Those who serve in the Armed Forces do not live as civilians do. Soldiers often give up freedoms civilians take for granted. Freedoms like time, living safely, where you are stationed, not being physically close to your loved ones, having to miss births, birthdays, holidays, weddings, and so much more.
What a better word for this than "sacrifice?" =)
