    Harem RPs confuse me because that inherently implies there's a main character (the guy who the harem centers around) when that goes against the very core of role playing: there is no one main character.

    But who controls the NPC? And if the answer us "everyone" then how do you keep a consistent personality.

    Then again, keeping a character consistently bland as bread (which is an insult to bread as bread is delicious) can't be that hard.

    I wouldn’t say “nobody is the main character” is a core part of RP, as I wouldn’t say it’s a necessary component for roleplay or good roleplay even. You can absolutely make main character/side character dynamics work in RP, as these dynamics mainly involve what the plot tends to center around. Playing a main character though would come with the responsibility of not being passive and being actively engaged in other people’s stories, because while the overall story would mainly focus on the “main character”, on a more arc-by-arc, moment-by-moment basis the story would focus more on the rest of the cast. There are many potential approaches to this, mainly a story where the main character has to actively deal with something the other characters are going through (mysteries with the MC being a detective, dating sim style RPs where the character is expected to try to earn the romantic affections of other characters…) or stories in which the main character gets involved by nature or out of aligned interests rather than active pursuit of dealing with other’s problems (say, a main character that is a traveling bard and deals with situations they come across because they can’t help themselves from wanting to hear the stories, though admittedly this plot would be hard-pressed for an RP since it would be harder to make the “side characters” not disappear after their specific plot is done).

    that's understandable!! for me, wandavision started out really good but it lost me by the end. i liked the message behind tfatws, but it felt very hamfisted at times, along with weird pacing. loki had it's... weird moments, but it had me captivated from the start and it redeemed itself by the end. the only thing i probably didn't like was kang.

    They also hired literally the most famous person in the galaxy. 😆 Albeit everyone thought Shepard was dead at the time, but after enough trips to bars (not to mention the Citadel) everyone knew (s)he was back and working for Cerberus. Not very discreet there, either.

    Just when you think you've seen everything something new crawls out if the woodwork: Dream SMP RPs. Like, I know that the Dream SMP contains fictionalized versions of the YouTubers involved but these are still real people.

    People who are vehement that Batman should be super dark and gritty all the time and he should never be even a little funny and always be serious and fight serious villains with uber-deadly plots seem to forget they're talking about a man who dresses up like a bat on a regular basis.
