have all been grouped together, it would be better to get acquainted with each other now than later. It pays to be prepared, as many say.

    Since you've concluded that can't just force them to do what you want, as that gives off a bad impression as their leader, you've decided to take the initiative.

    You opened the briefcase containing the documents regarding the team members, thoroughly browsed them for a quick judge of character and capabilities, then picked one to start with.


    WHO DID YOU PICK?

    [] Martin Stevens - Seemingly average in all fields, though is noted to have the making of a decent cook. He has a rather clean record, with most of the reports about him telling of him boosting the morale of troops in difficult situations. The only problem with him, as it appears, is his tendency to not shut up when he starts talking.

    [] Ariel Altine - A fresh face who was scouted from a tech company in the west. Seems socially inept from the test results included in her document, though redeems herself with her rather impressive reputation as an informant. Could use a bit of help with regards to fieldwork-related skills, however.

    [] Ivan Zivkovic - A self-proclaimed demolitions specialist, who seems to be quite hard-headed. While his record is adorned with numerous successful missions, according to his files, it is often not in the manner that was expected or planned. Might have a loose screw in his head according to his test results.

    [] Kristia Lundgren - A mystery, with her files being heavily censored, especially her mission records. There isn't much to see in her document besides the fact that her kill count is thrice the amount that you expected, and her personnel test results are either left blank or rated with high regard.

    [] Hound - One of the latest developments in the field of doll technology. A model specialized for combat, specifically for guarding VIPs and trailing fugitives. This one seems to have a strange trait embedded onto it - usually playing checkers on its own and often restarting the match midway.

    [] Saturn - A service doll originally intended to bridge the gap between human-android relations, with the ability to speak and translate from one language to another, as well as store a large amount of information in its memory. This one seems to have been imprinted with an unhealthy liking for tea parties.

    [] Crown - A tactical doll excelling in digital warfare. Despite being an old model, it is able to compete with newer dolls in the same field of expertise. Accompanied by its decent fieldwork capabilities, it is a companion that has been recommended and passed down from one person to another. The only problem is the sassy mannerisms imprinted on it.

    I don't believe that she's the right choice for a great conversation, but she's important - plus, if we get our informant talking about the mission, that's probably something where everyone else can jump in at some point. So maybe just begin with a simple question that allows her to show that she knows her stuff without too much awkwardness?

    Intrigued by the mysteries enveloping her, you have decided to start with Kristia Lundgren. You returned all of the files you have acquired into the same briefcase, leaving only the ones that concern the selected individual. Grouping all the remaining papers together with a binder, you stood from your seat and began to walk - heading towards the area where Kristia Lundgren was seated.

    Once you got there, you immediately noticed that her attention was immediately turned to you.

    "Captain Wellington.", she nodded. However, her eyes caught a glimpse of the bound papers you were holding, and immediately commented on them. "I see. So that's why you're here."

    Noticing this, you took a deep breath. "That makes things easier, then.", you raised the bound papers, and placed them on the table between you and her. Shortly after, you took the seat opposite of hers, as you gazed straight at her without pause.

    The two of you locked eyes in this silent, but intimidating stare-down, neither parties willing to give in. Eventually, you shook your head and decided to promptly arrange the papers in a manner that both you and her can see and read the documents with ease and precision.

    "Of all the dossiers I've gotten, yours is the one that caught my intrigue.", you placed both of your hands on the table and returned your fixated gaze onto her. "Do you know why?"

    A slight trace of confusion and disappointment appeared on her, albeit only for a quick moment. It would seem that she expected something else from you - perhaps asking a more intelligent question, or something that had a less obvious answer. "My files have been heavily redacted?"

    You leaned in closer with a confident smirk. "Because your dossier tells me you're not here for the cure, but for something else entirely."

    Kristia kept her calm composure, but you had a feeling you hit the mark - simply because she tried to discreetly hold her breath for a second, and nearly failed at it.

    "Think about it.", you said as you tapped one document to another, as if telling a tale among the information hidden from those papers. "You've got a very prominent record in the field. Censorship in not only your personnel files, but on pretty much anything your name could be found on. And a sudden change of plans from the higher ups to include you in the roster."

    She opened her mouth, but could not utter words. As if her voice was put to a striking halt, she immediately closed her lips within the same moment.

    "So tell me.", you leaned in closer. "What exactly are you here for?"

    Keeping a calm face, she answered. "I'm afraid I can't tell you that."

    You slightly tilted your head. You knew she wouldn't tell you, but in any case, you might as well try. If your authority as this team's captain would affect her judgement, then this should bear fruit at the very least.

    "I see.", you reclined to the seat. "Who wanted you to be on this team?"

    "I can't tell you that either."

    After several exchanges between your inquiry and her unchanging answers, a bell pinged on the aircraft's speakers.

    "Team Leader, we require you at the cockpit.", the voice said.

    With a sigh you packed up the papers, and rose from your seat. Before you could leave to head to your destination, Kristia Lundgren spoke once more.

    "Captain Wellington. You may have your suspicions about me, but I assure you this - your orders as the team captain and the success of this mission is takes priority over whatever hidden agenda you may think I have."

    You gave her a curious gaze. "We'll see if that's true.", and then left for the cockpit.


    In the cockpit, you found the pilot talking with someone over the radio, as the co-pilot looked at him with concern. You have come to the realize that you were right before your destination - the island where Haugen Enterprises' research facility is located. The aircraft, however, was still in mid-air - it was hovering in a single spot, to be accurate.

    "What is it?", you asked.

    The co-pilot told you that apparently, you aren't being allowed to land the aircraft. The residents of the island have armed their anti-air defenses and are aiming for the aircraft - should any suspicious activity occur, you will most likely be shot down without warning.

    The pilot was having trouble trying to negotiate with whoever was on the radio, so you've decided to take it from him and do the talking yourself. You've gotten through a similar situation once, although it didn't really involve an aircraft - you should be able to get through this. Hopefully.

    "You know what, I'm done talking with you. Get me the one in charge, I'll talk to them!"

    "Hello, this is Cornelius Wellington. I am of the highest authority on this aircraft.", you responded. "What seems to be the problem here? Why are we not being permitted to land?"

    "This island is a private property owned by Haugen Enterprises. You need to go land somewhere else, or we'll be acting as our protocol dictates for unauthorized aircrafts."


    HOW WILL YOU RESPOND?

    [] Try to persuade them to give you permission. Your mission is backed by several government agencies, after all.

    [] Attempt to convince them that you have been sent by Haugen Enterprises. It's a bit of a gamble, but if it works, you should be able to reap a lot of benefits for the mission.

    [] Force them to make you land. You should have enough equipment on board to make a small isle into a ruin.

    [] Comply to their orders. You'll have to resort to a more covert means of entry, however.

    We've got this amazing team of experts, let's put their talent to a test - even if those hideous islanders allow us in, they'll only show us what they want us to see, and that's just not enough. Maybe ask for directions to the nearest safe place to land, just to act as if we weren't interested in their place itself - then ask our informant for the sneakiest way in.

    The pilot already tried persuasion, and that doesn't seem to be working. Convincing them that the organization sent for you seems too much of a risk, and force should be used as a last resort.

    "Ah, then we will be leaving at once. Apologies for the inconvenience.", you said.

    "As long as you understand."

    The island's anti-air defenses had removed the aircraft from its sights, and were slowly being retracted. You instructed the pilot and the co-pilot to depart the area. And though they are a bit confused, and a bit surprised at this, they still went through with your orders.

    As the aircraft's altitude was slowly rising, you gave them the signal to slowly halt but keep the vessel hovering at its current level. The ones on the island noticed this, and called you on the radio once more.

    "Why are you not leaving yet? We warned you-" The island's defenses slowly began to re-calibrate, with each anti-air turret gradually moving its sights onto where the aircraft was.

    "Yes, about that.", you answered. "Do you know of a nearby place we could land? We're running low on fuel and would like to get a refill."

    You hear silence from the radio, then eventually the noise of clacking, presumably from a keyboard. After a while, a ping could be faintly heard through the radio, which was then followed suit by the voice of the one you were talking to earlier.

    "Northwest of here is Makei Isle. There's a small town there which should get you through. I've sent the coordinates to you."

    The co-pilot confirms this, and you give him a thumbs up.

    "Thank you. We'll be leaving."

    The island's anti-air is once again, being retracted, as the aircraft continued its rise in altitude, and eventually flew out of the island's airspace. Once far enough from the island, you told the aircraft's crew to drop you and your team, along with all your equipment, on the island and continue as their protocol dictates.


    After an hour and a half, the aircraft has dropped you off on the island, along with your team and all the equipment. Once all has been confirmed to be on the ground, it didn't take a break to immediately leave - without even refueling, for their fuel tanks aren't even half-spent.

    You brief your team that about the events that have occurred and inform them of your current predicament - which is finding a way to enter the mission location without the personnel there noticing it. You weren't even finished talking, but you could see on their faces that they had already began concocting plans and crafting schemes to get over the current situation.

    However, before any of them could vocalize their ideas, Martin Stevens called everyone's attention to a slightly more pressing matter - the fact that you are in a foreign land, with no guarantee of securing a location that would pass of as base of operations, albeit temporary.

    With that in mind, you approached a few select members of your team, specifically ones who had a firm grasp on intelligence and logistics, and called for their aid to search for a location that is both secure and would suffice in supporting the mission. Before twenty minutes could pass, they all procured a location, although each one was different. Presented with a set of options that may very well decide how the next few days will go, and how your mission will continue, you decided.

    [] An abandoned construction site. Not isolated from the town, but wouldn't attract much attention as people have regarded it as a haunted location.

    [] An ordinary hotel. Inconspicuous, although staying in it will gradually drain your funds.

    [] The ruins of an old military outpost. Secure for certain, but most of the location's functionalities have been worn down by age.

    I mean, there's gotta be a reason why it's supposedly haunted, right? We'll find the reason, hire the ghost, and... I don't know, finish the mission after that, maybe?

    Even though its functions have been worn by age I'm guessing that most of them would still have some use. Maybe even they'll find some weapons and ammo or a secret way to get to Haugen enterprises. It's a military outpost, it's gotta have some sort of tactical advantage.
