It's an unpopular opinion but i like it when my villains don't have reasons for being evil, they just do it because they want to or because they think it is fun. I like my evil black to the core, without any petty excuses for why they act the way they do.
I honestly hate it when characters are 'misunderstood' or 'tragic'. If you are going to be evil just own up to it and stop acting like having a sad past or being good at heart is an acceptable excuse. Sorry but if you killed a bunch of people and then turned around saying that it was because you were beaten as a kid, I won't care one bit, you are a killer either way and don't deserve mercy.
So many people think that having deep rooted reasons add depth to the villain but I just think it makes the character seem weak in mind, body, and will. Very few villains that lean on the past like a crutch ever earn my affection.
