my sister and i were just discussing new meals to add into our dinner rotation when we came across this topic. i mentioned that while i'm open-minded to most foods, but that i will not eat veal, deer, beets, or any kind of seafood (the last one is due to allergies). i also have the cilantro is soup genes, so i generally avoid meals with that & i also won't eat tofu due to its texture (quiche is up there for the same reason, omelettes are also on thin ice). the exception for tofu (and celery, which i also dislike) is soups. aside from that, i'm cool with trying everything once.

what about you all? what is some food you can't/won't eat (or even try)?

Surstrรถmming, Not in a million years...

just looked that up and. . eeugh. yeah. right there with you.
Saw the video of Sweedish people eating it... Anomaly... you poor poor man...

I mean, for the super dramatic stuff, casu marzu. I like my eyeballs where they are, thanks. Similarly on an extreme end of plausibility, I would not eat meat from any cetacean, even if in a place (like the Faroes) where it's traditional and/or subsistence food.

In terms of things I'm more likely to encounter in my lifetime: horse is a no-go for me, as are whole insects. I'm open to insect flour as a sustainable way of increasing protein, but the idea of being able to see the shape of a cricket and biting into it triggers my gag reflex.

The most common things that I won't try are blue cheeses (or any cheese with visible mold discoloration) and mushrooms, because I've tried some varieties in the past and know that I dislike them for category-wide reasons. Blue cheese is a mental thing, which is why it's visible mold only - I know that all the sharp cheeses I do like also have ripening agents, but I don't want to see it. Mushrooms come down to texture (slimy, bad, no thank you).

I have tried octopus, but I wouldn't eat it now because I have a better understanding of how intelligent they are. Sadly, they are also delicious.

Eggs, rice, and ground meat are the unholy trinity of staple foods that I can't eat due to sensory problems and are making my life hell for it.

Surstrรถmming makes me sick just by reading description (sorry those who enjoy it!)

I would not eat food that is very spicy (I used to like it until my health went down and now I can't eat spicy things anymore).

Also things like dog meat... just no.

Sweedish Sailor loved it, its an aquired taste, definately...

Same Goes with Durian, i think the number 1 thing that makes people don't want to taste durian is the smell.

then reminder, if you ever go to indonesia, never asked for spice... they will call you weak, but its better than to having a stomachache.

I got some buddies from Jamaica that have been trying to get me to eat ox tails and I just can't do it.

Oh, so many things: octopus legs, cow tongue, fugu (blowfish. It can poison you), the crest of a rooster (forgot what that's called), and lots of other things that won't come to mind just now

Oh, wait. That coffee that has to eaten and crapped out by a bobcat or something! That!

hard/soft boiled eggs
and uh
brains of any animal
I can't believe those things are...
EDIBLE

Tarantulas and/or silkworms

My floor for "try" is pretty low. I'd give Surstrรถmming a shot even. And I've been on the world's most casual hunt for balut for years. Fried crickets I am told are delicious

Nothing of the insect variety. Adding to my list:
Haggis
Cow's foot
Turtle soup
Raw oysters

I cannot imagine ever eating bugs, but generally pretty receptive to trying new foods. I'm willing to try the less used animal parts like tongues but absolutely not the brains of anything, something something suggestion of texture.

Oh, and this is something I've tried before but I can't get behind fluffy eggs, like the ones you see for those egg sandwich shops. Texture nightmare and just not very tasty.

Asparagus and steak. Can't get behind the flavor of either.

Any of the luxury dishes in Salt Bae's restaurants.

Nah. Just buy me a cheeseburger man. I'm not supporting that kind of business.

Eggplant. I hate it so flipping much. And i usually love fish, but unless itโ€™s salmon i hate eating it fried and/or not fresh. I hate day old refrigerator fish itโ€™s the worst thing on the planet. I will eat literally anything and everything else in unholy quantities (Including insects, sorry guys..)

I have an aversion to white sauces for some reason. It's not the color itself, just that every white sauce I've tried in small amounts is super goopy or creamy in an unsettling way or smells like vinegar. Mayonnaise is the central example, if there's enough mayonnaise that I can tell it's there then it is not food. Mayo is just this substance that other people think is food for some reason ๐Ÿ˜†

Sauces that are other colors tend to be okay because the color usually comes from tomatoes or broth that make the texture better. Some of my friends say they don't like any sauces, but they've liked every sauce-including thing I made, so I feel better knowing my pickiness is part of some kind of pattern in how some peoples' brains work, at least.

I HATE CHEESE. At least, on its own. I'll happily eat things like pizza or Cheetos. I absolutely abhor cottage cheese, most of all. And call me weird, but when I was little, whenever I went grocery shopping with my mom and we went down the cheese aisle, I couldn't handle it without wanting to throw up. It's strange, even I'll admit that, but it's just the way I am, I guess.

Out of curiosity, does this include a basic bechamel as well? Just flour, butter, milk, and maybe a sprinkle of seasoning - that's what I think of when I hear 'white sauce'.

If it is, and you want to try a recipe which calls for a bechamel (or uses it as a base for cheese sauce), it might help to use lower/nonfat milk rather than what the recipe says. I can't eat restaurant white sauces because they almost always use heavy cream, which is WAY too rich for me because I grew up on homemade sauces using nonfat milk. It'll also impact the texture somewhat. I re-learn this lesson every time I'm at a restaurant and have a craving for alfredo.

(If you've already tried this, feel free to disregard! Just wanted to mention it since this type of sauce is so common in some cuisines.)

Coffee-flavored anything. I don't like the taste of coffee and I rarely like the smell of it. I've also tried pizza, many times, though I've never been able to get behind it. It hasn't stopped people from trying to convince me that I just haven't had "the right kind of pizza" yet, but no. I'm not going to try New York or New Jersey or whatever city/state/area kind of pizza because it all tastes the same to me and I just don't like it.

I also have some food sensory issues, so I'm not a terrible adventurous eater, but I try to be open-minded. I won't eat quiche due to its texture, I have no interest in trying bugs, and I don't ever think I can get myself to try horse jerky. I definitely don't want to be eating the hearts or feet of animals (even though many of my friends have tried these and stated that they're delicious). I also don't like most foods with raw onions in them.
